"Bell Creek Mill which has been in continuous operation since 1987 has undergone numerous operational changes in the past three years. The addition of over 2. 5 million tons of resource at over 13 git from Hoyle Pond Mine precipitated an expansion program for the Bell Creek Mill. This paper discusses the major changes that have occurred over the past two years to increase throughput and efficiencies. In addition, the refractory ore treatment options are also discussed.IntroductionThe Bell Creek Mill is located in the Timmins Goldcamp approximately 8km NE of porcupine Ontario. (Fig I.)The mill was originally constructed by Camamax in 1987 to treat the Bell Creek ore at a design throughput of 350tpd. The flowsheet (Fig 2.) consisted of two stage crushing, grinding, thickening, leach and drum filtration with gold recovery by Merrill Crowe.As ore depleted at Bell Creek, the Mill was purchased by Falconbridge to process ore from their Hoyle Pond property. Kinross purchased the Hoyle Pond property and Bell Creek Mill from Falconbridge in 1992.The successful exploration program at Hoyle Pond has led to several expansions and process design changes, with further changes planned over the next twelve months.In 1994, the mine produced 61,865 oz. of gold at an average cost of 197US$ per oz. In 1995 production was 91, 611 oz. at a cost of 187US$ per oz. Projecting the nine months ended September 30, production for 1996 will be 155,000 oz. at a cost of 165US$ per oz.In early 1997, the CIP expansion will be complete, with a target of 175,000 oz. at a cost of 176US$ per oz for 1997. The mill throughput will have increased from 400tpd to 1500tpd between 1994 and 1997.The changes to Bell Creek since 1994 have been numerous with very little of the existing equipment still in operation. The total cost of the expansion to date is 15 million C$. This paper discusses the major projects carried out during in this time. The focus will be to highlight the justification of each project, the design and engineering, some of the initial start-up problems and solutions.Figure 3 shows a plan of the existing mill facility together with the various additions that were carried out."

"Open pit mines can produce large disturbances within regional hydrogeologic systems. The degree of disturbance and the consequences on the local environment depend on the size of the pit and on the physical setting of the mine. Comparisons and contrasts are presented for three Noranda base metal open pit mine sites.The Brunswick Mining and Smelting No 6 open pit has a surface area of 11 ha and a depth of 185 m. It is located within complexly deformed schists and meta-volcanic rocks. The massive sulphide and iron formations visible along the north and southwest walls of the pit generate acid drainage. Mining ceased in 1983, and the pit is presently being filled with waste rock and neutralized drainage water. Water balance calculations estimated a total fill up time of sixteen years. As the water level rises, leakage to groundwater could take place across a fault zone intersecting the pit.The Mattabi Mines F-Group pit has a surface area of approximately 3 ha and a depth of 50 m and is also set in meta-volcanic rocks and acid generating iron formations. Production at this site ceased in 1982, and the low pH pit water is neutralized and pumped into a nearby lake at least every five years. Major water inflows are from precipitation and groundwater. Groundwater mounds within adjacent high land surrounding the pit provide a natural hydraulic barrier to groundwater flow, except for the southeast side. As a consequence, the pit water elevation is being kept below the elevation of the nearby creek in which some of the pit water could drain.The Bell Copper open pit covers an area of 40 ha and is 270 m deep. With present ore reserves, the mine might be in operation until 1992. The geology around the pit consists of andesitic tufts, siltstones and shales, and the acid generation potential of the rock is relatively low. A recent hydrogeological study estimated fill up time by precipitation and groundwater to be in the order of 260 years.With increasingly more stringent requirements for mine closure, it is anticipated that more detailed hydrological and hydrogeological studies of open pits will be required to determine post-closure environmental impacts and the suitability of open pits for mine waste disposal."

Incorporated in 1957 under the laws of the Province of Quebec, Quebec Cartier Mining Co. undertook the development of its low-grade iron ore reserves located at Lac Jeannine in the southwest extremity of the Quebec-Labrador trough. This challenge comprised the construction of a 200-mile access road, two towns, a 191-mile-long railroad from Port Cartier to Lac Jeannine, a hydro-electric generating plant on the Hart Jaune River, and mining, crushing, concentrating and ancillary facilities to support a yearly production of 8.0 million tons of iron ore concentrates at 66% Fe. In order to meet increasing market demands for iron ore concentrates concurrently with the depletion of its Lac Jeannine reserves , Quebec Cartier announced, late in 1969, the first step toward bringing into production a new iron ore deposit, known as Mount Wright, located 70 air miles northeast of Lac Jeannine and 25 miles southwest of Labrador City, Newfoundland. In September 1970, the company announced its decision to develop and bring into production its Mount Wright reserves at an annual rate of 1 8.4 million dry long tons. The scope of this project included the construction of an access road linking the mine, the new town and Labrador City, Newfoundland, the extension of the railroad by some 86 miles, the construction of an ore concentrating plant with all the ancillary facilities, the development: of the mine, the construction of a pourer transmission line and a new town adjacent to Lake Daviault. The Mount Wright story is divided into five individual papers covering: (a) the history and development of the project; (b) the mine; (c) plant control by a process computer; (d) crushing, grinding and concentrating; and (e) the townsite of Fermont.

