Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well-known and establishedprocess. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually a relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: SX-1?standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6?8 g/lCu and 50 g/lH2SO4. SX-N?Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to10 g/l. SX-2?Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100?150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility at Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX2, 2?3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with alamine-based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 and SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E2S for SX 2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

"The robust nature of alumina refractory materials presents opportunities for their in-process reclaiming and re-use in non-critical applications. Virgin refractories can be substituted with different quantities of reclaimed materials without compromising the quality of the refractory products. In this study, the effect of reclaimed bauxite on andalusite-containing refractory castables for tundish applications was investigated. The recycled bauxite was formulated in different proportions to replace virgin andalusite in the castables. Standard tests were conducted to evaluate the physical, physicochemical, and thermochemical properties of the formulated products. Static corrosion tests were conducted using tundish slag in order to simulate the actual operating conditions. The results show that the standard flow behaviour, open porosity, and bulk density of samples containing up to 22 mass% reclaimed bauxite were comparable to those of the reference castable. However, high-temperature properties such as static corrosion at 1400°C and hot modulus of rupture at 1500°C indicated that there is an upper constraint to the amount of substitution. The study demonstrated direct potential savings of up to 10% when the reclaimed alumina replacement ratio was increased to 22 mass%. IntroductionAlumina-based refractories can be classified into low-alumina, containing less than 50% Al2O3, and high-alumina or bauxite, containing between 50 and 90% Al2O3. High-alumina refractories have widespread applications in high-temperature metal extraction processes due to their outstanding thermochemical and thermomechanical properties and stability (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Frulli, 2016). The typical chemical composition of refractory-grade bauxite consists of 85–90 wt.% Al2O3, 5–10 wt.% SiO2, 1–2wt.% Fe2O3, 3–4 wt.% TiO2, 0.4–0.8 wt.% CaO + MgO, and 0.20–0.8 wt.% K2O + Na2O (Nyoka et al., 2013). The thermochemical and thermomechanical properties of bauxite-based refractories rely principally on the conversion of the contained silica and alumina to the highly stable corundum (?-Al2O3) and mullite (3Al2O3· 2SiO2) phases (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Hill and Sehnke, 2006; Garbers-Craig, 2008; Frulli, 2016)."

"SynopsisCommencement of the next phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is a year or so away from becoming reality. Some 50 km of tunnels in the form of access adits, shafts, diversion tunnels, and main waterways will be constructed. Sprayed concrete will form an integral part of the temporary and permanent rock support systems that will be installed. Furthermore, the use of sprayed concrete as a final tunnel lining solution was proposed as a viable alternative to concrete linings in the feasibility studies that preceded the forthcoming implementation phase.The aim of this paper is to make the reader aware of all the sprayed concrete related issues that engineers tend to grapple with during the design and construction of tunnel projects and other underground works. Primarily, these issues would include selection of applicable design parameters, technical specifications, construction application methods, quality control and, most importantly in the context of final or permanent linings, the durability of sprayed concrete.The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group (WG) 12 has been tasked specifically to publish a set of recommendations on the Quality and Control of the Application of Sprayed Concrete and the Testing of Sprayed Concrete for Durability. These tasks were also further explored at the recent World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2015) that was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia at the end of May 2015.IntroductionSprayed concrete is presented in a variety of shapes, designs, forms, application methods and accompanying terminologies including shotcrete, gunite, pneumatically applied concrete, and the like. The International Tunnelling Association (ITA) decided to standardize on a single terminology, namely ‘sprayed concrete’, in order to simplify specification, interpretation of guidelines, and codes of practice."

Iron ore pellets are a preferred feedstock for ironmaking. One method used for pelletizing is the grate-kiln process, first established in 1960.During the past decade, the establishment of new grate-kiln plants has increased rapidly, especially in China, and new constructors of pellet plants have started to operate in the market. It is well known that the grate-kiln method yields a superior and more consistent pellet quality compared with the straight-grate process. However, certain issues exist with the grate-kiln plant, which are discussed here, together with proposed practical solutions.

Several methods exist by which the capacity of a dense media separation (DMS) plant can be improved: 1) Increase the feed rate in spite of efficiency 2) Replace with bigger equipment 3) Add whole new module 4) Replace total plant 5) Change over to four shift/ seven days per week roster 6) Replace with alternative process 7) Increase the availability and utilization Options 1 ? 6 have varying degrees of cost implications. The seventh option would seem to be the easiest. Normally it is also the function of the plant operating and maintenance team to maximize this. Usually higher operating and maintenance cost are associated with an increase in these parameters. A general principle that is applicable to plants and systems is that as the complexity increases, the total availability decreases. By simplifying the flow line it may be possible to reduce cost while at the same time increase the availability and utilization. The typical standard DMS flow line contains components that compensate for the variance in pump performance or for the inefficient recovery of ferrosilicon with additional equipment. Things have changed though: 1) Advanced electronic control and monitoring is possible 2) More efficient magnetic separators are available 3) New more user friendly densifiers are available ORIGINAL FLOW LINE In principle the process consists of four flow lines or streams 1) Ore flow ? the feed is divided into a waste and product stream by means of the separating vessel

