The year 1991 recorded unprecedented change throughout the world; war in the Middle East, economic recession in key industrial nations, upheaval in Eastern Europe, and the disintegration of the former U.S.S.R. These issues and growing environmental concerns will affect the entire world mining industry. Environmental issues continue to have an ever greater effect on industrial minerals. In the United States, major issues involving the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the recent Stormwater Rule by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) affect many types of mineral operations. Significant developments include an important decision in 1991 by a Federal Appellate Court to overturn EPA's asbestos ban on certain products, partly on environmental grounds, and proposed legislation that would overhaul or abandon the 1872 Mining Act. On a global scale, prominent issues include environmental concerns over mining in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and a cutback in plans to clean up the Kola Peninsula in the Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.).

Garnets are usually found well crystallized in the cubic system , the principal forms being rhombic dodecahedrons , tetragonal trisoctahedrons or combinations of the two , and hexoctahedrons . They also occur as rounded disseminated glassy grains and in compact massive , laminated or gramlar aggregates . They vary greatly in color , but the most common garnets , almandite and andradite , are most often found of a dark red or reddish brown color .

The object of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of certain cationic flotation collectors , Ethomeens , in recovering fine particles of lead minerals from mill tailings at a grade equal , at least , to that of the mill feed ( 1.7 percent lead ) . The Ethomeens , derived from tertiary amines having one fatty alkyl group and two polyoxyethylene groups attached to the nitrogen , were evaluated by bench- scale flotation tests . The 14 Ethomeens tested consisted of four groups : Coco amine , soybean amine , tallow amine , and stearyl amine . The best results were obtained with coco amine C / 12 , soybean amine S/ 15 , tallow amine T / 12 , and stearyl amine 18/20 . From a feed containing 0.23 percent lead , rougher concentrate grades of 2.12 to 3.89 percent lead were obtained , with recoveries of 17.3 to 27.5 percent of the total lead . Some of the lead mineral particles recovered had diameters of less than 1 micron . In comparative tests , the Ethomeens , or polyethoxylated amine types of cationic surface active agents , were more selective than conventional xanthate collectors for flotation of slimed lead minerals .

The chlorination of Cr₂ 03 (chromic oxide ) in the presence of carbon with CC14 (carbon tetrachloride ) and COCl2 (phosgene ) chlorinating agents was investigated by employing the radioactive tracer carbon By tagging carbon mixed with Cr₂ 0з , the chlorination reaction was evaluated in terms of the competitive reaction of the elemental carbon and the carbon contained by the chlorinating agent . A unique gas - analysis train was used to separate the chlorination product gases ; CO , CO₂ , and COC12 . The C¹ activity of the gases was determined and used to calculate the reactivity of each source of carbon . Reactivities were determined for the temperature range from 600 ° to 900 ° C. The results of the investigation show that each source of carbon reacts significantly with the Cr2 03 and that the reactivity of each form of carbon depends on the reaction temperature , and each form is independent of the other . Radioisotope and gas - analysis techniques are discussed and a description of the experimental apparatus is given .

"INTRODUCTION One of the principal activities of the Bureau of Mines during the recent war was to help to increase the supply of strategic and critical minerals. Fluorite was one of the most critical of the nonmetallic minerals because of the increased demand for it as a flux in basic open-hearth and electric steel furnaces and as a raw material for the production of artificial cryolite used in the aluminum industry. Wartime developments in the technology of hydro-fluoric acid, such as the use of the anhydrous acid as a catalyst in high-octane-gasoline production and the use of organic fluorides as carriers for insecticides, also increased the demand for acid-grade fluorspar. 2/ In 1943 the consumption of acid-grade fluorspar was advancing at a more rapid rate than production and was only slightly less than production during the latter half of the year.The outlook for the postwar market for fluorspar is encouraging. Steel production is expected to remain high until the domestic demand for commodities not manufactured during the war is satisfied. The uses for hydrofluoric acid also are expected to increase under the impetus of war-initiated research. In consideration of these and other factors some authorities predict a new peacetime demand for fluorspar equal to 60 to 75 percent of the war production, 5/ 6/ and others believe that the fluorspar industry will be permanently expanded. 7/"

