"Discrete event simulation is a stochastic mathematical modeling tool with applications in queuing systems. Many mining operations, both surface and underground, can be simulated in the context of queuing theory , for example open pit loading and haulage operation, underground level and vertical transportation, and mineral processing circuits. A computer simulation model of the operation is an invaluable tool to study both the system’s dynamics and conducting sensitivity analysis on different effective elements on system performance. In this paper, merits of discrete event simulation in decision making in mining engineering is discussed. Moreover, a stochastic simulation framework for selection and sizing of shovels and dump trucks in surface mining is presented to elaborate one example for applicability of the method in mining operations. INTRODUCTION Mathematical modeling is a valuable tool in design, optimization, and decision making in both surface and underground mining operations. Several researchers have tried to study different aspects of mining operations using a wide range of mathematical techniques such as linear programming[1], analytical hierarchy process [2], non-linear programming[3], genetic algorithms[4-5] ,mixed integer programming [6], machine repair model[7], queuing theory [8], and conventional spreadsheet calculations based on experience and engineering judgments. There are different uncertainties in typical mining operations (e.g. material loading and haulage, drilling, and blasting). For example, in a truck-shovel operation, different governing activities such as loading, haulage, and dumping cycles are stochastic variables. Moreover, analytical modeling of a large truck-shovel operation is very complicated. Thus, application of analytical and/or deterministic techniques cannot guarantee a solution for different problems that are encountered in daily mining operations. Discrete-event system simulation (DES) is a modeling method for such time discrete and probabilistic phenomena [9]. DES has been employed by different researchers in mining engineering through available software and languages such as GPSS, SIMAN- ARENA, and SLAM [10-14]. Most of the studies so far, tried to evaluate some “what-if” scenarios, to understand the possible effects of changing different input variables on overall mine economics. For instance, Baffi and Ataeepur (1996) used Arena to simulate a truck-shovel operation [10]. Also, Sturgul has conducted extensive studies in the application of DES in the mining engineering field [15- 17]. A very good background review of application of this technique in the industry can be found in [15-16]. Previous studies have shown that, different approaches including deterministic, stochastic, and experimental methodologies result in considerable differences in outputs [18]. These techniques lead to different solutions, regardless of the quality of technique/software itself or knowledge of the modeling team. Hence, the first step is to develop a comprehensive simulation framework to obtain nearly the same optimal results for the same input variables, regardless of the employed technique."

Wet magnetic separation methods for recovering hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines are investigated in this paper. These methods include wet high intensity and high gradient magnetic separations, carrier or "piggy-back" magnetic method, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicates that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines whereas other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behaviour of these minerals with respect to magnetizing field, particle size and temperature is also presented.

The extraction of copper from sulfate leaching liquor was investigated using Acorga M5640 commercial extractant in kerosene diluent. The effects of important factors such as the extractant concentration, contact time, liquor pH, and temperature were examined on the separation factor Cu/Fe and the extraction efficiency of copper. The results indicated that nearly 92.32% copper was extracted from the leach liquor at 10% (v/v) Acorga M5640 concentration, 1:1 aqueous/organic phase ratio, 20 min contact time, pH 2.5, and 25 °C temperature. Also, the further increase in the values determined had no positive impact on the extraction of copper. Under these conditions, the separation factor Cu/Fe was obtained about 29.64. The extraction mechanism was studied applying the plot of log(D) – 2 pH against log [extractant] and it proved the association of two moles of Acorga M5640 for the extraction of one mole of copper. McCabe–Thiele diagram was constructed and a single-step extraction process was found to obtain themaximumextraction. Additionally, thermodynamic datawere investigated and the extraction process was endothermic and non-spontaneous at 298 K (ΔH = 27.05 and ΔG = 15.52 kJ mol−1). Moreover, the loaded organic phase was stripped and 80.94% copper was recovered after 20 min using 10% sulfuric acid concentration.

Following the Sago Mine accident, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asked the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center to study several possible methane explosion scenarios in the Sago coal mine. The study used a 0.3-m (1-ft) resolution map of the mine to produce a 3-dimensional (3 D) model of a portion of the mine, including the sealed area where the explosion occurred. An advanced 3 D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was used to calculate the explosion pressures within the sealed area, on the mine seals and in nearby regions of the mine. Based on the best available information on methane concentrations and assumptions on homogeneity and on layering and mix composition, three separate initial conditions of methane-air concentrations and location were studied. This paper discusses the CFD modeling technique, the results of the calculations, the challenges of conducting this type of modeling and the advantages and limitations of CFD modeling of accident investigations of mine explosions.

