From comments and questions concerning the meaning of USNR, and "why is the Navy in the mining business?" I believe it is worth while to establish the background and purpose of our company. We are a stock company formed by the purchase and reorganization of a company known as the U. S. Natural Gas Corporation. In May 1969, a group of investors with Mr. Robert L. Katz as president and chief executive officer, created United States Natural Resources, Inc., to develop and purposively use our Natural Resources in four areas: 1. Mines and Minerals 2. Forest Products 3. oil and Gas 4. Recreational Lands As final proof that we are not a government organization, I simply state. "We pay taxes." The mining division was formed in October 1969, with the completion of the merger of USNR and Vibration Measurement Engineers, Inc., Of Evanston, Illinois. Throughout the industry we were known as "VME," our company supplied consulting service in the field of seismic energy control, mining consulting and. we operated drilling, blasting and, contracting organizations in several areas of the country. Since that time we have developed and acquired producing properties in Quarrying, Coal Mining and Cement Copper Production.

While the Kansas River Tunnel is a relatively short, small diameter tunnel, the shaft excavation methods implemented were long and large on innovation and use of reverse circulation drilling equipment. ATS Drilling, L.P. used mechanical excavation techniques for both soil and rock segments of the 42.7 m (140 feet) and 38.1 m (125 feet) deep shafts that were 2.9 m (9.5 feet) and 4.1m (13.5 feet) diameter, respectively.

Large amounts of limestone fines coproduced during the processing of crushed limestone may be useful in the sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2). Accelerated weathering of limestone (AWL) is proposed as a low-tech method to capture and sequester CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power plants and other point-sources such as cement manufacturing. AWL reactants are readily available, inexpensive, and environmentally benign. Waste CO2 is hydrated with water to produce carbonic acid, which then reacts with and is neutralized by limestone fines, thus converting CO2 gas to dissolved calcium bicarbonate. AWL waste products can be disposed of in the ocean. Feasibility requires access to an inexpensive source of limestone and to seawater, thus limiting AWL facilities within about 10 km of the coastline. The majority of U.S. coastal power generating facilities are within economical transport distance of limestone resources. AWL presents opportunities for collaborative efforts among the crushed stone industry, electrical utilities, cement manufactures, and research scientists.

The copper catalyzed gold oxidation and reduction mechanisms in ammonium thiosulfate solution were investigated by Eh-pH diagram based on the optimum reagent combination for 60 mass% -75 µm silicate ore at 16g/t Au with the maximum gold extraction of 92% and the minimum ammonium thiosulfate consumption of 23 kg/t-ore for 24 hour’s leaching at ambient temperature. The gold recovery by cementation was nearly 100% by Zn and Al powders at Metal/Au mass ratio of 30, and around 95% by Cu powder at Cu/Au+ mass ratio of 50. In order to oxidize the gold efficiently with the less thiosulfate consumption, the stable region of [Cu(NH3)4]2+ should be as wide as possible in the region, where [Cu(S2O3)2]3- was more stable than [Cu(NH3)2]+. In order to reduce gold from the pregnant solution with the less metal powder’s (Zn, Cu, Al) consumption, the stable region of [Cu(S2O3)2]3- should be wider than [Cu(NH3)2]+ on copper precipitation. Zinc powder may recover gold more efficiently than copper powder with the similar trend on the effect of ammonia, copper and thiosulfate. However, the large amount of copper will be co-precipitated along with gold since the stability of zinc ammine and thiosulfate complexes are higher than that of copper’s. Aluminium may reduce gold efficiently at higher thiosulfate concentration and pH. These results were confirmed and compared with the optimum reagent combination for finer grind sample at 100 mass% -75 µm, which is the optimum ore size for the standard cyanidation at 1.0 g/ l NaCN to obtain about 95% gold extraction. The optimum reagent combination was concluded as 0.5 mol/l NH4OH, 0.0001 mol/l CuSO4*5H2O and 0.05 mol/l (NH4)2S2O3 with the result of 94% gold extraction and 3kg/t-ore of ammonium thiosulfate consumption. Gold and copper stabilities were well agreed with the result of coarser grind ore thermodynamically. The lower reagent combination will reduce gold oxidation power, but significantly minimize the reagent consumption. From this pregnant solution, nearly 100% of gold was successfully recovered by zinc precipitation at Zn/Au+ mass ratio of 30. Aluminium and copper precipitations resulted in less than 40% of gold recovery at Metal/Gold mass ratio of 30. The reagent consumption cost on this lower reagent combination followed by zinc precipitation was $1.6/t-ore, while the cyanidation was $3.1/t-ore. Thiosulfate oxidation mechanism indicated the similarity to Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow inby the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

Reducing the number of roof fall injuries is a goal of the NIOSH mine safety research program. Central to this effort is the development of assessment techniques that will help to identify the nature of the risks associated with working under potentially hazardous roof conditions. This paper discusses a method to determine the roof fall risk using a qualitative risk analysis technique. The ability to determine roof fall risk has been a long-standing goal of safety professionals and can provide the kind of information, needed by on-site personnel responsible for worker safety, to mitigate roof fall injuries.

