The paper will place into perspective the contribution that platinum makes to the South African economy. It will use statistics from official sources, namely the Department of Minerals and Energy, the Department of Customs and Excise, the South African Reserve Bank and Statistics South Africa. Surprisingly few people are aware of these statistics, especially Supply and Usage tables, published by Statistics South Africa, and trade statistics, published by the Customs and Excise division of the South African Revenue Service. The paper will therefore contain a concise explanation of input-output tables and supply usage tables, as well as the derivation of gross domestic product and an outline of the System of National Accounts, of which Input-Output Tables and supply and usage tables are components. GDP is a commonly used, but poorly understood, measure of the wealth of an economy. The paper will explain the methods used by SSA to calculate this indicator and its place in the System of National Accounts (SNA). South Africa exports almost all its platinum production (87.5% in 2002). Exports are a final demand, as opposed to intermediate demand from secondary industries, and therefore do not enter the value-adding process, which is the essence of GDP. By definition, therefore, platinum on its own is not a major contributor to GDP. The platinum industry does, however, have an impact (known as the multiplier effect) on other sectors of the economy. The paper will explain the meaning and derivation of these multipliers, using a model based on an Inverse Leontief Matrix.

Performance testing is often used by project owners and financiers to provide protection from, or assessment of, technical aspects of project design, procurement, construction and commissioning. The performance tests can range from comprehensive performance warranties relating to process performance and production in the case of lump sum turn key (LSTK) projects to less onerous demonstration tests for cost reimbursable contracts. This paper will discuss performance testing from both the contractor's and owner's perspectives and focuses on: ? when performance tests are required, ? what type of performance test/warranty is optimum for each type of project, and ? how project performance should be evaluated. The requirement for performance testing can be driven by the project financiers, particularly in the case of smaller resource development companies. In such cases, differentiation between owner's risk and contractor's risk can become contentious. At the other end of the spectrum, larger mining houses may choose to heavily influence the engineering and design process with the contractor supplying services on a reimbursable basis. In that case, the performance testing process is often limited to demonstration tests that validate performance for the owner's corporate governance requirements. This paper was prepared due to the lack of published benchmarking of performance testing and the resultant differences in expectations between a contractor and a project owner that often surface late in the contract negotiation process. The paper provides a checklist of requirements for both the owner and the contractor that may be used to provide `common purpose' early in the contract negotiation process.

Graduate engineers are a scarce and valuable resource. The situation is aggravated by the 2 years of national service, resulting in the elapse of 6 years after matriculation before a young engineer can start his practical training. After having started work, it is therefore imperative that employees in this category should be trained as effectively as possible in (1) the specialized activities of the employer and (2)the employer's specific work practices. Knowledge and experience of these two areas are vitally important for productive work performance by young engineers. Consequently, it is Iscor's primary objective to enable young graduates, in this case engineers, to obtain the knowledge and experience necessary for productive work in the shortest possible time. Iscor's training programme is therefore structured to enable the young engineer to - perform high-level engineering work and to make sound engineering decisions as soon as possible, - gain a thorough background of the employer's production processes, plant, and equipment, - become thoroughly acquainted with Iscor's work practices, policies, and procedures, - acquire a sound knowledge of Iscor's management techniques and philosophies, - do productive work during the training period, - obtain the following additional qualifications as soon as possible: . Government certificate of competency (legally required before appointment to certain positions) . registration as a professional engineer. Iscor's training programmes are no longer based on predetermined periods of time for each department and work practice. Neither is it a tour or visitors' programme. This contribution explains how Iscor, and more specifically its Mining Department, attempts to reach its objectives in this regard.

A party of some 60 members of the Institute were welcomed at the Union Junction Works of Scaw Metals Limited on Thursday, 23rd January for a morning visit. Dr J. M. Bereza, the metallurgical Director, gave an informative introductory talk to the assembled visitors, which briefly covered the major activities of the Company. This was followed by refreshments, and the visitors were then allocated to 12 guides for the conducted tour of the Works. The progress of the Company is an impressive saga of the development of heavy industry in this country linked primarily to the expanding mining industry. Many other outlets are now available for Scaw products and the rapidly advancing techniques developed by their own chemists as well as the processes made available from overseas associates indicates the forward looking attitude of the Company. The visitors were impressed by the modern laboratory services, closely linked to rigid quality control, resulting in a high standard of final products. The most fascinating section to many of the visitors was the continuous casting machines and rolling mills recently installed, although the most lucrative section is the large steel foundry. After the tour the parties gathered in a marquee tent for liquid refreshments, followed by a lavish luncheon in the canteen. The visitors were officially welcomed by Mr Richard Boustred, the Deputy Managing Director, and Mr V. C. Robinson replied, thanking the Company on behalf of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Arrangements were made for golf in the afternoon at the Germiston Golf Club for those who wished to play. A.E.G.

