This section of the Handbook deals with general principles to be evaluated in the development of a mining operation. It addresses the major issues that must be examined to fully evaluate a mining venture. Of course, one of the main topics to be evaluated is mine planning, which is covered in more detail in other sections (13, 17) of the Handbook and should be referenced in mine development projects. The topics to be discussed in this introduction include equipment and supplies, infrastructure, utilities, and project management. In any of the aspects mentioned, the current existing conditions at or near the mine site must be evaluated. This will include assessment of current use of utilities, infrastructure, housing, equipment suppliers, etc., as well as anticipated growth, both in the supply aspect of these systems as well as projected usage on these systems. After full assessment of both these aspects, an evaluation must be made as to the requirements the project will place on these items. Assessment must be made as to any up-grades required to bring the project on line, what impact the project will have on existing or expanded systems, and anticipated future growth impacts on support systems not only of the project but of other surrounding industry and urban devel-opment

"The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)—a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems—has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. NIOSH researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify challenges of and potential solutions for transferability of IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40% of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system based on low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards, to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine, and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communications and tracking infrastructure. INTRODUCTION The nation’s approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communications with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there currently exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects or ""things"" embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator, and/or other connected devices [1, 2]. It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: internet and things. The first one pushes towards a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional internet can be viewed as an internet of computers —i.e., “things” connected to the internet are computers only. IoT “extends” the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in our daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected via the internet, and thus creates a bridge between the virtual word and the physical world."

This dependency has implications in the management of risk in the supply process which requires a special procurement organization and program commitment to be successful. ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l'échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L'attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. Das Interesse gilt dem Tunnelbau unter Quetsch- und Schwellbedingungen in Italien entlang der Apenninen. "INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. In some instances the towns were entirely under the control of officials of mining companies, being on company property whereas, in other instances, the towns wars incorporated not under company management. During the late 1940's and early 1950?s, the Westinghouse Combustion Turbine Division built and demonstrated a residual oil-burning locomotive on six eastern railroads. Plans were made to convert to burning pulverized coal, and a single combustor was operated at a full-pressure condition in the laboratory for about two years. During the mid-1960's to mid-1970's, there was considerable interest in coal-burning MHD and a combustor was developed which would also be applicable to combustion turbines. In the early 19801s, the BCR National Laboratory (BCRNL) became affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh, and a program was begun, supported by the Stare of Pennsylvania, to develop an all-purpose combustor for use with industrial and utility boilers and eventually with combustion turbines. In this paper, we review the work of almost 40 years, indicate our present position, and propose steps to be taken leading to efficient and environmentally acceptable power generation from coal, and specifically to coal-burning locomotives.

This paper forms the second of a series, in which it is proposed to communicate the results of an extensive research into the influence of alloying elements on the physical properties of lead, now being carried out in the Metallurgy School of the University of Melbourne.Some general comments on this research were made by the present writer as an introduction to the first contribution by R. S. Russell*: It was there pointed out that it was the intention to prepare lead as pure as possible, to determine its properties and then to make alloys with the various elements added singly, and in various combinations, in order to determine the effect of each. This line of action is still being pursued.It occurred to the writer, however, that this fundamental attack might, with advantage, be accompanied by a parallel investigation in which lead of commercial purity would form the basis material. This paper describes a method of conducting rapid lateral loading tests of deep foundations in which the load is applied to the foundation with a time duration of less than one second. For purposes of this paper the loading is applied using a pyrotechnic loading system commonly referred to as Statnamic. However, the method should apply to any lateral loading system which produces a force time history with a loading duration of 20 msec to 1 second. The test provides a measure of the dynamic and static response of the soil/foundation system and must be evaluated as a dynamic loading. Interpretation of the test includes a simple single degree of freedom (SDOF) model which can account for the inertial effects of foundation mass, system damping, and static foundation stiffness. The results of the test measurements are compared with four case histories in which comparative static load test data are available, including pile group foundations and large diameter drilled shaft foundations.

