Ventilation of gas mines keeps necessary sanitation and hygienic conditions for labor in mines and increases the safety by dilution and removal of hazardous and dangerous gases in accordance with the safety rules. Several different concepts exist at the present time to design mine ventilation control systems. But technical ideas have been developed inadequately and technological solutions have not been investigated experimentally enough to build a serviceable system. This paper presents a new concept of high- efficiency mine ventilation process control system (MVPCS). The methods of modern system engineering (Kalman, 1969) are used to establish its functional and algorithmic structure. A three level hierarchical principle of system building is considered.

This paper discusses the development and application of sophisticated monitoring equipment used to measure the operating parameters of conveyor systems. With the radical reduction in price of computer hard- ware and software during the last decade and an associated increase in memory capacity, the concept of continuous conveyor monitor is now a reality. With this tool, the various problems normally encountered in large conveyor installations can now be avoided at an early stage. • The four main areas of application are: • Design verification • Hand-over certification • Preventative maintenance and increase of system availability Failure analysis The paper introduces the techniques used and gives examples where the service has been used.

A new method for the design of long- wall chain pillars, called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), is described. The method provides estimates of the relative stability of different longwall pillar designs during all stages of their service life. The key issue addressed by ALPS is the magnitude and time-of-arrival of the longwall abutment loads applied to chain pillars. A field study was conducted and other available field data were analyzed in order to develop an approach for estimating the abutment loads. An example based on longwall experience in the Pittsburgh seam is used to illustrate how ALPS can be used in mine design.

Hundreds of highway and rail transportation tunnels in North America have been rehabilitated in the last two decades. Tunnel rehabilitation is usually dictated by an owner’s need to extend the working life of the structure, but typically has the added benefit of increasing capacity (greater speed or increased clearance) and enhancing safety. Not only has rehabilitation proven to be an economical alternative to new tunneling, but it can be safely accomplished by working during short work “windows” without taking the tunnel out of service. This paper presents methodology for planning and designing of tunnel rehabilitation projects, and case histories illustrate successful excavation and support technologies.