The importance of the minerals industry in the economy of the country is discussed, and the tremendous changes that have taken place over the past two decades, including the widespread application of computers and the use of mechanization, are outlined. A discussion of the future of the minerals industry points out that, with the rise in the price of gold, the life of the gold-mining industry can be expected to extend beyond that previously predicted, and that the demand for uranium, which has been depressed, is uncertain. As a result of the oil crisis, the demand for coal has increased and large expansion programmes are planned. These involve coal exports and the use of coal for the generation of electric power, for the production of liquid fuels, and for the smelting of metals. Technical challenges face engineers in every avenue of the minerals industry: in deep gold mines, underground coal mines, strip coal mines, and open-pit mines. Studies indicate that only one-third of the demand for trained mining and metallurgical engineers is being met and that the position is worsening. However, there are indications that the industry is succeeding in attracting more engineering students, and the supply is expected to improve. These efforts should be co-ordinated, expanded, and intensified. There is a need to ensure that sufficient teaching staff of the right calibre and experience are attracted to universities and technikons. The first degree course is comprehensive and basic, and specialization through post-graduate study should be encouraged. The influence of national service on the education and training of engineers is discussed.

It is generally accepted that South African coal mines have gone through the mechanization of most of its underground mines, and while there certainly were a lot of productivity improvements, the lack of visibility on these machines operating underground still leave vast areas for improvement. The average actual cutting time still remains very low, in the 30 per cent area, which leaves significant improvement possible. Currently all analysis is carried out using hand-written reports. Unfortunately this is subjective and often inaccurate because of human interpretation. In addition in order to avoid costly component failure, a monitoring system is required to warn of eminent failures and condition monitoring. The challenge faced was to supply and install a system that was ‘Open’ and could be retrofitted to existing machines in operation because of the current standard of communication links to the underground sections. In addition it was intended to use, existing ‘off the shelf’ software and hardware and adapting this for the harsh underground mining conditions wherever possible in order to reduce costs. As development occurred, as with all technology, doors opened to other opportunities such as, remote access data logging and Internet based reporting. We focused on the Voest Alpine Bergtechnik (VA) range of continuous miners, as need arose to achieve the desired cost improvements because of the strategy of service contracts the subsidiary company, Voest Alpine Mining & Tunnelling (VAMT) offer the mining industry in South Africa. This paper describes a data logging system that has been installed on various continuous miners that provides data in real time, on line, and that could be expanded to any electrically supplied underground mobile or stationary mining machine.

