"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

Problems of mine backfilling and fill material deposited underground, the characteristics and relationship between the deposited fill material and overlying ground, and the practical applications and limitations of hydraulic backfilling as ground support are discussed. A great variety of materials ranging from coal washery refuse to concentrator tailings is used as hydraulic fill. Some materials will solidify and cement; others will resemble quicksand, Hydraulic fill as ground support is more efficient in inclined mine openings than in horizontal mine openings, where it cannot be placed tightly to the back. This and other deficiencies of hydraulic backfilling led to the development of pneumatic stowing. Research work in hydraulic backfilling at the Pennsylvania State University is also discussed. This research work includes the investigation of segregation in the discharged fill slurry, the quantity of solids escaping in the drain liquid, the relationship of escaping solids to slurry concentration and discharge rate, and the compressibility of fine fill material.

Utilization of x-ray diffraction data for mineral identification has been well documented and accepted as an analytical tool in industrial and research organizations. However, the search for new methods to minimize errors affecting measured reflection intensities is being carried out by all concerned. Recent application of computer capability has greatly reduced the time required in handling data for mineral analysis and has increased the capability of accepting more data for greater precision. The purpose of this communication is (1) to describe the concept of cross-power in XRD analysis, and (2) to show that direct comparison analysis for multiphase systems has improved analytical accuracy when all available x-ray diffraction data are used in conjunction with high speed data processing by computer.

Extracting lunar ice, to be processed into pure water or hydrolyzed into oxygen and hydrogen, faces many challenges. On the Moon icy-regolith deposits that contain up to 10% water are found within Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSR) at both lunar poles, where temperatures approach -220 ⁰C. NASA has identified several technology gaps that exist in developing these resources including: • Excavating large quantities of icy-regolith • Delivering large quantities of acquired resources • Hardware that is lightweight and energy efficient • Hardware that is reliable and durable. NASA uses public challenges to incentivize innovative approaches to closing these gaps. The Break the Ice Lunar Challenge provides over three million dollars in prize money to teams that compete in developing solution to mining the Moon. This paper describes the rules for this challenge and presents some of the proposed solution.

The application of remote sensing for environmental measurements is already being utilized. Aircraft mounted imaging spectroscopy has been utilized to evaluate areas of historical mining operations as well as active mine sites. To the extent that remote sensing can provide more sensitive, cost effective, and timely monitoring potential, the technology is of interest to the industry. Questions remain about the application and validation of the data and the availability of the technology in the private sector. This presentation will discuss some of the potential uses, benefits, and concerns related to remote sensing and efforts to monitor the technology's development.

"Challenges have emerged as subway systems age and as new tunnels are bored in congested corridors or in high-risk environments. To help public transportation agencies address tunneling challenges, the American Public Transportation Association has convened numerous independent industry peer reviews composed of top experts in their fields to come together and provide recommendations and solutions. This paper provides case histories of peer reviews that include topics such as boring through toxic soils, boring underneath existing tunnels, retrofit of tunnel ventilation systems, and mitigation of water intrusion. Peer reviews are applicable to all tunnel projects worldwide. The paper will highlight the conditions of these challenges, peer review recommendations, steps taken to reach agreement, and the successes that resulted, which led to major changes, new legislation and reduction of risk. INTRODUCTION Public transit agencies face many challenges in maintaining and expanding safe transit operations, especially as systems age, ridership expands, and budgets remain flat. The development of new industry standards and federal safety regulations places further demands on transit systems, with compliance often taxing in-house resources. Studies of the state-of-good-repair across US public transit systems indicate a current backlog of $84 billion in maintenance projects, which will require an investment of $18.2 billion per year to eliminate the backlog by 2030[1]. Systems not in a state-of-good-repair may not operate efficiently, may not be available to meet the growing ridership demands, and may not meet required safety goals or reduction of risk. Innovation is another clear need transit agencies have for improving system performance and lowering operating costs.To meet these challenges, transit agencies often turn to industry peer reviews for guidance and recommendations as part of their overall strategy to maintain and grow the safe operation of their systems. As a service to its members, the American Public Transportation System (APTA) has developed an industry peer review program designed to give agencies opportunities to learn from each other and help them address challenges in operations, engineering design, and construction of their systems. Over the past 20 years, APTA has performed hundreds of peer reviews covering all aspects of transit system operations from fare collection to agency organization, project delivery methods to safety culture, and engineering design including tunneling and tunnel fire ventilation. As rail transit systems expand to meet increased ridership, it is often necessary to bore new tunnels for alignments in congested areas where surface rights-of-way are lacking. Such proposed alignments can pose significant challenges for transit agencies, as they contend with various tunneling problems."

