"Minnova Inc. has five operating divisions thoughout Canada. One of them is Lac Dufault which was established in 1964.Lac Dufault is located 15 km north of Rouyn-Noranda, in what is known as Noranda volcanic centre, in northwestern Quebec. For more than 25 years, Lac Dufault has produced copper, zinc, gold and silver from four different mines: Norbec, Millenbach, Corbet and now Ansil.Ansil, officially in production since July 1989, is one of the deepest mines presently in production in Quebec. "Considering the dominant role of fertilizers in global phosphate production, it is evident that with the ever increasing development in agriculture there will be a growing demand for phosphate beneficiation. With the rapid depletion of high quality reserves, investigations into more complex and lower grade ore bodies are required. The Minerals Processing Division at Mintek has been involved in process development and flowsheet design projects on phosphate resources since 2003. This paper will discuss the processes that Mintek has explored and employed to upgrade various phosphate ore bodies (>30% Phosphorous Pentoxide (P2O5)) in preparation for end user application. These are aimed at an improved understanding of ores in terms of their varying mineralogy and the development of appropriate process routes to meet product specification. OVERVIEW OF MINTEK Mintek is a state owned science council that undertakes R&D, consulting and sells products and services into the minerals beneficiation industry. Mintek has been in existence for 83 years with a current permanent staff complement of 750 of which 300 are professionals with a tertiary education. Being a non-profit organisation, the majority of funding comes from state grant and earmarked funding. All research is needs-driven exploring innovation through technology and process optimisation trends. Owing to a solid base of expertise, extensive laboratory and pilot facilities, and a historical database of knowledge, Mintek is well positioned and equipped to execute projects on a scoping, feasibility, prefeasibility and bankable level. USES OF PHOSPHATE Phosphate is the component in fertilizer essential for root and stem development in plants as well as rejuvenation of harshly depleted soil for which there is no agricultural substitute. Phosphate rock is essential for global food security with 87% used in the production of fertilizers. In agriculture as fertilizer, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients in addition to nitrogen and potassium. In former times, it was simply crushed and used as is, but the crude form is now only used in organic farming. Normally it is chemically treated to make Single superphosphate (SSP), Triple superphosphate (TSP), or Mono-ammonium phosphates (MAP) and Di-ammonium phosphates (DAP), which has a higher concentration of phosphate and is more soluble, thus more suitable for plant absorption."

First of all let me say what a genuine pleasure it is to be here. Acapulco certainly is a beautiful change. I'm going to spend sometime talking about change, because frankly I'm astounded at the rate of change in our world today. One good example of this, reminds me that the first time I spoke before the AIME two years ago, we were at the Ramada Inn in Beckley, West Virginia. Today we're at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Now that's what I call a change. Seriously though, I'm sure you've all heard it said that the most consistent thing about our society is its constant change. Five years ago, no one could have predicted the changes we experienced in the United States during the first half of the 1970's. In the past twenty-four months alone, we have seen two presidents, three vice-presidents and hundreds of administration and government personnel changes. We have stumbled from one social crisis to another, while suffering through rising inflation, major energy shortages and labor unrest that could plunge us into a full scale economic depression. In view of these constant and unpredictable changes around us, it's obvious that we must learn to deal with change and "roll with the punches" if we are to survive. A controversial book published recently, explores in detail the various aspects of change and its impact on man.

Illumination is essential for mine safety because miners depend most heavily on visual cues to detect hazards associated with slips/trips/falls and powered haulage. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting mine illumination research to improve miner safety by enhancing a miner?s ability to see mine hazards. Thus far, 16 papers have been published covering diverse topics such as cap lamps, machine-mounted lighting, glare, lighting maintenance, and light-emitting diode (LED) technology issues. NIOSH has also developed an LED cap lamp, LED area lighting, and a Visual Warning System (VWS). This paper provides an overview of the improvements from NIOSH-developed lighting that include: 94% faster trip hazard detection with the NIOSH LED cap lamp; 79% faster peripheral motion detection to detect pinning/striking hazards; no increase in glare; 71% faster machine movement hazard detection with the VWS. Current research is described concerning an LED cap lamp for metal/nonmetal miners, illumination for refuge alternative deployment and inspection, and whether lighting could be used to improve miner escape and rescue in smoke. Lastly, future possibilities of using lighting to improve miner safety are described.

