The dissolution of low-iron sphalerite, (Zn,Fe)S containing 0.08% Fe, in ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid media was investigated using closely sized fractions of crushed sphalerite crystals and sintered disks made from the crushed crystals. Linear kinetics are observed, and the predominant reaction products are ZnSO4, FeSO4 and elemental sulphur. The leaching rate increases systematically with increasing temperature, and the calculated apparent activation energy is 56 kJ/mol for the sized sphalerite and 54 kJ/mol for the sintered disks. The relatively high apparent activation energy suggests that the rate is chemically controlled, a conclusion supported by the insensitivity of the rate to the disk rotation speed. The rate increases as the 0.22 power of the Fe(SO4)1.5 concentration, and as the 0.22 power of the H2SO4 concentration. However, in the absence of ferric ions, the rate increases more significantly with increasing H2SO4 concentrations, and relatively rapid rates are observed in solutions containing >0.5 M H2SO4. In 0.1 M Fe(SO4)1.5-0.3 M H2SO4 media, the measured rate decreases with increasing sulphate concentrations, added as Li2SO4. The rate of dissolution of low-iron sphalerite is promoted by dissolved copper concentrations as high as 800 mg/L. In contrast, dissolved silver, even in the 0-2 mg/L concentration range, significantly retards the dissolution of the low-iron sphalerite.

Off-gas systems often become the limiting factor in production increase and environmental projects. Any upgrade or new off-gas project needs to address control instability issues, instabilities that can result in safety hazards, significant loss of system capacity and/or emissions to the environment [1]. In addition, the design engineer must optimize system configuration and equipment size for the new operating conditions, to have a technically feasible and economically viable project. Dynamic simulations can be used for addressing both the control stability and the design optimization issues. This paper illustrates how the dynamic simulation of transient processes and of their control system can be used in "real life" situations for these purposes, presenting the example of an electric furnace off-gas system design.

This paper describes basic parameters, such as surface forces and film elasticity, affecting the stability of foams (two-phase froths). We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique to measure the surface forces in foam films stabilized with various frothers such as pentanol, octanol, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), and polypropylene glycol (PPG). The results were compared with the foam stabilities measured experimentally and the film elasticities calculated using a new model developed by Wang and Yoon (2006). It was found that at low electrolyte (NaCI) concentrations foam stability is controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces (or disjoining pressure), the relative contributions from each changing with frother type and concentration. Further, the kinetics of film thinning was studied at a high electrolyte concentration. The results obtained in the present work showed that the major role of a frother is to decrease the hydrophobic force rather than to increase the film elasticity. This conclusion is drawn from the observation that at the typical frother (MIBC) concentrations employed in flotation, frother additions cause sharp decreases in hydrophobic force while causing relatively little changes in film elasticity.

A significant problem in ultrafine particle classification is the significant amount of submicron particle by-pass to the coarse particle stream. In classifying cyclones, submicron particle by-pass to the underflow stream can be reduced by decreasing water recovery. Past studies have shown that a reduction can be realized when the feed solids concentration is increased or the apex diameter is reduced. However, both adjustments tend to increase the particle size cut point and negatively affect classification efficiency due to the impact on slurry rheology. The addition of a viscosity modifier to the feed stream of a classifying cyclone improved the classification performance and decreased the particle size cut point over a range of feed solids concentrations. The detailed test program investigated the use of the modifier in conjunction with varying apex diameters to identify conditions that minimize ultrafine by-pass. With small apex sizes, roping conditions were readily eliminated by the addition of viscosity modifiers. The addition of the modifier had no deleterious effect on froth flotation performance, which commonly serves as a downstream separation process. The fundamental and practical benefits of viscosity modifiers in classification processes are discussed in this publication.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. General Statement In July, 1948, experimental aerial photography o shallow water zones on Northumberland strait was carried out by the Nova Scotia Research Foundation. This work was designed to test the feasibility of aerial photography for coastal surveys o various types, including seaweed and bottom detail surveys. In the course of the work at Lismore, undersea faulting was noted visually and was later clearly apparent in the photographs. In order to prove beyond doubt that the lineations photographed are actually faults, a ground check was made, and terrestrial stereoscopic photographs were obtained of these features where they intersect the shore line. There can be no doubt of their nature, and the type of faulting is probably thrusting due to compressive forces. This is indicated by the successive right- and left-hand displacements on intersecting faults. The age of the fracturing is post Lower-Pennsylvanian (Lismore) and is correlated with similar compression faulting in western Cape Breton. As far as can be ascertained, this is the first time that subsea faulting has been photographed, though it is quite possible that similar structures have been observed elsewhere. Location and Area Lismore is on Northumberland strait, approximately thirty-five miles east of Pictou (see index map, Figure 1). The area mapped from aerial photographs (Figure 2) is a strip approximately two miles long by a quarter of a mile wide. Figure 3 shows a stereo-pair of the aerial photographs used to construct this map. The terrestrial stereoscopic photographs (Figure 4) show one of the faults.