Spirals, the most common equipment for the separation of heavy minerals such as chromite, are greatly affected by size distribution and the liberation degree (hence the specific gravity and size) of the feed particles. In this study, the efficiency of spirals in separation of low-grade chromite particles has been investigated by studying the distribution of grade, size distribution and liberation degree of feed, concentrate, and tailings of spiral. For this purpose, mass balance constraints were applied to the spiral-containing chromite processing circuit. Afterwards, the grade variations and size distributions have been investigated. According to the results, when the feed to the spiral has a larger size distribution, the enrichment ratio of the feed is 1.32 and, with the smaller feed size, this value has increased to 1.99. When the spiral feed has a larger size distribution and higher specific gravity, the recovery of chromite increases with increasing particle size up to 250 microns, and then with increasing particle size, recovery decreases with a relatively steep slope. Evaluation of spiral efficiency with respect to particle liberation degree has also shown that despite the high degree of liberation of spiral feed in size fractions smaller than 75 microns (88.9%), the liberation degree of spiral concentrate and tail in this faction is equal to and less than that of feed, which can indicate poor spiral performance in these size fractions.

The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. However, successful application of these diagrams requires several things be kept in mind to prevent what others have termed ?gross errors? in their calculation and use. The aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the thermodynamic equilibrium software, STABCAL. This includes a breakdown of the Gibbs? Phase Rule and how it is employed in STABCAL to modify the diagrams. This methodology was then applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system and resulting diagrams are compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The resulting mass-balanced diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is noted to compare well with spectroelectrochemical measurements using Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry.

This paper deals with the application of linear programming to the solution of mine ventilation network problems which involve only the controlled splitting of air. An airway whose air quantity is to be controlled to a prescribed value is called a "fixed-quantity" airway. In a network where the fixed-quantity airways are increased in number and are distributed such that the air quantities for the remaining airways are uniquely determined by Kirchhoff's first law, the problem reduces to determining the head losses and locations for air regulators and fans. This is one of the network problems encountered most often in underground coal mines. By formulating Kirchhoff's second law as a set of linear constraints and the total air horsepower supplied by fans as a linear objective function which is to be minimized, the problem is analyzed through the technique of linear programming. Some important properties of the problem are discussed and examples are presented.

"INTRODUCTION The design, development, fabrication, and test of cryogenic breathing apparatus is part of a much larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. This effort is designed to create cryogenically based life support equipment that is responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2006. Our goal was to design and build a liquid air based self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that lasted 2 hours and would be used for the egress of miners during a mining accident and be refillable while worn. Therefore, the current report describes tests of an Advanced Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (termed the ACryoBA) designed to provide miners egressing an emergency situation with a two-hour open-circuit SCBA. The ACryoBA utilizes low pressure cryogenic liquid air instead of high pressure compressed air commonly used in most commercially available SCBA. The ACryoBA can also be self-filled from strategically placed Cryogenic Air Supply and Fill Stations (CryoASFS) initially, and thereafter on the egress route approximately every 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 30 minute air reserve. The ACryoBA evolved originally from a one hour Liquid Air Pack (LAP) developed in the 1980’s for Space Shuttle Rescue forces allowing for longer duration and cool air (Figure 1). It was used successfully for many years, through the end of the Space Shuttle Program. The first attempt at a mine egress pack was the Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (Figure 2). It was to have a low profile, two hours of breathing, attitude independence, and a simple rapid refill while in use. The CryoBA met the two hour criteria, but with difficulty due to excessive heat leakage caused by the dual 4 liter Dewar design. Much of the stored air was lost as it vaporized faster than it could be used. However, the pack was successful in demonstrating both attitude independence and a simple rapid refill capability. The ACryoBA project was designed to continue the progression and address the deficiencies in the CryoBA. The ACryoBA pack was designed to last 2 hours. It minimizes the heat leakage with a single Dewar and thereby requires less liquid air. The single Dewar design also minimizes weight, making it much more manageable by the user (Figure 3). The ACryoBA complies with 42 CFR part 84 NIOSH certification test requirements. One critical requirement for the ACryoBA is operation in positions other than vertical for periods up to 1/4 (i.e. 30 minutes) of the rated service life of 2 hours; this was accomplished by use of new technology called the “attitude independent pickup” which is abbreviated “AIP.” The AIP, developed by BCS Life Support LLC (patent #8,899,226), has a tube going from the top flange down through the center of the Dewar. At the end it has a flexible bellows and a weighted end. Due to the flexible nature of the bellows, the pickup at the end is free to rotate and follow the liquid level around within +/- 90o of vertical."

