The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

Lignin, the second most abundant natural polymer and bi-product of the pulp and paper industry, has been commercially available in a number of forms since 1940. This growing industry is fueled by demand in traditional applications. Reagents that offer unique solutions in various mineral process applications are examples of advanced uses that also fuel growth. These applications include flotation reagents in fluorspar, bastnäsite and potash, as well as in the zinc pressure leach process. Due to the fact that no concerted effort has been made to find applications for modified lignosulfonates, it is quite possible that this natural material will find use in other benefication processes.

The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

Although water quality predictions are often made in Environmental Impact Statements (EIS's) as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), comparisons between predicted and actual water quality conditions are rarely reviewed. A comprehensive review of predicted and actual water quality conditions was conducted for a number of large U.S. hardrock mines with EIS’s. For mines with large differences between predicted and actual conditions, factors responsible for the deviations, such as characterization and modeling errors or engineering failures, were identified. Recommendations are made for how the NEPA process could be modified to better predict water quality at hardrock mine sites.

Introduction Uranium was recovered from mining of collapse breccia pipe deposits in the Arizona Strip district in northwestern Arizona (Figure 1) intermittently between 1956 and 1990, with cumulative production having totaled 23.3 million pounds of U3O8 (8960 tU) at an average grade of 0.6% U3O8. Production was suspended in 1990 because of low uranium prices, but the recent resurgence in market price once again makes the breccia pipe deposits potentially attractive exploration and development targets. This paper describes: (1) formation of the pipe structures and their metallogenesis; (2) mining and milling of breccia ore; and (3) potential roadblocks to development of new breccia pipe mines. Breccia Pipe Formation Formation of the breccia pipes began in cave systems formed during development of karst topography in the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. The karst Redwall surface was eventually covered by up to 900 meters of shallow marine to continental sediments ranging in age from Pennsylvanian to Triassic. The pipes were formed by progressive upward stoping caused by groundwater ascending under hydraulic head along near-vertical faults, joints and fractures. The stoping process involved both chemical disaggregation and mechanical failure of roof and wall rock. Upward stoping of successively younger units allowed for upward propagation of a pipe and resulted in a chimney-like column of breccia between the steep walls of the pipe. Syndepositional thickening of sedimentary units of varying ages indicates that pipe formation began as early as early Pennsylvanian time and continued intermittently through Triassic time.

I have been asked to talk to you this morning about phosphate marketing and distribution. In discussing this I will attempt to answer such questions as: What is phosphate? Where do we get it? What form is it and how do we sell it? How do we distribute it? How is it applied? And last, but not least, What about the future? To start with, phosphate is one of the three primary plant nutrients. It is the element essential for root structure of plants. Plants, like humans, need a balanced diet. Thus, the amount of phosphate required by individual plants is, in part, related to how much of the other nutrients are used. Virtually all soils contain a certain amount of available phosphates. Back at the turn of the century the most common source of additional plant nutrient, including phosphates, was from cattle manure. The use of chemical fertilizers is something that has grown significantly during the last half century, and in particular, the last 20 years.

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the manufactured product. Clearly, the engineer who is responsible for selecting a mode of transport must base his decision, at least in large measure, on economic comparisons. And today, the engineer usually finds that he has to choose between several modes, including slurry pipelines. For the purpose of an initial economic screening, it is not necessary to go deeply into the technical details of a slurry system. What is usually needed, however, is a method with which the engineer can make a quick economic assessment to determine whether a slurry pipeline should be included in the detailed final analysis. This paper presents a rapid method for making such a preliminary appraisal. Experience with commercial slurry pipeline systems in several countries and with a variety of solid materials has shown that if several assumptions pertaining to critical design variables are made, it is possible to roughly estimate the transportation cost of a slurry system on the basis of only three factors: the specific gravity of the solid material, the length of the system, and the quantity of slurry to be pumped each year. It is assumed that conditions pertaining to field construction, corrosion inhibition, and the like, will be favorable. This assumption is critical because any factor which analysis shows to be particularly unfavorable will raise the total transportation cost estimate which this paper establishes. If the engineer employs this estimating procedure and decides that the use of a slurry pipeline is economically unattractive, his chances of being wrong are small. Conversely, if his quick appraisal indicates that the use of a slurry system is economically favorable, the engineer is justified in committing the time and money needed to make a more detailed investigation of the slurry pipeline potential.