"Significant energy savings are often possible for centrifugal compressors operating in parallel by improved control strategy and improved instrumentation. Blow-off can usually be reduced by improved surge control combined with a better control strategy for loading and unloading the group of machines. More precise and stable pressure control then becomes possible. This improved control strategy will also decrease the frequency of operation near the dangerous limits of surge or overload or overspeed. A sample station of mixed centrifugal and reciprocating compressors is examined and a substantial energy saving with the recommended control strategy is projected from operating data. I) in the non-productive shift (midnight to 8:00 a.m.), the consumption stays at a level of 9,000 SCFM. This corresponds to a pressure of 110 PSIG. Then, after 8:00 a.m ., the air consumption starts to increase and th e pressure decreases. Around 10:00 a.m., the consumption reaches its maximum level at 97 PSIG. Around II :30 a.m., the air consumption starts to decrease because of the production drop during the lunch break of the first shift. Pressure increases again up to 109 PSIG. After the break, consumption rises to its maximum level over 16,000 SCFM andpressure drops to 97 PSIG.Around 2:30 p.m., the air consumption drops sharply to 9,000 SCFM because of the production decrease to zero level. This drop results from changing of shifts. The pressure at this time increases again up to 110 PSIG. The second shift (2:30 to II :30 p.m.) is an alogous to the first.During the three-shift operating day, the break around 4:00 . a.m . and the shift change around 6:30 a.m. cause sharp drops in air consumption. The pressure for almost the entire night shift stays near 110 PSIG because the station is working with blowing-off even under the maximum consumption. The analysis of Figures I and 2 shows that the pressure varies with the air consumption changes. During non -productive time (non-production shifts , shift changes and breaks) or during the night shift, the total station capacity is proportional to the discharge pressure. "THE MISSION TO Offshore Scotland was in my opinion a very worthwhile venture, as it indicated the scope of the offshore oil and gas business and how we might exploit it to the fullest here in Nova Scotia - if our offshore fields eventually become producing fields. The writer was able to attend a considerable number of lectures and as a result gained some valuable know-how on the engineering design, financing and operation of the North Sea oil industry. There are many new fields of technology that had to be developed to overcome the North Sea's hostile environment and a great deal of the same technology will have to be developed to win oil and gas from our continental shelf. The visit left me with several impressions, which in the main are:(1) The high order of investment required to develop offshore oil. The investment ranges from 10 to 20 times that required for a similar output on land. Each barrel of oil costs on the average of about $2,- 500 per barrel per day.(2) Because of the high investments required, before the first oil is produced the field must be brought into production at the earliest possible date and initial lead time from decision to production is less than four years. In the British Petroleum field, working at a depth of 450 feet will require an investment of $900,000,000 to develop a production of 400,000 bbl per day. (3) The size and complexity of equipment required is beyond anything ever imagined. Problems which must be overcome are such factors as water depth, wind velocities, wave height, wave period, long periods of darkness, low temperatures, distance from land, and fog."

UV-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and vibrating tube densimetry have been used in our laboratory to determine equilibrium constants of aqueous species at temperatures as high as 325 °C. The UV-visible and Raman spectra of solutions containing metal complexes and ionized acids or bases can be used to yield formation constants by applying curve fitting methods to resolve the contribution of each species. Colorimetric pH indicators identified by Johnston and coworkers at the University of Texas (Austin) provide an alternative means of determining ionization constants and the pH of complex mixtures. High precision density measurements over the same range yield standard partial molar volumes, which are key parameters for "equations of state" for aqueous species. Examples are given for the copper-ammonia system, simple carboxylic acids, and the iron-sulphate system.

