U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2004 was estimated to be 790 kt (871,000 st), valued at $43 million free-on-board plant. This was below 2003 and about the same volume as 2002. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures, and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar and shipments of glass containers increased by about 4 percent. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continue to increase, taking the place of U.S. produced goods, and the feldspar required to make them. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite.

The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress (IMVC) was held May 17-22,1997, in Pittsburgh, PA. This marked the second time that the IMVC was held in the United States. The first congress, organized in 1975 by the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa, was held in Johannesburg. Since then, the meetings have been held every four or five years, with the 1979 meeting being held in Reno, NV. This was followed by Harrogot, England, in 1984; Brisbane, Australia, in 1988; and Johannesburg, South Africa, again in 1992. The IMVC provides an international forum in the field of mine ventilation for the purpose of sharing technology and experience. The meetings are attended by ventilation engineers, academics, consultants, government employees and vendors interested in mine ventilation. As was evident from this meeting, significant progress has been made in the field of mine ventilation. However, disasters continue to occur around the world and long-term health problems continue to affect workers. So there is a need for further improvements in ventilation technology. The highlight of the conference was the technical sessions in which more than 80 papers were presented by authors from more than 20 countries. In addition to the technical sessions, the conference featured field trips to a number of mine properties throughout the United States. Five short courses were offered on topics ranging from respirable-dust control to mine fires and explosions. The conference also featured a trade show. It exhibited the latest advances in ventilation equipment, computer application software, consulting and engineering services, and health and safety equipment.

A symposium on the characterization and toxicology of mineral dusts was held Sept. 19 and20 in Washington, D.C. The symposium was held to update the minerals industry, the health community, government agencies and academia on the technical, health and regulatory aspects of minerals to be evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).In October 1996, the IARC met in Lyon, France, to discuss and prepare “Volume 68 of the IARC Mono-graphs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans on Silica, Silicates, Dusts and Organic Fibers.”

Partition curves are used to evaluate the separation performance of gravity-based concentrators. The partition curve is used to identify the nominal density cutpoint and relative sharpness of the separation. In addition, the graphical representation makes it possible to quickly identify the root cause of misplacement based on the characteristic shape of the partition curve. Partition curves have been traditionally constructed using data obtained from float-sink tests using heavy organic liquids. These toxic liquids are environmentally unfriendly and have been banned in several countries. Another method of establishing the partition curve is to introduce density tracers into the feed and plot the distribution to the lights and heavies. For heavy mineral separations, this approach is generally impractical due to the fine particle size. In addition, the partition data obtained using these existing techniques do not account for secondary factors such as particle shape that may influence the separation. In light of these problems, a methodology was developed for constructing partition curves using experimental data obtained from microscopic grain-counts. This technique, which essentially uses the different mineral species as density tracers, provides a powerful tool for evaluating heavy mineral separations. A case study is provided to demonstrate how this analytical approach can be used to assess and improve the separaton performance in an industrial upgrade plant.

The objective of EU waste policy is to reintroduce used materials into the economic cycle, especially by recycling, or to return them to the environment in a useful state or at least a harmless state. To support decision-making in complex systems, the standardised ISO 14040 life cycle assessment (LCA) method can be used to quantify and to interpret the environmental repercussions of (changes in) a product system from cradle to crave related to a functional service unit. The use of the standardised LCA method at European level can be characterised as a damage-oriented or top-down method, which is often used in product design. Winning, extraction and processing of metals are part of the interconnected worldwide metals production system linked to product design, manufacture and recycling. This complexity cannot be dealt with using LCA. This paper will discuss a dynamic model that deals with this complexity, at the same time providing detailed bottom-up insight into the complex web of materials referred to as Metal Ecology. An example on the replacement on lead in solders will be discussed to illustrate this.

In an effort to reduce the risks to underground miners of health hazards associated with exposure to high concentrations of diesel particulate matter(dpm), the Mine Safety and Health Administration(MSHA) published proposed rules in 1998 limiting dpm exposure in both underground coal and metal and nonmetal mines. The proposed rule for underground coal mines would require removal of 95% of dpm by mass, while the rule for metal and nonmetal mines would eventually limit total carbon exposure from dpm to 160 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift. The comment period for both proposed standards ended on July 26, 1999.In this session, representatives from MSHA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), equipment manufacturers, labor and industry will discuss the impact of the proposed regulations on mine operations and worker health. Questions will be taken from the audience after brief presentations from each panelist. This paper provides a compilation of written summaries of each panelist’s opening presentation.

