As this paper is written, the only method for the commercial production of lithium metal is by the fusion electrolysis of LiC1-KC1 mixtures, as first proposed by Gunkz.2 The details of the industrial process have not been made public hut Osborg8 stated that an efficiency of more than 90 pct is obtained with a lithium metal recovery above 95 pct and that the metal is 99.5 pct pure. Pletenev9 gave a power consumption of 66 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium metal produced with a salt consumption of 9 kg of LiCl and 0.4 kg of KCI. Pletenev's figures indicate a somewhat lower recovery than that given by Osborg. In a recent report on' German lithium plants, Motock7 gives figures that are also less favorable than those reported by Osborg. At the German plants the lithium recovery in electrolysis was only 83.4 pct, with a power consumption of 140 kw-hr per kilogram of lithium. The metal averaged only 97 pct pure, with sodium and potassium as the chief impurities. The presence of SO2, SO3, SiO2, Ba, Ca, and appreciable amounts of Na and Fe2O3 were especially disturbing in the electrolysis, and it was necessary to run the cell for some time to eliminate most of these impurities and condition the bath. It may be noted here that most of these impurities do not interfere with a thermal reduction process. These facts show that the present method of producing lithium is fairly efficient and would suggest that other methods could not compete. However, fusion electrolysis has certain drawbacks, such as the necessity of supplying costly, low-voltage direct current and of collecting and processing the anodic chlorine if it is not to be wasted. An even greater disadvantage is that lithium chloride must be used for an electrolyte. It is one of the most expensive salts of lithium, since it cannot be produced in anhydrous form by precipitation from aqueous solution, as is done with LiF or Li2CO3. The reduction of lithium by a vacuum process similar to the ferrosilicon method for the production of magnesium would have certain advantages. Small units such as Pidgeon retorts, would give flexibility of production to meet demand, and a small plant would require moderate capital outlay. There is a possibility of using idle Government-owned magnesium plants for such purposes. The raw materials needed for vacuum thermal reduction would not have to be extremely pure, Director, with respect to the iron and calcium Content. Major world ilmenite and rutile accumulations reveal similar regional geology and Proterozoic age deeper crustal source rocks. During crustal collision titanium crystallizes as ilmenite and rutile at buried sites of high pressure and temperature rock metamorphism. Hydrothermal activity can convert titanium minerals to rutile, but titanium migration and enrichment seem only local. Many melts crystallize rocks with iron-titanium oxides in solid solution, but titanium enrichment at economic scale takes place in basic intrusive melts often associated with anorthosites and charnokite. Sedimentary placer enrichments have formed since the Proterozoic with water-resistant ilmenite, and rutile segregating by gravity from quartz sands deposited from flowing water. Placers have residual, alluvial, strand and shallow marine variants. Time, organic acids, and sand permeability play lead roles in the leaching of iron from ilmenite during weathering and diagenesis.

"This paper discusses how elemental analysis of conveyed bulk flows in real time using PGNAA (Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis) technology has resulted in significant improvements in advancing plant control in mineral processing operations. PGNAA through belt, full stream, continuous, multi-elemental, real time analysis technology is explained. Capabilities and limitations in plant operating environments are discussed including comparison with other real time, on-line technologies through review of published information available for on-conveyor minerals applications. Case studies include an iron ore and copper-gold company, both of which consider the technology an essential component in advanced plant control necessary in new process flow sheet designs, rather than an optimisation tool.INTRODUCTION Process operators rely on supply of a reasonable ore quality and consistency from the mine. Unfortunately neither the mining nor process operators have much control over the ore quality once it has been put into the crusher. Grade control typically stops once the material is designated as ore and the process plant operator needs to process it irrespective of quality. Plant control is most effective when technologies measure process streams directly and preferably in real time. Measuring sampling streams that are not representative of the primary flow will result in incorrect plant control decisions. Sampling coarse conveyed flows is expensive and impractical at many operations, however, this does not mean those flows cannot be measured. Investigations to find techniques suitable for real time elemental analysis have focussed on the application of known laboratory techniques to process streams. For conveyed applications, development of neutron irradiation techniques were most promising and early studies indicated potential success for bauxite measurement (Beurton et al, 1995). Tran & Evans (2001) concluded there was no equivalent technology to PGNAA in terms of material penetration power and that the technology was eminently suitable for basic industries such as cement. Nelson and Riddle (2003) evaluated PGNAA for possible use in the phosphate industry by using a unit installed in a cement plant to test performance on phosphate samples and ultimately recommended its use for further characterisation of the mine’s various ore types to improve stockpile allocation and grade control"

Abstract - The essential aims of additional borehole drilling are to improve the reliability of grade and tonnage estimates in each reserve class and to increase ore tonnages. The "GET" function presented in this paper considers strategies for achieving both of these goals simultaneously, and therefore is advantageous for selecting sites for additional boreholes. The "GET" function is either a linear or a non-linear product of three variables G, E, and T: f(G,E,T,) = G??E??T??where the values of any or all of the exponents ?, ?, and ??may differ from unity at the discretion of the user. G and E are the average estimated block grade and the average estimation error for ore blocks in one vertical column, and T is the compounded ore thickness within the column. To illustrate its utility, the GET function has been used for determination of the most advantageous sites for additional drilling in the Shah-Kuh Pb-Zn deposit in west central Iran.