"The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

Constructed by stonemasons over 120 years ago, a portion of the Trout Brook Storm Sewer Interceptor (TBI) owned and operated by the Capitol Region Watershed District in Saint Paul, Minnesota, needed rehabilitation. A routine inspection of the 10-foot limestone block tunnel revealed degraded and missing mortar between the blocks, allowing significant infiltration and soil migration through the tunnel joints. Conditions, including damaged and missing blocks, were considerably worse in a 250-foot-long segment beneath a busy mainline railroad corridor. Barr’s solution included tuck-pointing to repair the mortar joints, shotcrete overlay, and construction of a hybrid cast-in-place/shotcrete “tunnel within a tunnel” to support the mainline railroad loads.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is n practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota (a) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (b) topsoil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (c) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (d) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation. Almost half the nation's cool reserves are in the Northern Great Plains underlying several million hectares of agricultural land. Social pressures to return mined land to agriculture or other productive uses have resulted in recent enactment of state and federal legislation, which is intended to restore productivity to disturbed areas. All such legislation relating to the Northern Great Plains has stipulated that useable soil material be saved and returned to mined land after spoils are smoothed. This requirement immediately raises questions as to how much soil material is needed, what criteria are important in defining useable soil material, how is the soil material to be handled in the earth-moving operations involved, and how can replaced soil material be maintained and revegetation. Scientists at the USDA Northern Great Plains Research Center at Mandan, North Dakota have conducted research on the reclamation of disturbed lands since 1970. Initially this research was designed to identify and characterize those physical and chemical properties of spoils that are most restrictive to plant growth (1). Basically, they found that any properties of spoils that reduced the efficiency of storage and utilization of the limited precipitation received adversely affected plant growth. Thus, in the Northern Plains, revegetation of mined land was found to depend upon the management of factors affecting the availability of water to plants - the same as on unmined land. After the major problems in revegetation were identified, technologies were developed to circumvent the effects of the growth-limiting factors (2). Basically two approaches were identified by which plant growth-restricting properties of spoils could be corrected: (a) various amendments (gypsum, sulfur, Fertilizers, mulches, calcium chloride, etc.) could be applied to spoils to improve their ability to conserve precipitation and provide water for plant growth; or (b) undesirable spoils could be covered with suitable soil materials to reduce or alleviate adverse effects. The latter approach appeared to be more feasible in most instances And is the approach specified in current legislation. The remainder of this paper discusses research on the use of roil materials returned to spoils and summarizes the information obtained.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia?s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for over twenty years. Mortality from Coal Workers? Pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in x-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. To understand this disparity, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among United States coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure, and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above observed differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not show any significant differences. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. Assuming that quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of advanced pneumoconiosis in the U.S., more effective dust control measures, as well an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, need to be implemented to prevent this potentially disabling condition.

Daniel has written several articles and has been published in Pit and Quarry, World Tunneling, and American Shotcrete Association magazines. What is Required to Remediate Highwalls There are several techniques available to stabilize highwalls or temporary rock walls to allow for safe mining practices. The following are some of the techniques that can economically be used.

G.F. Learning The paper by R.V. Ramani and R.J. Sweigard is a wonderful description of the labyrinthine web that has been spun about the mining industry by energetic bureaucrats and politicians over the past 50 years. The remedy for the problem, however, is not more of the same, but less. That may be difficult for the industry to achieve, for it is not a technical solution but a political one. And the current fervor for more detailed planning at all levels of government and private enterprise has become deeply ingrained. The authors recommend the provision of more information about mining and mineral resources to "macro" (i.e., government) land use planners. They apparently overlook, however, the already strong tendency on the part of most government land use planners to consider themselves omniscient. Thus, giving them more information about the technical problems of mining will only make them want to get more and more involved in the "micro" (private, site specific) mine development and production plans of the individual mining firm. In fact, this has already happened at all levels of jurisdiction from municipal to federal government. Examples are legion. The most effective way to ameliorate the adverse impacts of government land use planning on existing and potential mining operations is to: (1) introduce greater flexibility in the definition of land use zones by local and state governments; (2) adopt realistic and relevant ambient environmental performance standards in governing relationships between mineral land uses and concurrent or subsequent nonmining land uses; (3) allow greater leeway for economic considerations in land use decisions in contrast to the explicit legalistic approach now in vogue; (4) recognize that all minerals are not the same and that sand and gravel mining should not be treated the same as underground metal mining, coal stripping, oil field production, or in situ leaching; and (5) eliminate the notion that mining operators should be responsible for determining in detail the use of land by subsequent owners of mined land. This last bit of conventional ethic really makes no more sense than requiring the builders of every shopping center or government office complex to provide detailed plans for the use of that land when its use for shopping or government is ended. Did the builder of Ebbetts Field plan for Brooklyn after the Dodgers went to Los Angeles? Should the developer of the Bingham Pit plan for suburban Salt Lake City after the copper mining goes to Chile? The nation's mining industry must address these questions before further bankrupting itself to provide more data to planners and spending thousands of dollars per acre to create land that when reclaimed is worth only a few hundred dollars per acre. Reply by R.V. Ramani and R.J. Sweigard We thank Mr. Leaming for his valuable contribution. His views on the problems of land use planning and mineral resources are most welcome additions to our paper. As the title indicates, our paper was more concerned with the impacts of land use planning on mineral resource conservation than with the details of the planning process. On the whole, his five recommendations would be helpful for mineral resource conservation. However, we would suggest that the argument he presents for his final recommendation does not address the differences between mining as a land use and commercial or institutional uses. We believe that this difference is the crux of the issue. We share Mr. Leaming's desire to ameliorate the adverse impacts of land use planning. Possibly the most detrimental impact is the loss of mineral resources. Any development, whether mineral or community, that does not give proper consideration to other resources can result in permanent loss or sterilization of resources. With proper planning, some of these losses can be avoided. As our paper indicated, one factor that limits the consideration of mineral resources, and ultimately leads to their sterilization, is the generally inadequate levels of resource characterization and understanding of the unique nature of mineral resources and mining operations. The last point raised by Mr. Leaming is also important. In terms of reclamation and land use planning in mining districts, we certainly do not advocate spending more than what the results are worth. The main thrust of the paper was to explore the avenues for conserving the mineral resources so that, at some appropriate time, the issue of mining and reclamation can still be addressed.

1977 was the modern day low point for productivity in the coal industry. At that time, no one could have predicted that the industry was about to enter a productivity rise that would continue unabated through the 1980s. Thirteen years later, the cause of this phenomenon is still not well understood. While many government studies focused on the fall in productivity from 1969 to 1977, none have been undertaken to explain the rise. Some of the likely causes of the gain in productivity during this period will be discussed here. An attempt will also be made to quantify the value of some of the technical innovations that have taken place. The remainder of the gain is assumed to come from non-technical sources. The nature of these sources, although largely non-quantifiable, is also discussed. Since the number of mines that have adopted the technical innovations noted here is largely unknown, the actual contribu¬tion of technological changes to the overall productivity gain can only be estimated.