The 23rd annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Tucson Marriott University Park Hotel, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005. The Mining Foundation of the Southwest is a non-profit organization. It educates the public about the mineral industries and reports outstanding accomplishments in the fields of mining and the earth sciences. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Pierre Lassonde, president of Newmont Mining and resident of the World Gold Council. He is one of Canada’s leading gold analysts.

Nuclear power currently produces about 20% of the electricity in the US, with 104 nuclear power plants located in 31 states. The commercial US nuclear industry contributes over $4 billion annually to US workers in salaries and wages. 25,000 new jobs need to be filled in the next 5 years. There are over 30 new power plants under consideration by US utilities. The operating reactors use uranium oxide fuel enriched to about 4% U235 and fission is the process used to generate heat to form steam to drive the turbine generators. Nuclear energy is an important element in the US generation portfolio and represents the largest producer of nearly emission-free electricity. Most, if not all, of the operating plants will secure an extended 20 years of operation or more. The last plant constructed was ordered in 1978. New smaller, modular reactors are under design to provide less expensive, expandable generation options.

"The benthic environmental impact experiment addresses environmental impacts at a specific site related to deep-sea mineral resource development. For such a purpose, since 2010 we have carried out essential environmental research at both the BIS and a preservation site. We have acquired several tens multi- or box core samples at 32 sites within the BIS especially between 2011 and 2013, aiming to examine the basic properties of surficial deep-sea sediment as the potential source for deep-water plumes.In this study, we present physical the properties such as water content, shear strength and also geochemical properties such as major elements, rare earth elements (REEs), heavy metal contents at the BIS. Such proxies vary distinctly according to the Facies association. The lithology of all core sediments in the BIS corresponds to both Association Ib (Unit I/Unit II) and Association IIIb (Unit I/Unit III) on the basis of the KORDI classification (KORDI, 2004); Unit I is watery mud and dark grayish brown (10YR4/2) to dark brown (10YR4/3). Unit II is highly bioturbated mud and brownish yellow (10YR6/6). Unit III is very dark brown (10YR3/2) to black (10YR2/1) mud. Physical properties of these sediment types show that Association Ib is distinct from Association IIIb. The vertical profile of water content changed more sharply in Association IIIb probably due to compaction; water contents varied from 230 to 300% in Association Ib and changed from 200 to 250% in Association IIIb. The vertical profiles of shear strength are also quite different between Associations; the profile curve in Association IIb is much more gentle due to bioturbation."

The New South Ferry Terminal in the New York City Transit system represents an important milestone for the city. This is the first station designed and built in the 21st century. The design of the fire safety system included relying on Computational Fluid Dynamics to analyze the dispersion of heat and smoke, and modelling of people egress to determine the egress requirements. The project also looked into how to protect the structure from the heat exposure in order to meet the fire rating requirements. This paper provides an overview of the fire safety design approach taken to design the new South Ferry Terminal station in lower Manhattan and looks into fire modelling, structural fire protection, and station evacuation.

Freeport Exploration initiated regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia in 1990 (see figure 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work which totaled 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) and was subsequently awarded additional?concessions which added 1 million hectares (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments Freeport?s current land position totals l. 9 million hectares (4.7 million acres).

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, Nevada began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corporation (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 meters (1,000 feet) to make room for the next phase of open pit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17 meter (56 feet) high Mechanically Stabilized Embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, Colorado. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design, and construction of the MSE wall.