The organization and mechanized colliery management of a large by G. C. THOMPSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Witwatersrand), M.B.L. (Member), and P. G. HENDERSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Pretoria), M.B.A. (Member). Usutu Collieries Limited, at present the largest single producer of coal in South Africa, supplies Cam den power station. and produces 435 000 tonnes per month by conventional mechanized methods from bord-and-pillar workings in three mines. The thickness of the seams averages 2 metres, and the depth below surface varies from 15 to 150 metres. Each mine depends to a different extent on certain common facilities and services. Two of the mines are located on the same coalfield, and their rationalization would possibly be advantageous. Production policy is one of productivity with flexibility. The double-loader system is widely used, and one section at each mine is worked on single shift. Pillar extraction is practised where possible. In addition to lubrication and inspections, planned maintenance of mining equipment consists of sub-assembly replacements and overhauls. Conveyor and tractor/trailer transport is used underground. but trolley-wire locomotive haulage is being considered. The organization is such that co-ordination is relatively difficult, and certain changes could possibly improve the functioning of the engineering and mining departments. Technical and management training is carried out. Long-term planning will make use of a computer programme and will involve the investigation of other mining methods. Five-year and twelve-month plans are prepared, the planning of coal quality being based on the view that the mine and the power station together constitute a system. Control information systems make use of a remote computer terminal located at the mine. An improved integrated system is being investigated.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10–40 km in length. Road networks for these vehicles have historically been designed and maintained empirically, relying heavily on local experience. Whilst it is possible to construct amine haul road that requires no maintenance over its service life, this would be prohibitively expensive, as would the converse but rather in terms of vehicle operating and maintenance costs. An optimal functional design will include a certain amount and frequency of road maintenance which can be planned, scheduled and optimized within the limits of required road performance and minimum vehicle operating and road maintenance costs. For existing mine haul road networks, which may not be optimally designed and maintained, the problem of identifying existing deficiencies, quantifying their impact and assigning priorities within the constraints imposed by limited capital equipment and manpower is problematic. This is reflected in the fact that most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. The aim of this paper is to present a road maintenance management system which utilizes on-board truck diagnostic data in conjunction with computer-based truck dispatch systems. Through a comparative analysis of the various haul road maintenance systems available to a mine, a condition-triggered road maintenance system is introduced. System architecture, evaluation of real-time data, event trigger level determination, specific condition signatures and real-time rolling resistance calculation are discussed. Finally the event, activity, transaction and notification system is portrayed in conjunction with the determination of key productivity indicators and benchmarked road and truck performance. Right now the South African mining industry is a high-profile, vital contributor to the nation just as it has been for the past one hundred and twenty-six years since the discovery of diamonds-perhaps even further back if the mining of copper, iron ore, tin, and other minerals in earlier centuries is included. The media in 1995, as has been the case over the years, bear testimony to the complex interactions between the industry and its stakeholders: shareholders, government, employees and their unions, training and educational institutions, researchers, markets, the public, and suppliers of goods, services, and infrastructure. The pressures and challenges that the industry continues to face can be summarized as safety and health, competitiveness, and social and environmental responsibility. There are no surprises here. The motivation for the industry to perform well in these areas is clear; the focus I intend to bring is on the most important tool required for success-that of good mining engineering. This Address sets out - to review the mining aspects that have been discussed in South Africa during the first five years of the decade, a discussion that shows the return of the country as an important mining forum, confirms the role of professional institutes and associations in the development of mining engineering, and brings current relevant issues into focus - to highlight the vital role of mining engineering in the industry, and to identify priorities for the remainder of the decade - to provide the prospective mining engineer, the mining-engineering student and trainee, and the practising mining engineer and mine manager with a better appreciation of the mining-engineering discipline. institutes and ssociations

A study of fatigue-crack growth in a rail steel and an associated weld metal showed that fatigue cracks in the deformed rail steel had slightly higher growth rates than in undeformed rail steel. The crack growth in the weld metal was appreciably faster than either and exhibited plateaux that were above the upper bound reported for rail steels, The cyclic-life curves showed that, over an indicated service period of 8 years, both the deformed and the undeformed rail steels should not be prone to fatigue failures under the defined mechanical conditions, For the weld metal, the cyclic-life curves indicated the possibility of premature fatigue failures but, as al the input parameters represented a 'worst case' situation, this assessment could wel be ultra-conservative. In the rail steels at low levels, the extension of the fatigue cracks occurred by ductile striated growth. At a Kmax level of 35 MPa .J/n, cleavage facets formed initially on the surface of the fatigue fractures, and their incidence increased with Kmax until the onset of fast failure, The microstructure of the deformed rail steel exhibited cleavage facets at a slightly lower Kmaxvalue, and contained more cleavage facets at a given K level, than the microstructure of the undeformed rail steel. The average size of the cleavage facets agreed well with the pearlite nodule dimensions of 60 to 100 ILm. The microstructure of the weld metal was much coarser and contained columnar grains. At al f.K levels, the dominant fracture mode was cleavage, with small isolated regions of ductile striated fatigue cracks. The size of the cleavage facets varied from 150 to 600 ILm, and such a variation may be explained by the fact that cracking generally occurs in association with the pro-eutectoid ferite phase, and that this phase is distributed along some boundaries of prior austenite grains and the boundaries of the coarser columnar grains.