Due to difficulties associated with gripping in direct tension, indirect methods are commonly used to measure rock tensile strength. In this work, we adopt an innovative indirect tensile test method: Semi-Circular Bend (SCB) to measure the tensile/flexural strength of Laurentian granite (LG). The static tests are carried out with a servo-controlled material testing machine and the dynamic tests are conduced with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. Pulse shaping technique is adopted to achieve dynamic force equilibrium in SHPB to facilitate data regression. Finite element method is used to relate the failure load to the tensile strength. Strong rate dependence of the tensile strength is observed. The flexural strength is higher than the tensile strength measured using Brazilian Disc (BD). This difference is rationalized using the non-local theory. To further validate the method, a coupled Finite element/Discrete element method (Fem/Dem) in conjunction with the smeared crack model is utilized to simulate the fracture process during dynamic SCB tests. The resulting fracture patterns are qualitatively consistent with those from recovered samples. Both the experimental and numerical methods have validated the results and this new method is readily to be used for other rocks and other brittle materials.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. "This paper deals with the repairs made on two damaged mills. It investigates briefly the causes of the damage, explain its nature and the design of the repair. It explains the detrimental effect on operation and the solutions implemented to reduce them. Finally, to review the follow-up required for such repairs. LOCATIONThe Holt McDermott Mine is located 75 kilometers Northeast of Kirkland Lake and 30 kilometres west of the Quebec border in Northeastern Ontario. The town of Kirkland Lake is located approximately 500 kilometres north of Toronto. HISTORYThe discovery of gold in Holloway Township dates back to early 1920. In 1984 Barrick Resources, which amalgamated with Camflo Mines, acquired more claims on the property and initiated an extensive drilling program. By 1985, the drills indicated reserve increased to 2,500,000 tonnes grading 6.8 g/mt. In 1986 a production decision was made and in 1988 the mine was officially opened.As of December 31, 1998, 4,691,507 tonnes grading 5,66 g/tonnes have been milled from 4 ore-bodies. The mill started up in June 1988."

AS THE LOCAL electric generating plants increased in size and capacity and costs of producing electricity came down, it became apparent that it was no longer good economy to operate individual boiler plants at the Company's various collieries to power steam hoists and compressors. Great economies could be made by burning the Coal at central power plants and using electric power at the collieries. During the period after the end of the war, a steady and continuing programme of replacing first the smaller steam-driven units, and later the steam-driven compressors, was undertaken, and finally the larger hoists, those at No. 12 Colliery in New Waterford and No. 20 Colliery in Glace Bay, were the last units operated by steam.

"Kinross’ Paracatu Mine has 20 years of operational success as one of the lowest grade milloperated gold mines in the world. At year end 2005, Paracatu’s Proven and Probable Reserves were 1.18 billion tonnes at a grade of 0.40 g/t Au, containing a total of 15.2 million ounces of gold.In 2005, the plant processed 17 Mt of ore and produced 180,519 ounces of gold at a cash cost of US$274/oz. An investment of US$470 million has been approved to expand production to 61 Mtpa in 2009 which will extend mine life to 2036. During the period from 2009 to 2013 the project is expected to produce an average annual output of approximately 557,000 ounces of gold at an average cost of sales of approximately $230 per ounce.The soft, friable ore containing readily leachable gold associated with sulphides lends itself to simple processing. The process flowsheet consists of crushing, grinding, gravity recovery, flotation, concentrate leach and carbon adsorption to produce bullion bars. This paper describes the current operation, the deposit’s unique metallurgical features and the future expansion plant that has been designed to optimise recovery of gold.INTRODUCTIONRio Paracatu Mineração (RPM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kinross Gold Corporation, operates the Paracatu mine. The mine is located in Brazil, 230 km south west of Brasilia in the north west portion of the State of Minas Gerais. The city of Paracatu, which has a population of 83,000 people, is just 2 km south of the mine."