During reconnaissance investigations of more than 300 stream areas in Idaho to determine the potential value of ilmenite in black - sand placer deposits 46 deposits were explored by churn drilling , trenching , test pitting , or shafting . The component mineral content and total black - sand content were determined for more than 8,690 reconnaissance and exploration samples . Data compiled during the investigation indicate a good potential for large , low- grade deposits containing ilmenite , monazite , columbite , euxenite , uranothorite , and other radioactive black minerals and accessory black - sand minerals . The data also indicate most deposits will be economic only if several component minerals can be recovered as coproducts .

Keywords: Pd-Ni alloys, Pd-Fe alloys, Pd-Co alloys, Magnetostriction, Magnetic Properties The presence of congruent melting minima, the occurrence of ferromagnetic transition over a large composition range, and FCC type crystal structure make Pd-Ni, Pd-Co, and Pd-Fe based systems attractive candidates in our search for materials with no rare-earths, large low-field magnetostriction, and good mechanical properties. The presence of paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition over a broad range of composition also provides opportunity for fundamental studies. In this work, we have examined the magnetic and magnetostrictive behavior of Pd-Ni, Pd-Co, and Pd-Fe alloys over the entire composition range. Alloy sample rods were prepared by arc melting and casting. X-ray diffractometer was used to obtain lattice parameter data. Magnetostriction was measured along the rod axis using strain gages. Magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer.

Differences in the composition or chemical structure of the organic material in samples of Uinta Basin (Utah) oil shale were studied relative to stratigraphic position within the Green River Formation. This involved a systematic study of the soluble organic material and the insoluble organic material (kerogen) present in the samples. Emphasis was placed upon the distribution of the alkanes (normal and isoprenoid compounds) in the soluble extracts and upon the aromaticity of the kerogen. Significant differences exist in the chemical composition of the organic material from various strata within the Uinta Basin, some of which were related to burial depth but most were related to source material variations, environmental differences, or other factors. The Uinta Basin samples differed significantly from Piceance Creek Basin and Green River Basin samples in the large amount of soluble extract they contained.

In an open cast coal mining operation, a 305 m (1000 ft) long by 49 m (160 ft) thick overburden cast blast can produce more than a million cubic yards of broken muck that needs to be removed before the coal recovery process can start. In the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, it is common to see 30 to 40 percent of the overburden cast to a spoil that does not require rehandling with heavy equipment. Therefore, the higher the percent cast, the better the cast blast is rated. However, depending on the shape of the muck profile, there is often 20 to 30 percent of the muck standing in front of the high-wall. This portion of muck would require a number of dozers to push down to the dragline pad level. From the mine operator point of view, it is believed that for a given muck profile, there should be an efficient dozer pushing method such that a dragline pad can be developed in the shortest time. As a tool for analyzing this dynamic problem, a 2-D discrete element model, i-PushTM, has been developed to simulate a dozer pushing operation. This mechanistic model takes into account the dozer blade geometry, the dozer operating procedure (e.g. cut-depth, blade fill distance, forward and reverse speeds at specific slope angles), material density and cohesion. To demonstrate how i-PushTM can be used to help determine the most productive push routine, this paper presents three dozer push methods to compare the effectiveness of pushing at 3:1, 4:1 and 5:1 push angles.

Volume I contains summarizes of the studies performed under this contract. Volume II is an appendix which contains more detailed descriptions of these studies.

