ONE of the major uses of barium in metallic form is as a getter material in vacuum tubes. Because of the high chemical reactivity of the metal, Ba-Al alloys are extensively used. Numerous methods for the preparation of Ba-Al alloys have been published, a few of which1-4 are cited here. Most of these methods were found to be quite elaborate, involving the reduction of BaO, and not too well adapted for the close control of the final composition of small amounts of alloys prepared for laboratory use. A simple laboratory method for the preparation of Ba-A1 alloys in small batches starting from pure metals was devised, so that it was possible to control the desired compositions to within 1 pct. The pertinent features of the alloy system Ba-Al5 are 1) an intermediate compound BaAl, with the melting point of 1050°C, and 2) a eutectic between aluminum and BaAl4 at 98 pct Al. The accompanying sketch shows the experimental arrangement for the preparation of the alloys. Weighed amounts of aluminum and barium were placed in an alumina and a stainless steel crucible, respectively. According to the supplier's specification, the purity of the metals used in the alloys is as follows: a) aluminum rods—99.9 pct Al, and b) barium rods—99.5 pct Ba. The stainless steel crucible, tapered at the bottom and having a 1/16 in. diam hole, rested on top of the alumina crucible. The assembly was placed inside a graphite sleeve which rested on a refractory platform. The platform moved the assembly up and down through the field of a radio frequency coil. A glass bell jar was placed between the crucible assembly and the radio frequency coil to maintain a steady flow of helium around the melt. A small window was cut out on the wall of the alumina crucible to observe the progress of the re- action and to record the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The platform was first raised high enough to move the barium out of the radio frequency coil field in order to allow only the aluminum to melt. The assembly was then lowered so that the barium began to melt and flow out through the small orifice into the molten aluminum. In order to keep the violence of the exothermic reaction under control, the rate of flow of barium was carefully regulated by raising or lowering the crucible assembly. All the samples prepared by this technique were examined by a Norelco X-ray diffractometer using CuKa radiation, The diffraction specimens were prepared by placing the finely powdered samples in flat specimen holders. The Ba-Al alloys prepared with a high barium content were found to consist mainly of BaAl4. The structure of BaAl4 has previously been reported by Alberti and Andress.8 They found that BaAl4 was body-centered-tetragonal with an a0 = b0 = 4.530Å and c0 = 11.14Å. An alloy whose composition was found by chemical analysis to be almost 100 pct BaA1, was used to determine the relative intensities. The d-spacings were obtained from the same alloy to which a small amount of tungsten had been added as a calibrating material. Accurate values for a, and c, were calculated according to the method proposed by Taylor and Floyd.' The calculated values are: a, = b, = 4.566Å and c0 = 11.250Å. The measured d-values for BaAl4 are shown in Table I along with relative peak intensities above background and hkl indices. Acknowledgment The authors are grateful to L. J. (communication to the Secretary*): The hold experiment of Mr. James Gayley in drying the blast used in the Isabella furnace has attracted the attention of the whole metallurgical world, and has given rise to a wide discussion of the reasons for its great success. Mr. Gayley and the capitalists who backed him in his work deserve congratulations on the success of the venture, not only because it succeeded, but because they have been rewarded far beyond the maximum that could be expected from theory or probability. To state the case in its simplest terms, all that could have been predicted was: (1) that the removal of the moisture from the blaet would result in the saving of the heat required for its decomposition, representing from 3 to 5 per cent. of the heat-value of the coke used; hence about that quantity of fuel might be saved; (2) that the furnace would be somewhat more independent of variations in the weather; (3) that the campaign would be a little hotter; and (4) that the speed of the blowing-eugines would be decreased, at least in amount proportionate to the reduction in temperature of the air led to them. I do not think anyone anticipated a much larger output per day. The results actually attained were: (1) the furnace made an increase of 24.86 per cent. in the output of pig-iron per day; (2) it consumed 19.6 per cent. less coke per ton of pig-iron made; (3) the blowing-engines were run 15.8 per cent. slower; and (4) the saving in power made up for the power required to run the refrigerating-plant. Experiments revealed that quartz could not be floated in conductivity water at any pH with a long-chained sulfonate as collector. Various cations, Fe+++, Al+++, Pb++, Mn++, Mg++, Ca++, are shown to function as activators when the pH is such that the cation hydrolyzes. As the solubility product of the various cation-sulfonates was exceeded at the concentrations involved, precipitated cation-hydroxy-sulfonates, e.g. Fe (RSO3)2OH must be functioning as the collector in these systems. A number of interesting and important phenomena were revealed during a study of the response of beryl to sulfonate flotation.' Perhaps the most important observation is the effect of various cations on flotation response. Experiments showed that in the vicinity of pH 3.0, about three ppm Fe+++ increased recovery of leached beryl from about 60 pct to 100 pct, whereas about four ppm Ca+ + reduced the recovery from 60 pct to 2 pct. With the exception of ferric iron, all of the other cations investigated reduced flotation recoveries drastically at this pH. As postulated in the paper Sulfonate Flotation of Beryl,' even with low concentrations of polyvalent cations and sulfonate (on the order of one ppm), cation-sulfonates are precipitated immediately in solution. That is, blueish-white clouds were noted to form after given additions of salts to known solutions of sulfonate. Furthermore, it was also shown that one-hundred-fold more ferric iron than necessary to form the precipitated cloud had to be added to effect complete flotation. In other words, some form of solid ferric sulfonate was found to function as the collector in these systems. The form of the compound was suggested to be Fe(RCO3)2OH and that bonding to the surface occurs through the hydrogen of the hy-droxyl. As the form of this compound was shown to be dependent on the extent of hydrolysis of ferric iron, it is to be expected that ferric iron will be unique in some pH region. Further, if the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance, then other cations should function similarly but at different values of pH, since they will hydrolyze at different concentrations of hydroxyl ion. To determine whether the premise of hydrolysis is correct, the study was extended to quartz systems in the presence of various cations at various values of pH. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHOD Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate was chosen as the collector for the experimental work. The reagent, sup plied as a courtesy sample by the Shell Chemical Co., has the following physical properties: Physical form Solid — Finely ground Sulfonate content, pct wt 95 to 97 Molecular Weight 450 to 470 Number of carbon atoms in hydrocarbon chain 25 to 30 Melting Point, OF 250 to 260 Solubility Soluble in water with gel formation at concentrations higher than 25 pct by weight sulfonate This particular reagent was chosen because of its high active sulfonate content, long-chain length, and solid form. With the exception of the frother and sulfonate, all other chemicals were of reagent grade quality. Conductivity water was used in the experimental work. This water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, had an average measured conductivity of one micromho. Experiments were conducted at room temperature in a small glass flotation cell with the following procedure: 1) A redetermined amount of water and salt solution (e.g. CaC12 . 2H2O) were combined and the pH adjusted to a given value. 2) A given amount of sulfonate was added so that final solution volume was 130 cc. 3) One drop of Dow 250 frother was added. 4) Five g of quartz were added and the system conditioned for five minutes. 5) The pH of the system was measured (termed flotation pH).