Water is a most remarkable substance, essential for life of all kinds. As well as needing water to survive, man has always used it for agriculture, transportation, recreation, and many other things. When our country was young and inhabited by few people, the streams, rivers, and lakes were able to provide all the clean water needed by man and take away all the wastes created. However, with our growing population and an ever-increasing demand for goods and services, the public, industry, and government at all levels have become acutely aware of the need to manage the nation's water resources more efficiently. Abundant energy from many sources has helped this nation to become the greatest industrial nation in the world. Coal has contributed a major portion of this energy, generating electricity, running railroads, and maintaining national security during wartime. The result has been the highest standard of living in the world and a time of widespread economic prosperity. The use of water in coal mining is somewhat different from its use in most industries. With the exception of water used in cleaning plants, for underground dust control, and for fire protection, most of the water en- countered in coal mining operations serves no useful purpose. In other words, it is an undesirable element and must be removed, otherwise it will interfere with operations, cause potential water quality problems, and may even stop operations by flooding. In the past, removing water from working areas of most mines was usually a fairly simple matter. Pumps with piping were installed at sumps or low spots in the mine and the water was pumped to the surface or to drainage control facilities constructed for the operation. Ditches were often used to collect and drain the water by gravity to the outside or to main sumps for pump discharge. In either case, the water was allowed to flow into the nearest stream or river. The concept of "water is water' was generally accepted without too much concern for what was in the water since low-cost products and services, rather than clean water, were the public demand.

INTRODUCTION Manufacturer sponsored research over the past three years has proven the suitability of styrene-butadiene/ asphalt membranes in many waste disposal seepage control applications for the mining industry in general and uranium mining and milling in particular. The class of membranes that have been tested are SBR/asphalt blends containing up to 68 weight percent asphalt, the balance being elastomeric polymers, fillers and phase compatibility promoters. These membranes are classified as thermoplastic, elastomeric materials and can be hot spray applied to any moderately dry substrate at 177°C (350°F), and placed in service within one hour of application. The properties of this membrane that make it suitable for use as an engineering_ material in these applications are discussed. These properties include chemical resistance, bacterial resistance, UV light resistance, permeability, stress/strain characteristics and bonding data. The favorable economics of the system are also discussed. The preliminary raw test data on the above properties were reported in a previous paper, (Chambers, 1980) and most will not be repeated here. Instead, this report considers the original data in relation to subsequent data and concentrates on interpretation of the trends for engineering purposes. However, several of the pictures contained in the original paper are reproduced in this report for illustration purposes. BACKGROUND Asphalt alone has a long history of use as a water-stop material. Its limitations of becoming brittle when cold and soft when hot, however, are well recognized. The service temperature for common grades of asphalt is usually in the 4° to 49°C (40° to 120° F) range. Modifications to the base asphalt can generally improve its performance at the high end of the temperature range by raising its softening point, but only the addition of one class of modifiers, elastomeric polymers, improves low temperature flexibility as well and also adds resilience. Both of these properties are of extreme importance if the waterstop material is to maintain its integrity when used on substrates which are unstable, non-cohesive, discontinuous or have significant expansion/constraction coefficients. "The excavation of a tunnel in highly weathered and strongly fractured rock masses due to tectonic actions is still a challenge. In order to maintain reasonable productivity, excavation through a wide zone of highly tectonized rock mass requires a detailed, integrated study of the construction solutions and a monitoring system to minimize the process time and to optimize the adopted consolidation measures in accordance with a predefined matrix of possible support systems. This paper summarizes some interesting data acquired during the excavation of the Brenner Railway Base Tunnel system between Italy and Austria. The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) runs through the fault line between the European and the African tectonic plate. This big fault zone is called “Periadriatic Line.” In particular, data acquired in the exploratory-service tunnel have been analyzed. Furthermore, the base concepts for defining the consolidation and support solutions adopted for the excavation of the exploratory tunnel are described. INTRODUCTION The Brenner Railway Base Tunnel (BBT) is a system of underground structures and tunnels that is designed to connect Italy and Austria using new railway standards. It is based on high speed (HS) concepts and applies the European Standards for Interoperability (TSI). The railway includes twin tunnels for a total length of about 55.0 Km without considering the connection tunnels to the existing underground railway in Innsbruck. Including the latter, the total length of the tunnel system reaches 64 Km, and is among the longest tunnels in the world. The Italian section passes through the so-called ""Periadriatic Line,"" which is an important tectonic structure generated by the collision between the European and the African tectonic plates. Despite the extensive investigations carried out (boreholes down to 700 meter depth), significant geological and mechanical uncertainties inside the Periadriatic formations remained unsolved. In order to elevate the level of confidence and observe the behavior of the rock mass at a representative scale, the BBT Authority decided to excavate in advance the service tunnel, which has taken the function of an exploratory tunnel. The data and observations collected during its excavation would provide important insights for the design of the main tunnels."