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) conserves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Since RO has a variable composition, there was concern that the additives/impurities it contains may cause ANFO made with RO to be unstable (as compared to regular ANFO) at high summer ambient storage temperatures. Reactivity of RO with zinc was also a concern. Thermal stability tests were conducted to help quantify and resolve these issues. ANFO mixtures (0.66 lb/300 g) were put into sample containers made of steel, stainless steel, and galvanized (zinc coated) steel pipe fittings, which were heated in isothermal ovens. The experimental parameters were temperature settings of 140° F (60° C) and 176° F (80° C), four sample container (pipe fitting) metal combinations, and nominal heating periods of one and three days. The ANFO samples contained 6% each of the following twelve different oils/oil mixtures: No. 1 was diesel fuel, Nos. 2 thru 6 were five candidate oils (2 thru 5 were used oils and 6 was a new synthetic oil), No. 7 was 5% diesel fuel + 1 % graphite, and Nos. 8 thru 12 were 3% diesel fuel + 3% each of the five candidate oils. All samples showed no reactivity when heated at 140° F (60°C). All samples (except No. 7) reacted at 176° F (80° C) in a steel pipe with galvanized caps as follows: No. I reacted most, Nos. 8-12 reacted moderately, and Nos. 2-6 reacted least. All ANFO samples were tested and found not to be cap sensitive.

"IntroductionMany bituminous coal-mining companies have inaugurated extensive safety Programs, but the failure to have approved or permissible equipment or safe practice in only one part of a mine has resulted in disaster. The necessity of using only equipment bearing the U. S. Bureau of Mines approval plate is emphasized by the fact that many accidents are the direct result of carelessness on the part of trusted employees using non-permissible equipment. A concrete example is found in the case of an explosion on October 26, 1926, in a mine in the Pittsburgh district, Pennsylvania.Story of the ExplosionAt about 10 o'clock on the night of the explosion an examination was made in No 2 butt left and parallel off 7o. 14 north, and was found to be clear of dangerous accumulations of gas. (See figure). Several hours later a crew of two men brought a self-propelling rock-dusting machine within 50 feet of the face of Po. 2 butt parallel before they examined for gas. The machine operator found an accumulation of explosive gas about 18 inches from the roof. He began to wave his arms thoroughly mixing the gas and air. Undoubtedly a highly explosive mixture was created, and as the men attempted to run the machine back to fresh air an explosion occurred.The helper dropped to the floor and was burned about the face and wrists. The machine operator ran down the entry and was more severely burned about the face, neck, and arms. He later developed pneumonia and died. Both men reached the door in the chute between No. 14 and No. 15 north. A pumper, who had felt the rush of air, found the men and helped them to walk outside."

The rapidly expanding economy of the West, with its growth of heavy industry, and increased steel production, is primarily responsible for the refractory clay industry's concern over the adequacy of the clay supply in States of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Hence, the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the occurrence and use of refractory clays in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona has been encouraged by the major consumers and producers of this commodity. The Wyoming investigation is a part of the national program devised to close gaps in the domestic supply of specific types of clays to determine their characteristics and properties and to provide information that will assist the refractory-clay industry. Forty-two locations of clay-bearing rock in 17 areas in Wyoming were examined (fig. 1). Location 3 was not examined during this survey. Its description was taken from an earlier report. Locations 20, 21, and 22 were previously reported but were, also, examined by the Bureau. No samples were collected from these locations because field examination indicated that the shales were not refractory grade. The Hulett, Aladdin, and Newcastle areas are discussed in the section on the Black Hills district; the other 14 areas are described separately.