Simultaneous reduction and foaming of chromium-rich slag have been studied in a laboratory furnace equipped with X-ray image analysis. Reduction of the metal oxides by graphite generated CO, which caused the melt to foam. The slag composition continuously changed due to reactions and dissolution of lining. Gas generation rate, foam height, and gas bubble size were studied and correlated to slag composition. Viscosity increased significantly during the experiments due to a change in slag composition. Bubble sizes varied little during the progress of reactions but differed considerably for different slags. Bubble sizes were largest for V2O5 containing slag, which is contrary to the general understanding that the presence of strong surface active agents reduces the bubble size. The foaming index did not follow expected trends for bubble size and viscosity, suggesting that foaming index is not a suitable parameter for discussion of foams under dynamic conditions. Shaft sinking through an amphibolite-granite rock mass experienced rock bursts on the shaft walls and benches. However, rock burst phenomena was exhibited only in granite, which is e1asto-brittle with ability to store strain energy caused by orogenic and man made stresses. To improve ground conditions, blasting of destressing holes at shaft corners was carried out. By this technique rock burst during shaft sinking was minimized, but not eliminated.

An inter-disciplinary geotechnical study has been carried out in an Austrian magnesite mine. The paper describes the how geological data, in situ and laboratory tests as well as subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods have been used to identify critical areas in the mine. The growing availability of information and data analysis capabilities of recent years provides new opportunities for improving the performance of mining operations. By using real-time measurements and artificial intelligence, it is possible to respond faster to changing conditions, while accurate and timely information permits rapid evaluation of changes and fast business improvement decisions. This article presents a blueprint for alignment of systems, organizational design, and management practices to leverage these developments in performance-driven operations management in mining and mineral processing. The first component of the blueprint is a performance framework with a system of key performance indicators for production control that can be used across organizational levels. This system places improvement at the core of management activities, giving greater importance to improvement skills at lower organizational levels, so companies can leverage available information for improving operational control. Secondly, the blueprint defines an organizational structure that strengthens performance improvement with technological and change management capabilities. Finally, the blueprint proposes alignment of management practices, covering the optimization of short-interval controls, the application of an improvement project portfolio management system that determines the ownership of improvement projects, and the coordination of controls across the organization. This combination of systems, organizational design, and management alignment supports rapid decision-making at the right organizational level. Introduction of the presented blueprint for operations management enables mines to leverage the developments in information and analysis capabilities to improve the performance of operations.

This is the third of the series of reports on coal-mine royalties and leasing conditions in Illinois. The results of the study of District VI were published as Serial No. 2726, January, 1926, and those of District VIII as Serial No. 2745, April, 1926, of the Bureau of mines. The counties of Macoupin, Sangamon, and Montgomery, which are three of the principal coal-producing areas in the northern part of District VII, have been chosen for this report because these counties cover an entirely different part of the State than do the two districts already covered. Some leases in, Randolph and Washington counties are included as they are in the southern part of the district, and the data happened to be readily available.

"DEFINITION OF VISCOSITYViscosity has been defined as the resistance experienced by one portion of a liquid moving over another portion, such as one molecular plane moving over an adjacent plane. A measure of viscosity is the force required to keep one plane in motion at Unit velocity, the other plane being considered stationary. Figure 1 illustrates the general idea that the surface friction between two adjacent areas will be greater the larger the molecules. Therefore it may be assumed that viscosity will be increased by molecular association or agglomeration, and likewise dissociation rill decrease viscosity. According to Maxwell (1)6 the unit of viscosity, the poise, is the tangential force per square centimeter of area of either of two horizontal planes 1 centimeter apart, one of which is fixed while the other moves with unit velocity, the space between being filled with viscous liquid of unit viscosity.The need for a satisfactory apparatus and experimental procedure for the determination of viscosity of high-melting materials at temperatures corresponding to those in pig-iron and steel making has been recognized during the past few decades. The condition of the slag during the smelting and refining periods in the iron- and steel-making processes exerts an important influence on the metal product obtained, this slag condition really meaning the state of viscosity or, vice versa, fluidity, which the slag attains under certain conditions."

A rotating disc of precipitant zinc in a single stage flow reactor was used to study the effects of deposit mass on the reaction kinetics of copper cementing on to zinc from dilute aqueous solutions.The reaction rate is controlled by external mass transport and the mass transfer coefficient (relative to the original precipitant area) is dependent on the quantity of deposit present. For deposit masses up to about 0·3 mg/cm2 the mass transfer coefficient (first order rate constant) is that expected for the counter-diffusion of reactant and product cations through a laminar boundary layer to a smooth rotating disc. For depositmasses from 0·3 mg/cm2 to about 5 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient increases significantly with deposit mass. For deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 and at least up to 12 mg/cm2, the mass transfer coefficient has again a constant value which is some four to seven times the initial ("deposit free") value. The rate constant for the entire range of deposit masses studied (0 to 12 mg/cm2 ) can be expressed empirically as a cumulative normal distribution of the logarithm of the deposit mass.The enhancement in the mass transfer coefficient for deposit masses greater than 5 mg/cm2 relative to the initial mass transfer coefficient depends on the local operating conditions and increases with increasing disc rotational speed. This enhancement is, however, independent of the previous history of reaction rates.