"Taseko Mines Limited recommenced operation of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine in 2004 and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3) project included a second stand-alone copper-molybdenum concentrator, a stand-alone molybdenum separation plant and associated services. Ausenco was contracted to commence the detailed design in 2Q2011, commissioning commenced in 4Q2012 and first ore was processed in 1Q2013. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the GDP3 Concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Gibraltar Mine (Gibraltar) property is located in the Cariboo Region of south central British Columbia, approximately 360 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. The site is accessed via an 18 kilometer paved road from the town of McLeese Lake, which is located on the province’s main north-south highway between the cities of Williams Lake and Quesnel. Gibraltar was originally developed by Placer Development and commenced production in 1972. Gibraltar was acquired, while on care and maintenance, by Taseko Mines Limited (Taseko) in 1999 during a period of unusually low metal prices. Taseko recommenced operations at Gibraltar in 2004, and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The 1972 Gibraltar process flowsheet incorporated two-stage crushing followed by rod and ball milling and flotation. In 2008 Gibraltar completed their first development stage that included the installation of a SAG mill, converting the existing rod mills to ball mills and adding additional flotation capacity. Gibraltar continued development with the installation of an in-pit primary crusher, expansion of the bulk regrind circuit, expansion of the cleaner flotation circuit, replacement of the tailings pumping system and replacement of the concentrate filters and dryer."

"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. Slim hole bit performance and cost all compared for overall bit averages as part of analysis."

"This paper details the process followed to raise drill and equip a 6.1 metre diameter vertical service shaft at Glencore’s Mindola Deeps project in Kitwe, Copperbelt Province, Zambia. The project scope comprises a shaft collar, bulk air intake, a pre-sink to -90 metres and raise drilling the shaft from surface to a final depth of 1,892 metres underground, in four separate lifts of approximately 475 metres each. Equipping of the shaft steelwork, headframe erection and commissioning the shaft for hoisting. In addition, the scope included the development of a decline down from 5430’ level underground to the new shaft position on 6205’ level. This paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during execution of the shaft works to date and provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The Mindola Mine is situated to the west of the city of Kitwe in the Copperbelt Province of the Republic of Zambia (Figure 1). The mine is owned and operated by Mopani Copper Mines Plc (MCM), whose shareholders are Glencore AG (73.1%), First Quantum (17.9%) and ZCCM Holdings Plc (10%).Productivity at the Mindola mine has been adversely affected because of significant ventilation and ore re-handling challenges, which are caused by the dilapidated infrastructure, and design of the existing vertical and sub vertical shaft system. In the circumstances, it was apparent that it was necessary to sink a new vertical shaft that would increase the volume of fresh air down the mine, improving the underground working environment and the current hoisting restrictions, resulting in an increase in productivity and efficiency. Because there were two existing levels ideally situated and perpendicular to one another and because a third level was in close proximity to that perpendicular and because the mine required a ramp down to shaft bottom in any event, consideration was given to raise drilling the shaft as opposed to using conventional blind sinking methodologies."

"This paper describes the engineering and construction activities of the ""design-build"" project awarded to the joint venture of Foundation-Comstock-Janin for the construction of the plant and wharf facilities, camp site, power plant and all supporting services. As a member of the Foundation Group of companies at that time, Fenco actecl as consulting and design engineers for the project. Particular emphasis is given to the problems which adversely affected design and construction activities due to prevailing arctic conditions and the remote location of the project. The paper also describes the approach taken in the investigation of the site and soil conditions as well as the selection of the special structures for the 225,000-toncapacity fibre storage building, the wharf structure for 50,000-dwt vessels, and the 1,000-tph-capacity reclaiming and ship-loading facilities . "This paper describes the bench testing, pilot plant studies of alternative flowsheets, to determine the feasibility of gold recovery, by carbon in pulp extraction, in the Schumacher Mill gold flotation tailings. The economics were calculated based on pilot plant recoveries and actual industry operating costs.The economics of the carbon in pulp treatment of the gold flotation tailings were not justifiable. The economics of desliming the gold flotation tailings followed by carbon in pulp treatment were marginal, but favourable. INTRODUCTIONPamour Porcupine Mines, Limited is a gold, silver and copper producer located in Timmins, Ontario. In 1983 the head grade of Pamour's gold ores averaged nine one hundredths of a troy ounce of gold per short ton.Pamour operates two area mills to concentrate the gold ores. Free milling gold ores are processed at the Pamour One Mine mill, whereas the refractory carbonaceous gold ores, and complex gold, silver, and copper sulphide ores, are processed through the Schumacher Mine mill.The complex Schumacher mill feed ores do not all react favourably to flotation methods, consequently this study was commissioned to investigate the feasibility of the carbon in pulp cyanidation of the Schumacher mill gold flotation tailings. These tailings contain ten to fifteen percent of the gold in the mill feed. During the study period, the average grade of the Schumacher mill flotation tailings was nine one thousandths of a troy ounce of gold per ton, or one quarter of a gram of gold per metric tonne."