An aggregate resource study was done for southern Washoe County, Nevada, which contains the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area and a population of about 300,000. The study included an inventory of existing operations, projection of future demand, identification of potential aggregate resources based on geology, and determination of economic potential of these resources. Economic potential was determined by the integration of GIS layers that included aggregate potential, distance from market, distance from major and minor transportation arteries, and elevation. The investigation resulted in a determination that resources of high quality aggregate sufficient for future consumption are present in southern Washoe county; the limiting factor for future utilization is accessibility.

Mineral liberation is one of the primary objectives in comminution circuits for the downstream separation of valuable minerals. Breaking minerals through their grain boundaries (grain-boundary breakage) enables mineral liberation in their natural grain size, removing the need for intensive grinding. This study aimed to evaluate if gaseous carbon dioxide, oxygen, or hydrogen can be used as grinding additives to promote the liberation of chromite grains by grain-boundary breakage. For this purpose, chromite ore particles in the −9.53 + 6.35 mm size fraction were pretreated by exposing them to carbon dioxide, oxygen, or hydrogen flow. Then, the untreated and pretreated samples were broken in a drop-weight tester under the same conditions. Finally, the graderecovery plots of chromite grains in the selected progeny size fractions and the overall progeny distributions were measured and compared. Pretreatment with carbon dioxide flow was found beneficial for grain-boundary breakage. It significantly enhanced the liberation of coarse chromite grains along with the overall progeny fineness. EPMAanalysis showed that the adsorption of carbon dioxide seems to reduce aluminum concentration at grain boundaries, which could be the reason for grain-boundary weakening. These results suggest that carbon dioxide can be used as a grinding additive, reducing the carbon footprint of the mining industry.

Preparation of briquettes by adding CaF2 reagent into the Australian iron ore powder. The structure and morphology of iron ore briquettes during various reduction stages (i.e., Fe2O3→Fe3O4, Fe3O4→FeO, and FeO→Fe) were observed via an ore microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that CaF2 reacted with SiO2 to form CaO and SiF4 gas during the roasting process. The reduction swelling index decreased from 12.36 to 8.83% when the CaF2 content in the briquettes increased due to CaF2-mediated refinement of the hematite grains during the first stage of the reduction process. Lattice distortion resulting from the presence of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice during the second stage of the reduction process, coupled with an increase in the porosity of the iron ore briquettes and the formation of a low-melting-point slag phase, promoted the anisotropic growth of FeO lamellar crystals, which resulted in an increase in the reduction swelling index from 4.27 to 7.36%. During the third stage of the reduction process, the growth of iron whiskers was promoted by wüstite (FeO) lattice distortion caused by a solid solution of Ca2+ in the FeO lattice; the reduction swelling index increased from 15.61 to 24.72%, resulting in the catastrophic swelling of the iron ore briquettes.