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

The Powder River Basin (PRB) of northeastern Wyoming and south-central Montana is the largest strippable reserve of compliant coal (0.6 or less lb of sulfur per million Btu) in the United States. In mining parlance, it is the Mother Lode! Wyoming’s portion of the Basin provides one fifth of the coal produced in the United States annually, and the state has been the nation’s top coal producer for the past six years. Based on 1993 production statistics and estimated strippable compliance coal reserves, Wyoming may remain the nation’s top producer for the next 76 plus years. Past articles on the PRB have focused mainly on production. After living and working in the Basin for the past five years, I have developed an appreciation for the area and its major industry that transcends size and production data. In the fall of 1993, MINING ENGINEERING’s publisher and I decided to present a series of articles that would cover many other aspects of the Basin. Ten topics were outlined, and specific individuals, selected for their knowledge and experience, were asked to contribute articles about their specialties. Although Montana has four large mines producing coal from the PRB, this series of articles will concentrate on the Wyoming portion of the Basin.

Mining is an industry of experimentation throughout human history. Recently, societies are giving a clear message about mining because many projects are being rejected around the world. These refusals are a generational reaction to the activity of mining. In practice, it generates the perception that mining is using the same methodology without attending to the gradual initiation of conflicts. This is in spite of the best engineering and technology of the time that are put in place at the presentation of those mining projects. Some of these rejected projects are geographically distant from each other, but the communities? rejection occurred during many cases under similar characteristics. This concern shows that the current model of mining projects needs to be replaced with a new one: A new Design, one within which the socio-environmental values of this millennium are inherent. This paper describes Mining Project 101 to help the industry to set the highest and cleanest standards for mining. It also presents its aspects to sustainability and nature, which provides the principles and procedures for designing, planning, and operating mining projects with sensitivity to nature. It offers methods of diagnostic, remediation, and extraction while at the same time preventing and preserving a physical, chemical, and biological equilibrium of nature. This emerging process will be a step up from having a mining industry unaccountable to the socio-environmental conflicts it perpetrates and will abandon the ?cosmetic? repair on the caducity of traditional models in today?s practice. This coal basin is a fore-deep basin with a lot of similarities with the Appalachian basin in the U.S.A., where throughout the 1990s, the research in coalbed methane grew rapidly due to a combination of factors, including the high prices for gas and electricity. In the Asturian Central Coal Basin 129 coal beds with thickness ranging from 0.8 to 1.5 m have been recognised in the productive carboniferous in an area bigger than 1500 km2. The maturation grade of these coals varies from the external zones of the basin where the volatile content ranges from 35%-40% to 20%-30%, to the internal zones of the basin where the volatile content ranges from 20% to 10%. In this context a sustainable exploration for fossil fuel is currently being undertaken in the most favourable areas of the basin in order to evaluate the real possibilities for coalbed methane (CBM) resources.

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

Mineral liberation data are routinely obtained for a wide variety of applications, including ore characterization and characterization of various metallurgical test products obtained in bench-scale laboratory testwork. Newmont Mining Corporation owns several properties in the Carlin Trend containing refractory gold ores. These ores are generally difficult to treat and have to undergo several processing stages for gold recovery. At Carlin?s Mill 5 operation, flotation is used to pre-concentrate some of these difficult ores to produce a sulfide concentrate to feed the roaster. It is of interest from a flotation perspective to be able to study the floatability of pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, since these minerals all have different quantities of gold associated with them, and have to be recovered to ensure a successful separation has been achieved. In this paper, a detailed MLA study on several Carlin ores was undertaken on samples from flotation tests, using air or nitrogen as flotation gas, specifically to study the differences in floatability characteristics, which ultimately impacts overall gold recovery. Limestone-based technology for arsenic removal from water is an innovative and promising method. The technology offers the potential for low-cost disposal of a stable waste product after arsenic removal, either in an ordinary landfill or by encapsulation in concrete. Leaching research described in this paper shows that the limestone waste, after encapsulation in concrete, passes the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Leaching was less than 0.05 mg/L, which is 1/100 of the U.S. EPA?s standard for disposal of arsenic in a landfill. Disposal of arsenic-enriched waste is critical for commercial viability of arsenic-removal technologies. Low-cost disposal gives the limestone-based method an advantage that could help communities meet the new maximum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion for arsenic in drinking water. The ability to recycle the waste material in concrete could add a significant economic benefit, further reducing overall costs.

O2, NaCl03, H202, NaOCI and Ce+4 have been examined as oxidants in an alkaline carbonate system for uranium in situ leaching. The South Texas and New Mexico ores contained up to 2.6 meq/g of reducing compounds that consume oxidants in the leaching operation. Leaching rates did not increase linearly with the oxidation potential of the oxidants. A mild oxidant can be used to maximize uranium oxidation selectivity and oxidant efficiency. 02 can oxidize most of the uranium mineral with an adequate rate and high oxidant efficiency.