This is the sixth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data plus more than 100 new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. An article in the December 1984 Kentucky Coal Journal could have far reaching applications. It explains that a banking firm examined the "reserve risk" as one of six factors for analysis when financing a coal project. The firm concluded that coal reserves in Kentucky are worth an average of $0.29/t ($0.26 per st) in-place. The banking firm based this in-place value on its examination of more than 50 leases. In-place value is especially important when trying to establish a mineral value for a given deposit. Ernie Lehman wrote to this author after last year's column appeared and he quoted the lease rates for lead and zinc on federal land. He states, from first hand information, that the leases are based on a percentage of net smelter return as follows: 4% for the first five years, 4.5% for the next five years, and 5% thereafter. The figures used in last year's column ($ per st) came from dividing reported royalty income by reported production. The information reported last year merely translates the results of the net smelter return (as written in the lease) to royalty income per ton to the US Government for the various years. Statistics from the Minerals Management Service of the Federal Government show that oil and gas account for 40% and 53%, respectively, of the Federal royalty income. Coal accounts for about 4% and all other minerals, the remaining 3%. Oil and gas leases are mostly at 12.5%. Most of the coal leases are at 12.5% for surface mining operations and 8% for underground mining. Many of the other commodities are leased at 5%, which has been true for decades. Relative to Federal leases, this year's table shows some percentages and some costs per ton. This was done to give information about the leases and also to show income produced by various commodities. Note that some commodities have a variation in $/ton even though the royalty percent is the same. These variations result from a combination of factors that influence the value of a mineral commodity. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; *quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give the location - either by state, US geographic area or Canadian province; the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cu ft), tons (/T, 2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.7646 m3 1 cu ft = 0.2832 m3 1st=0.9078t 1 acre = 0.4047 hm or m2 In several cases, the royalty is a percentage of the sales price of the finished product and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. Reliable stress measurement using hollow inclusion gauges and monitoring stress change using borehole stress meters and borehole deformation gauges in anisotropic rock remains a challenge for the rock mechanics community. In this regard, the complex variable method advanced in 1983 for deducing stress in anisotropic rock is flawed and software is privileged. Fortunately, advances in computer hardware and software now enable fast, reliable reduction of hollow inclusion stress measurement data for determining stress in anisotropic rock. Monitoring stress change in anisotropic rock poses a different challenge but is also subject to numerical analysis. Stress measurement using a hollow inclusion (HI) gauge such as the triaxial Australian HI is done in four steps: 1) drilling a measurement hole, 2) installation of an HI, 3) stress relief of the HI by overcoring, and 4) data reduction. The last step, data reduction, is the focus of this work. The process is well-known in linearly elastic, isotropic rock (Worotniki and Walton 1976, Duncan Fama and Pender 1980). However, in case of linearly elastic, anisotropic rock the requisite technology is not readily available. This situation is somewhat surprising because anisotropy is more often the rule rather than the exception, especially in the neighborhood of ore bodies. Rahn (1984) has pointed out the potential for significant errors with neglect of anisotropy and the adverse consequences for engineering design. Amadei (1984) has also pointed out the potential for errors with neglect of anisotropic rock properties in stress measurement. Worotniki (1993) cites other studies that indicate potential for serious errors when doing measurements in anisotropic rock. In both theoretical cases (isotropy and anisotropy), data reduction is essentially a composite of solutions to boundary value problems in linear elasticity. In the finite element approach, the analysis is a simulation of gauge hole drilling, installation and overcoring. Two important advantages with the finite element approach are a more faithful representation of the conditions of HI stress measurement than approximated in theory and the capability for handling rock whether isotropic, transversely isotropic or fully anisotropic

Since Guild 1 and Snelgrove 2 attracted our attention to the relationships between certain endogenic ore deposits and plate boundaries, an abundant flow of papers appeared in the metallogenic literature concerned with this problem and its application to mineral exploration. Some of the papers only speculate with the formation of specific type of ore deposit 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 Other papers are more concerned with genetic and structural relationships between plate tectonics and mineralization 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 They are philosophical, in that they are generalized and refer to no specific area. Yet it is true that a large part of the world mineral potential is concentrated at the convergence of oceanic and continental plates, for example, around the Pacific. Therefore, the interaction of two plates by either subduction, obduction or slippage likely has an important role for the genesis and/or the (structural) control of these "orogenic" ore deposits. If subduction is the driving mechanism for the generation of igneous rocks 21, 22 and endogenic ore deposits 18, volcanic activity and the nature of volcanic products certainly are the major geologic processes and events to be tested. Fonteilles 23 and Alsac 24 have already emphasized the important relationship between mineralization and the talc-alkaline affinity of the volcanics. The Andean orogen is one of the best areas for testing such genetic relationships. Rich and varied endogenic and volcanogenic ore deposits occur there and plate interaction is still active.