"HEREDITY"' in cast iron has been a subject of much discussion. Numerous experimenters have found that the properties of gray iron may vary greatly without corresponding variations in composition or thermal treatment. The main structural difference in such cases is in the size and distribution of the graphite flakes and the explanations given usually attribute this difference to some chemical element not shown by ordinary analysis or to some physical factor, such as inclusions in the melt. It cannot be said that any of these theories is completely satisfactory. Much remains to be learned about cast iron and for this reason a study of the material was undertaken as a part of the program of fundamental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. A review of the literature indicated that very little systematic work had been done on the mecha-nism of freezing in cast iron. The experiments described below are largely concerned with that problem.

THE recent installation of a combination dust catcher, gas washer and precipitator at Carrie blast furnaces of the Homestead Steel Works has given very satisfactory results. The following description of the gas-cleaning installation is based on actual operating experience. When Carrie blast furnace No. 3 was rebuilt the decision was made to fine-clean all the gas produced by the furnace, because the management wanted fine-cleaned gas for fuel in the stoves and boilers. In order to keep the installation cost as low as possible, the gas-cleaning system was streamlined. All by-pass lines and goggle valves for bypass lines were eliminated from the system. A radical departure from the use of 8-in. tubes in the Cottrell-type precipitators was made by using 12-in. diameter tubes in a single compartment, the single compartment being divided into two units by a single partition wall in the top header. THE FURNACE PROPER A few of the characteristic points and dimensions of the furnace proper are: [Hearth diameter 26 ft. o in. Bosh diameter 29 ft. 1 3/4 in. Stock-line diameter 20 ft. o in. Large-bell diameter 114 ft. 8 in. Small-bell diameter 6 ft. 6 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to bottom of large bell, closed 94 ft. 4 in. Height of furnace from center of iron notch to main platform 105 ft. o in.] The furnace top is equipped with a McKee revolving distributor, the operation of which is electrically interlocked with the skips, bell hoists, and coke-weighing and charging apparatus through a Freyn automatic charging control. The gas leaves the furnace first through four offtakes, 5 ft. g in. in diameter, then through uptakes that are approximately 85 ft. high, which feed into a single down-comer that is 9 ft. in diameter. DUST CATCHER The primary dust catcher installed (Fig. I) may be described as a single-cone type. The inlet pipe at the top of the dust catcher is g ft. in diameter; it is flared to a conical shape as it extends down inside the dust-catcher shell, which is 35 ft. in diameter, 37 ft. high on the straight side, and has a conical top and bottom. The profitability of miscible flooding in a hypothetical target oilfield is examined. The major costs, including Windfall Prof it Tax, are identified and their re1ative importance are discussed. The sensitivity of profit to important physical and economic variables is evaluated and discussed, including variance in oil recovery, oil price, injectant requirements, injectant cost, and capital requirements. Economic sensitivities to important development and operating decisions such as timing, Spacing, Slug size, and gas recycling are also analyzed. The Windfall Profit Tax (WPT) as it applies to gas miscible EOR projects is reviewed. The effect of WPT on each of the various project cases is analyzed and the effect of reduced WPT on remaining production from existing operations is evaluated. Tax implications are compared for integrated vs. "independent" controlled projects and the alternative of expensing vs. capitalizing tertiary injectants is also evaluated. The impact of the Net Income Limitation in reducing WPT. during early and late project life is determined and discussed.