"A flotation bank consists of a serial arrangement of cells. How to optimally operate a bank remains a challenge. This article reviews three strategies for optimizing bank performance: air profiling, mass-pull (froth velocity) profiling and Peak Air Recovery (PAR) profiling. These are all ways of manipulating the recovery profile down a bank, which may be the property being exploited. Mathematical analysis has shown that a flat cell-by-cell recovery profile maximizes the separation of two floatable minerals for a given target bank recovery when the relative floatability is constant down the bank. Available bank survey data is analyzed in respect to recovery profiling. Possible variations on recovery profile to minimize entrainment are discussed.INTRODUCTION Flotation is used to separate valuable minerals from each other and from gangue. To reach a target metallurgical performance, usually assessed in terms of concentrate grade and recovery, feed is passed through stages such as roughing, cleaning and scavenging. All these stages comprise serial arrangements of flotation cells known as banks, lines or rows. Although a bank is the simplest interconnection of cells in a circuit, i.e. the tails of one cell is the feed to the next cell down the bank, how to operate each flotation cell in a way that the whole bank performance is optimized remains a challenge. Significant efforts have been made towards understanding the effect of operating variables on the flotation performance of an isolated cell (Lynch et al., 1981; Finch and Dobby, 1990; Gorain et al., 1998). However in the case of banks the variables that can be manipulated increase with the number of cells in the bank and the problem of how to manipulate them to achieve optimum performance is difficult even disregarding variation in ore characteristics (Lynch et al., 1981, p. 16). In general, the more manipulated variables available the better for optimization purposes, however without clear guidance how to effectively use them it becomes an “embarrassment of riches”."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, circular furnace, PGM, platinum, Peirce-Smith converter, Zimbabwe The Zimplats Smelter, located on the northern part of the Great Dyke, at the Selous Metallurgical Complex, is the only PGM smelter in Zimbabwe. Zimplats? operations currently consist of the Ngezi Platinum Mine, which is a 1.5 Mt/a open-cast and 0.7 Mt/a underground mine, and a Concentrator and Smelter to which ore is transported 80 km by road. The final converter matte product is transported to Impala Refining Services in South Africa for refining and marketing. The Zimplats Smelter operations consist of a concentrate filtration plant, a Drytech flash dryer, a modified Elkem / Hatch 13.5 MVA circular furnace, two 10? x 15? Peirce-Smith converters, and a matte granulation plant. The Zimplats smelter uses a three-field electrostatic precipitator, supplied by ELB-Brandt, for removal of particulates in the gas streams from both the converter and furnace. Construction of the smelter commenced in 1995, under the BHP / Delta Gold of Australia joint venture. The furnace was lined mid-1996, and smelting operations commenced in 1997. Due to design challenges, the Elkem furnace was modified by Hatch in 1998, and the smelter had not reached full capacity when operations were suspended in 1999. Re-commissioning took place in January 2002.

"More than 70% of potash is produced worldwide by froth flotation. Flotation of potash was developed in the early 1930s. Amines are widely used for flotation of sylvite (KCl) from halite (NaCl) and insoluble materials such as clays. Amine collector is also absorbed by clays. Therefore, clays are usually separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to flotation. Alternatively, slimes can be floated ahead of potash flotation. Flotation recoveries of sylvite are commonly in the range of 85%, while losses can occur in slimes, flotation tailings and make-up of process brine. Ores containing free coarse-grained sylvite are generally screened, whereas both fine and coarse fractions are conditioned and floated separately. The unique features of potash flotation include solubility of sylvite in water, the size of particles floated and fast kinetics. Particles up to 2.3 mm can be floated and about 50% of flotation feed can be removed in the rougher stage in few minutes. The main challenges in potash flotation are the recovery of potash from slimes, flotation efficiency in the presence of carnallite and recovery of coarse potash grains. A review of potash flotation shows that there is still room for improvement in both coarse and fine potash flotation. The present paper reviews the most significant flotation parameters including reagent type and dosage, flotation circuits, flotation equipment size and new developments in potash flotation. The latter include new reagents, flotation technologies (Hydrofloat, Jameson and column cells) larger flotation cells and slimes flotation.INTRODUCTION Potash is the common industrial term for potassium in various chemical combinations and minerals soluble in water. About 90% of potash produced worldwide is used as agricultural fertilizers. Flotation is the main treatment process of sylvinite (KCl-NaCl) ores for recovery of sylvite (KCl). Potash concentrate should contain a minimum of 95% KCl and be relatively free from 0.2 mm KCl fines. The flotation process for beneficiation of potash ores was developed in United States and Russia concurrently in the early 1930s. In 1934, Potash Corporation of America applied flotation process in a commercial scale (Tippin R.B. and Huiatt J.L). In the initial application, halite (NaCl) was selectively floated by employing lead chloride as an activator and soap as collector. The sylvite concentrate was reported in the cell underflow."