It is widely agreed throughout the mining community that federal mine safety and health legislation administered by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) deserves significant credit for the past quarter-century's remarkable improvements in miner safety and health. Recently, however, it has been suggested that the mining industry in the United States has now evolved to a point that current mine safety and health law may be obsolete. This proposition deserves attention. Today, I propose to give it the close logical scrutiny that is its due. I conclude that the obsolescence of current mine safety and health law is not supported by the evidence. The existing mine safety and health law continues to serve as a critically important supplement to mine operators' safety programs at a modest cost to the taxpayer. At the same time, trends in a changing industry do call for responsive adaptations in the Federal mine safety and health program. I will argue that timely and appropriate responses to changing needs can be accomplished within the framework of existing legislation, provided federal officials avail themselves of the flexibility provided by existing law.

Introduction The efficient process control of a uranium mill and its associated mining operation requires a nearly continuous knowledge of the uranium concentration in the ore. Generally, the approach is to use laboratory assays of grab samples from the mill feed belt. In some cases, elaborate and expensive systems have been used to ensure random sampling, but even with these systems, mass-balance discrepancies still exist. There is a requirement for an on-line instrument that can give a prompt, accurate analysis of a large portion of the feed stock. The authors have recently evaluated a laboratory system that achieves these goals using neutron activation and delayed neutron counting. The development of the on-line uranium ore analyzer is a consequence of previous work done at the Whiteshell Nuclear Research Establishment (WNRE) (Campbell et al., 1978 and 1981), and is based on the emission of delayed neutrons after the neutron irradiation of fissionable materials. The mechanism of delayed neutron emission has been described (Keepin, 1965), but briefly is as follows. The fission fragments resulting from irradiation are in an excited state. Certain of these delayed fission products, precursors, decay to a more stable state by the emission of a delayed neutron. The delayed neutrons can be divided into six groups with effective half-lives ranging from 0.2-55 sec. It is important to note that more than 50% of the delayed neutrons are emitted within the first 6 sec after irradiation; this has an influence on the design of the analysis instrument. Measurement Cycle The measurement cycle involves a neutron irradiation, a delay time, and a counting period. The laboratory demonstration model of the ore analyzer comprises a californium-252 neutron source, a source chamber, a pneumatic transfer facility, and a neutron irradiation and counting module (Fig. 1). The ore sample is placed in the irradiation chamber. The neutron source is transferred to the center of the chamber for a 5-sec irradiation while the helium-3 thermal neutron detectors are switched off. As the source returns to the storage chamber, the detectors are switched on and the delayed neutrons counted. The total assay cycle is 16 sec. The current instrument design calls for the ore to be cut from the main belt every 16 sec by a mechanical arm and dropped into the analyzer directly, or via another belt. The cycle starts when there is a sufficient mass of ore in the irradiation chamber to depress a switch and stops when the delayed neutron count is finished. The ore is then dropped through the bottom of the analyzer chamber and returned to the main belt. The counts from each cycle are accumulated and the data reduced to give the desired information. The source is contained in an iron capsule and pneumatically transferred between the irradiation/counting and storage chambers. The irradiation/counting chamber possesses 12, 600-mm (24-in.) long helium-3 thermal neutron detectors embedded in an annulus of wax (Fig. 1). Two sets of six detectors are each interfaced to a preamplifier, amplifier and single-channel pulseheight analyzer system, and the two systems are connected to a scaler. A special timing unit controls the transfer of the source and the on and off switching of the detector assembly, in sequence with the movement of the source. Results and Discussion In the experimental demonstration, using the 107 neutron.s-1 source, a 10% uranium ore was measured to ± 10% (2o total error) in 10 cycles and ±6% (2o) in 100 cycles. Since a larger source was not available, it can be statistically predicted that a 109 neutron-s-1 source could be used to measure a 0.1% ore to ± 10% (20) in 10 cycles. The uranium can occur as discrete nonhomogeneous particles in the ore, and the error caused by such a distribution of particles is ± 4% (2o), as determined by

Open-pit mines are constructed in materials characterized by the complete range of geologic materials from the most recent alluvial sediments to hard intact crystalline rock. The determination of stable slopes in recent alluvium is in the realm of soil mechanics, an established engineering discipline, well founded on theoretical development and years of substantiating experience. The analytical tools of the soils engineer are chiefly derived from continuum mechanics wherein load-deformation response is governed by mass properties of the substance. At the other end of the spectrum, slopes in hard unweathered rock can generally be analyzed in a straightforward manner by the methods of discontinuum mechanics wherein the properties and orientations of joints control the response of the material. This approach is exemplified by the classical work of Terzaghi (1962). In between these two extremes is a gray area of material types which are composed of stiff soil and incompetent rock. This area is of importance to the mining engineer, since a large portion of open-pit mines is excavated wholly or in part into incompetent rock. This paper describes an approach to pit slope design in incompetent rock in which the material behaves essentially as a continuum. A wide range of geologic materials from stiff soil to poorly indurated sandstone and shale to crushed or weathered crystalline rock appear to fit in this category. These materials all possess certain mechanical properties which must be accounted for in a realistic assessment of slope stability. These properties include nonlinearity, s tress -dependency, and inelasticity. Further considerations involve residual stresses and time-dependent seepage pressures where groundwa.ter is present.