Advocate Mines Limited came into initial production on June 30, 1963, with an annual capacity in excess of 60,000 tons of high-quality chrysotile asbestos fihres, thus strengthening Canada's position in world production. The history of this development is traced from discovery through initial exploration, financing, orebody delineation and evaluation, pilot-plant production and product evaluation, construction of the plant, construction of deep?-sea shipping facilities, provision for a closed shipping season, and provision for the remoteness and for the lack of services, through to realization of full production capacity. The many unique aspects of the project are given special attention, particularly in the light of the first year of full-capacity operation. The marketing of the products in a highly competitive world market is reviewed, with special emphasis on product evaluation, quality control and the shipping of high-quality products to consumers throughout the world. Project Environmental Approval is a multi-faceted issue. From a mining perspective, it is a costly item because of avoidable time delay. The government perspective is that the approvals are a necessary part of meeting departmental requirements to ensure that the wellbeing of other uses of the environment is maintained. This paper outlines some of the problems inherent in the environmental approvals process and makes recommendations to both the proponent and government about improving the efficiency of the process.

Newmont acquired the Phoenix Project through the acquisition of Battle Mountain Gold in 2000. Shortly after the acquisition, Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) and Nevada Operations began development work on a process to Pressure Oxidize (PDX) precious metal rich copper concentrates from Phoenix using the Lone Tree PDX facilities at Valmy, Nevada. The high precious metals content of the Phoenix concentrate - Au up to -300 g/t and especially Ag, up to -1700 g/t - led Newmont to the development of a High Temperature PDX process that achieves high cyanide leach recovery of Au and Ag, from the PDX solids, without the requirement for a messy and expensive "lime boil" or sulphate destruction process. Base metals content in Phoenix concentrates range from: 15-25 % for Cu, 1-10 % for Zn and 0-2 % for Pb. Excellent solution extraction of Cu and Zn is achieved while Pb is precipitated in the PDX residue. In addition to achieving high Au and Ag recovery this process produces very clean PDX discharge liquors that require minimum effort to remove contaminant metals and PDX solids that have superior settling and filtration characteristics. All of these factors contribute to lower capital and operating costs for the overall process. This paper describes the laboratory and PDX pilot plant developments for this process.

"The slurry density (pulp percentage of solids) and the size of the grinding media are often used for the optimization of an operating ball mill. In many cases a change of ball size is made at the slurry density used with the original ball size. But is the optimum slurry density changing with grinding media size? Laboratory grinding tests were conducted to answer that question and results indicate that more than likely there is no need to adjust mill slurry density when adjusting the size of a grinding media in a ball mill. Full scale behaviour could be different because slurry density affects the slurry transportation through the mill and the classifier operation.INTRODUCTIONOre preparation begins with a fragmentation step that liberates valuable minerals or exposes mineral surface to the environment. The size reduction step of a mineral processing operation is energy demanding and the optimisation of this process should always be an objective for the plant metallurgists. Various approaches could be considered for improving the operation of a grinding circuit. For a close grinding circuit an adequate tuning of the classifiers operation may lead to substantial savings (McIvor, 1988). Once a grinding mill is in operation, few variables remain to be considered for process optimization. The ball charge is usually maintained to achieve a target power drawn by the grinding mill motor. The rotation speed is seldom considered (McIvor, 1983; Bazin and Lavoie, 2000) as a change of mill speed usually implies a costly pinion change. If the liner and lifter configuration is critical for SAG and AG mills (Latchireddi et al., 2005), few discussions are available for ball mills (Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 1985; McIvor, 1983). The mill feed size distribution can also be adjusted but this implies changing the upstream processes, which transposes the optimization process to another level. Modification to grinding media shape is a possible avenue (Cooper et al., 1994), but it remains that slurry density and grinding media size are probably the most frequently considered variables for the optimization of a ball mill."

Experimental Mine, Val d'Or, Quebec, Experiments on the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives have been conducted in a 1 m3 explosion chamber. The explosives tested are ANFO, emulsion, aluminized emulsion and Detasheet. By controlling the composition of the ANFO and the emulsion explosive the oxygen balance could be changed in order to identify the dominant factors in the ignition of sulphide dust clouds by explosives. Experimental results, combined with theoretical calculations, show that the temperature of the detonation products is the most important parameter in the ignition of the dust cloud while the combustible detonation products are of secondary importance in the case of non-aluminized mining explosives. In the case of aluminized explosives and explosives having very negative oxygen balance the ignition of the dust cloud is assisted by the large amount of combustible detonation products.

Why A Friction Hoist? B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute.