G. GREGORY BRYAN 33.1-DEFINITIONS 1. Engineering-Engineering may be defined simply as the science and art of making materials and energy serve the purposes of mankind. There are many fields of engineering, each with specialized branches. The basic fields are: civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical. Others may be specialized phases of one of these or a combination of two or more of them. Mining engineering, for example, requires a working knowledge of construction, mechanics, electricity, metallurgy, geology, accounting and economics, in addition to mining techniques or methods. Mining geology and geological engineering involve rocks and their structure and the forces that act upon them, and chemistry, physics and mechanics also are important to practitioners in these fields. Metallurgical engineering requires chemistry and physics but also a working knowledge of mechanics and electricity. The fields of engineering with which this section are concerned are those primarily involved in the finding, mining, processing and utilization of the natural mineral resources of the earth. They include geology, mining engineering and metallurgy, each with several specialized subdivisions. 2. The Engineer-The engineer is an individual who has had specialized training to qualify him to practice the profession of engineering. The term engineer is used here in its broadest sense to include such professions as certain applied branches of geology, physics and chemistry, whose practitioners may not have acquired engineering degrees but who, nevertheless, by training and experience in some area of the minerals industry, qualify under the above definition. To become a successful engineer, a person should have certain pronounced aptitudes and preferences, even before embarking upon the requisite course of training. Among the chief qualifications that the engineer-to-he must possess are: (a) a natural inclination toward mathematics and the physical sciences, and (b) intellectual and moral honesty. Among the qualities the student engineer must develop are: (a) independence of thought, open-mindedness, sound judgment and the ability to observe, deduce, plan and apply solutions, (b) the ability to articulate and convince, and (c) the ability to organize and direct the activity of others. These qualities are normally developed through sound education, followed by pro¬gressive experience. 3. The Consulting Engineer-The consulting engineer is an engineer primarily in the business of furnishing specialized advice and engineering services on an intermit¬tent, part-time or occasional basis to clients who do not have continuous or full-time need for those services. He must be able to make and take full responsibility for decisions and recom¬mendations where original thought is required. He should not be confused with the engineer, surveyor or technician who also may furnish services on an intermittent basis, such as regular periodic surveys, the overseeing of drilling programs and other such routine work as may require little original thought and planning. 33.2-THE PROFESSION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING 33.2.1- QUALITIES REQUIRED A successful consulting engineer must first have, as a minimum, the qualities and preparation of an engineer. Iron and manganese both are important ferrous metals, and they usually need to be extracted separately for better usage. Ferromanganese ore from the Yunnan Province of China was investigated by subjecting it to reduction roasting, leaching, magnetic separation, hydrometallurgical separation process, X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). It is noted that the ferromanganese ore contains valuable components or elements of 21.41 wt%Fe2O3 and 19.88 wt%MnO, which are 14.99% and 15.40% of the total of Fe and Mn, respectively, with a large amount of impurities comprising 33.00 wt% SiO2, 9.81%wt%Al2O3, etc. After roasting, microscopic examination showed the presence of haematite, magnetite, pyrolusite, psilomelane, hollandite, marcasite, pyrite, limonite, braunite and manganite, while XRD analysis showed that the magnetite content increases with the increase in roasting temperature, reflecting the increase in conversion of haematite to magnetite. Based on EPMAand SEM-EDS analysis, it was shown that the haematite and magnetite interface were the main Fe-bearing minerals; however, the dissemination of the two minerals, that is, haematite andmagnetite with the coexistence of Fe- and Mn-bearing minerals, will result in difficulty in effective separation of Fe and Mn. The effective roasting temperature and roasting time were 800 °C and 60 min, respectively, to avoid the formation of a composite oxide of MnxFe3-xO4 beyond 800 °C. The Fe recovery via roasting and magnetic separation only was 66.56%, whereas a combination of magnetic separation which ensued after the leaching process showed a recovery of 80.08% and 59.95% of Fe and Mn, respectively.

"This study focuses on partial leaching of coal pyrite with sodium sulfite in order to increase its degree of liberation from the coal matrix, which might help to increase the removal of coal pyrite, together with trace elements of arsenic (As), selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) by froth flotation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines’ two-stage reverse flotation process was applied to further reject coal pyrite in the second stage, where pyrite was floated while coal was depressed. The results show that the leached coal flotation with sodium sulfite produced lower pyritic sulfur content in the clean coal by approximately 25% compared to the flotation of unleached coal. The synergism mechanism between the leaching and the two-stage flotation is delineated. The rejection of trace elements (As, Hg and Se) after the two-stage flotation process with unleached coal followed approximately that of pyritic sulfur (64.6%). However, after the two-stage flotation with leached coal, the rejection of Se was as high as that of pyritic sulfur (77.9%), while the rejections of As and Hg were 20% lower than that of pyritic sulfur, or followed approximately the same rejections obtained through the two-stage flotation with unleached coal.IntroductionSO2 is a reducing reagent, but when it is combined with oxygen in an acidic solution, it will become a strong oxidizing reagent for leaching coal pyrite. Sundaram et al. (2001) found that the reagent could leach coal pyrite to produce ferric iron, which, in turn, catalyzed the oxidation of SO2. Similarly, Cho et al. (2009) found that the reagent could leach pyrite as well as mercury from coal. In the present study, coal was preconditioned by partially leaching coal pyrite in water-coal slurry with sodium sulfite at 48° C. The partial leaching of coal pyrite may enhance its degree of liberation from the coal matrix and give a chance to be rejected more effectively during the flotation.The two-stage U.S. Bureau of Mines’ reverse flotation process (Miller, 1975) was used in this study. The first stage is conventional flotation, in which coal is floated while material with higher ash and pyrite content remains in the cell. Kerosene is used as a promoter to float the coal and MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) is used as a frother. In the second stage, the floated coal from the first stage is depressed using a starch-based reagent, while coal pyrite is floated using potassium amyl xanthate. In this second stage, the liberation of coal pyrite from the coal matrix seems to be an important factor for successful rejection of coal pyrite."