Long-term monitoring is necessary to successfully develop predictive subsidence models. Thus, the Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program (IMSRP) has documented subsidence over a longwall mine in south-central Illinois throughout a 3-year period. No monitoring results of this duration have been previously published for longwall mining in Illinois. To study the effects of surface subsidence and the rate of subsidence, precise level surveying was conducted at the site two or three times a year. Level surveys were conducted at approximately the same time of year using a WILD NA-2 level with a micrometer. Second-Order, Class-I, closure errors were obtained in each survey. Survey monuments were designed to minimize frost-induced movements. At this particular site in southern Illinois, subsidence over chain pillars and the panel centerline continued 3 years after mining. Since mining in 1988, 6.67 feet of subsidence or 70% of the extracted height has been documented over the panel centerline, with almost 0.30 feet in the last two years. The area over the chain pillars has subsided a total of 1.44 feet, with 0.44 feet occurring within the last 2 years. Monitoring over the chain pillars and at the centerline shows the residual subsidence to be fairly uniform. Monitoring is continuing over both of these areas. Long-term monitoring data can be used to improve evaluation of subsidence effects on land and structures. However, coal companies will time mitigation activities depending on other factors including the threshold of structural damage, type of repair needed, and maintenance of landowner and company relations.

Control of the environment is as old as mining. Engineers have always had to consider how best to deal with the surface, and the character of the surface environment always affects mining method in some way. However, if the relationship of the mine to the environment is old, today's approach is new. For one thing, land, air and water formerly could be viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome or resources to be utilized to win ore at the lowest possible cost. Now we have come to realize that these nonmineral components of the environment also are highly valuable. For another thing, environ- mental protection has become a public policy issue. Again, a special public interest in land and land use is old. From the firs(, the crown claimed extra rights in valuable minerals, and to this day a multitude of laws and regulations control-and tax-land use in every country. What is new is the detailed public attention bring given to waste management practices, whether these wastes be in the form of solids, liquids or gases, and regardless of where in the environment they appear. (It is convenient to lump all mining environmental problems, including hank fires and subsidence, together under the term "waste management," for in effect that is what they are.) As a result of these changes, the mining engineer must consider that lie is dealing with two productive resources the minerals and the remainder of the environment-and he must expect that lie will be judged not only on his efficiency in recovering the one but also on his effectiveness in protecting the other. Further, in seeking to protect the environment, the modern mining-environmental engineer has a dual role. First, there is the obvious task of finding better ways for industry to cope with waste-management problems in actual operations. Second, there is the less obvious but equally important task of helping formulate appropriate public policy objectives for the environment. Throughout; the section it is assumed that mining is an acceptable land use for the tracts under consideration. The question of whether mining will be permitted at all on these tracts is a further public-policy issue, ultimately to be resolved politically and thus, since it is beyond the scope of engineering, is not a subject that can be usefully discussed in a mining handbook. Finally, none of the statements in the section are predicated on the assumption that required waste-management measures will be privately profitable in the conventional sense. Indeed, the reverse is more likely to be the case-at least if accounts are kept so as to include all appreciable costs and a normal rate of return on investment in waste-disposal and reclamation equipment.',',' However, it is clear that improved waste management will be required of mining firms and that, to a considerable although undetermined degree, this expenditure is in the best long-run interest of both public and industry. The several studies that have attempted to quantify the impact of mining on the environment are admittedly rough but still provide enough information to indicate that there is a big job to be done. "Four main and three minor rare-earth-element (REE)-bearing minerals were identified and quantified in the Kiirunavaara apatite iron ore tailings using optical microscopy, an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and a mineral liberation analyzer, and their chemical compositions were analyzed by the EPMA and laser ablation inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry. REEs are shown to be contained in the minerals apatite, monazite, allanite, titanite, zircon, thorite and synchysite. In zircon, thorite and synchysite, they occurred in only trace amounts and contributed limited amounts to the total REE budget, and these are consequently of minor importance. Monazite occurred as inclusions in apatite and as free particles, 90 percent liberated. Allanite occurred to some degree in mixed grains with magnetite but also as free particles. Monazite mainly reported to the apatite concentrate, while allanite and titanite largely went to the tailings, the latter preferably to those fractions smaller than 38 µm. The amount of titanite in the finest tailings fraction was 2.3 weight percent, containing close to 1 percent REEs, with heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) making up 28 percent of the total REEs. However, a texturally distinct group of titanite grains showed an HREE/REE ratio of up to 67 percent. Furthermore, titanum dioxide analyses indicate that titanite is preferentially released into the tailings from the secondary magnetic separation step in the concentrator. Our data therefore suggest that titanite, occasionally enriched in HREEs, can be extracted from the processing stream and might thus be considered a new source for REEs at Kiirunavaara and similar deposits.IntroductionDeposits of apatite iron ores are the major source for iron in the European Union and are exploited by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) in several mines in the Kiruna-Malmberget area in northern Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest of the apatite iron orebodies in Sweden, comprising more than 2 Gt of iron ore with 60 to 68 percent iron (Fe). At the end of 2015, the total accumulated production of crude ore from openpit and underground mining since the start of mining was 1,566 Mt, with ore reserves of 644 Mt grading 46.3 percent Fe (LKAB, 2016). The deposit defines a steeply dipping tabular body, approximately 6 km long and up to 180 m thick, extending at least 1,500 m below the surface. It is situated in the middle part of the Palaeoproterozoic Kiirunavaara Group of volcanic rocks and follows the contact between a thick pile of trachyandesitic lava and overlying pyroclastics (Martinsson, 2004)."