Stellite-6 coatings were formulated on two Ni-base superalloys, namely Superni 75 and Superni 600, by a shrouded plasma-spray process, and the oxidation behaviour of these coatings has been investigated in air and in an aggressive environment of Na2SO4- 60%V2O5. Accelerated oxidation tests were conducted in a silicon-carbide tube furnace under cyclic conditions at an elevated temperature of 900°C for 50 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating and 20 min cooling in air. A thermogravimetric technique was used to approximate the oxidation kinetics. The corrosion scales were characterised by XRD, SEM/EDAX and EPMA analysis. It has been observed that the coatings nearly followed the parabolic rate law of oxidation. Overall weight gain conceived in air was just 51% of that in the aggressive environment in the case of coated Superni 75, whereas in case of coated Superni 600, the cumulative weight gain in air was found to be one-third of that in the Na2SO4-60% V2O5 atmosphere. Furthermore, the coating showed very good adherence to both of the substrates during the course of air oxidation, whereas some superficial cracks were observed near the edges of the specimens during the molten salt induced oxidation. XRD analysis revealed the presence of phase-like CoO, CoCr2O4 and Cr2O3 in the oxide scales, which are reported be protective against high-temperature oxidation. The XRD results were further supported by SEM/EDAX and EPMA.

"The stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a netzsch™ lME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic, goethitic, and saprolitic nickel laterites. Tests on the -2,000 µm sample displayed the effects of selective comminution. The -38 µm product of grinding the -2,000/+38 µm feed confirmed the effects of selective grinding and nickel upgrading. Size classification followed by stirred milling is recommended for nickel upgrading. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was also investigated.RÉSUMÉ le broyage par billes de latérites comportant du nickel offre des possibilités d’amélioration de la libération et de la réduction sélective de la taille des minéraux nickélifères tendres dans les latérites. Des essais de broyage en vrac ont été effectués dans un broyeur à billes netzschMD lME4 sur des latérites nickélifères à goethite siliceuse, à goethite et saprolitiques. Des essais sur l’échantillon -2000 µm présentaient des effets d’une comminution sélective. le produit -38 µm de l’alimentation -2000/+38 µm confirme les effets d’un broyage sélectif et du rehaussement de la teneur en nickel. This paper describes studies of zinc concentrate oxidizing pressure leaching using the method of mathematical modeling. The concept of a kinetic function was taken as a basis for mathematical modeling of the leaching process. The kinetic function describes dependence of the unreacted component share OJ on the relative time x (the relative time is the ratio of the test duration and the time of complete dissolution). This kinetic function is determined in accordance with the results of batch laboratory tests. The laboratory tests have been carried out on zinc concentrate produced from Kazakhstan zinc-copper ores. Zinc concentrate consisted mainly of three types of minerals: sphalerite (70%), pyrite (13%) and chalcopyrite (10%). Oxidation reactions of sphalerite, pyrite and chalcopyrite have been considered as principal ones. The kinetic characteristics of the process (kinetic function, reaction order, activation energy, duration of complete dissolution of the concentrate components) have been calculated in the course of laboratory tests. The mathematical model was used for estimation of the main technological leaching process parameters (such as process rate, degree of metals extraction, autoclave capacity, heat balance, etc.). Mathematical modeling based on the kinetic function concept allows safe designing of metallurgical equipment and scaling the technology to industrial capacity.

THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a family of dry magnetic concentrators which, when used in conjunction with a dry grinding mill such as an Aero-fall mill, will allow the production of a completely dry magnetite concentrate. Previous experience with extrusion of iron ore and with pelletizing of fine iron concentrates suggested that it might be possible to develop a method particularly suited to the agglomeration of completely dry concentrates which might have some practical advantages over other methods of agglomeration. Pelletizing is the preferred method of agglomerating very fine iron ore concentrates. Magnetite concentrate is fod to the pelletizing equipment in the form of a moist filter cake. Binders and plasticizers may be added if necessary, and the moisture content must be increased or adjusted to the percentage necessary to give good balling action and satisfactory green strength in the resulting moist pellets. The moist ore with a closely controlled water content of about 7 to 12 per cent moisture may be rolled into pellets by a snow-balling action in a pelletizing drum, a Lurgi pan, or a Mac-Dowell disc pelletizer. The resulting green pellets are fired by one of several alternative processes to produce a hard pellet which has sufficient strength to withstand handling and shipping.

Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. In case of a damage the blisk aerofoils cannot be simply replaced. If the damage is beyond acceptance or blending limits refurbishment is possible only by scrapping the whole blisk assembly, or more cost effective by the application of advanced weld repair methods. Weld repair of blisk aerofoils is challenging as it affects a critical part with specific requirements regarding its mechanical integrity, and as the accessibility is usually limited. The paper describes the ongoing development of advanced weld repair processes as part of a comprehensive repair strategy which have been developed for small-sized blisk assembly to give competitive maintenance cost.

"One of the most important phases in Canada's relatively rapid development of its metal mining and refining industries was launched in 1928 when the directors of Noranda Mines Limited decided to establish an electrolytic copper refinery ""somewhere in Eastern Canada”. Noranda's president, J.Y. Murdoch, had already evolved the company's ""mine to market"" policy and was determined to prove the economic feasibility of refining Noranda copper in Canada. The time appeared to be ripe as buoyant business conditions continued into 1929. In addition, proven ore reserves at the Horne Mine in northwest Quebec had virtually tripled and the price of copper had reached a healthy 15 cents per pound. Letters Patent incorporating the company bearing the date February 6, 1929 had been granted by the Secretary of State in accordance with an application that specified a capital structure of $2 million divided into 20 000 shares with a value of $100 each. Noranda assumed 70% of the original investment in the proposed refinery, while the Nicholas Copper Company of New York (which later became Phelps Dodge Corporation) and British Metal Corporation Ltd. of London, England, each were responsible for 15%. Nicholas Copper Company agreed to supply the design and to supervise the construction of the refinery and British Metal Corporation would act as sales agent and market the refinery's products."

In presenting this paper for discussion at the Western Annual Meeting to be held in Edmonton, it is with the idea of creating a full and general discussion by the mining men in the Province as to the best way to eliminate, or at least hold down to a minimum, the dangerous coal-dust which is made in mining pitching seams in our Alberta mines by the chute method. Also, an alternative method is outlined, whereby the percentage of lump-coal mined can be increased, and the mining costs reduced-although the paper does not go into any detailed consideration of costs. The general trend of mining practice and lay-outs is at present towards mechanization, and the results being accomplished by the substitution of machines for manual labour are fully justifying the changes. In the technical mining journals, there are published from time to time papers dealing with a variety of methods of mining, which are descriptions of actual operations, and a great deal of interesting and valuable data is given as to the comparative values of the different methods, insofar as the percentage of grades of coal produced, the cost of production, etc., are concerned; but the mechanical methods described in these papers are nearly always suitable only for flat seams, or seams with a very low inclination.

It often happens that the field geologist encounters a fault in ground where there is little to guide him with regard to the throw, or vertical displacement, and the heave, or horizontal displacement. The following construction gives both of these components of the fault, and the writers hope that it may prove a help to others. The construction is applicable to both normal and reversed faults. Briefly the procedure is as follows: Take a point which is common to the faulted geological feature and to the fault plane and on the downthrow side of the fault. Move this point in the horizontal plane in the direction indicated by the fault striæ. Rebat the point down to the plane of the fault and obtain its throw. Next consider the other side of the fault and truncate it down by the amount of the throw just determined. Then project the line of the geological feature through to the trace of the fault-plane at the lower horizon. The result is the relative positions of the two parts of the original geological feature as severed by the fault. In Figure r, let us consider a typical normal fault, that is, a fault in which the hanging-wall has gone down relative to the footwall. This characteristic, or its alternative, the reversed fault, is determined by observation on the ground. Let AB be the line of any geological feature such as the edge of a dyke, vein, or bedded sediment. The plane of which AB is the trace may have any dip; in the present case let us say 70° right. Let FF be the trace of a fault-plane which may have any dip; let us say 35° left in this case.

AKNOWLEDGE of the density of a pulp or suspension is frequently required by the millman, to whom fluctuations in density, which occur in all mill circuits, are of importance and interest. There ,are many w.ays currently in use to determine density and probably the most common method is to take samples of the pulp. The proper sampling of the material is no easy matter, particularly when the pulp contains a sand fraction which settles rapidly. For example, when filling a liter container from the overflow of a classifier, it is al-most impossible to fill the can completely and yet prevent overflow. If there is an overflow, the pulp remaining in the can invariably has an excess of sand and the indicated density will be too high. To surmount such difficulties, and to obtain a continuous indication of the density of a pulp at any desired depth, the simple indicator shown diagrammatically in Figure l was designed by the writer in 1951.