X-ray computed tomography (CT) images of rock specimens often contain artifacts which must be corrected before scientific analyses are performed. This paper presents a new workflow of automated image processing to utilize poor-quality X-ray CT scan images. The workflow runs on the open-source image analysis software and efficiently separates desired features from low-contrast scanned images. The new workflow is a two-step technique using contrast enhancement and automated feature segmentation to generate noise-free binary images. The results of binary images using the proposed workflow and using a conventional thresholding technique are analyzed to show the quality of the proposed method. The paper also presents a workflow of estimating the structural geometries of features in two and three dimensions. The results of the structural feature analyses and computational time were compared between the open-source (ImageJ) and commercial image analysis software (Bruker Computed Tomography Analyzer). The commercial software was more computationally efficient, but the task-specific macros in open-source software enabled the user-desired automation in image processing and data extraction of desired structural features of comparable quality.

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

Derjaguin and Dukhin (1961) were the first to develop a model for bubble-particle interaction in flotation from first principles by considering the surface forces in wetting (or flotation) films. The model predicted that the energy barriers to bubble-particle attachment arise from the ζ-potentials of fine particles, which corroborates well with an earlier work of Fuerstenau (1957) reported for the flotation of quartz using dodecyl ammonium acetate (DAA) as collector. In the present work, a series of surface force measurements have been conducted by accurately monitoring the changes in bubble curvature during bubble-silica surface interactions. The curvature changes are then used to determine the capillary force, which is the sum of the hydrodynamic and surface forces. By subtracting the former that can also be determined from the curvature changes, one obtains the surface forces (or disjoining pressure). The results obtained as functions of pH and collector concentrations show that control of the ζ-potentials of bubbles relative to those of the silica surfaces is critical for maximizing the negative disjoining pressure, which is conducive to promoting bubble-particle attachment in flotation.

It is a pleasure to participate in this Fall meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers to discuss energy conservation trends in the cement industry. Energy is the "life blood" of American industry, and the ability to use available energy resources efficiently may well determine the future of our nation and of its industries. The Federal Energy Administration has classified cement manufacture as one of several energy-intensive industries in the U.S. and has selected the Portland Cement Association to make a detailed study of possible energy conservation measures. Member companies of the Portland Cement Association represent about 85% of the cement producing capacity of the United States and 100% of Canadian capacity. Stated briefly, the purpose of the Association is to extend the uses of portland cement and concrete through research and development, market promotion, education, and public affairs work. PCA's general offices and research laboratories are located in Skokie, Illinois. Our staff of engineers, scientists, and research personnel make the PCA uniquely qualified to perform an energy conservation study of the kind requested by FEA.

The paper investigates the effects of calcination for thermal activation and intensive milling for mechanical activation on aluminum recovery by acid leaching of pyrophyllite ore enriched via attrition scrubbing and froth flotation. The study compares these methods in terms of energy consumption and aluminum recovery, concluding that mechanical activation is more economical and environmentally friendly.