More than 111,350 mining and construction industry professionals from throughout the world gathered in Las Vegas, NV, March 19-23 for ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 and IFPE 2002. The triennial event is the Western Hemisphere’s largest equipment show for the quarrying, aggregates, construction and ready-mixed concrete industries. Despite the difficulties in the world economy, ConExpo-Con/Agg 2002 attracted more than 2,450 exhibitors from throughout the world. This was an increase from the 1,882 exhibitors that were on hand for the 1999show. And this year’s show occupied more than 180,225m2 (1.94 million sq ft) of exhibit space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This was an increase from the160,900 m2 (1.73-million sq ft) occupied at the 1999event.

The present computerized mine planning systems use CAD-like and Data Base Management System (DBMS) environments for the handling of numerical, textural, and graphical data. These two environments are usually integrated, that the data provided by the DBMS are linked to any graphical element rendered by the CAD system. The subsidence monitoring, analysis and prediction process should be integrated with the mine design process. It should allow for the assessment of impacts of mining on surface, surface utilities, and structures. It should also provide for the measures to control mining, that will create only acceptable levels of negative impacts on the surface. The common data base, and graphical capabilities of the CAD interface, may be used with great advantage for both systems. The findings of the subsidence engineering modulus should be directly incorporated into the mine design system, and vice versa. In this paper the author suggests guidelines for the development of the comprehensive computer system, able not only to predict the vertical and horizontal components of the ground movement, but also assess the induced surface damages, and costs related to subsidence prevention and compensation.

Much interesting data on cemented carbides has been published over a period of years which, when classified and pieced together, gives a clear picture of this special branch of powder metallurgy. This is an attempt to present the essential information in an ordered account.THE HARD CARBIDES-THEIR PROPERTIES AND PREPARATIONThe so-called hard or refractory carbides are the carbides of a number of metals which are grouped together in the Periodic Classification. These metals are in groups IV, V and VI. They are titanium, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, niobium (columbium), molybdenum, hafnium, tantalum and tungsten. These carbides have attracted the attention of chemists because of their remarkable properties. They possess very high melting points, and are rather difficult to prepare in the pure state. Their outstanding propertyis their extreme hardness, which they share with certain other carbides, such as those of silicon and boron. In addition, these compounds possess distinctly metallic properties, such as lustre (in fused specimens) and high thermal conductivities.(l)t They are capable of forming alloys in two ways:1. With metals, particularly those of the iron group. 2. With each other (a case of solid solubility).The constitution of these substances is not that of ordinary salts, which obey the usual valency rules, but must be likened to that of certain intermetallic compounds. Actually they are "interstitial" compounds(2), that is, they are formed from the ordinary metallic lattice by the insertion of the relatively small carbon atoms in the interstices.. The energy required to fill the lattice completely is high, and this explains the difficulty often found in obtaining the exact stoicheiometric compound. Thus the carbides can have a range of composition, and can be considered as solutions of carbon in the respective metals.Physical Properties of the CarbidesThe hardness of these compounds is so great that it is difficult to compare the individual compounds on this basis. Becker(l) gives values on Moh's scale, which are not very accurate and are of no great value. Burden(3) has reproduced a diagram by Hatfield which indicates that the cemented carbides are between 1,400 and 2,000 on the Vickers diamond scale. However, the pure carbides are harder, tungsten carbide being about 2,200. Hoyt(4) describes a method of measuring hardness applicable to powdered specimenswhereby the powder is rubbed on a standard block of cemented tungsten carbide under standard conditions, and the rate of wear is determined. No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

Higher bed height up to 680 mm, including 30 mm hearth layer of sized return sinter and high suction below the grate bars up to 1400 mm WG have resulted in increasing the productivity to a level of 33 t/m2/day and reduced coke rate to a level of 46 kg/tonne sinter. The ferro-wastes like blue dust, flue dust, mill scale, collection from dust catcher and gas cleaning plant, etc have been successfully added in charge mix to produce quality sinters. In this paper, brief description of the work done at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) in last few years and two case studies are discussed including the successful development of pan sintering units.

Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

Geostatistical methods have become well established in the last two decades for the evaluation of ore reserves in base metal, industrial minerals, coal and gold deposits of the Witwatersrand type. However, there has been considerable debate about the applicability of geostatistical techniques when applied to vein-type gold deposits with hydro or epithermal mineralisation. The main problems stem from a lack of spatial continuity and the highly erratic sample values that characterise these deposits. This paper reviews some of the current geostatistical techniques that are applied to the evaluation of gold prospects.
