This report describes a Bureau of Mines study undertaken to determine the applications and limitations of solution techniques as a general method of fluorescent X-ray spectrographic analysis. Systematic errors due to variations in particle size, surface preparation, and sample inhomogeneity are eliminated by the use of solutions. The range of applicability of fluorescent X-ray spectrography is increased in two ways: (1) Samples in the form of wire, filings, turnings, etc., can be analyzed as solutions, and (2) samples submitted as solutions can be analyzed as received 0 The lower limit of detectability varies from 0.14 gram per liter for sulfur, atomic number 16, to 0.0015 gram per liter for strontium, atomic number 38. Most elements have limits of detectability between 0.02 and 0.002 gram per liter.

The Bureau of Mines study indicates that land utilized by the mining industry for mineral extraction and processing from 1930 through 1980 amounted to 5.7 million acres, or 0.25 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed by the industry during the same period was 2.7 million acres, or 47 percent of the land utilized. Land use by the mining industry includes surface land used for excavation or mining, for waste from underground mining, and for wastes from milling or processing operations. Data on land use for disposal of overburden waste from surface coal mines and on areas affected by subsidence associated with underground mining are included for the period 1930-71 only. The 10 leading States in total land used for mining over the 51-year period were, in decreasing order, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, and Missouri. Seven mineral commodities accounting for 92 percent of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, phosphate rock, clay, copper, and iron ore, all predominately surface mined. Bituminous coal production was responsible for nearly half of the total area utilized. Reclamation of mined lands and waste disposal sites over the reporting period was largely on lands utilized in mining bituminous coal; 75 percent of the land used for bituminous coal production was reclaimed.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, four underground respirable dust surveys were conducted to determine factors affecting belt entry dust levels and how using belt air to ventilate work areas affected dust exposures. Belt entry dust levels on the surveyed longwall and continuous miner sections averaged 0.59 and 0.26 mg/m3, respectively. The stageloader-crusher contributed an additional 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m3 of dust to belt air, while the feeder-breaker contributed 0 to 0.2 mg/m3 of dust. A 1,000-ft increase in belt entry length or a 200- to 500-st-per-shift increase in production resulted in roughly a 0.1-mg/m3 increase in dust. Using the belt entry as an intake entry on the continuous miner section appeared to reduce dust levels by 0.1 to 0.3 mg/m3 during cutting. Belt air was not used to ventilate the face on the longwall section.

SYNOPSIS OF LAW All useful substances of the mineral Kingdom belong originally to the State. The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. During 1946 several high-grade limestone deposits in western Washington were examined by the Bureau of Mines. This report presents the data obtained from investigation of the Sauk Mountain deposits in east-central Skagit County, Washington, The investigation consisted of transit and topographic surveys and sampling. The areas selected for sampling were first cleaned by blasting; channel samples up to 40 pounds Were cut where practical. Chip samples averaging 30 pounds were taken where channel samples could not be cut. A total of 21 samples in the Sauk Mountain area were taken and analyzed. The locations of the samples are shown in figures 2 and 4, and the analyses are listed in tables 1 and 2. This investigation is a part of a long-range program of general investigation of mineral resources for future industrial development of the Pacific Northwest. The Sauk Mountain deposits were investigated for the purpose of disclosing new sources of high-purity limestone, which could be mined and shipped at low cost to Seattle and other industrial cities in the Pacific Northwest.

Low-cost hydroelectric energy in the Pacific Nortnwest has been an important factor in the development of a ferroalloy industry. Eleven companies, employing approximately 1,000 persons, produce about 116,000 tons (1954-58 average) annually of ferrosilicon, ferrochromium, ferromanganese, ferrophosphorus, silicomanganese, and ferronickel. About 7,500 tons (1954-58 average) of these ferroalloys is consumed in the Pacific Northwest States of Washington and Oregon; the rest is used principally in other western and mid-western markets. In 1959, the Bureau of Mines began a study to determine the current status and to evaluate the potential of the ferroalloy industry in the Pacific Northwest. The Bureau gathered information from operating alloy plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana; from published materials; and from consumers of ferroalloys.

Factors of geological structure and occurrence of coalbeds, plus the resulting mining conditions, have required more care in preparing coals in Alabama than in most other districts almost since mining Alabama coals began. For this reason, literature on these coals may be interesting to those in areas where prime coals have been mined out, and thinner and less regular beds must now be exploited. This literature review has been arranged in order of subject matter. Some references have been listed more than once, but each separate review is limited to the material pertaining to the subject matter being discussed. For those seeking specific information, the authors have indicated which items repeat material and which items are most complete or specific. Geology, preparation, and carbonization of coal have been reviewed the most frequently.

The periphery of longwall panels in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed is characterized by a zone of reduced permeability that inhibits the natural drainage of methane. A residual gas pressure of 105 psig was measured after 1 year in an isolated block of coal measuring 340 by 1,100 feet. The buildup of gas pressure within such large blocks causes methane problems during plowing operations. However, natural drainage holes drilled during development have been found to reduce the gas content of the coal in this coalbed by over 90 percent. The effect of water infusion on dust during plowing operations was investigated using existing methane drainage holes. These holes were cleaned of debris and a pipe was grouted into the hole for water infusion of the panel. Both total and respirable dust levels were reduced by 40 to 79 percent. Water infusion of the panel proved more effective than did the use of a plow-mounted spray system.

