The 30th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Gregory H. Boyce will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Boyce, chairman and chief executive office of Peabody Energy, is being honored for his leadership in the coal industry.

The steepness of the slopes of an open pit mine has a substantial influence on the financial return of the mine. The paper proposes a novel design methodology where overall steeper pitwalls are employed without compromising the safety of the mine. In current design practice, pitwall profiles are often planar in cross-section within each rock layer; i.e., the profile inclination across each layer tends to be constant. Here instead, a new geotechnical software, OptimalSlope, is employed to determine optimal pitwall profiles of depth varying inclination. OptimalSlope seeks the solution of a mathematical optimization problem where the overall steepness of the pitwall, from crest to toe, is maximized for an assigned lithology, geotechnical properties, and factor of safety (FoS). Bench geometries (bench height, face inclination, minimum berm width) are imposed in the optimization as constraints which bind the maximum local inclination of the sought optimal profile together with any other constraints such as geological discontinuities that may influence slope failure. The obtained optimal profiles are always steeper than their planar counterparts (i.e., the planar profiles exhibiting the same FoS) up to 8° depending on rock type and severity of constraints on local inclinations. The design of a copper mine is first carried out employing planar pitwalls, secondly adopting the optimal pitwall profiles determined by OptimalSlope. The adoption of optimal slope profiles leads to a 34% higher net present value and reductions of carbon footprint and energy consumption of 0.17 Mt CO2 eq and 82.5 million MJ respectively due to a 15% reduction of rockwaste volume.

Environmental impacts from acidic mine drainage are growing national concerns that are particularly acute in the headwaters of the Rocky Mountain region. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, approximately one thousand mines are inactive or abandoned, most of them in the headwaters of major drainages. This paper examines the Bear Butte Creek basin, a heavily mineralized watershed with significant historical mining impacts and a surface gold mine permitted in 1997. The watershed loses its surface discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone. The integrity of the aquatic ecosystem was monitored with a suite of site-specific bio-indicators. Stream surveys covered the entire reach of Bear Butte Creek from near its headwaters to the swallow holes in the Madison aquifer. Data from the stream surveys, water-quality sampling, and bio-indicator surveys clearly showed that water-quality impacts are limited mainly to Strawberry Creek and to the area of Bear Butte Creek near and downstream of the town of Galena.

"The Lower and Middle River Des Peres (LMRDP) CSO Storage Tunnel is the largest single component of Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) CSO control system improvements planned to meet consent decree requirements for MSD’s Lemay Service Area. The 13.7-km (8.5-mile) long, deep, hard rock tunnel will have a finished diameter of 9.1 m (30 ft). Beginning at the Lemay Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the alignment follows the channelized River Des Peres to the outfall of the existing Forest Park tubes, as indicated in Fig. 1.The project includes three construction shafts, 34 intakes and a deep, cavern-style pump station located adjacent to the WWTP. The tunnel will be driven from the Defense Mapping shaft to the Macklind shaft. Another shaft is located near the midpoint at the tunnel in River Des Peres Park.The Forest Park intake, located at the upstream end of the tunnel just beyond the Macklind shaft, is a large, tangential vortex intake structure. With a peak flow rate of 170 m3/s (6,000 cfs), it will have a 6.1-m (20-ft) diameter dropshaft to transfer flow into the tunnel.The project includes another three large tangential vortex-flow intake structures with peak flow rates ranging from 28 to 44.5 m3/s (990 to 1,570 cfs). These large intakes are located at points where three large sewers (formerly creeks) enter the River Des Peres. Dropshaft diameters for these intakes range from 3 to 3.7 m (10 to 12 ft) in diameter. The 30 remaining intakes are smaller tangential vortex-style, with dropshafts in the range of 0.8 to 1.7 m (30 to 66 in.) in diameter.Each intake structure drops flow into a deaeration chamber constructed adjacent to the tunnel at tunnel depth. Intake tunnels transfer flow from the deaeration chambers to the main tunnel. Most of the intake tunnels are short. However, two are long. The Glaise Creek tunnel will extend 762 m (2,500 ft) from the main tunnel to the Alaska Park intake, while the Rock Creek tunnel will extend 823 m (2,700 ft) from the main tunnel to the Rock Creek intake. The dewatering pump station, located at the downstream end of the tunnel, will be built inside a large, horseshoe-shaped cavern with two access shafts. Excavation of the cavern and its access shafts will be performed by the tunnel contractor. Build-out of the dewatering pump station will be performed under separate contract."

