As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to establish a comprehensive subsidence data base for subsidence technology development, subsidence and related data are being compiled for various mining, geological, and environmental situations. This publication presents data for two longwall mining operations in the Northern Appalachian Coal Region. Vertical displacements and relative face positions are tabulated for 104 subsidence monuments. Brief physiographic and geological descriptions of the mining sites are presented along with a general account of the mining and subsidence monitoring methods.

The United States Bureau of Mines has made a study of roof control in 68 mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. In making these studies, much information was also obtained on various exact methods of development and pillar extraction as practiced by this large group of mines. It is proposed in this paper to describe these methods, by which this group of mines in 1931, a year of reduced industrial activity, produced 28,123,000 tons of bituminous coal - 7.4 percent of the national production for the same year and an amount equal to the combined production of the coal mired in the States of Alabama, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. The results of these studies, insofar as they pertain to the prevention of injuries from falls of roof, have been published by the Bureau of Mines. In this paper only a few mines typical of each system will be described; however, should the reader be interested in other details with respect to these mines, he may refer to the following publications: T.P. 522, 1932, 43 pp. Falls of roof and coal in mines operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed in Marion and Monongalia Counties, W. This report summarizes the results of the Narragansett Win Projec't's activities during the U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) Phase 1, which was transitional from and which followed the National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase which initiated the investigation of New England's potential roil resource. The 960 sq. mile basin is structural and topographic lowland containing 12,000 to 20,000 ft. of terrigenous clastic sediments of late Pennsylvanian age, and which rests on an upper Precambrian and Cambrian basement. The Rhode Island Formation, which is the coal-bearing unit, comprising the bulk of the Pennsylvanian rocks consists, in order of decreasing abundance, of sandstone, conglomerate, silts tone, shale, and coal. In the NSF Phase, 24 drill-holes yielded 17,900 ft, of core; in the BOM Phase I study, 4 drillholes yielded 2,100 ft. of core. Anthracite and semi-anthracite was encountered in beds Up to 30 ft. thick in widely spaced parts of the Basin. The coal, typically very low in sulfur, and a high ash anthracite, won mined in substantial volumes from 1808 to 1959 from shaft and open lit in Portsmouth and Cranston, R.I., and in lesser volumes in Mansfield, Mass. Currently coal is now being mined in Plainville, Mass. as a fuel in the manufacturing of light-weight aggregate from the same quarry that serves as the source of the rock being processed. The structurally complex Narragansett Basin is now known to have a greater extent than earlier since recent drilling by others (Chapter 2) has confirmed our interpretation that the Basin extended offshore south A Boston. The, Basin also extends into Rhode Island Sound to the south. The geological structure is more complex in the southern part of the Basin than in the northern part. Three episodes of folding have been documented on Aquidneck Island and four episodes of faulting have been demonstrated for the Basin as a whole. Relatively less well exposed rock in the northern part of the Basin, increases the difficulty of recognizing and correlating structural episodes in the northern part of the Basin. The Basin his hewn subdivided into six structural domains which appear to have distinctive structural, metamorphic, paleontological and sedimentological differences that mw assist in isolating important events in the evolution of the Basin and its component parts. The tentative structural model recently developed in POP Phase I has important implications for exploration and mining. In the first and second folding stages the coal is mobilized and thickened in the crests and troughs of folds whose axes are horizontal to subhorizontal. While conventional coal exploration and mining methods are not applicable, great thickening in the crests and troughs of large scale structures, which can he defined by geology, geophysics and drilling, may provide compensating advantages. Bedrock over most of the Basin is 0-50 ft., but thicknesses of glacial deposits up to 150 ft. are present locally. Pro-Pleistocene topographic trends are controlled by structure and rock hardness; Pleistocene deposits aligned to the S. F. are superimposed on earlier trends. The southern part of the Basin is mainly dominated by high grade Barrovian metamorphism and plutonism of Permian age, related to the Alleghanian Orogeny. About 300 sq. miles of the 960 sq. mile Basin has been affected. The remaining 660 sq. miles, in the chlorite and subchlorite zones of metamorphism are compatible with the presence of high quality anthracite and semi-anthracite. Illite crystallinity studies begun in the NSF Phase, have been carried out in the BOM Phase l with important results. About ME of the northern Basin is now known to be in the diagenetic (unmetamorphosed) or subchlorite zone and the remainder in the chlorite zone of metamorphism. Mite studies, probably best recording temperature effects, show a generally progressive increase from the NW corner of the Basin near Plainville, Mass. toward the south and southeast. Reflectivity and coal petrography studies, probably best recording pressure and effects related to shearing, indicate a generally opposite pattern. Thus these methods provide powerful tools for the ultimate solution of problems important to coal exploration for coals of higher combustible volatile content and exploitation of these. Due to the complex nature of the coal, chemical data may not he easily used to determine rank. The coals have been tectonically deformed and mineralized. This deformation plus thermal metamorphism have altered the coals, in some cases by producing natural coke. Brecciated coal is often coated with a secondary depositional carbon. The coals' hydroscopic nature and high ash contents are due to the deformed nature of the coal and the presence of this secondary carbon. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the coal-bearing Rhode Island Formation is similar to described alluvial fan deposits. The non-geological studies al-low three conclusions to be made: 1. A substantial number of areas have been identified in the Narragansett Basin in which mining could be carried out without undue difficulty from a land use point of view. 2. Substantially more than two hundred instances of past or current- mining activities have been identified in the Basin. Many of those are in areas defined as geologically interesting, and may be advantageous From the point of view of future exploration. 3. The map synthesis technique developed for this contract is successful and may easily be adapted to future exploration in its current form and also in its expandable form dealing with unit measurements of one-tenth mile. We recommend that BOM Phase 2 exploration should accomplish the intent of the Congressional language in House Report No. 95-1251, to continue a substantial drilling and geophysics program: "The Committee expects the Bureau to continue studies involved in ascertaining the extent and quality of low sulfur coal reserves in the Narragansett Basin in New England including necessary drilling and geophysical studies. The knowledge of the extent of such deposits is of great importance to this 'energy pour' area".

