"Terrestrial photogrammetry has been used for many years to build three-dimensional pictures for analytical purposes. Photographs can include images from open pit mine walls, ground topography, mine buildings infrastructure or accident scenes. Analysis and co-ordinate estimation in early photogrammetric systems demanded the use of specialized and costly optical-mechanical stereocomparators. Few of these instruments could be interfaced with computers to provide databases, and all required trained personnel with good perspective vision to collect data.Digital photogrammetric software has replaced these older systems, and the digital video plotter (DVP) is a simple computerized system utilizing readily available PCs to quickly produce a stereoscopic model of any scene where an area of overlap exists in photographs taken from two different locations. Specialized cameras providing reference marks or grids on the photographs are still necessary for detailed analysis in three dimensions.This paper describes the application of DVP to the three-dimensional analysis of strike, dip and location of dominant fracture planes visible on an open pit wall slope, and the intersection of planar features which might reduce wall stability. Where reference survey points cannot be provided because access by personnel to the photographic scene is impossible for safety reasons, normal case terrestrial photogrammetry can provide the necessary control points for more complex aerial photogrammetry geometries.DVP recreates the geometry existing at the moment photographs are taken, providing the user with the ability to safely recreate, compare and analyze the structures determining the stability of open pit wall slopes."

The Hat Creek coal deposit s occur within folded and faulted Tertiary (Eocene) strata of the Coldwater Group, which comprises weakly lithified shales, siltstones and conglomerates underlying the floor and lower flanks of the valley of Upper Hat Cr eek . This upland valley,16 miles in length and 2-4 miles in width, is located within the eastern foothills of the Coast Mountains, 120 miles northeast of Vancouver, approximately midway between the towns of Lillooet and Ashcroft, in the Interior Dry Belt of British Columbia . Most of the valley floor is covered by till and glacial outwash deposits ranging up to 500 feet in depth. Became of this overburden cover , the majority of the data on the coal deposit have been obtained from diamond drilling done during 1974?76 by the property owner, B .C. Hydro and Power Authority. Because of the limitations imposed by the lack of out crop, the Tertiary geology at Upper Hat Creek is imperfectly known; however, it appears from correlation with other coal-bearing Tertiary remnants in the southern interior of the province that these remnants, including Upper Hat Creek, may represent preserved segments of the western shoreline of a Tertiary continental sea along which deltaic swamps developed and were sustained for unusually long stable periods, giving rise to the world's thickest known coal beds.

"Indirect recovery and use of waste heat contained in smelter off-gas is proposed to expand regions available for year-round, on-site production of micro-algae–sourced biodiesel, a fuel that could be used in underground machinery. A dynamic model of an off-gas heat exchanger describes capture and distribution of heat into open, external, rectangular micro-algae ponds. Smelter off-gas contains sufficient energy to maintain large-scale micro-algae cultivation pond temperatures above 15°C, even with winter ambient temperatures below –15°C. Results highlight opportunities that could lie in tapping these heat resources to produce renewable biofuels on-site and sequester CO2 while leaving the industrial process unaffected.RÉSUMÉ On propose la récupération et l’utilisation indirectes de la chaleur résiduelle contenue dans les dégagements gazeux des fonderies pour développer les régions se prêtant à une production toute l’année durant et sur place de biodiesel à partir de micro-algues, carburant dont on pourrait se servir pour le matériel d’exploitation souterraine. Un modèle dynamique d’échangeur de chaleur contenue dans les dégagements gazeux décrit le captage et la distribution de la chaleur dans des bassins rectangulaires ouverts de micro-algues en extérieur. Les dégagements gazeux des fonderies contiennent suffisamment d’énergie pour maintenir les températures des grands bassins de culture de micro-algues au-delà de 15°C, même avec des températures ambiantes en hiver inférieures à –15°C. This biomass can be up to 50% oils (lipids), which can be extracted and converted into biodiesel through transesterification (Demirbas, 2008). Compared to terrestrial plants that produce similar oils (e.g., jatropha, soybean, and rapeseed), micro-algae represent an order of magnitude increase in areal productivity, do not require arable land, and can be continuously harvested (Rawat, Ranjith Kumar, Mutanda, & Bux, 2013). The potential advantages through the production of biodiesel from micro-algae also include sequestration of carbon dioxide, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and the co-production of other value-added bioproducts."

SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) is an in-situ oil recovery technique for heavy oil reservoirs. The technique has been successfully applied to many projects in the past 25 years and the process has been, now, well understood. It is now believed that geomechanics plays an important role in SAGD and should be considered in numerical or analytical modeling. Currently, geomechanics is numerically modeled through combining a multi-phase flow and a geomechanical simulator. Numerical modeling is, however, time consuming, need lots of input data, and could not be used for quick decision-making purposes. To decrease the modeling time, this study based on a new version of the Reis drainage model, proposes coupled mathematical model and reserves the effect of geomechanics in the process. Results showed a perfect match with the past experimental and numerical data.

"This paper briefly describes the surface mining operations at Smoky River Coal Limited (formerly McIntyre Mines Limited, Coal Division) near Grande Cache, Alberta. Geology, mining methods, equipment, manpower and reclamation and environment topics are discussed. Introduction Smoky River Coal Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of McIntyre Mines Limited of Calgary, Alberta, produces a high quality, low sulphur, low volatile bituminous coking coal from its minesite located at west central Alberta, approximately 20 km from the town of Grande Cache and 360 km west of Edmonton (Fig. I). Most of the coal property is contained within a 30 km long by 20 km wide block lying in a northwest-southeast direction in mountainous terrain. Elevations vary from 920 m above sea level ·at the plant·site on the Smoky River to 1,600 mat the upper levels of current and proposed mining operations. A total of 11 coal seams have been identified. Only two seams, No. 4 Seam and No. 10 Seam are currently considered of major commercial value. These seams are recovered by both surface and underground mining. Approximately 650Jo of the plant feed coal is obtained from a conventional shovel/truck surface mine; the balance is mined underground by room-andpillar methods. Background In 1921, McIntyre Mines Limited acquired some 26,300 hectares of coal leases at Smoky River. Since then the leases were explored intermittently by different companies including McIntyre. In the mid-l 960s exploration activities increased and several feasibility studies were completed. Development of the area was undertaken by McIntyre in 1968 and, in August of the same year, a long-term contract was signed with a consortium of Japanese steel mills for delivery of 2 x 106 t of clean coking coal for 15 years commencing in 1970. Production was focussed on underground mining, using longwall methods."

"BioteQ has successfully developed commercial operations for ARD treatment and selective metal recovery using the patented BioSulphide and Thiopaq® biological reduction technologies. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process was developed to provide biogenic sulphide for the selective recovery of high purity metal concentrates from acidic wastewater, which are sold to recover capital costs and off-set water treatment costs. The BioSulphide-Thiopaq process can be used on a stand-alone basis or in conjunction with a lime circuit. Process advantages include: selective recovery of metals, very low metal concentrations in effluent, reduced waste sludge liability, reduced lime treatment costs and, in some cases, profitable sale of metal concentrates. Two case studies are presented to illustrate operations focused on metal recovery at the Caribou Mine, New Brunswick, Canada, and at Phelps Dodge, Arizona. A third case study is presented to highlight environmental control as well as metal recovery for treatment of ARD at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec. Process flowsheets, capital and operating costs are presented for the three case studies.INTRODUCTIONProtection of water quality has become one of the most important environmental challenges facing the mining industry. Although new mining projects can be designed to minimize impacts to the environment, many existing and abandoned mining operations have water quality problems. The principal cause of water contamination is acid rock drainage (ARD), which is generated when residual sulphide minerals in waste rock, tailings and other mine components and products are exposed to air and water. These reactions can produce acidity and elevated concentrations of metals in drainage and seepage that can adversely affect surface and groundwater resources. To meet regulatory criteria for water quality in the receiving environment, many mine operators must consider treatment of mine water and other effluents prior to discharge."