I. Introduction The experimental work described in this paper was carried out during 1967 and 1968 in an inclined reinforced concrete adit which had been driven during 1965 and 1966 to provide primary access for a new gypsum mine. The new mine was situated near the village of Sherburn-in-Elmet in central Yorkshire in an area of extensive post-glacial plains of deltaic and lacustrine origin. These plains cover a large area of this part of Yorkshire extending inland from the coast for a distance of about 35 miles. The gypsum deposit at Sherburn dates from Permian times and it is considered" to have been associated with the western-most edges of the ancient Zechstein Sea which was also responsible for the formation of the extensive evaporite deposits in north-east Yorkshire. The gypsum deposit, which varies in thickness from 10 to 15 feet, is extremely pure and it occurs quite close to the surface; in the Sherburn area the overburden is only 120 feet thick. The proximity of the deposit to the surface, however, tends to give a somewhat false idea of the magnitude of the problems associated with its extraction. These problems were all related to the nature of the overlying strata. As has already been mentioned, the surface deposits are post-glacial and they consist of an extremely large number of thin layers of varved clays, fine silts and sands extending down to a depth of 75 feet. From the bottom of the post-glacial deposits to the seam, a distance of about 45 feet, the strata consists of a succession of marls, weak sandstones, and siltstones, which although they are inherently incompetent materials, are appreciably stronger

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME's future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME's Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125kt/d (137,700 stpd). The most recent expansion included the installation of a semiautogenous mill (SAG) designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation, including conventional and column cells, and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modern distributed control system. PTFI’s operations are located in the Ertsberg mining district of Irian Jaya’s Jayawijaya Mountains, the eastern-most province of the republic of Indonesia on the Island of New Guinea. PTFI, the operator, is owned by Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the government of Indonesia (9.4%) and private Indonesian investors (9.3%).

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. As a matter of fact, very few centrifugal pumps of any type wire operating against heads in excess of 50 feet, since such applications were considered impractical. In the

The "Gold" chapter of my adventures did not start with a rush. On May 14, 193 1, Thayer Lindsley wired me asking if I could examine the Pioneer mine in British Columbia right away. I replied, "Yes," but I had never heard of the Pioneer and, although many others were asking about gold during the Depression, none were doing anything about it. A little later another wire asked me to meet Gen. A.D. McRae in Vancouver in a couple of days. This was the start of 20 years of intermittent examinations for Lindsley. I took the train to Seattle and the night boat to Vancouver where I met Gen. McRae and his associate Victor Spencer. McRae had been one of the Canadian leaders during World War I and, for his services, he had been made a Canadian senator, a lifetime job. Col. Spencer was proprietor of a big store in Vancouver, and almost as distinguished. A seaplane was waiting for us in the harbor, to be piloted by Major McLaren, one of the leading Canadian flyers during the war. He flew us up the long fjord of Howe Sound and then on north along the route of the provincial-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway past jagged snow-clad peaks to the village of Shalalth on Seton Lake. A rental car run by Curley Evans, a noted British Columbia character, was waiting for us in Shalalth and it took us for 50 miles over one of the steepest and crookedest roads I had ever seen. At the end of the road the Pioneer camp was set in a deep canyon in the Coast Range. Dave Sloan, another British Columbia character, was waiting for us and he immediately took me underground, at nine in the evening, to see the Pioneer ore. The ore body was then a small one but it was running over an ounce of gold per ton. The name Dave Sloan became synonymous with Pioneer. McRae and Spencer told me the history of Sloan arid the Pioneer on the way to the mine. The rich surface ore had first been discovered about 1879. The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

Mina Santa Rosa, in west central Panama, is the first large-scale gold mine in Panama and will soon be the largest single-mine gold producer in central America (Fig. 1). At full production, the mine will process 1.8 Mt/a (2 million stpy) of ore and produce more than 1.8 t/a (60,000 oz/year) of gold and 9.3 t/a(300,000 oz/year) of silver. Mina Santa Rosa is a subsidiary of Greenstone Resources of Toronto, Ontario. Freeport-McMoRan geologists first visited the area in 1985. Their rock chip sampling adjacent to old shafts and adits confirmed widespread gold and trace element geochemistry anomalies. Surface mineralization appeared to be localized in and adjacent to narrow veinlets. However, they recognized astructural setting similar to the Nevada Tertiary volcanic-hosted epithermal gold systems.

The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages.
