"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

INTRODUCTION Conceptual design of the first Exploratory Shaft (ES-I) for the Nuclear Waste Repository in Basalt (NWRB) began in July 1981; detailed design began in February 1982, and was largely completed by December (RKE/PB, 1983). The intent was to begin shaft construction by January 1983. The site had been prepared at that time, a construction manager selected and on board, the starter hole excavated and lined, and steel casings were under procurement. Government policy changed, however, and construction was halted before the drill rig started turning. Construction is now planned to begin in 1988. ES-I is a part of the site characterization program for the NWRB. The shaft will be used to develop production data and related information relative to drilling shafts at the site near Richland, WA, and to provide access to the repository horizon for site characterization and testing. The early program called for one shaft and some 330 m (1000 ft) of drifting. The program has since expanded to include a second shaft (ES-II) and more extensive drifting and testing. Currently, both shafts are planned to be 1.8 m (6 ft) in finished diameter, but studies are underway to determine if the second shaft should be larger. The drilling method was selected for shaft construction primarily because it offered a significantly shorter construction period than conventional shaft sinking using freezing and grouting. In this study, a process to separate manganese and iron from manganiferous iron ores by reductive acid leaching followed by magnetic separation was conceived and experimentally tested. In the leaching process, sulfuric acid was used as lixiviant and oxalic acid was used as reductant. The experimental results showed that the manganese and iron separation was optimum when the concentration of the sulfuric acid and oxalic acid were 0.75 M and 30 g/L, respectively, at a temperature of 80 °C, a solid/ liquid ratio of 67 g/L, stirring speed of 400 rpm, and leaching duration of 60 min. Under this condition, 90.49% and 6.78% of Mn and Fe were dissolved, respectively, from the ore sample with a size fraction of − 106 μm. It was determined that the leaching of manganese from the ores was a second-order reaction with an activation energy (Ea) of 53.38 kJ/mol. The leaching residues obtained under the optimum condition were subjected to high-intensity wet magnetic separation tests to recover the remaining iron content. This separation process produced a concentrate containing 56.20% Fe and 1.79% Mn with iron and manganese recoveries of 56.83% and 66.73%, respectively. A magnetic separation test from an unleached ore sample was also carried out as a benchmark. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a magnetic separation process was used to a residue obtained from reductive acid leaching of manganiferous iron ores to recover iron.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from prototypes to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become critical to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width. This will, therefore, generate potentially significant reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and its associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road.This article presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined partly from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this article, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images that are analyzed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration.Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. "The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel requires a 75-year service life of its cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. This twin-tube 3-lane (each tube) highway tunnel is about 55-ft wide and 30-ft high. Since unified tunnel service life prediction methodology does not exist in the US, challenges occurred during the design-build phase of this project. These challenges include the methodologies in determining the reinforced concrete’s degradation mode, the lining’s surface chloride concentration level, the reinforcing steel’s critical chloride threshold value for corrosion, how to verify the concrete’s diffusion coefficient, and the durability impact from concrete crack width. This paper presents a methodology in verifying the proposed concrete mix can achieve the service life requirements. This methodology can be adopted for service life prediction for future tunnels to be built in the US. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (ORBEE) Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining system includes: •,Nominal 16” cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining, with 2” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel for its extrados and intrados, respectively. •,20” cast-in-place reinforced concrete invert slab, with 4” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel on its top face and bottom face, respectively. •,PVC waterproofing system around tunnel perimeter, excluding invert slab. •,Perforated PVC groundwater collection pipes on both sides of the tubes and one below the invert slab of each tube."