The presence of xenon isotopes from in-situ spontaneous fission of short-lived Pu244 has been confirmed in Hadean detrital zircons from Western Australia. Hadean and meteoritic zircons can retain secondary overgrowths developed after primary cristalization at 3.97-3.94 Gyr. On the moon, the metal grain in sample 66095,78 is mantled by troilite, schreibersite and cohenite. High chlorine content FeCl2 is deposited around metallic FeNi. The magnitude of Pollonium-210 to Radon-222 on the Aristarchus plateau spectrum indicates a past greater activity. The Earth Moon system from Nb/Ta systematics is consistent with a Moon iron core delayed to 3,9 Gyr.

In 1971 the government of British Columbia issued a permit for the Island Copper Mine to commence disposal of 33,000 tons per day of mine tailings into Rupert Inlet, a marine fjord on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. There was considerable controversy surrounding the development, public hearings were held, and as a requirement of the permit the company was obliged to carry out a comprehensive environmental monitoring program. The results of this program provide a thorough assessment of the environmental impact of submarine tailings disposal over the 24-year life of the mine. Following closure in December, 1995, the monitoring program continued for three years to determine the extent of marine ecosystem recovery and re-colonization. It is apparent from the findings of the monitoring program that the mine tailings were dispersed more widely than was originally predicted. It is also clear that widespread heavy metal contamination has not materialized. In retrospect it appears that submarine tailings disposal has resulted in far less severe environmental impacts than if the alternative of land disposal had been adopted. This review highlights significant aspects of public policy decision-making, design of environmental monitoring programs, and questions of interpretation of monitoring program data.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. The Steering Committee, supported by McKinsey, conducts briefings with a range of gold producers to share its findings and to understand producers? perspectives on an industry-funded marketing campaign. The corrosion behaviour of Al-B4C metal matrix composites immersed in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03, 0.5 M K2SO4, and 3.5% NaC1 solutions was investigated. Effects of B4C particle volume fraction on the corrosion behaviour of composites were studied using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to study the surface morphology of the material before and after corrosion. Results show that all materials investigated are more corrosion resistant in 2500 ppm boron-containing H3B03 than in other solutions. No appreciable corrosion was observed in boric acid and sulfate solutions in contrast to an obvious pitting in NaC1 solution for both base alloy and composites. The preferential pitting sites are the interfaces of Al/Fe intermetallics for the base alloy, and the A1/B4C interfaces for the composites. Increasing the volume fraction of B4C particles in the composite decreases its corrosion resistance of Al-B4C composites.

The theory and practice of sampling of particulate material have been the focus of a continued attention on the part of the mining industry worldwide for almost a century now, because of its critical importance at all phases of a mining project, from exploration (bulk sampling, assaying) to production (grade control) and marketing (quality control). A powerful, complete theory was put together by P. Oy (1968 to i982), but its applications to gold ores have met with limited success to date, due to the inadequacy of its sampling variance and minimum sample mass determination formulae to the challenging case of gold ores. This paper presents a research project completed at Inco Exploration and Technical Services Inc., using a geostatistical approach, to shed light on the results of P.Gy's theory, and adapt them to the case of particulate gold ores. After a reminder of Gy's formulae and a simplified demonstration of the generic form of Gy's and more traditional formulae, an empirical approach, based on sampling experiments from four gold deposits, shows how Gy's formulae must be corrected to adjust to the case of gold ores. The generality of the results formula is then substantiated with a geostatistical analysis of the problem. A parameterized formula results, and indications are given on how to fit its parameters to experimental data. Application guidelines and charts to fit any case and budget are presented, along with a detailed practical example.