The same limitations' that characterized 1931 existed in the old fields of Indiana and Illinois during 1932. Prices remained low. The average for the year for Illinois and southwestern Indiana was $1.032 as against $0.852 for 1931 and $1.616 for 1930. In September a curtailment of production of about 25 per cent became effective and was continued to the end of the year. There were no new discoveries and very little wildcatting was done. Considering the age of the wells, and the number still producing, there were few abandonments. The most outstanding thing about the old fields in these states is their long continued productivity. Illinois The fields along the southeast end of the LaSalle anticline had their peak of 33,686,000 bbl. in 1908. In 1932, with a 25 per cent restriction for 355 months, these fields produced 4,661,000 bb1.l There were 52 new completions (most of them in old territory) and of these 33 were dry, 8 were gas, and 11 were oil wells. The new oil wells had a total initial of 102 bbl., or an average of 9.3 bbl. per well. Nineteen of the new producers were in Crawford County. There were about 200 wells abandoned in the old southeast fields in 1932 as compared to 210 in 1931. The greatest number, 86, were in Lawrence County. To the end of 1932, the four major counties—Clark, Crawford, Lawrence and Wabash—had produced almost 394,000,000 bbl. from 92,160 acres. Better than one-half of this was produced in Lawrence County from 26,240 acres. The Dupo area of Sinclair County had no additions to production although four wells were drilled. On the Jacksonville structure in Morgan County, six gas wells with an average depth of 300 ft. were drilled to sands in the base of the Pennsylvanian. They produced an open-flow total initial of 2,000,000 cu. ft. This gas will be developed further to supply a local market.

The use of solid electrolytes for determining kinetic paraneters at elevated tevnperatures is pointed out. The reaction rate constant k1 of the phase-boundary reaction during oxidution of iron to wiistite by CO2-CO gas mixtures has been deternined between 850 nnd 975C, using ZrOz(+CaO) as an electrolyte. Values are between 1.4 x 10-a and 5.2 x 10 ole per sq ctn atm. The tzain difficulty is due to mixed potentials arising from side reactions at the electrolyte inteyface. In a number of papers the calcium-doped zirconia electrolyte has been used for the determination of thermodynamic data from measured differences in oxygen activities (or potentials) between two electrodes. The purpose of this note is to suggest the use of this solid electrolyte for kinetic measurements as well. The principle can be seen from Fig. 1. A thin and compact phase II (electron conductor) is fixed on a plate of gas-tight, polished ZrO2(+CaO) (I), which separates two compartments with different oxygen potential. p, is a constant reference pressure of oxygen (1 atm). 1750 to 1850: The scene shifts westward across the Alleghenys to the young town of Pittsburgh; charcoal gives way to mineral coal as furnaces grow larger and the blast is heated; above all, Pennsylvania iron is adding strength to the new Nation and building an empire in the West. TWO names are inseparably associated with the Pittsburgh iron industry-those of George Anschutz and John Hayden. The iron ore deposits of southeastern Pennsylvania were found and developed early in the 18th century, and several forges and furnaces were built and operated. It was only after the revolution that the iron men crossed the Susquehanna River, built furnaces in the neighborhood of ore deposits of Franklin County, then along the Juniata River and its valley. Juniata Iron found a ready market in the Pittsburgh area. However, difficulty in transporting it across the Allegheny Mountains induced iron mas¬ters to seek ore and plant locations in the Pittsburgh district. One of the first to reach this area was George Anschutz, who migrated to America in 1789 at the age of 36, reaching Pittsburgh in the fall of 1790. Anschutz immediately set out to organize an iron company in Pittsburgh, and was able to interest some residents in his project. After being informed of an iron ore deposit located only three miles out of town (on the site of the present 26th St. and the Allegheny River) he decided to build there his blast furnace and foundry plant. Total cost of the installation was $300. When the furnace was put in operation, Anschutz, now known as Red George, found that the ore deposit was only an insignificant one and would last no more than a few weeks. A new deposit was found on Roaring Run, in the southeastern corner of Armstrong County. Anschutz transported some of this ore to the mouth of Two Mile Run, where it was loaded on horse wagons and transported to the furnace. AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