"Factors which affect the separation achieved in a hydrocyclone are discussed and illustrated with graphs of some mathematical relationships.Definitions of separation and sharpness include comment on use of elutriation devices.A plea is made for better evaluation of field data prior to their reporting or use in calculations. Methods of evaluation are suggested, with samples of the relevant calculations.An example of the effect of percent solids errors is given, with computer printout and plotted corrected recoveries.INTRODUCTIONThe range of interest in cyclones runs from a simple demand for classification results to a detailed study of published equations defining cyclone characteristics. Probably this group covers as broad a range and, in an attempt to offer something for everyone, I will begin with general operating comments, then move on to more analytical topics. Ideally, an author would compose his paper after the discussion period, when he would have a better idea of the areas of special interest to his audience.Sor'1e of you may share our incurable fascination with classification, especially as performed in cyclones. It is amazing that such a simple device could be in use for more than 20 years and retain as much mystery as it does. Substantial parts of the mystery have been solved but some remains, to keep up our curiosity. There is at least one valid reason: the unusual compactness of this device, which makes internal observation very difficult. What other unit can you think of which performs such a complex separation between particle sizes, shapes and specific gravities at such high capacity? Retention time in a cyclone is typically 3 seconds!Mutual Agreement - In a cyclone, every parameter of geometry and of operation interacts with every other. In an orderly discussion of individual parameters it would be necessary to repeat, in every section, 11 if all other factors are equal"". Could we agree now, for our mutual convenience, that that phrase is clearly understood between us during the remainder of this paper?"

This paper describes a situation that many drilling and blasting contractors have found themselves in – a client?s fear of the use of explosives. In the summer of 2007 Blasting Services Ltd was asked to undertake some drilling and blasting work in an abandoned quarry that was being restored for a housing development. Previous quarrying operations had left a series of overhangs that were considered unsafe and required removing. The site contractor considered that the best and safest way to carry out this work was by drilling and blasting. Blasting Services Ltd, with the technical assistance of Exchem Explosives, designed a drilling and blasting regime to accomplish this work with a series of trim blasts. The design took into account the close proximity of a structure in very poor condition and the imposed vibration limit of 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.). The faces were profiled, holes drilled and explosives ordered. A few days before the first blast was due to be carried out the client decided that the poor condition of the nearby structure meant that the use of explosives could not be permitted. This decision was made despite the blast design indicating that the vibration level would be well below the 6.0 mm/s (0.24 i.p.s.) limit.

The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

Many factors govern the size and shape of an open pit, and these must be properly understood and used in the short and long-term planning of any open pit and quarrying operation. The importance of each factor will depend on the particular project, but the geology, grade, and localization of mineralization, extent of the deposit, topography, property boundaries, production rates, bench height, pit slopes, road grades, mining costs, and cut-off grades are key elements of open pits. This paper discusses the work done on the above parameters in order to provide an optimal production plan for a limestone quarry and clay deposits that provide raw material for a cement factory in Turkey. Soke cement factory has 1 400 000 tons of clinker capacity and is located on the western part of Turkey, in the province of Aydin. It is one of the largest facilities in the cement sector in terms of capacity, and it has a large advantage over facilities because the location of the factory was chosen to obtain the raw materials necessary for cement production within very short distances. However, the old reserves that supplied limestone to the factory had been reported to have run out, and therefore new limestone reserves in the same province have been investigated over the years by experienced geologists. From surface samples, high MgO content was reported in the neighbourhood of limestone formations with high dolomatization; hence, other alternatives were taken into consideration. One alternative with better chemical composition had been found 24 km away from the factory, but the haulage cost of limestone was unacceptable for the factory due to high diesel prices in Turkey. The maximum allowable MgO content in the pre-mix feed to a rotating furnace is 2.5% MgO content in pre-mix from both limestone and clay deposits. The clay deposits belonging to the cement factory have higher MgO content than the limestone deposit, and therefore this quality problem was taken into consideration first, instead of transporting material from 24 km away. This study gives the details of work done to evaluate both the clay and limestone deposits, statistical analysis performed on core samples taken from drill holes, mathematical modelling for both sites, and most importantly of all, in-pit homogenization work that reduced the pre-mix MgO content. As a result of this study, the profitable limestone quantity has been improved in order to serve the cement factory over a projected 25 additional years without using any material from the close deposit.

The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s (SD) neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding SD. This paper describes the proposed controlled flooding of REL 4, the planned in-service monitoring of the five plugs and the water barrier between REL 4 and South Deep Mine, and the long-term maintenance of the plugs and rock mass in the immediate vicinity of the plugs.