Spontaneous combustion of coal has been studied by laboratory techniques using an apparatus in a small-scale laboratory testing. Coal?s inherent characteristics can be measured using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Crossing Point Temperature (CPT) methods. The DTA curve obtained after testing is compared with actual inherent moisture and its effect on spontaneous combustion has been investigated. It has been found that the Wits-Ehac Index increases as the inherent moisture of the sample increases. Therefore it can be deduced that liability to spontaneous combustion increases with increased inherent moisture. In addition, volatiles have a catalytic affect on self heating immediately after the inherent moisture is reduced. This is identified as stage two in the thermogram. The inherent moisture has a cooling effect during the initial stages of testing and is visible in the DTA thermogram. In addition, while an increase in carbon content means an increase in Wits-Ehac Index value, an ash content decreases the likelihood of on spontaneous combustion. Approximately 20% of current world copper cathode output is produced using a hydrometallurgical process route, generally referred to as the leach–solvent extraction–electrowinning flowsheet. Since its commercialization in the late 1960s, steady improvements in the performance and efficiency of the solvent-extraction reagents and equipment, combined with significant developments in leaching and electrowinning, have made an ever-widening range of ore types amenable to this technology. Following successful implementation on all major continents, a large proportion of growth in recent years derives from the re-emergence of copper solvent extraction in the Central African Copperbelt. This review provides a brief history of the development and evolution of copper solvent extractants and mixer-settler contactors, and the significance of the Copperbelt region in achieving commercialization and acceptance of the technology. The opportunities and challenges presented by the abundant high-grade oxide ores of the Copperbelt are contrasted with the processing of solutions derived from the low-grade mixed oxide–sulfide ore bodies that are prevalent in other geological regions. The current status of hydrometallurgical copper production in the African Copperbelt, within a global context, and a medium-term outlook for the technology are discussed.

This paper is based on the experiences, over many years, of numerous authors in the South African mining industry and of the hot dip galvanizing process and its application as a corrosion protection system. The paper sets out the extensive development, financial resources and stringent operating requirements of the South African mining industry. After many years of research and operational experiences, hot dip galvanizing and, when necessary, duplex systems, have been found to meet the demanding requirements of this particular industry. The paper sets out the requirements from the standpoint of corrosion criteria and is followed with a case where the corrosion protection properties of hot dip galvanizing are demonstrated. This case history traces the early investigation of the expected corrosive conditions in a new mining operation and concludes with two follow-up visits to the mine in order to examine actual performance of the corrosion protection system after ten years in service.

This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

Common practice in mineral resource estimation consists of partitioning the orebody into several domains defined by grade intervals, prior to the geostatistical modelling and estimation/simulation at unsampled locations. This paper shows the pitfalls of grade domaining through a case study in which we compare the performance of several estimation schemes and demonstrate that the use of domains defined by grade cut-offs implies a deterioration of the resource estimates, mainly in what refers to precision and conditional bias. Then, several conceptual limitations of the grade domaining approach are stressed, in particular the fact that it does not account for the spatial dependency between adjacent domains and for the uncertainty in the domain boundaries. Also, this approach is shown to be sensitive to the cut-offs that define the domains, to provoke artifacts in the kriging maps, histograms and scatter grams between true and estimated grades, and to lower the kriging variance, a feature that may impact the mineral resource classification. An alternative approach is finally proposed to overcome these limitations, based on a stochastic modelling of the grade domains and a co-kriging of the grades using information from all the domains. "The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

The Palabora open pit is scheduled to cease operations in 2002. While the ore body continues below the bottom of the final pit shell, the stripping ratio precludes further economic open pit mining. Palabora Mining Company has investigated various means of continuing copper production, and has determined that an underground mine is the best solution. Board approval to commence construction of the mine has been granted and shaft sinking is underway. First production is planned for the year 2000 and full production of 30 000 t/d will be achieved by the end of the year 2002. [ ] Mechanised block caving will be the mining method employed at Palabora. The cave will be initiated by excavating a thin horizontal slice known as the undercut. Removal of the undercut will induce stresses which cause the rockmass overhead to fracture. Fractured rock will gravitate through drawbells to drawpoints on the production level, and be loaded by LHDs for transport to crushers.