Floor heave events in underground mining often happen suddenly and cause risk to workers and equipment. Reducing the risk of floor heave must be addressed in mining layout design. To improve that design one must understand the significant parameters that are correlated to the occurrence of floor heave. To accomplish that goal, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) completed a numerical study using FLAC3D, taking advantage of its strain softening and ubiquitous joint capabilities to better simulate the floor heave and caving mechanisms involved at an actual mine site.

Barrier pillars in underground coal mines could eventually be subjected to a hydraulic pressure head due to the build-up of mine water in the old workings. The pressure head could not only act as a force to destabilize the pillar but also cause seepage flow through the pillar and its surrounding strata. Excessive seepage flow could induce piping failure that in turn could accelerate the mechanical failure process of the barrier pillars. In this paper, finite element simulation approach has been employed in the evaluation of the barrier pillars. Both the stress distribution and the seepage flow pattern in and around a barrier pillar have been simulated numerically. The effects of ground stress on rock permeability to water seepage has been taken into consideration in these simulations.

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one's bias and I suspect that my contractor's outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

"Seamount cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (hereafter crusts) are authigenic iron/manganese hydroxide/oxide deposits formed from direct precipitation of minerals from seawater onto a hard substrates surface. Crusts contain significant concentrations of cobalt, manganese, nickel, copper, platinum, rare earth elements and other valuable metallic elements, with potential economic value. Regulations on Prospecting and Exploration for Cobalt-rich Ferromanganese Crusts in the "Area" was approved by the Council and Assembly of the International Seabed Authority in July 2012, China and Japan became the first to obtain exploration contracts, which were signed respectively in April and January 2014.The crusts form pavements and are mainly attached tightly to the surface of the substrate, and less commonly crusts coat talus debris located on the surface of sediment and substrate rock. During prospecting, crust sampling methods mainly include dredge, TVgrab and sub-bottom coring system. During exploration, the sub-bottom coring will be the dominant method for crust sampling, and if necessary, ROV sampling will be used. Usually the samples collected by different methods provide a larger quantity than samples needed for chemical analysis, but sampling quantity is a question that should be considered for mineral resource evaluation that how to ensure that the sampling is representation for the sampling station. Using the samples collected by China from Pacific seamounts, according to the designed analysis flow and Qeqott formula (Q=Kd2), the minimum reliable assay sample quantity ("MRASQ") of crusts for Mn, Co, and Ni are obtained. In the case of the sample homogeneous fines at ~100 mesh size (~0.15 mm), MRASQ for Mn, Co, Ni is respectively 4.5 g, 9 g and 9 g. This result provides the basic data for crusts resources evaluation."

Improving the accuracy of the performance prediction models for hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is important in estimation of the schedule and cost of tunnelling in related projects. The effects of rock mass on performance of TBMs has been studied extensively, yet due to the complex nature of the process, impact of many parameters influencing machine advance rate are not very clear and there is still room for improvements. More accurate estimates can be obtained by better understanding of operating parameters in various geological conditions and can lead to matching machine specifications with job conditions, optimizing machine performance, and avoiding long delays and downtime for increased productivity. This paper will offer review of two case histories including Queens Water tunnel in New York and KCRC project in Hong Kong. The analysis of the available field data, including the geological back mapping and results of laboratory testing of rock mechanical properties, machine operational parameters and achieved rate of penetration will be presented. This includes statistical analysis of available field data to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on performance of hard rock TBMs as well as related formulas to improve performance estimates.

The abstract highlights the increasing use of mobile equipment in mining and its contribution to accidents. The research analyzes injury narratives from Ghanaian surface gold mines to understand the involvement of mobile mining equipment in injuries and explore the use of injury narrative data as a human factors tool. The study identified priority human factor issues, such as operating mobile mining equipment, part removal/installation, and the operator's cabin. The use of Sankey diagrams for multivariable analysis effectively identified specific operator-centered issues that warrant further investigation for improved safety interventions.