"Flotation plant design, construction and start-up can be challenging tasks, because multiple factors and disciplines have to be combined in an efficient manner, in order to execute a project that meets the technical, financial and timeframe expectations. Key considerations that need to be addressed when designing a flotation plant are process requirements, equipment integrability, automation, and up- and downstream processes/designs. Furthermore, several other lifecycle factors need to be considered, such as servicing and maintainability, operational costs, future expansions and decommissioning, among others. To address these challenges, Outotec has developed a new approach to designing flotation plants that targets eliminating most of the inherent risks that can be found in these types of projects. The new Outotec® plant is a fully modular approach in which the above-mentioned challenges have been taken into consideration in the design phase. As a result, the cPlant concept can give several benefits for new and experienced companies involved in the minerals processing business, such as lower risk investments, fast and cost-efficient flotation plant delivery, faster ramp-up period, easy plant expansions, fully automated processes and operation and maintenance ease. As well, dismantling and transportation of the cPlant to a new location is easy and fast, hence the new cPlant concept makes possible to exploit small, short-lifespan ore deposits and also retreat old tailings ponds that might contain valuable minerals and where the ore quantities are limited. Furthermore, cPlant is easily implemented for brownfields and temporary expansions during bigger expansions."

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

The South African platinum mining industry is using a number of different mining methods, including variations of the same method, to extract the narrow reef tabular platinum deposits of the Bushveld Complex. These mining methods fall into three broad categories, namely conventional, mechanised and hybrid mining. A question sometimes asked in the industry is whether mechanized mining methods are more efficient than conventional mining methods. An objective answer requires the methods to be evaluated against multiple criteria simultaneously, whereby each criterion has a relative degree of importance in the overall decision. The most efficient method is the one that scores highest on each criterion. However, some of the criteria can be conflicting, such as by increasing dilution the shaft head grade decreases. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology was selected for the study because it is used to solve problems of this nature. A survey was carried out to determine the relative importance of each efficiency criterion by drawing on the knowledge and experience of mine technical services and project management practitioners in the industry. Efficiency data for four different mining methods drawn from the Egerton (2004) study were used as a case study. The conventional mining method ranked as the most efficient mining method from the four methods considered. The exercise indicates potential for the AHP to be used in the South African platinum mining industry as a tool for selecting optimal layout designs, conduct regular evaluation of the performance of production shafts, or objectively evaluate line managers for promotion. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology used in a current PhD research study at the University of the Witwatersrand. The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is under construction now in Korea. For the stability analysis of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For this analysis, in-situ rock stresses were measured by overcoring method and horizontal to vertical stress ratio was calculated 1.07-1.32 at four sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from intact rock properties. The ratio of elasticity of rock mass was 0.16-0.55 of intact rock core elasticity. In general, elasto-plasticity with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion was applied and the input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 of intact rock strength parameters, respectively. En general, elasto-plasticite avec le critere de defaut Mohr-Coulomb etait utilisee et sa cohesion d'energie et son angle de friction interieure etaient supposees respectivement 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 fois que la parametre de l'intensite de roche intacte.

"Studs are rods threaded on both ends and are used as mechanical fasteners for two or more components. Stud finds usage in industries such as automotive, construction and aviation. The advantage of studs is that they allow for disassembly of components during maintenance. Studs are continuously subjected to both tensile and shear stresses, depending on the application, therefore they should be manufactured from suitable materials that are capable of withstanding all these external forces. Studs are sometimes manufactured from re-sulphurized steel due to its improved machinability; however, there is a certain limit on the amount of sulphur, above which failure may occur. Premature failure of studs has been a common problem, but failed studs are commonly replaced with new ones without conducting failure investigations. The present work investigates the premature failure of two re-sulphurized steel studs used on a rocker arm assembly and recommends alternative materials. The investigation was carried out by conducting visual examination, microstructural analysis, hardness measurements, chemical analysis and a detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation on the fracture surface.IntroductionTwo rocker arm studs used on a 16-cylinder diesel locomotive engine failed prematurely after being in service for less than 5 months. The rocker arm studs had a life-cycle of 5 years. The studs were manufactured from resulphurized steel. The paper aims to establish whether re-sulphurized steel is applicable for the manufacture of studs in the automotive industry.BackgroundLocomotives are classified as either electric or fuel-powered. Diesel locomotives are an example of fuel-powered locomotives. This type of locomotive uses a diesel engine as a means for propulsion. An engine converts chemical energy into mechanical energy required for traction. In an internal combustion engine a rocker arm is an oscillating lever that conveys radial movement from the cam lobe into linear movement to open and close poppet valves of cylinders (Husain and Sheikh, 2013). The rocker arms are secured on to the cylinder head by rocker arm studs."

Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.