"Increasing worldwide energy demands, coupled with desires for cleaner energy, have led to greater research of renewable energies. Strongly weather-dependent energy sources, e.g. solar and wind energy, are unable to provide a constant control energy to withstand the fluctuation of the extensive power systems during peak hours. The pump storage plant Nant de Drance in Switzerland will not only have the capacity of a nuclear power plant, producing 900 MW, but will also combine the environmental aspect and the demand for controlled energy. Nant de Drance is one of the pioneer projects for upcoming energy challenges and serves as a model for future pump storage plants. This paper focuses on the planning process and the project execution of interdisciplinary large-scale projects such as Nant de Drance, including project related data handling, communication systems and project handling skills. Furthermore, the paper discusses mining excavation in the context of large scale projects and their regional environmental challenges, e.g. high alpine rock mass on the site of Nant de Drance. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project Overview Nant de Drance is a 900 MW pump storage plant located in the Swiss Alps. To provide such a high energy storage, six turbines (reversible Francis type), each with a capacity of 150 MW, were installed. Due to the efficiency factor of 80% the pump storage plant is able to provide an energy production of 2500 GWh per annum. Construction of the pump storage plant, which has been selected as “Major Tunneling Project of the Year” in 2014 by NCE and ITA-AITES, will be completed over 10 years. Therefore, the project has been divided in six major phases outlined below: - Launch: 2008 - Access Gallery: 2010 – 2012 - Excavation KMA, KTR: 2011 – 2014 - Concreting KMA, KTR: 2014 – 2016 - Installation of HEM equipment: 2014 – 2018 - Tests & entry into service: 2017 – 2018 Figure 1 outlines the single process phases of the project. For the construction of the shafts, galleries and caverns, 1.7 million m³ of metamorphic rock with sedimentary origin (mica schist & paragneiss of the massif „Aiguilles Rouges“) were excavated. A tunnel network with a total length of 15 km was created. The machine cavern measures 194 m long, 32 m wide and 52 m tall."

The increasing magnitude of our nation's pollution problems seems to stem from two main factors: urbanization and technical advance. In 1920, less than half the country's 106 million people lived in cities. Forty years later, the urban population accounted for 70 percent of the nation's 179 million. It is predicted that by the end of the century, 95 percent of the U. S. population, estimated at 280 million, will live in urban areas. As these people live increasingly in city concentrations, their residues also concentrate. With technological advances to support the increasing population, the variety and quantity of goods that we use also increases. New materials and processes result in increases in pollutants, some of them new. The harmfulness of these pollutants is sometimes known, but sometimes only suspected. One pollutant of concern at the present time is sulfur dioxide, the product of combustion of sulfur-containing fuels. Research on processes to remove sulfur oxides from flue gas has been in progress for many years. Pioneers in this field were the British who, in the early 1930's, installed a full-scale flue gas scrubbing unit on a 120 MW boiler using alkaline water from a Thames estuary plus chalk. Since that time, various methods have been studied by many investigators. Federal laws covering air pollution started with the 1955 Air Pollution Control Act. With the advent of the Air Quality Act of 1967, and subsequent publishing of criteria and available technology for control of sulfur oxides in January 1969, the clamor for information on commercially available control techniques to remove sulfur from fossil fuels has rapidly increased. Although many state-of-the-art papers have deluged the literature during the past several years, the research going on in the area of sulfur oxides control is of such importance that periodic reviews are justified. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to again review the state-of-the-art, but this time from the stand-point of what is immediately commercially available

Although the United States has the world's largest coal reserves, most of those reserves will require underground mining. Unless underground injury and fatality rates are reduced, the number of disabling injuries and accidental deaths will grow as coal production increases. The Bureau's Mining Research Program, designed to reduce the exposure of workers to hazards while improving productivity, is described. Major program thrusts are 1) re- moving the hazards or removing miners from the areas in which hazards exist, 2) developing ways to improve management decisions and mining skills so as to reduce the incidence of situations requiring human involvement in hazardous, emergency, or corrective tasks, and 3) improving, or at least maintaining, productivity so that both the tangible (dollar) and intangible (human) costs are reduced. In these ways, projected demands for coal can be met using resources without an increase in human suffering.