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980?s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada mines, processes and ships crude iron ore, concentrate and pellets from the rich ore bodies of the Labrador Trough area in the extreme north-eastern part of Canada, some five hundred miles from Montreal (see figure 1). There are three main sites of activity. At Schefferville, approximately 12 million tons a year of crude ore (chiefly limonite) are mined, crushed, screened and shipped to Sept-Iles. At Labrador City, 40 million tons of specular hematite are mined annually for processing into 17 million tons of concentrate. Of this, 9 million tons are converted into pellets. All product 1s shipped to Sept-Iles. At Sept-Iles, on the north coast of the St. Lawrence, a six million ton per year concentrator and pellet plant process much of the Scheffervllle ore into high-grade pellets. Also at Sept-Iles are the company's administration offices stockpiles and shipping facilities. The Terminal facilities can berth and load a 250,000 ton bulk carrier at 19,000 tons per hour.

The Summitville Au-Ag-Cu district in the southeastern part of the San Juan volcanic field has been a major gold producer in Colorado. Mineralization is hosted by the composite South Mountain quartz latite porphyry volcanic dome, which is believed to have been localized by the intersection of the northwest margin of the Platoro-Summitville caldera complex and the northwest-trending Platoro fracture zone. K-Ar age dates indicate that alteration and mineralization were nearly contemporaneous with emplacement of the dome at 23-20 m.y. ago, 6-7 m.y. after collapse of the Platoroo-Summitville caldera complex. The dome consists of at least four major phases including strongly altered quartz latite porphyry; a late-mineral, coarse-grained sanidine quartz latite porphyry; and postmineral quartz latite dikes. The dome was emplaced into intracaldera rhyodacite and andesite. Gold-silver-copper mineralization is concentrated near the top of the dome and is associated with pods, pipes and steeply dipping tabular zones of silicification and advanced argillic alteration. Alteration is zoned outwards from the center of mineralization through argillically and propylitically altered rocks, and is largely confined to the area of the dome. Trace element geochemical patterns for the deposit indicate a central zone of anomalous As-Au-Pb-Ag and low Mn within an exterior zone of anomalous Ag-Au-Pb-Hg and high Mn. The chief ore mineral is native gold which is associated with goethitic iron oxide in the oxide zone. In the sulfide zone, native gold is associated with copper sulfide-sulfosalt mineralization. A genetic model for the Summitville deposit is based on recent models of modern geothermal systems, with which it shows similarities in alteration, ore mineralogy, zoning, and structural patterns.

St. Joe Minerals Corp., a subsidiary of Fluor Corp., treats high-grade gold, silver, and copper ore at its El Indio plant at an altitude of 4 km in the Chilean Andes. The ore is complex, being a mixture of massive pyrite-enargite and quartz, both containing very fine gold and silver. Treatment produces a copper flotation concentrate containing high levels of gold, silver, and arsenic, and also dore bullion. Part of the flotation concentrate is roasted to remove the arsenic content, and arsenic trioxide is collected as a by-product.

Deepwater discharges of sulfide flotation tailings have been practiced for several decades. Oxygen penetration and organic matter content in such environments are the two major factors that determine their reduction-oxidation condition and hence the rate of sulfide mineral dissolution under such discharge environments. In this study, the effects of solution redox potential and pH on the dissolution of some heavy metals from sulfide flotation tailings were examined. Zn, Pb and Cu concentrations in solution were all higher at a higher redox potential and lower pH. Dissolved Zn concentrations reached 100 ppm even at a low redox potential of 105 mV and near neutral pH after 33 days. Pb concentrations were below 2 ppm at 105 mV and near neutral pH after 165 days. At 105 mV, the Cu concentrations were below 0.2 ppm at near neutral pH after 165 days. At pH 2.3, the Fe concentrations were higher at 420 mV than at 105 mV. But at pH 6.8, the Fe concentrations were lower at 420 mV than at 105 mV, due to the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and the subsequent precipitation of ferric hydroxide. Arsenic concentrations in solution were all less than 0.002 ppm. For Zn, Cu and Fe, no significant differences were observed between the tests in solutions prepared using seawater and those using distilled water. However, Pb concentrations reached higher levels in solutions prepared using seawater.

The status of processes under development is briefly reviewed.

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

The failure of a seal in an underground coal mine can have devastating consequences. Traditionally seals have been constructed as flat walls. Large hydraulic dams, on the other hand, are constructed as concave arches. This paper presents an initial analysis of the potential strengthening of seals by concave construction as well as the impact of additional cost in terms of labor and material. A simple finite element analysis of three-dimensional solids under uniform loading allows comparisons between the strength of a flat wall and a curved arch. The models are examined for reasonable behavior and displacements at 20, 50, 100, and 200 psi loads.