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. Commercial interest in refractory gold is increasing rapidly. This trend is supported by the work patterns of Amdel, where, apartfrom routine process- ing of free-milling and refractory ores, the majority of testing now includes biological and pressure oxidation studies to enhance gold recoveries. Central Mineralogical Services have examined, among other ores, an apparently unique type of refractory coating. A summary is given of experience at Optimet Laboratories, Pty., Limited. Research into nitric acid pre-oxidation, underway at the South Australian Institute of Technology since 1987, has shown significant improvements in gold recoveries, and in some cases, large reductions in reagent consump- tions. Three final-year student research projects were undertaken in 1990, jointly between the University of Adelaide and the S.A. Institute of Tech- nology. These projects involved biological pre-oxidation, pressure leaching, and Scanning Electron Microscope examination of refractory ores, and the resultant pre-oxidation and cyanidation products.

A system based on seismic techniques has been developed to detect and locate men trapped underground following a mine disaster. Both theoretical and field studies have been used to generate models to predict the performance of the system. For a strong source, it is almost certain that the miner's signal will be detected if the geophone array can be positioned over a likely area of entrapment. After signal processing, it is highly likely that the location of the miner can be determined within an accuracy of 100 ft (30.5 m). The system is presently operational in a state of readiness in the event of a mine disaster.

Measures and research direction for decreasing Au & Ag losses in electrolysis have also been introduced. Based on Au & Ag behavior in copper electrorefining process and previous studies by others, new approach for increasing Au & Ag recovery in copper smelter has been discussed. And brief comparison has made between continued multiplication method and equilibrium method application in the case of calculation of Au & Ag recovery in copper smelter.IntroductionAs gold and silver are the major by-products from copper smelting process, efficient Au & Ag recovery has become one of the key approaches for copper producers to increase economic efficiency. With similar physicochemical properties, Cu, Au and Ag belong to the first subgroup of elements in the same periodic table. Au and Ag will be enriched into Cu phase firstly when both matte-slag phase and copper-matte phase appear in copper smelting process. However, great changes have taken place in Au & Ag proportions into individual phase due to changes of physicochemical conditions in each smelting process. Metallurgists at home and abroad have carried out a great deal of pilot plant tests and laboratory tests in order to increase Au & Ag the former Soviet Union with regard to Au & Ag losses in copper smelting process in the 1970s and 1980s, and he proposed solutions to increase Au & Ag recovery in copper metallurgical plants. As more than 20 years passed, Jingchun Lu's paper, Discussion on Increasing Au & Ag Recovery in Copper Smelting System, remains as a literature of the most comprehensive study. Based on Jingchun Lu's literature, the authors of this paper discussed new approaches to increase Au & Ag recovery in copper metallurgical plants with combination of many researches done by other researchers for over 20 years."

In 1985, U.S. Bureau of Mines and University of Kentucky researchers began a series of studies relating to self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) donning proficiency. During the next 5 years investigators examined a number of factors that have a bearing upon miners' ability to put on and use the apparatus in an emergency: the procedure being taught; availability and utilization of training models; opportunities to practice; hygiene; and on-the-job training. This report presents an overview of that research. It is concluded that companies should adopt a hands-on training protocol that allows them to integrate SCSR donning practice into other workplace routines such as fire drills.

The status of sampling practices in the gold mining industry in Africa was determined as an initial step in a process to standardize sampling practices in the mining industry. Twenty-one gold mines, twenty metallurgical plants, and thirteen laboratories were rated for the potential influence of the relevant sampling errors on each component of the particular sampling system. The findings of the study on the status of equipment, standards, procedures, and management principles were presented in a dissertation (Spangenberg, 20121) and are now used by AngloGold Ashanti?s mines in the quest for correct sampling practices. The information is also used to compile a guideline on leading practice procedures for sampling methods in gold mining. Most zinc concentrates contain some silver and varying amounts of such valuable trace elements as gold, indium, germanium and gallium. With increasing similarities in plant installations, the predominance of electrolyte process and the increasing environmental constraints on iron disposal, it is essential that zinc smelters optimize the recovery of any valuable elements in their feed stocks. The process options, to date, of smelting, flotation or leaching of silver-rich leach residues cannot be applied economically to all installations. It is therefore necessary that new innovative processes, to recover silver and other valuable metals from relatively low grade feeds, be developed. This paper attempts to place this strategy in the context of today's constraints and will also provide a simple evaluation tool for any process alternatives.