"All gold deposits within the Tisdale Group are spatially associated with carbonate alteration zones; however, not all carbonate alteration zones are host to gold mineralization.Within the komatiitic and magnesium tholeiitic volcanic rocks at the base of the Tisdale Group, discordant and stratabound carbonate alteration zones occur throughout. The alteration zones consist of a ferroan dolomite - quartz inner assemblage which is enveloped by calcite-quartz and an outer chlorite-rich subzone. Factors which control the distribution of carbonate alteration include joint systems, flow contacts, synvolcanic faults and bulk composition of the host rock.Two environments of carbonate alteration can be recognized: 1) The subsea-floor alteration zones developed within the volcanic rock succession where hydrothermal fluids did not discharge directly onto the sea floor. Insignificant gold production has come from this alteration environment. 2) Seafloor zones, which represent points of hydrothermal fluid discharge into the hydrosphere, are spatially associated with felsic volcanic rock complexes and are host to syngenetic, auriferous cherty dolomite.Carbonatized, magnesium tholeiitic basalts, which are host to the auriferous, cherty dolomite, are enriched in antimony (>0.35 ppm), boron (>30 ppm), gold (>5 ppb) and lithium (> 35 ppm), but are depleted in copper ( < 70 ppm), with respect to carbonatized basalts not associated with gold. Orerelated, altered komatiitic flows can be screened using gold (>5 ppb), lead(> 10 ppm), arsenic(> 70 ppm) and antimony (>1 ppm).The habit, petrographic characteristics and certain geochemical characteristics of the altered volcanic rocks suggest that the hydrothermal fluid was of sea-water origin."

As part of an initiative to improve value in mining, CEMI is developing a handbook on best practice in mine design. Various formats were examined, and of these, the wiki was selected as being most suitable. Being web-based, its global reach and capability of being continuously updated allows the wiki to evolve as new knowledge is generated, and to capture the diversity of experience of practitioners in the mining industry. While wikis have many advantages in terms of organizing content and searching, their ability to be edited by users is often seen as a negative characteristic for quality control. To ensure reliability of information content, author attribution, specific authorship models, and a peer review process have been implemented, in addition to the standard version tracking capability of wikis. The first phase of the project concentrates on topics related to underground hard rock mine design. The scope will be expanded to cover other aspects of mining as the project matures. Strategic partnerships with various organizations, such as the CIM, and CANMET, are being formed to provide a wide range of seed material to stimulate growth of the site. www.minedesignwiki.org

Introduction Within the last quarter of a century the Lake St. John-Saguenay valley has been converted from a quiet agricultural district to one of the important industrial centres in the Dominion. First there was the expansion -of the pulp and paper industry, and then, starting a little over ten years, ago, the development, in large .blocks, of the enormous hydro-electric power resources of the Saguenay river. Coincident with this power development, the world aluminum industry was rapidly expanding and looking for a new source of cheap power. This was found in the Saguenay valley-and so, in 1925, Arvida was established by the Aluminum Company of Canada as a location for one of the largest aluminum plants in the world. Arvida, an incorporated city comprising an area of some ten square miles, is ideally located on a more or less level plateau about 350 feet above the Saguenay river. Seldom has industry stepped boldly forth and carved out of Nature a community with full city status. The process usually goes through the steps of camp, village, town, and city, involving improper planning or lack of planning; all of which has been avoided at Arvida by starting out in the right way. While this community has only a population of approximately 2,000 at the present time, it is carefully planned for a population many times this figure. Streets, city parks, business and residential sections, have been definitely planned, and, with a City government, proper ordinances were passed at the beginning to ensure the building and maintenance of a model industrial community. As the crow flies, Arvida is about 35 miles due east of lake St. John, and 0 miles west of the St. Lawrence river at Tadoussac. From a shipping standpoint, it is well served by the Canadian National railways, with direct lines to Quebec and Montreal, and by ocean shipping facilities at Port Alfred, which is about 15 miles to the east on the Saguenay river and is served by the Roberval & Saguenay railway. The latter has interchange connections with the Canadian National at Arivda, and also operates a branch line into the city of Chicoutimi.

ABSTRACT Seismicity and rockburst problems in hard-rock mines negatively impact safety and profitability. The authors propose a design risk methodology as a relative risk assessment for underground excavations vulnerable to rockburst damage. It considers rock mass conditions relating to mininginduced stress, geological structure, rock mass properties, and mining influence. Application of the methodology to rockburst cases involving seismically active fault zones at the Craig mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, demonstrates that design changes can reduce exposure and economic risks. Mines with high geotechnical risk can use the design risk methodology to evaluate design alternatives as a risk management strategy.