S. Budirsky J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point 0 travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex'85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73-83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4500 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (1a in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the aforementioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf-Forschungshefte, 1984, No. 5, pp. 219-223. Large scale surface coal mining will be required to fill future energy demand in the United States. In realization of this long-term commitment to coal resources, the U.S. Energy Re-search and Development Administration sponsored a study to determine the costs and problems of large-scale surface coal mining. As a result of this study a series of computer models were developed that can be used by government and industry to: 1) facilitate mine design and equipment selection, 2) provide detailed analyses of mining and processing costs. Two types of models were developed: detailed simulation models, which provide detailed information on mining systems and equipment to assist in mine design and equipment selection1 and broad models, which provide a first-order evaluation of deposits and new ventures for an entire mining complex. The complete model series permits examination of surface coal mining under a variety of terrain conditions. Six different mining methods were analyzed and documented during the overall project: 1) Area stripping with draglines, 2) Area stripping with draglines, extended bench, 3) Contour stripping with draglines, 4) Area stripping with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 5) Mountain top removal with shovels (loaders) and trucks, 6) Multiple dipping seam mining with shovels (loaders) and trucks. Each major operation in the coal mining pro-cess is represented in these models so that the best methods and equipment may be selected and 50 that the impact of such selection will be reflected in estimates of capital investment, operating costs, and coal price. Individual models allow the user to separately analyze overburden removal, overburden drilling and blasting, coal drilling and blasting, coal loading and hauling, coal preparation and handling, land reclamation, and premining, facilities, and administrative expenses. Because it is impossible to cover all the models in this paper, only the detailed simulation models representative of the technique "area stripping with draglines," are described. The Fort Union Strippable Coal Resource Region, one of eight test cases, is used as an example to describe the models.

Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.

For public organizations, preparing accurate project cost estimates is a critical component in capital project planning. Project delivery methods provide a structured approach to moving projects through the design and construction lifecycle, and typically use cost estimates as key inputs at each stage to determine if the project will advance. As design stages can occur years or even decades before construction contracts are awarded, estimates need to make reasonable assumptions about how the work may be executed (means and methods) as well as potential future market trends so that appropriate values for material pricing, labour costs, escalation, and owner’s costs can be included. This process is challenging enough during stable markets, as historic trends can often be misleading and require a suitable understanding of economic factors to use appropriately. When you mix in the market volatility that has been observed since 2020, developing accurate project cost estimates becomes even more challenging. In cases such as this, having a structured approach to cost estimating that includes an adequate risk-based reserves cannot be overstated as it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. This paper explores some of the historic and more recent market trends that have impacted key aspects of project cost estimates for capital project planning. It also provides recommendations on how to develop cost estimates for infrastructure projects, with examples from Metro Vancouver, which plans for and delivers regional-scale services to 2.6 million residents. A brief commentary on the use of escalation clauses in contracts is also presented.

A cost analysis for two alternative contour mining methods is performed to compare their results. The methods evaluated are: 1) Front-End Loader/Truck Haulback and 2) Scraper Haulback. Before performing these analyses, output requirements and equipment needs are found based on integrating geometric limitations with material properties. The final geometric design establishes limits on clearances, congestion problems and grades (with associated running surface materials). All calculations are kept practical, with assumptions clearly stated. The cost analysis is a unique, easily utilized compilation of several different approaches incorporating cost engineering principles. The strengths of each are welded into a cohesive entity once again aimed at practical application. The results are presented in tabular form.

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a machine-mounted scrubber and water sprays on face methane levels. Testing was conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery which was designed to simulate a full-scale mine entry. In the test entry, a model mining machine, equipped with water sprays and a simulated dust scrubber, was located at the face of a 20-ft box cut. Blowing ventilation was provided using a curtain with a 40-ft setback distance. Methane released from a pipe manifold located inby the mining machine was monitored at six locations that were 1 ft outby the pipe manifold. Tests were first conducted to evaluate the effects of using sprays and scrubber separately on face methane levels. Additional tests were conducted to determine how a scrubber used with various water spray systems would affect face methane levels. The use of either sprays or scrubber reduced face methane levels significantly. The combined use of sprays with the scrubber further reduced face methane levels a small amount. Primarily the sprays affected methane levels by changing airflow distribution close to the face.

Back injuries arising from such activities as lifting and handling objects have been and continue to be constant and undiminishing hazards of the occupational environment. Back pain in one form or another is experienced by almost a1 1 individuals. During the past 30 years, a great deal of accident prevention education has been directed toward the reduction of back injuries. However, it has not produced any great change in the incidence of the injury. The human spine remains the most vulnerable area of the muscul o-skeleta1 system. Back injuries account for about 400,000, or 18 percent, of all disabling work related injuries each year according to the National Safety Council estimates. These serious back injuries are estimated to have cost more than 1.9 billion dollars in 1976 in medical and lost time pay. 1