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

The capabilities of the analog computer, the Mine Ventilation Simulator, installed at WHA's Safety and Health Technology Center in Denver, Colorado, are discussed. General opera- ting procedures are described showing how a mine model is produced, and how the model can subsequently be modified to produce a solution to a mine ventilation problem. A sample problem is included to illustrate the technique. The important role the Mine Ventilation Simulator plays in ventilation training is discussed, including experiences with the education of students at the Colorado School of Mines. This paper includes a summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the analog technique and suggests some design criteria for application to future development of analog computers, based on experience gained with the Mine Ventilation Simulator.

An 18.5 km (12 mile) long tunnel is being driven by four Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBMs) of 4.7 m (15.5 ft.) diameter through alluvial sand, gravel, silt and clay above and below the groundwater table in Los Angeles beneath buildings, railroads, freeways and the L.A. River. Continuous automatic data recording of TBM operation and field inspectors' records, accompanied by monitoring of 5,000 surface reference points and 268 borehole extensometers were used to obtain information. The paper explains the reason for selecting the method of EPB-tunneling to ensure stability of the tunnel and meeting of environmental requirements, and presents data collected to monitor and demonstrate the performance of the TBM sin the different ground conditions encountered.

A 1 t/d continuous elution pilot plan is being operated by General Mining at their Grootvlei Gold Mine using the technology developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories. Flowsheet design and plant erection was carried out by Van Eck & Lurie and completed in December 1989. Following the conclusion of six test runs designed to optimise reagent additions, it was shown that elution efficiencies of 98-99% could be achieved using reagent additions as· low as 16 kg/ton of carbon NaCN and 28 kg/ton NaOH while consistently producing eluted carbon containing less than 50 g/t gold. Significant savings were indicated when compared and power were indicated when com­pared with the traditional batch AARL, Zadra and Micron alcohol elution procedures.

The construction of the continuing expansion of the Los Angeles Metro System has required the construction of eight new station structures. One contractor proposed, as a construction alternative for the support of excavation of the Hollywood/Vine Station, the use of soil-mix walls instead of the conventional soldier piles and wood lagging. Soldier piles and shotcrete or wood lagging support systems had been generally used on the other sub-way station excavations constructed to date throughout the system. Immediately east of that station and in almost exactly the same geology, the Hollywood/Western Station was being excavated at the same time using a conventional support system. This paper com-pares the performance of these two support systems in the alluvial soils of the Los Angeles Basin.

In an effort to promote sustainability in the construction industry, the natural decorative stones that cover large external areas of buildings may be replaced with artificial stones. In this paper the physical and mechanical properties of artificial decorative stones are presented and are critically compared with corresponding natural stones. To test suitability for various applications, artificial stone specimens were subjected to weathering testing (freezing-thaw cycles in a climatic chamber). Mechanical characterization of these specimens was based on uniaxial compressive testing as well as non-destructive ultrasonic testing. Preliminary results show that artificial stones can replace natural stones, thus creating a sustainable development option for the construction industry.

Concrete-infused cloth is used in several civil and mining surface applications whose circumstances are similar to some of those in underground mining. A feature of this material is that it cannot be overhydrated. In underground conditions, however, the excess supply of water to the cloth for hydration could lead to muddy and potentially unsafe working conditions, as well as resource wastage by supplying more water to the construction site than is needed. The objective of this study is to verify the water-to-cloth ratio and study the effect of hydration level on the strength of the Concrete Cloth product. We found that the strength increases with increased hydration up to a 1:2 water-to-cloth ratio by weight, after which the strength holds steady regardless of additional hydration. This confirms the 1:2 water-tocloth ratio by weight for hydration and confirms that strength is retained even if the cloth is excessively hydrated.

Particulate matter (PM) is one of the main actors related to air pollution caused by surface mining. Fugitive dust, considered as particulate matter that cannot be collected by conventional measures, is classified by the particle size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes PM as coarse and fine particles based on the particle size being less than 10 μm (PM10) and less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Basic operations of surface mining such as drilling and blasting, loading, haulage, and processing are processes that can potentially generate fugitive dust. Regulations and legislations enforce the mining industry to use environmental monitoring systems, fugitive dust level measured by PM10 level as part of this. Air quality monitors are positioned at different locations around surface coal mines and track air quality levels during production. This study introduces a data-driven methodology to handle air quality issues related to fugitive dust at surface coal mines. Data is sourced from different mine equipment in real-time and they are integrated with air quality monitoring systems to provide information to support decisions for fugitive dust. The method is implemented and demonstrated in a case study at a large surface coal mine.

Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their coal. Sulfur was the major concern, with BTU and sodium limiting the market for some. The Clean Air Act has extended the PRB market into plants converting from other coals. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents affecting boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to control cost more stringently than ever. Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.