The applicability of a rotating drum with an attached trommel as a flocculation dewatering device of Florida phosphatic claywastes was studied. Several experiments were conducted in order to determine the important fabrication and operating parameters. Results from the experiments indicated flint the dosage of polyethylene oxide required to form a satisfactory product cake could be reduced by using the rotary drum, which introduces less shear stress into the fluid than a constant stirred tank mixer. It was found that the length of the mixer was the most important parameter. Increased length increased the retention time the flocs stayed in the mixer without dewatering. Such increased time decreased the stability of the flocs. Through analysis of residence time distribution data it was found that the longer mixers approached plug flow characteristics. Other important parameters were trommel length and rotational speed. Mixers from 10 cm diameter to 35.6 cm diameter were tested with good results.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. (a) In-shaft equipment design and specification criteria are considered as they influence guideline preparation. (b) A comprehensive review of hoist electric drives and controls as applied to mine hoists is set forth with special reference to duty cycle calculations and their effect on electrical component selection.

In 1948 the United States became a net importer of oil. Coupled with an unpre- cedented domestic production of 5,900,000 barrels daily, imports approximating 500,000 barrels made available a total supply of 6,400,000 barrels a day. Thus, by herculean effort, the oil industry was able to meet an extraordinary demand at home and, in addition, to ship abroad almost 400,00 barrels daily of petroleum and products. The country's oil position now differs greatly from that prevailing at the be- ginning of World War II. Then, actual oil production averaged about 4 million bar- rels a day, and productive capacity probably was greater than 5 million barrels a day. As the demand of the military and industrial machine grew with the rising tempo of the drive toward victory, the United States not only met its own needs but pro- duced about two-thirds of the total oil requirements of the Allied Nations, excluding Russia. As a people, we can be deeply grateful that the Nation's petroleum resources were adequate and sufficiently developed to support such a tremendous effort. Even in those critical hours when immediate needs were the paramount issues, a prudent Congress paused to contemplate the importance of an assured long-term supply of liquid fuels. From these deliberations came the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act of 1944, which authorized research and development work on new sources of oil coal, oil shale, and agricultural and forestry products. ce World War II, a civilian demand for 6 million barrels of petroleum prod- ucts has become the order of the day every day. By drilling as many as 39,000 new wells a year, the production rate has been increased enough to meet domestic require- ments by a bare margin. Some imports were necessary, however, to fill both domestic and foreign demands, and these doubtless will increase. Is this policy of exploration within the United States and the development of oil in foreign countries adequate insurance for the fulfillment of our future national needs? This question has two aspects one purely civilian and economic in character and the other significant from the standpoint of our national defense. There are now approximately 4,000 producing oil fields in this country. At first thought, it would appear that production could decline in a considerable number of these fields without materially affecting the over-all daily output. However, 48 percent of the oil comes from only 111 major fields which contain 50 percent of the total proved domestic reserves. It is apparent, then, that the flow from large fields - having proved reserves of 100 million barrels or more each must be sustained if daily production is to be kept at the present levels. Essentially, this means that new major fields must be discovered about as rapidly or perhaps more rapidly than the older ones lose productive capacity. From 1940 through 1947, only eight major fields with estimated reserves of more than 100 million barrels each, were discovered and proved - an average of one such field a year. The total estimated reserve of these eight fields was less than 1 year's supply at the present rate of use. As drilling continues, some existing fields ultimately will prove reserves larger than those now known. Without a pronounced increase in the num- ber of major discoveries, however, the prospects for increasing our present productive level are not encouraging. Any gap that appears between domestic productive capacity and demand could be filled with supplies from proved oil resources abroad. This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . [Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. It has bin shown in the, case of certain synthetic solutions5/ that large errors may result if the analysis is carried out by simple extraction with alkali and mineral acids.]