"The petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines in its laboratory investigations, has had occasions to develop a number of types of electrical heating equipment. It was found that electric heaters could be used to particular advantage in the standard distillation test for gasoline. (Dean, E.W., Motor Gasoline, Properties, Laboratory Methods of Testing and Practical Specifications, Bureau of Mines Technical raper 214, 1919, 33 pages.) In order to assist in rendering this type of heater available for general use, a description of the apparatus developed by the Bureau was published. (Dean, E.W., A convenient electric heater for use in the analytical distillation of gasoline,. Jour. Ind, and Eng. Chem., Vol.10, 1918, page 823.) Shortly after the article was printed a chemical supply house undertook the manufacture of an electric heater suitable for gasoline distillation. A preliminary model was examined and tested by the Bureau and modifications were suggested that were incorporated in the type of heater that was finally marketed.Description of the Bureau of Mines-heater: The electric heater developed by the Bureau has an inverted conical resistance Plament surrounded by a layer of heat-insulating material and mounted in a metal case having a top of hard asbestos (Transite) board. The resistance element is a helix of nickel-chromium alloy wire held by a molded core of alundum. The Bureau heaters are generally of about 330 watts capacity and are used with stock types of regulating rheostats capable of reducing the effective wattage to about 43 the full-load maximum."

The objective of this circular is threefold: First, to describe briefly the various modes of occurrence of sand and gravel. Second, to emphasize the need for adequate prospect¬ ing and exploration prior to the expenditure of funds for development and plant construction. Third, to describe various methods of prospecting and exploration and their application to the several modes of occurrence of sand and gravel. Sand and gravel may be found in nearly every county or township in the United States. Commercial deposits, however, are by no means so widespread. The introduction of concrete and the consequent impetus given to consumption of gravel and sand aggregates has seriously depleted deposits in some congested areas. Increasing re¬ strictions in the specification requirements for marketing sands and gravels have further narrowed the economic areas. On the other hand, the combination of increasing transportation costs and decreasing selling prices has forced the decentralization of gravel production. As a result smaller, intermittently operated, and widely scattered portable or semiportable unit plants have been encroaching on the territory formerly supplied from centrally located pits with large tr.atment plants. Generally speaking, the small portable plant can not produce any great variety of ma¬ terials to as exacting specifications nor as economically as the large permanent plant.

It represents our capacity for vision, for collecting sensory information about our environment and the events unfolding within it.? (source: The Feng Shui Handbook, feng shui Master Lam Kam Chuen.) There are Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Egyptian, and Native American counterparts of the phoenix. All of these birds are identified with the sun and depicted as rising from the ashes ? living again. This is the essence of a community after a natural disaster ? they live again. The Phoenix of Natural Disasters: Community Resilience is edited by Kathryn Gow and Douglas Paton who have done an excellent job of creating a relatively seamless transition between chapters with different authors. The content is organized well with the first chapter providing an excellent overview of what is to come and each chapter including an abstract clarifying the focus of the chapter.

An aircraft auxiliary power unit (APU) was used as an exhaust source for evaluation and refinement of sampling and analytical procedures for gas turbine engines. The unit was also used to determine the emission characteristics of APU's in service and to study the effect of fuel composition and combustor design on exhaust emissions. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, aldehydes, particulate loading, and odor were measured at engine operating modes representing the duty cycle encountered in airline operation. Analyses showed good repeatability, and adequate sensitivity was attained in these experiments. Smoke opacity measurements were not taken owing to the lack of a high-sensitivity smokemeter. Results showed that the minimum emission levels occurred with the standard combustor and Jet A fuel. Emission rates were highly dependent on test mode, but emission patterns as a function of test mode were similar for all fuels and combustors tested. A comparison of three identical design production combustors showed a variation in average emission rates of less than 5 pct.

"INTRODUCTION The practicability of providing safer methods of underground transportation for mine workmen and officials has been given much thought in recent years by advocates of safety, health, and efficiency. Numerous fatalities and disabling injuries have resulted from falls of roof, personal contact with both electrical conductors and timbers, and improper position or conduct of passengers while they were in man-trips. Unfavorable atmospheric exposure due to high-velocity air currents and sudden changes in temperature may adversely affect the health of mine workmen if they are transported in unprotected Cars.Recent installations of protected, man-trip cars, wherein such cars have been utilized to haul men to and from their stations in the mine, have resulted in a large reduction in exposure to haulage hazards. Where special-built cars have been used the probability of injuries to men during transportation in man-trips has been decreased, and the morale of the employees has been improved. A number of man-trip cars are in service in the coal-mining regions; those described in this circular are typical examples of a few installations."