DISCUSSION shiou-chuan sun (author's correction) - Too late for revision, the author realized that the data on stability of froth presented in this paper were not based on the same height of froth column. It is recommended herein that the stability of froth is better calculated by dividing the time elapsed until the froth disappeared by the volume (in cu cm per sq cm) or height of the froth column, and is expressed in sec per cm. The stability data in Tables I, II, and III of this paper were recalculated, in accordance with this recommendation, and the results are shown respectively in the accompanying Tables VII, VIII, and IX. Compared with Tables I, II, and III of the paper, the stability data of Tables VII, VIII, and IX are more reliable in disclosing the persistence of froth of various frothers having different frothabilities. For example, the conclusion given in the paper that the stability of froth is generally proportional to the volume of froth becomes invalid when the stability of froth is expressed in sec per cm, as shown in Tables VII, VIII, and IX. Table VII shows that both the stability and volume of froth increase with the addition of small amounts of n-hexyl alcohol, and that further additions of n-hexyl alcohol decrease the stability but increase the volume of froth. Table VIII indicates that the stability of different types of frothers is governed by their chemical composition and is difficult to predict from their frothability. Table IX shows that the stability of different frothers with similar nonpolar groups tends to increase with a decrease of the hydro- philic property of their polar groups, and consequently with the decrease of their solubilities. This is further substantiated by the fact that the stability of frothers, as listed in Table IX, is generally lowered by the solvent effect of absolute ethyl alcohol. Table IX shows also that the stability of froth tends to increase with the decrease of the volume of froth* provided the frothers used have similar nonpolar groups and dissimilar polar groups.

Table IX shows that the stability of different frothers with similar nonpolar groups tends to increase with a decrease of the hydro- philic property of their polar groups, and consequently with the decrease of their solubilities. This is further substantiated by the fact that the stability of frothers, as listed in Table IX, is generally lowered by the solvent effect of absolute ethyl alcohol. Table IX shows also that the stability of froth tends to increase with the decrease of the volume of froth* provided the frothers used have similar nonpolar groups and dissimilar polar groups.

WHEN talking about Europe it is well to endeavor to keep politics and economics apart but they have become so intermingled in recent years that the discussion of one topic inevitably leads to the other. Economic influences formerly prevailed over politics but today national and international economies are governed by political forces. Commerce in raw materials, food, and manufactured products is now so restricted by governmental controls that the capacity of the world to produce and to consume, to exchange goods and to pay for them, cannot be gauged by the past or predicted by a multitude of experts. In prewar days there were some yardsticks but today there are none. Thus it is hazardous to make forecasts, for in all fields of human effort the world has been cast upon an uncharted sea.