CAN PRESENT TRENDS CONTINUE? Can population growth in the world keep going at the average rates of the last few decades, till, say, the year 2000? And beyond? At the same time, can we expect steady increases in mineral consumption per head, all over the world, as the living standards of many nations converge toward the living standards of North America? If they do converge? Does the total fund of world resources extend, with foreseeable techniques, to supplying the consequent demands for metals, non-metallic minerals and energy? Do we have the requisite economic and scientific techniques available to answer these questions? Certainly, we cannot forecast over decades with any certainty. There are many, of course, who seem to believe that by the simple fitting of trends, they can tell us something about the world and resource constraints in the year 2000, twenty-three years from now. It is significant that many studies of this sort have added sustenance to the &apos;doom-watching&apos; fraternity of commentators. The reason is simple. The extrapolation of exponential trends into the distant future frequently leads to the most astounding and impossible scenarios. Another feature of exponential growth is the suddenness with which certain fixed limits are approached. It took world population two hundreds years to increase by 1/2 a billion, from 1650 to 1850. Yet some U.N. estimates suggest that the net addition to human population will be over 2 billion between now and the end of the century. Thus, the present world population would increase from a little under four thousand million today to rather over six thousand million in the year 2000.

Increased safety requirements, higher operational costs, greater environmental restrictions, and new competitive processing techniques are the challenges smelter operators must confront in order to remain economically viable. In converting furnaces which have tuyeres such as the Noranda Reactor and the Teniente, Peirce Smith and Hoboken converters, efficient tuyere line management is critical to optimizing blowing rates, increasing refractory life, and improving safety. This paper will describe recent improvements made to equipment used for tuyere punching, tuyere silencing, tuyere pyrometry and refractory drilling of tuyeres and how the proper application of the equipment can lead to operational and safety improvements.

The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren&apos;s mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. "Time-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a wellknown phenomenon. In shales and mudstones with a higher salt concentration in the pore fluid than the ambient fluid, the outward gradient generates an osmotic pressure which acts as the driving force for swelling. The swelling phenomenon appears to be related to ion exchange between the rock porewater and the surrounding water.The swelling potential is expressed as the percent swelling strain that occurs per log cycle of time, in either the vertical (perpendicular to bedding) or horizontal (parallel to bedding) directions. In addition, the swelling potential is also noted to be stress dependent. In practice, therefore, the conditions required for swelling are (i) the accessibility to water, and (ii) an outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid. The relief of in-situ rock stress during excavation serves an initiating mechanism (Lo and Micic, 2010).INTRODUCTIONTime-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a well-known phenomenon. "The Red Dog mine has increased mill throughput most years since start-up. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Later in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifying the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, 21 Outokumpu OK50 (50 m3) mechanical flotation cells and four 3.66 mØ column cells were added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (value improvement program) mill optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment, and power generation issues and has a total budget of US$105 M. Start-up of equipment was phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and the project was completed by the end of 2001. IntroductionRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred days of open seas. As of January 2002, the Red Dog main pit had 38.4 Mt of reserves grading 19.2% Zn, 5.3% Pb, and 102 g/t Ag. Additional reserves and resources contribute an additional 72 Mt at 15.6% Zn, 4.2% Pb, and 78 g/t Ag. Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian, black shale-hosted, zinc-lead-silver deposit located in the DeLong Mountains, western Brooks Range, Alaska. All the rocks associated with the mineralizing event are considered to be part of the exhalite rock package. Silicification was a dominant component of the mineralizing event and the host shale has been silicified and locally resembles a chert. The major sulphides in decreasing order of abundance are sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and galena. Most of the deposit’s silver occurs within the crystal structure of the galena. The dominant ore mineral, sphalerite, is very fine grained to amorphous and is commonly intergrown with silica. Ore textures are massive, fragmental, chaotic, veined and rarely show classic sulphide sedimentary layering. The upper portion of the orebody has been physically and chemically weathered. Oxidation has altered the sulphides to sulphates.