A dedicated tunnel construction version of the Caterpillar 328D LCR compact radius excavator is proving highly productive on the A9 Autoroute construction project near Visp, in Switzerland. It is the first machine of its kind to operate on a Swiss contract and uses a special dedicated front attachment designed and constructed by German Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin. The machine offers a powerful, stable and compact solution for tunneling contractors. A rear overhang of just 305 mm (12 in.) provides a tail swing radius of just 1.9 m (6.2 ft). The 328D LCR is ideal for the restricted working areas within a tunnel construction site. The machine is equipped with the wide tracks from the 330D L conventional crawler excavator, ensuring maximum stability when operating. In addition, the boom mounting has been moved further toward the center of the machine for the tunnel model, creating an increased lift capacity over the front end compared with a standard 325D L. The boom itself features a robust box section construction, with high-strength steels, additional supporting struts and reinforced bearings for maximum durability. All pins have hard-chromium plating for optimum protection against wear. Stick digging force is a powerful 134 kN, with up to 212 kN of bucket digging force available, for maximum penetration in blasted material. The 328D LCR is also equipped with a heavy-duty dozer blade as standard. This ensures outstanding stability when working and providing a useful secondary tool for clearing and leveling within the jobsite. Two 45° tilting mechanisms in the boom construction, allow the boom to be swung to 45° on either side of the machine. So the specially designed attachment linkage provides increased rollback for access to the roof of the tunnel. A Caterpillar CW45S mechanical quick-coupler allows rapid changes between specialist tunneling attachments, standard Caterpillar buckets and a range of Caterpillar work tools. The machine is powered by a Caterpillar C7 diesel engine. This six-cylinder EU Stage IIIA diesel motor [ ] offers 8 percent more power than its predecessor, with 140 kW (190 hp) available at just 1,800 rpm. Caterpillar?s ACERT combustion technology results in lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emissions. However, the tunnel machine is also equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard, to further cut exhaust gases within the tunnel working. The 328D LCR is designed for use in transport tunnels of 6.8 m (22.3 ft) in height. With the tunneling boom in place, the machine has an operating weight of 42,540 kg (93,783 lbs), yet retains a transport height with the tunnel boom of just 3.9 m (12.8 ft). Transport width with 600 mm (23.6 in.) track shoes, is just 3.2 m (10.5 ft). On the A9 tunnel contract, the machine is being used by a consortium of Swiss and Austrian companies working for the canton of Valais? Routes Nationals Construction (RNC) department. The 31.8-km (19.7-mile) A9 Autoroute construction project will connect Sierre in the west and the town of Brig to the east. The tunnel that is bypassing the town of Visp is just one of a number along the mountainous route.

Energy West Mining Company (EWMC) has implemented a geologic program for improving stability and support requirements along deep two-entry longwall gateroads at its Deer Creek Mine operations located near Huntington, Utah. Together with geotechnical monitoring and concurrent review of mine seismicity in cooperation with MTI staff, it has become possible to improve longwall layout designs for two seam extraction of the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon seams. The geologic program consists of surface and in-mine exploration drilling, surface and in-mine geologic mapping, rock mechanics testing and detailed measurements of changes in depositional and structural conditions during development of every longwall gateroad. The geotechnical program consists of underground measurements at seven locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon coal seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on seismicity and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program for verifying the insitu coal strength and load transfer mechanisms for improving two-seam designs and support systems. Geologic mapping results are also used to predict local stability of headgate and tailgate entries, combining mine roof mapping, stratigraphic profiles of the coal and roof, and depth-of-cover information and dual-seam mine overlays, for use by operations personnel in planning roof and rib support for the retreating longwall sections.

Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

Introduction Elevated zinc concentrations are observed in groundwater within alluvium adjacent to Silver Creek east of Park City, Utah. The study area is located in a small valley one and one-half miles northeast of Park City, Utah in Summit County, Utah (Figure 1). Although surface water concentrations in Silver Creek are typically less than 1 mg/l, groundwater concentrations have been measured as high as 85 mg/l in a near neutral pH environment. The elevated zinc concentrations in groundwater result from several factors including: (1) dissolution of zinc from tailings exposed at the surface and within the alluvium, (2) oxidizing conditions created by surface/ground-water exchange, and (3) ideal geochemical conditions for the dissolution of zinc-containing minerals. These ideal conditions include readily soluble minerals, available anions for complexation, and lack of available surface adsorption sites.