This Bureau of Mines report describes research on methods of assuring the continued safety of mine electrical power distribution circuits through reliability and quality assessment of the protective devices, innovative inspection techniques for these devices and the circuits themselves, novel applications of trolley line circuit breakers, and computer modeling of distribution systems to determine the proper ratings for cables, power sources, and circuit protective elements. Battery charger safety is included.

This report describes methods of reclaiming abandoned or inactive tailings ponds and dams. The investigated sites were selected tailings deposits adjacent to metal mines in the southwestern United States and the Pacific Northwest. The basic data developed for each site consisted of the following: a review of existing literature: a site visit that included sampling of the tailings and surrounding materials; laboratory and engineering studies; and development of reclamation plans. Laboratory tests determined the gold and silver content of each tailings deposit and the chemistry of the tailings and surrounding materials. Reclamation plans that include approximate costs were developed for five tailings deposit sites. These ranged in size from 52,000 to 103,000,000 tons. Our conclusions on the remining potential of each site are based on the tailings assay and other technical data. This study concludes that remining as a reclamation tool is feasible at certain sites. Included in this report is a remining program as part of the overall reclamation plan for two sites. Our preliminary results indicate that remining as a reclamation tool is feasible for only one of them.

Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes; part 2, power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators, and hydraulic monitors; part 3, hydraulic, clamshall, ladder, and diaper dredges; part 4, haulage equipment, particularly industrial cars with locomotive or hoist as the motive power; part 5, conveyor belt, motor truck, pump and pipe line, towboat and barges, and aerial-trams haulage. This circular discusses the application of these various types of equipment to the different types of sand and gravel deposits and contains a reference bibliography. It completes the discussion of excavating problems.

"Conservation of slateWaste slate is a problem of outstanding importance in the slate industry, for a very large proportion of all slate quarried is thrown on the waste heap. While many uses for waste slate have been found, the demand calls for merely a fraction of the present supply of unused material. If the slate industry is to increase in prosperity, the producer's energy must be directed toward the development of ways and means of reducing waste to the lowest possible point. The Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior has devoted much study to this problem and a recent bulletin ** contains a detailed discussion of the waste problem.Attention has recently been directed toward an improved method of cutting slate in quarries, a method that promises to reduce greatly the percentage of waste material. The method has been introduced since that bulletin was published, and this supplementary paper covers the details of the process.A reversion in method,In connection with this new mode of operation history is repeating itself in a very interesting way, for the old quarry bar used years ago with steam drills, and later discarded in favor of the channeling machine .and the hammer drill, has been salvaged from the scrap heap, and again put to active use. The occasion for its employment is an attempt to improve quarry methods by the substitution of drilling for channeling or blasting."

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

A three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed of an instrumented section of a double-entry coal mine in order to provide a comparison between field measurements and existing analytic techniques. The BMINES computer code was used to perform the analysis. The sequence of excavation of the entries was considered, as well as the installation of rock bolts and cribbing during the mining cycle. The materials In the region under investigation were idealized into four rock types and coal. The rocks were assumed to be isotropically elastic, perfectly plastic. Coal was represented by an elastically anisotropic (transverse isotropy) and plastically isotropic model. A fracture yield criterion of the Coulomb form was used for all materials. The strength and stiffness of all materials were substantially reduced from available laboratory data to account for in-situ properties. Qualitative trends and stress distributions obtained from the calculation were found to be reasonable. However, computed displacements and closures were greatly exaggerated and an excessive degree of inelastic deformation was indicated in the coal, especially adjacent to the excavated faces. It was established that both these effects were the result of an excessive reduction in the strength and stiffness of the materials. The analysis underscores the need for three-dimensional calculations by identifying a number of important structural response parameters that would be either outside the scope of, or misrepresented by, two-dimensional analyses. The analysis also emphasizes the need for comprehensive and accurate measurement of material properties in order fully to exploit the power of the analytical techniques to generate reliable predictions.