Since the reintroduction of soil mixing to the United States over 10 years ago, the work installed by soil mixing technology has grown dramatically. From an annual turnover of less than ten million dollars per year the volume of soil mixing put in place has grown to an estimated $40 million per year in the year 2000. The majority of work done to date has involved walls, either for excavation support, permanent retaining structures or hydraulic cut-off walls. The other major use for soil mixing has been for mass stabilization of soils whether for isolation of contaminants or for retaining structures. This paper will discuss the uses of and costs of typical soil mix structures. BACKGROUND Soil mixing is defined as the in-situ combining of reagents, typically cement, with native soils, the purpose being to modify or improve the ground. This history of soil mixing covers only the use of cement slurry, aggregated with soil in-situ by mechanical mixing methods only. Soil mixing by use of high-pressure hydraulic means, also known as Jet Grouting, will not be discussed. In addition this will not cover ex-situ (above ground) mixing, or mixing dry reagents with soil. Only mixing applications for building, civil and heavy construction applications will be discussed, with only passing reference made to uses of soil mixing for environmental remediation work.

The largest known platinum group metal (PGM) deposit in the world is the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe also being one of the biggest. It is therefore not surprising that the majority (just over 5 million troy ounces or 156 metric tons per annum) of the world's platinum is produced in Southern Africa. Primary smelting of ore concentrates is carried out in that region by five companies, namely Anglo Platinum, Impala Platinum, Lonmin Platinum, Northam Platinum, all of South Africa, and Makwiro Platinum in Zimbabwe. The only other primary smelter of platinum group metals is Stillwater Mining of Montana, USA, although very significant quantities of PGMs are produced as co-products by Norilsk Nickel of Russia. Smaller (but still significant) quantities of PGMs are produced by Falconbridge and Inco of Canada, also as co-products from nickel sulphide smelting. There are many similarities between PGM smelting and nickel sulphide smelting, and the range of technologies in use includes six-in-line rectangular electric furnaces, three-electrode circular AC furnaces, Peirce-Smith converters, and Anglo's ACP (based on Ausmelt technology). PGMs are also recovered from residue materials using DC arc furnace technology.

"Spodumene mineral is a source of lithium for lithium ion batteries. Thus, the production of a spodumene concentrate with an approximate grade of 6% Li2O is targeted. Traditionally, spodumene is concentrated by froth flotation using fatty acid as the collector. Amine collector can also be used to float mica ahead of spodumene as required or feldspar from the spodumene tailings. Slimes have a negative effect on spodumene flotation and they are commonly separated by scrubbing and de-sliming prior to spodumene flotation. The main losses in spodumene flotation typically occur in cyclone overflow, scrubbing slimes, spodumene flotation tailings and mica concentrate. In recent years, dense media separation (DMS) is the main concentrating process in Australian spodumene operations. In these operations, DMS is efficient at generating coarse grain concentrates and rejecting large portions of silicate gangue, thereby directly reducing the milling cost. The ore should be crushed to 3/8” or coarser while further crushing is possibly necessary on the middling particles to scalp further spodumene. The DMS feed should be classified to remove fines (typically -0.5 mm particles). The final middlings and undersize fractions could then be processed by flotation. The main requirement in DMS operations is to have good spodumene liberation at relatively large grain size. This paper reviews the most significant DMS and flotation parameters in spodumene beneficiation. The treatments of different minerals in the spodumene ore are also addressed.INTRODUCTION A number of laboratory/pilot plant programs have been recently conducted at the SGS Lakefield site, sponsored by different clients. The main objective has been to develop a process flowsheet to generate a spodumene concentrate containing 6.0% or higher Li2O (~75% spodumene) suitable for producing lithium carbonate by a hydrometallurgical process. Depending on spodumene liberation size, dense media separation (DMS) can be an attractive option to produce a final high grade concentrate and to reduce the mass to be treated in the flotation circuit. In such a case, crushing would typically be performed in stages, with DMS separation to recover a spodumene concentrate and reject gangue minerals following each stage. DMS middlings and -0.5 mm fines can be processed by flotation to further recover spodumene. In the flotation process, coarse stage grinding minimizes the grinding cost and formation of slimes. In the majority of cases, a grind size (K80) of approximately 200 microns is sufficient for flotation. After primary grinding, mica, if present in an appreciable amount, should be floated to minimize interference with spodumene flotation. Desliming after scrubbing and high density conditioning are the key process operations prior to spodumene flotation. Spodumene can then be floated from silicate gangue minerals with a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate at slightly alkaline pH. Subsequently, feldspars can then be floated from the spodumene tailings."

In 2009 China mined 2.695 billion metric tones (Gt) of raw coal. It is estimated that only 3-5% or roughly 135 million metric tones (Mt) of these were mined from 300 some surface operations. Except for a dozen or so large modern operations, most of China's surface coal operations are small by western standards, with annual production ranging from a few thousand tones to 300,000 metric tones (mt). Depending on the size of operations, equipment used range from small trucks and shovels to large bucket wheel excavators and draglines in sizable pits. This article provides a brief overview of China's surface mineable coal reserves, mining methods commonly used and increasing environmental concerns; introductions of several large surface operations are also provided.

"Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed.