The South African mineral resource royalty system, initiated in 2010, employs a hybrid ad valorem approach tied to profitability ratios. This rate is then applied to the total revenue from mineral sales. In this article we explore how the profitability ratio in the mineral resource royalty formulae interacts with the gold tax formula as applied to South African gold mines, devising a strategy for cut-off grade optimization. The study focuses on nine narrow, tabular-reef (Witwatersrand) gold mines. The approach involves a mixed-integer cut-off grade optimizer utilizing Excel Solver, incorporating relevant royalty and income tax formulae. Different mineral resource royalty cost scenarios were examined. Ignoring these costs in the break-even analysis lowers the cut-off grade but slightly boosts profits compared to considering expected costs. The developed optimizer model, recognizing the profitability aspect of the mineral resource royalty and income tax formulae, yielded a 6% lower cut-off grade than the base case. This is significant for increasing mine life. While the profit differences are marginal (0.2% compared to the break-even base case), substantial improvements were noted: a 6% increase in stope tons above cut-off grade, and a 4% rise in total revenue. Enhanced resource utilization (3% extra gold kilograms) reduces necessary development and overall costs, allowing for a reduction in the cut-off grade and ultimately, more profit.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

This publication records the proceedings of the Tenth International Ferroalloys Congress, INFACON X, and the third INFACON hosted in South Africa. The Proceedings of the previous two South African congresses in 1974 and 1992 serve, as this volume does, as a valuable record of the papers presented at these important events. This publication comes at a time in South Africa?s democratic development where the theme ?Transformation Through Technology? is very appropriate. The ferroalloy industry has played an increasingly significant role in transformation and black economic empowerment in South Africa, particularly through the advancement and sharing of technology. INFACON X plays an important role in this process, and the stakeholders and organisers of this Congress are thankful for the opportunity to hold this event at this time of transformation in our country. The world of ferroalloys, as well as that of the steel and stainless steel industries, has continued to change rapidly. Recent innovations, better use of resources, increased awareness of environmental issues and ongoing efforts to improve occupational health and safety are among the topics addressed at INFACON X and in these Proceedings. The theme of ?Transformation Through Technology? has been chosen to reflect the regional and global developments in the ferroalloy industry, and the crucial role that technology plays. The Proceedings of INFACON X, the first Congress in Southern Africa of the new millenium, represent a milestone in the technical developments in this major global industry. It contains almost eighty papers in twenty Sessions, from authors in twenty countries, covering raw materials, reductants, energy, electrodes, refractories, furnace design, post taphole services, modelling, simulation, control, sensors, fundamental issues and the applications of ferroalloys as related topics. The major ferroalloys, namely ferrochromium and ferromanganese, are covered extensively in many interesting papers. This comes as no surprise, since South Africa is the leading producer of ferrochromium and also plays a major role in the supply of manganese ore and alloys. Papers on ferronickel, silicon and ferrosilicon ensure that all the large-volume ferroalloys are addressed. These Proceedings of refereed papers of high quality will serve the ferroalloy industry for many years to come, as has been the case with previous INFACON events. For the first time in the history of INFACON, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in a searchable electronic CD-ROM format. We appreciate the time and effort that the authors and referees have devoted to making this publication a really valuable document. Their contributions are recorded for posterity and reflect the advancements they and their colleagues have made to benefit the ferroalloy industry. Without these ongoing improvements, the industry would stagnate and not fulfil its role in the advancement of mankind. All papers included in these Proceedings were peer-reviewed by at least two referees. About 130 referees were sourced internationally to fulfill this function, and their valuable technical and editing inputs are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, I would like to thank the Technical Programme and Publication committees, led by Dr. Lloyd Nelson and Dr. Noël Machingawuta respectively. Without the tireless efforts of these individuals and their Committee members, the technical programme and these Proceedings would not have been the success they certainly are.

The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

Utilizing a very large database from a mined-out area on a South African gold mine, the relative efficacy of a method to mitigate the smoothing effect introduced by the algorithmic constraints imposed by kriging was investigated. Smoothing effects arising from limited data availability are differentiated from the smoothing arising from the application of estimation algorithms. Very little can be done to ameliorate smoothing of estimates because of too little data, barring additional drilling or sampling. However, the smoothing effects resulting from the kriging process are shown to be mitigated by use of an alternative algorithm. The primary criterion in the development of the new algorithm was to avoid re-introducing conditional bias. This paper examines firstly the smoothing effects introduced into estimates via the kriging covariance matrix, secondly the process for ameliorating the smoothing effect, and finally it uses a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm on a very large database. The database was used to introduce a 60 m by 60 m drilling pattern which in turn was used to model the semi-variogram and produce 30 m by 30 m kriged block estimates. The follow-up database was then re-introduced (roughly 5 m by 5 m grid spacing) and averaged into 30 m by 30 m blocks to provide a direct comparison with the initial estimates. In this way the extent of smoothing and accuracy of the estimates before and after the corrections was tested.

Dense-medium beneficiation of fine (minus 0.5 mm) coal is not a new concept and has been used in South Africa previously. The dense-medium fine coal plant at Greenside Colliery operated for almost 18 years and, despite proving a difficult plant to operate, did succeed in producing a fine coal product with a low ash content of 7%. No other beneficiation process available could achieve this. Dense-medium beneficiation of fine coal was also used in other countries, of which the plants at Homer City in the USA and Curragh in Australia were the best known. The first application of dense-medium cleaning of fine coal was, however, at the Tertre plant in Belgium1. This plant was built in 1957. About nine years later, a second fine coal dense-medium plant was built at the Winterslag Mine, also in Belgium. According to reports, this plant operated satisfactorily for a period of some 17 years.