In 1981, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a survey of claims and prospects in the Wheeler Ridge RARE II area to determine if mineral resources or potential for resources exists at deposits in the area. Results of Bureau of Mines investigations indicate the area contains no identified mineral deposits. However, the geologic setting at the Round Valley Peak Prospect near the center of the study area is considered to be favorable for the discovery of tungsten resources with associated molybdenum and copper. Tungsten deposits, should they be present, would be expected to occur at depth in tactite at or near the calcareous rock-granite intrusive contact. Sand, gravel, and stone deposits in the area are not considered to be resources because equal or better quality material is available closer to major markets. INTRODUCTION The 16,200-acre (6,560 ha) Wheeler Ridge study area is 11 mi (18 km) northwest of Bishop, California, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada range. The John Muir Wilderness adjoins the study area's western boundary (fig. 1).

(B) Injury experience at different kinds of quarries: Tables 4-5: Current data on number of injuries, injury-frequency rates, location, accident agency, degree of injury, and related employment, data. (C) Injury experience by States: Tables 6-20: Current data on the number of injuries, injury-frequency rates, accident agency, degree of injury, and related employment data. (D) Selected injury data: Tables 21-30: Current data on various selected factors of operating conditions at different kinds of quarries, including employment size-groups, length of shifts, comparative severity of injuries, and injury data and related employment experience at dimension-stone and nondimension-stone quarries and at underground quarries. (E) Historical injury experience: Table 31: Injury and employment data on the quarrying industry for 1911 through 1957. Statistical data on injuries and related employment in the quarrying industries have been collected annually from the operating companies since 1911. Reporting to the Bureau of Mines is voluntary; there is no Federal law compelling operators of quarries and related plants to supply such data. Data presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry. They are however, believed to be representative of the hazards common to all quarry and related workers. Moreover, the figures are comparable as between States-a significant fact in view of the lack of uniformity among the States with regard to the classes of injuries covered by State reports and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible when using State records to

Two statistical techniques, the mean-square-successive-difference test and correlation, are used to investigate the problem of assigning an area of influence to an assay. Data from five hydrothermal deposits, Climax molybdenum, Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron, San Manuel copper, Piedra Hueca copper, and Butte copper, are studied. Two groupings of the assays are used for the mean-square-successive-difference tests. One group involves an increasing sample volume by reaveraging assays to represent a longer sample intervals, the other by regrouping assays to represent longer sample intervals without a change in sample volume.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation, and the U.S. Geological Survey did a geological appraisal of an east portion of the Bear-Marshall-Scapegoat-Swan (BMSS) RARE II area (No. A1485) to provide mineral resource information for land use planning. The Bureau of Mines' investigation consisted of a library and field search for all mineral properties and occurrences, and included a review of Teton County mining claim records. Those records showed two placer claims, the only mining-related activity known in the area. Six reconnaissance pan samples were taken in the vicinity of the two placer claims, the Lone Star and Spotted Horse, located on Hannan Gulch in 1900 and 1901. One sample contained a trace of gold, but there are no identified resources. However, the study area is in the Rocky Mountain Overthrust Belt, which is productive for oil and gas elsewhere. The entire study area is blanketed by oil and gas leases and is currently being explored.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by the need forr a stable anode for electrowinning metals, particularly zinc and copper, from acid solutions. The polarization behavior of Pb-Ag (1 pct Ag) anodes in H2SO4 and fluoride solutions was determined as the first step in the development of such an anode. A Luggin capillary, dc power supply, high-impedance voltmeter, and other equipment standard to an electrochemical laboratory were used in this study. It was determined that during polarization, a relatively hard, stable coating of Pb02 was formed on the surface of the lead-silver anode and the rate of formation of this coating was considerably enhanced by the presence of fluoride ions in solution. Subsequent investigations at the Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center resulted in the development of a Pb02-coated titanium (Pb02-Ti) anode. Results of this effort were presented in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 8111. Additional data resulting from extensive testing of the Pb02-Ti anodes, as well as process improvements and innovations, are included in this report. The anodes were considered generally unsatisfactory for zinc electrowinning because of lower conductivity, higher oxygen overvoltages, and shorter in-cell life as compared with the Pb-Ag anodes now being used in industry. However, the PbO2-Ti anodes were used successfully to oxidize waste chromium solutions and to electrowin copper.