As part of its research on advanced mining technology, the U.S. Bureau of Mines emphasizes studies on in situ leach mining. This research enables the Bureau to develop technical information that can allow mining companies to adopt in situ leach mining methods. Research results should help to remove the technical and economic barriers currently hindering the development of commercial in situ leach mining operations. This report contains papers summarizing results of Bureau research on various aspects of in situ leach mining. A featured topic is the cooperative field experiment of the Bureau and Santa Cruz Joint Venture in a copper deposit near Casa Grande, AZ. Discussions in-clude an overview of the entire project, cost modeling, environmental permitting, laboratory core-leaching experiments, petrographic studies, and an evaluation of the geologic structure in the region. In addition, papers describe hydrologic modeling and geophysical studies of solution flow during leaching. Preliminary geochemical modeling studies are also summarized. A final paper describes a nonionic chemical additive with potential for significantly reducing the high costs of drilling in in situ leach mining.

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. During 1984, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a mineral survey of the 28,600-acre South Pahroc Range Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-0132). The Wit derness Study Area is located in Lincoln County, NV, about 900 miles north of Las Vegas. Five mineral properties and two mineralized zones were examined during this study; of these, one mineralized zone, two small prospect pits, and part of two claims are within Wilderness Study Area boundaries. Perlite resources were identified in the study area; however, no significant metallic mineral values were noted at any of the sites. The Wilderness Study Area is dominated by a Tertiary volcanic sequence consisting of an interlayered series of tuffs containing thin beds of volcanic pebble gravel, sandstone, and perlite. At the base of the exposed volcanic section, perlite occurs along a 2.4-mile-long zone that parallel s the study area's northeastern boundary. The perlite is suitable for filtration, insulation, and soil conditioning purposes, Because of prohibitive operation and transportation costs, the estimated 6 million tons of perlite occurring inside the South Pahroc Range Wilderness Study Area are classified as an indicated subeconomic resource.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. In Bureau of Mines research on recycling chrome refractory wastes, used refractories from argon-oxygen decarburization and electric steelmaking furnaces were beneficiated, concentrates were reformed into briquets, and modulus of rupture tests were conducted at 1,350° C. The test results indicated that the beneficiated minus 6-mesh material could be used for producing magnesia-chrome refractories.

The Tenth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Research was held in the United States from September 28 through October 2, 1959, at Hotel Webster Hall, Pittsburgh, Pa. The Conference was organized by the Federal Bureau of Mines. In accord with the program outlined at the Ninth Conference (1956, Heerlen, Holland), the papers submitted dealt with the following three subjects: 1. Safety of coal mine explosives 2. Explosion hazards in mines 3. Ignition and fires in mines Seventy papers were presented. There were eight technical sessions followed by an extended tour of the Bruceton facility of the Bureau of Mines on October 2. Simultaneous translation was provided in the three official languages of the Conference--English, French, and German.

This circular presents results of a survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines to ascertain the extent to which dust-control practices are employed in the coal-mining industry. This survey was initiated because of increasing realization of the possible harmful effects of the inhalation of dust upon the health of coal-mine workers and the advent, during recent years, of new types of mining machinery and new mining methods that may have a direct effect upon the extent of exposure to airborne dust experienced by persons mining coal. Anthracite Mines The survey covered 169 anthracite mines that were operating from November 1, 1953, to July 1, 1954. It showed that large mines employing more than 100 men were doing most to control dust produced during mining.

Education and training research is a major component of the Bureau of Mines human factors research program. The goal of human factors research is to enhance human performance for the purpose of improving both safety and the profitability of the minerals industries. This is achieved through the design of mining equipment, work tasks, management procedures, and development of human resources. This proceedings volume presents several new developments that are helping to improve the quality and efficiency of health, safety, and occupational skills training in the mining community. Several papers address the issue of how to teach and assess miner abilities to deal with underground mine emergencies. Other papers examine practical procedures for defining and cost justifying the integration of structured training and other performance improvement strategies to enhance the proficiency of the work system.

The maximum net return from the sale of ores and concentrates of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc accrues to the producer when these mine products are marketed to the best advantage. Data are presented that the producer, especially the small mine operator, can use to survey available markets and make a preliminary estimate of the net return to be expected from an ore, on the basis of typical mill, smelter, and freight schedules. A review of the industry is presented by States in which recent production statistics are given, marketing facilities are discussed, and locations of principal mining districts, custom mills, and smelters are shown. Explanations of treatment processes, ore types, treatment charges, payments for metals, and deductions are given. Published rail and truck freight rates for mine products, based on marketing patterns developed over many years, are listed and explained.

In the summer of 1979 the University of Minnesota Mobile Laboratory (UMML), designed for the analysis of airborne particles and gases was used to study fugitive dust from an open pit coal mine. The analysis consisted of determining the particle size distribution and concentration of dust from various mining operations, such as blasting, draglines, loading, roadways and bottom scrapers. For some operations the particles size distribution and concentrations were determined at varying distrances. Details of the dust concentration within the plumes as the plume passed the UMML were measured with an optical particle counter. For line sources, such as roadways this enabled the calculation of the particle flux at the sampling location. In addition to the standard instruments associated with the UMML, the applicability of some new instruments were investigated. These included a uniform deposit cascade impactor and a flux meter. Finally, a technique in identifying plume origins which utilized elemental X-ray flourescence analysis of filter samples was shown to be effective.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they arc required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brakes" by G. E . Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:
