Bright-orange couplings adorning piping systems are a common sight in just about every underground mine in North America. Grooved mechanical piping, the pipe-joining system that utilizes these couplings, is the preferred method for joining underground and plant piping systems in the mining industry, due to the ease and speed of installation and maintenance. However, the applications for such systems have traditionally excluded high-pressure systems. Most grooved mechanical couplings have a moderate working-pressure limitation, so high-pressure systems have required the use of alternative joining methods, typically heavy-duty flanges. However, the introduction of high-pressure couplings (up to 4,000 psi) has made the grooved joining method viable, and even preferable, for backfill, deep-mine chilled water and dewatering lines and other high-pressure piping applications. As engineers explore the use of high-pressure couplings, questions will undoubtedly arise about the joining method?s capabilities. This article will address the capabilities and specifications of high-pressure couplings, and compare flanged and grooved mechanical pipe joining in traditional as well as high-pressure underground mining applications.

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently developed a series of validated models utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the effects of air-blocking shelves on airflows and respirable dust distribution associated with mediumsized surface blasthole drill shrouds as part of a dry dust collector system. Using validated CFD models, three different air-blocking shelves were included in the present study: a 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide shelf; a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf; and a 7.6-cm (3-in.)-wide shelf at four different shelf heights. In addition, the dust-collector-to-bailing airflow ratios of 1.75:1, 1.5:1, 1.25:1 and 1:1 were evaluated for the 15.2-cm (6-in.)-wide air-blocking shelf. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models. The effects of air-blocking shelves and dust collector-to-bailing airflow ratios were identified by the study, and problem regions were revealed under certain conditions. IntroductionSurface blasthole drilling can generate considerable amounts of respirable silica dust. These high dust concentrations can be exacerbated by the high silica content as drilling cuts through silica-bearing materials such as sandstone and shale, causing overexposures for miners to respirable silica dust. These overexposures can lead to silicosis, an occupational lung disease that has no cure and is often fatal. A review of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) respirable silica dust sample database from 2010 to 2016 for metal/nonmetal mining shows the following overexposure rates for occupations related to blasthole drilling: • 14.1 percent of rotary air drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (22 out of 156 samples).• 5.8 percent of rotary drillers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (nine out of 155 samples).• 7.3 percent of drill helpers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 41 samples).• 7.5 percent of blasters/shotfirers were overexposed to respirable silica dust (three out of 40 samples)."

The Stillwater District is located in south central Montana approximately 75 miles southwest of Billings, the state's largest city. It lies along the northeast front of the Beartooth Mountains and is within the boundaries of the Custer and Gelatin National Forests. The district contains some of the nation's most spectacular mountain scenery. Montana's highest peaks, including 12,799 foot Granite Peak, rise a few miles south of the area. Much of the district is located on a gently undulating plateau which averages 8500 ft. above sea level, broken by hills up to 10,000 feet and slashed by glacially carved canyons, some of which are more than 3,000 feet deep.(Fig. 1) Immediately to the north and east, the land falls away to the Great Plains, stretching unbroken to the Mississippi River. Two major tributaries of the Yellowstone River, the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers, traverse the area and several large streams originate in the district itself. Access to the high mountain country and the adjoining Beartooth Primitive Area is restricted to a few horse and jeep trails continuing from the terminus of improved roads in the bottom of the Stillwater and Boulder Valleys. Hunters, fishermen and cabin owners make intensive use of the area along its improved transportation routes, but hikers seldom venture more than three miles beyond the end of the roads. People from the Billings area are the most frequent visitors.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? As the number of prime surface coal mining sites diminishes with time and with the potential for increased coal demand, areas that were previously not mined because of their difficult mining conditions, marginal economics, and controversial environmental nature, will have to be considered if surface coal mining is to continue in the future. Such sites include areas near major rivers, streams, and lakes. The name most commonly given to these areas by regulatory agencies is "wetlands". The exact definition(s) to the term "wetland" will be discussed later in this paper. Most coal operators are now more than familiar with permitting requirements under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). The SMCRA permanent regulatory program recognizes the fact that coal mining operations will periodically encounter streams, wetlands, etc. Although discussed in various sections of the permanent program regulations, the relationship of coal mining operations to wetlands is particularly evident in the performance standards regarding hydrologic balance and protection of fish, wildlife and related environmental values.

When deciding to deploy rescue teams underground the decision makers need to be able to determine that there won?t be an explosion whilst the rescue teams are underground. Previously general body concentrations in areas likely to be travelled were compared to explosive limits on a one off basis with no formal process looking at trends or other areas. A new approach is being adopted that takes into account the rate of change of gas concentrations with triggers set to enable a withdrawal of personnel prior to a possible explosion and influences such a barometric pressure changes. This paper explains the rationale behind the changes made and the advantages and implications of adopting such an approach.

DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.

"Komatsu has been on the cutting edge of autonomous mining for the past 30 years and the company remains at the forefront of the technology that is changing from concept to a full-fledged reality.In 1996, Komatsu America Corp. (KAC) purchased a controlling interest in Modular Mining Systems; a move that enabled both companies to expand their product lines. It was through this effort that Modular helped to deploy the first autonomous haulage system (AHS) — the Komatsu FrontRunner system. In January 2008, the first commercial implementation of the FrontRunner system occurred at Codelco’s copper mine in Chile. Since then, Komatsu has put more than 130 haul trucks into seven sites on three continents to haul copper, iron ore and oil sands and its equipment has moved 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) of material with zero lost time incidents attributed to Komatsu’s autonomous trucks. The 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) is the most of any commercial mining autonomous haulage system and there is more to come. In November, Komatsu announced that an additional 150 autonomous haul trucks will be deployed to the Canadian oil sands over the next seven years.Komatsu has continued to pioneer autonomous haulage development, creating a range of autonomous options that includes semiautonomous and teleremote options all the way up to a haulage vehicle that stole the show at the world’s largest mining equipment trade show.In 2016, Komatsu advanced the concept of driverless haul truck to a new level when it displayed its Innovative Autonomous Haulage Vehicle (IAHV) at MINExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The concept vehicle is the first mega class haul truck designed to be fully autonomous, without an operators’ cab included on the vehicle.Unlike other haul trucks, the vehicle was developed exclusively as an unmanned vehicle designed to maximize the advantages of unmanned operation. Among other advancements, it was designed to distribute equal load to the four wheels, both when the vehicle is loaded and unloaded, and adopt four-wheel drive, retarder and steering. Komatsu said it is aiming for high-performance shuttling of this vehicle in both forward and reverse travel directions, thereby eliminating the need for K-turns at loading and unloading sites."

In September of 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) published final regulations that effect owners and operators of underground storage tanks (USTs). These regulation include stringent technical requirements for owners and operators of USTs containing petroleum and certain hazardous substances. The technical requirements effect both new (those installed after December 1988) and existing USTs and include notification; performance and operating standards; release detection, reporting, investigation; release response and corrective action; and closure requirements for out-of-service USTs. The USEPA also published final regulations regarding financial responsibility requirements for owners or operators of petroleum USTs in October of 1988. These regulations require owners or operators of petroleum USTs to demonstrate financial responsibility for the costs of corrective action and compensating third parties for bodily injury or property damage caused by releases from petroleum USTs. Like thousands of other industries, the mining industry must become thoroughly familiar with these new regulations in order to properly manage their UST systems, ensure compliance, and understand other ramifications imposed by these regulations.

Due to the ongoing restructuring of the mining industry in central Europe with a continuous decline of the number of large underground mines and collieries, and a simultaneous decline of staff numbers in the remaining mines, the established mine rescue schemes are endangered to collapse. With the end of the mine rehabilitation at Wismut Uranium in 2014, the last remaining major mine rescue teams in Saxony, providing basic mine rescue services for all other mines in the region, will disappear. This will leave a large number of small mines and other underground operations without capable mine rescue support. Since none of these companies is able to set up a complete mines rescue unit on its own, new ways have to be found. Among others, a central mine rescue team for central Germany as well as the assistance by special trained professional fire fighters or mine rescue teams from abroad are discussed. Problems like location of the central rescue team, financing, communication and transport have to be solved. This paper provides an overview over the complexity of the problem as an example for other mining regions worldwide and will discuss national and cross-national strategies.

Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . Coal Processing Consultants is a Partnership between the National Coal Board and Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. of Britain and has been established in order to provide technical advice and economic evaluations on all aspects of coal processing and utilization. "Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, capable of collecting and retrieving water samples from pit lakes, tailings ponds and other mine water basins will revolutionize environmental programs by lowering sampling costs and reducing safety related risks. Costs typically include a boat and associated equipment, boat transportation, road maintenance, water safety devices, water safety training, and additional staff. Typically, the total cost can exceed $20,000 USD per sampling event (excluding lab analyses). Hazards include potential for drowning, unstable pit walls, and unconsolidated sediment surrounding tailings ponds. Hatch has developed a novel device for aerial drones which currently enables the collection of water samples from depths up to 390 ft (119 m). This system only requires a pilot, a sample technician, and a safe operations point overlooking the water body. Hatch anticipates this will reduce monitoring cost by at least 50% while improving safety, reducing staffing requirements and accelerating data acquisition. This manuscript demonstrates profiling and sample collection from a 95 ft (29 m) deep reservoir and a 377 ft (115 m) deep pit lake, and highlights the potential of this emerging technology. INTRODUCTION Working on or near water at active, closed, or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at US metal, non-metal, and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Open pit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including drowning, hypothermia, falls to the ground from the top of high walls, and rock avalanches resulting from steep, unstable pit walls. Some pit lakes are simply not easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on at least an annual basis is required to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, to verify the accuracy of numerical predictions, and to manage lake water chemistry in order to produce “treatable” influent to water treatment plants, and ultimately, produce acceptable site discharge water quality. As a product of these risks and the need for water sample, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring. This includes training personnel for “on water” duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices, and mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface, employing spotters with direct communication to emergency medical services to watch sampling activities (because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls), and utilizing redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires pit lake water samplers to hold Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel, and uses three boats for water sampling: two on the water at all times, and one on the shoreline, ready to deploy. The costs of these safety mechanisms greatly adds to the overall expense associated with pit lake sampling. Consequently, environmental programs may need to reduce the frequency of pit lake sampling in order to keep monitoring programs within an acceptable budget"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) established on August 15, 1983, a Generic Mineral f Technology Center (GTC) for Respirable Dust within the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WW) in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Minnesota (UMN). The primary goal of the Center is to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease through researching and advancing the fundamental under- standing of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs. Other Center activities include the training of engineers and scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students through their respective institutions, and the technology transfer to the industry. The Center also serves as the reference center for publications in the respirable dust area.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No.4 mine which requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place, High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 it) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610 m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 30.5 cm (12 in) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas which endanger men and equipment. To control this situation rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works towards the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition utilizing a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDFI- 15 bolting machine. Over 120 km (75 mi) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43 to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam port- ions of No.4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method employing bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people and the total drilling supply costs are approximately 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) in Leadville, CO will induct the class of 2011 on Sept. 10, 2011. Representing the coal, metallurgical/processing, research and development, marble and lead industries, this year?s inductees cover a diverse crosssection of the mining industry. William Francis Diamond, Wayne Hazen, Redfield Proctor and Jeffrey Zelms will join 210 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. The members of this year?s class were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Diamond had an illustrious engineering and managerial career that spanned four decades with Island Creek Coal Co. During that time, he was responsible for the engineering and construction of the deepest coal mines producing in North America at the time.

Malthus, an eighteenth century economist, predicted a rather dismal future for the world. It was his contention food supplies would not be sufficient for the population of the world because the economy of a nation grew arithmetically while population increased geometrically. As a consequence, within a relatively few years mass famine would spread throughout the world. This prophecy, based on an agrarian economic situation, did not come true at least insofar as the Western World was concerned. In largo measure, the salvation of our part of the earth resulted from the growth engendered by the Industrial Revolution. Throughout much of today's world, however, the Malthusian theory seems to be coming true. The advantages and benefits of the Industrial Revolution have net reached all nations. Further, the situation has been compounded by the benefits of modern medicine. This has reduced child mortality and extended life expectancy, but placed no limitations on births in the developed countries, child mortality has declined to 2 percent and adult life expectancy has doubled, but education and general prosperity have resulted in voluntary limitations on pregnancies thus partly offsetting the increased chance of survivals Even so, the present rate of population increase in Europe is approximately 6 percent per decade, and somewhat higher in the U.S., Japan, and other developed countries. The world as a whole, however, is expected to double its population by the year 2000, This would imply a rate of increase in the less developed countries approximately four times that in Europe.