Recent antipollution legislation for the control of mine tailings and waste-water has required an increasing number of tailings ponds. Many of these new waste-retention ponds are being constructed in congested locations, or the older ponds have reached such a size that--if failure occurs--they pose a threat to human life and public property. Although the typical tailings-disposal embankment represents--to the casual-, observer or the economy-minded mine official--a rather ugly but benign and stable pile of waste, they are in fact an extremely sensitive structural mass, retained behind the frailest of dikes. Failure of the waste mass requires only a minor change in water retention or weather conditions, erosion or piping of the ground strata, shifts in load or slight earth tremors. When failures occur, the results can be disastrous. In the U.S., we have been fortunate that, so far, pond failures have not caused loss of life. Thus, failures in this country have attracted little public attention. Present tailings-pond construction methods used by the mining industry require the barest money investment, and little engineering effort. Unfortunately, this superficial approach may increase short-term profits, but the practice may be conducive to the construction of needlessly weak structures. In coming years many of these designs will probaly become corporate liabilities. A typical pond is portrayed in Figure IA. This particular pond in Arizona is 1 mile long and 3/4 mile wide. BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson's Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. Field data combined with theoretical derivations were used to design a surface mining operation using explosive casting. Calculated casting results varied from 44 to 65% depending on bench height. This model was then applied to field tests at an eastern, contour, coal stripping operation. Results from five experimental casting shots are summarized and compared to conventional mining methods. The overburden material removed by casting ranged from 35 to 65% with an average of 50%. Fragmentation was improved and it was demonstrated that this procedure is economically attractive with a resultant cost savings of $.59/m3 or $5.93/t of clean coal.

In a fully mechanized top coal caving mining process, the mechanical properties of the top coal deteriorate constantly, and the stability of the support is determined by the boundary position of the top coal entering the limit equilibrium state. Top coal flaking occurs more easily along the advancing direction owing to an increase in the distance of the boundary from the wall. Moreover, the strength of the coal seam is an important factor that determines the boundary position. The equation of the top coal limit equilibrium zone boundary, used in fully mechanized top coal caving mining, was determined based on the limit equilibrium theory, continuum damage mechanics, and the Hoek–Brown rock empirical strength criterion. Using the RFPA3D and UDEC numerical analysis methods, the effect of top coal strength on the mechanical behavior during the mining process was determined; and the space–time relationship between the top coal deformation failure, damage evolution, and boundary of the limit equilibrium zone was established. The results revealed that when the coal mass entered the limit equilibrium zone, accelerated crack development, accelerated damage, and axial unloading occurred. Moreover, an increase in the coal seam strength caused the boundary of the top coal limit equilibrium zone to be closer to the wall. By comparing the numerical results with the theoretical results, the overall trend was found to be consistent, allowing the verification of the rationality and reliability of the determination equation of the boundary position of the limit equilibrium zone.

With vehicles frequently found in underground mines and tyres being a major fuel item, the risk of tyre fires will be severe underground. This study presents an in-depth analysis of tyre fires on mining vehicles to increase the knowledge of the risk, applying data from full-scale fire experiments and CFD simulations. It was found that the wheelhouse of the loader caused an increase in the flame tilt angle of approximately 10%, decreasing the flame impingement and heat flux downstream. The flame temperature of the drilling rig tyre was found to be approximately 7% higher than the loader tyre, increasing the risk of igniting adjacent fuel items. The construction of the wheelhouse/mudguard will contribute to a longer flame length by creating a fuel-rich environment. The CFD simulations predicted higher flame tilt angles for the drilling rig case for higher flow velocities, indicating the influence of a varying wheelhouse/mudguard construction and tyre geometry on the flame tilt angle. The construction of the loader resulted in a flow behaviour, where the short distance to the front mudguard/tyre and the separation of flow directly downstream of the protruding construction led to fire gases being steered past the front mudguard/tyre. In the drilling rig case, the longer distance to the front mudguard/tyre led to fire gases being directed towards the body of the vehicle after passing the area with flow separation. An increased knowledge of the tyre fire risk on mining vehicles and mitigating measures would improve the fire safety in underground mines.

Metallic droplets can remain attached to solid particles within liquid slags, resulting in production losses in several movement of solid particles in the liquid slag in a system, considering the attachment of liquid metal droplets to solid slag and on the resulting microstructures is investigated as a function of the velocity of the particles. For all wetting For the amount of metal attached to the particle, a clear trade-off was found between the speed of motion of the solid particle and the wetting regime.

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan and a dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat(TM)3. Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the uariables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors.