CARL HENRICH (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with much interest the discussions of my paper by Messrs. A. S. Dwight, E. P. Mathewson, Win. B. Boggs, Jos. W. Richards, and W. C. Smith. Mr. Dwight's acknowledgment that he always-in lead smelting¬obtained better results by figuring A1203 as an acid in his slags, I may take as a confirmation of my views, notwithstanding his later conversion by, the late T. S. Austin to the latter's empirical view and way of neglecting the consideration of A1203 altogether in the composition of slags-letting the slags "dissolve" in Al203. I have a strong suspicion that Mr. Austin, in a large custom smelting plant at El Paso, has been able to keep the alumina percentage of his slags sufficiently low, not to give him much trouble, although I have also a suspicion that his furnace foreman may have had a somewhat differing opinion of the practical working of the "dissolving" theory,, whenever its applicability was tested to its limits. That Austin should have conceived the notion that the Ca of CaF2 would enter into a slag as CaO, seems hardly in accord with the recognized ability of that late metallurgist. It is a well-recognized fact that even small amounts of CaF2 will reduce the viscosity of a slag; but I did not think anyone ever had an idea that CaF2, in some mysterious way, parted with its F and coupled itself with 0 to satisfy a craving for CaO on the part of 802-least of all in a lead furnace. The "dissolving" theory for CaF2 was doubtless appropriate, and an improvement on figuring the Ca of CaF2 as CaO to satisfy the demand of Si02 for RO bases. However, I cannot understand the rationality of extending this "dissolving" theory to A1203 and to ZnO. It would be interesting to have more specific data from Mr. Mathewson in regard to the actual composition-analyses-of the slags made, when he had these unusually high alumina slags in Colorado. We "old" smelters all know that within certain limits, usually found out by rather tough experience, we could safely "disregard" A1203. In fact, I believe, we never really analyzed for alumina, except in slag analyses, when we

For some years past, those interested in the development of the increasingly important mining industry of Canada, have urged the adoption by the Dominion Parliament of a federal mining-law, which would have the force and stability of statutory enactment. At present, placer-mining in the Yukon Territory, is governed by the Yukon Placer Mining Act. All other mining under federal jurisdiction is governed by 'Orders in Council and Ministerial Regulations. In the earlier stages of development, it is perhaps a matter of necessity that these important matters should be so dealt with; but it is now felt that the time has come when mining-rights in the extensive regions under federal control should be put on a permanent basis, -and that any changes required from time to time should be made only after full and open discussion in Parliament. A short sketch will suffice to indicate how vast and varied the interests affected really are. When the Dominion of Canada was constituted by the Imperial Statute known as the British North America Act of 1867 (which came into force by proclamation on July 1 of that year), it comprised only the present Provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick; but provision was made for the inclusion of Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, Rupert's Land, and the North West Territories. Subsequently Rupert's Land and the North West Territories were acquired, the 'Crown Colonies of British Columbia and * SECRETARY'S NOTE.-Mr. Clark, an eminent Canadian lawyer, and joint author of the treatise on "The Law of Mines in Canada," has been requested by the Do¬minion Government to prepare a Federal mining-law, and presents this paper, by invitation of the Council, in order to obtain, if possible, useful suggestions from members of the Institute.-R. I. INTRODUCTION. THE mineral gypsum, CaSO, + 2 H2O, has been used for many years as a sulphurizing and basic flux in several smelting¬operations. Thus, in smelting oxide nickel-ore in the blast furnace, it is commonly added to the charge to furnish the sulphur necessary for collecting the metal in a matte, and a base for slagging the siliceous gangue. In the concentration of lead-copper matte in the reverberatory furnace it has been used for years at Freiberg, Saxony1 for a similar purpose, and for producing at the same time a copper-matte with less than 0.15 per cent. Fe. The latest use gypsum has been put to is in the blast-roasting process of Carmichael-Bradford.2 The term "blast-roasting," given by A. S. Dwight3 to the Dwight-Lloyd method of roasting and agglomerating ,I is a happy generic term which covers the ground better than the " lime-roasting" of Ingalls' or the " pot-roasting " of Austin,6 in that it leaves the operation independent of the character of the flux and the form of apparatus, and retains the characteristic feature of this class of processes-namely, that of using forced draft. In the Carmichael-Bradford process the dehydrated material, mixed with galena-concentrate, acts as a diluent and a flux. The process differs in this from the Huntington-Heberlein7 and the Savelsberg8 processes, in both of which limestone is used.

The Choco placers, mined continuously since the earliest expeditions of the Spanish conquistadors, were exploited by the Indians prior to the conquest. Platinum is found in varying percentages with gold throughout the Choco placers and is found in minor percentages in some placers in other parts of Colombia. The Choco Department is on the west coast of Colombia between the western range of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean and extends from the San Juan River north beyond Panama to the Caribbean. The first reference in European literature to platinum was by Julius Caesar Scaliger in 1557. He did not assign any name to it but referred to it as an infusible metal found in the mines in the New World. The Spaniards had given it the name platina, which is the diminutive for plata, the Spanish word for silver. Don Antonio de Ulloa first recorded the name while on an official visit to the Choco from Spain in 1735.
