A brief description is given of the process used by Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited to recover cobalt metal from nickel-cobalt sulphides. A description of the equipment with the operating conditions is presented with an evaluation of the corrosion test results for various stainless steels and other acid resistant materials for the part of the process involving the sulphuric acid leaching of nickel-cobalt sulphide slurry under air pressure. SINCE 1954 the Sherritt Gordon ammonia leach process has been used at Fort Saskatchewan to recover nickel metal, copper sulphides and cobalt-nickel sulphides from nickel concentrate produced at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. 'To develop a process for recovering cobalt and nickel from the cobalt-nickel sulphides, studies were carried out in the Sherritt Gordon laboratory and pilot plant and, late in 1957, continuous acid leaching of sulphides was started in the refinery. "While pipeline hydrotransport is often the most economical way to transport large volumes of mineral concentrate, tailings, or fine ore slurry over long distances, it is in mountainous terrain that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These areas are often remote, with limited existing infrastructure and few potential users willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction of railways or roads suitable for haul trucks difficult and expensive. The elevation difference between the mine and the terminal means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. With pipelines, this elevation difference may reduce or even eliminate the need for pumping. As a result, numerous pipelines have been built, or are being considered, in mountainous regions around the world including: Tasmania, New Guinea, China, Madagascar, the Rockies of North America, and the Andes of South America. However, there are technical difficulties that need to be overcome in the design and operation of mountain pipelines that do not affect pipelines on more level terrain. This presentation reviews some of these difficulties and methods used to overcome them.INTRODUCTIONPipeline transport of solid-liquid slurry (“hydrotransport”) is an important and cost-effective means of transporting large volumes of solids over long distances, especially from a single supplier to a single user (e.g., a concentrator to a port, a concentrator to a tailings dam, or a coal mine to a power plant). Pipelines are generally found to be more economically attractive than alternate transportation methods (e.g. trucking, rail, conveyors, shipping, or some combination) over the life of a project (Aude et al. 1974).Hydrotransport systems have been built in a variety of terrains, but it is in mountainous regions that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These regions are often remote and generally do not have existing transportation infrastructure (roads, railways, navigable rivers). There are few potential users (e.g., farmers, other mines, forestry companies, etc.) who may be willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction and maintenance of railways or all weather roads suitable for large haul trucks difficult and expensive. Mines tend to be higher than the receiving terminal (e.g. a port). This means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. Given a promising claim and the required financial backing to develop it, the first problem that confronts the mine operator is usually the selection of the necessary compressed air plant. The size and type of drive are questions that naturally follow, the former being determined largely by the amount of money available and the speed with which it is desired to carry on the programme of development. The type of drive, such as electric motor, steam or oil-engine, depends on local conditions and has an important bearing on the cost of operations. ns. Few prospective mine operators are fortunate enough to locate claims within the service radius of electric power-lines, although this is more likely to happen nowadays than formerly. In the majority of cases, however, some other form of prime mover is necessary. When wood or coal are available at moderate cost, a small steam-driven plant is usually chosen. Such plants are often arranged so that they can be converted to electric-drive should future developments at any time make this desirable. Many plants of this type are installed in northern Ontario mines. When wood or coal are costly or difficult to transport, oil-engine driven mining plants have many advantages in their favor, and are now quite commonly used. Oil in some locali-ties is considerably cheaper than wood or coal, and is much easier to transport over bad roads.

THE GECO OREBODY, located north of lake Superior in the Thunder Bay district of northern' Ontario, was discovered in 1953. Diamond drilling in the following year indicated a 15,000,000-ton ore-body, and production plans were made for the shipment of copper and zinc concentrates in three years. To accomplish this, the Geco Project was initiated. The property was in an undevdoped, inaccessible area, and the project involved the conversion and extension of a logging road to the property, the construction of two railways and seventy miles of hydro transmission line, the erection of a municipality, the building of a plant, and the development of an underground mine to produce 3,300 tons per day. This paper describes some of the methods used in the underground development phase of the Geco Project.

British Columbia is an important producer of a variety of industrial minerals for both domestic and export markets. Some commodities such as limestone, dolomite, gypsum, calcium carbonate, silica, barite and magnetite are raw materials for well-established industries located in British Columbia, Alberta and northwestern USA. Others, like magnesite, sulphur, jade, asbestos, dimension stone and clay products, are mainly exported in processed form to overseas customers. Companies are developing markets for relatively new mineral products, including pumice, volcanic cinder and zeolites. A number of attractive geological targets have been identified by industry while research by government geologists has outlined the potential for refractory minerals, gemstones, garnet, nepheline syenite, carbonatites, residual kaolin, igneous apatite and peat.

"The assessment of integrity in plants is discussed, together with the codes that are being developed for in service evaluation of engineering fitness for service. The use of Risk Based Inspection is described and some examples are provided of the evaluation of in service components in which flaws have been detected. An example of the assessment of the structure of a mine processing facility is described, and application of Risk Based Inspection and plant assessment procedures to mines is discussed. Periodic assessment of large plants and components to determine their integrity for continued safe operation is becoming a more accepted approach than formerly when regular shutdowns were the normal practice. This is on the way to becoming the preferred procedure for petrochemical plants and power generating plants, and the same philosophy is appropriate for many mining operations. Both the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) have committees developing codes for the continued operation of equipment as distinct from the existing design codes. The philosophy is one of risk-based inspection, which can be on a purely qualitative basis or more quantitatively based.The purpose is to reduce the inspection of unnecessary and non-critical items and to concentrate on the most critical components, reducing costs and downtime and increasing safety. The approach differs from that considered by many maintenance engineers, in that defects that are identified during an integrity evaluation do not automatically cause a component or structure to be condemned or require that repairs are made right away. The seriousness of the defect must be considered and the safe operating life can be estimated before it becomes necessary to replace or repair the unit or component. This is no different from what is done today with passenger aircraft and, to an increasing extent, with pressure vessels, reactor vessels and similar components in the petrochemical and power generating industries."

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

In order to derive the population distribution of gold nanoparticle morphologies as a function of size, highresolution electron microscopic (HREM) observations and structural analyses were done for over 4000 particles (3-18 nm) grown by an inert gas aggregation (IGA) source using helium. To obtain structural features threedimensionally and not to skip high-contrast images, twenty photos were taken for each particle by changing tilting angle of a specimen holder in combination with the through-focus procedure. For the reliable structural determinations, HREM images and their tilting sequences were directly compared with multislice-simulation results for icosahedral, decahedral and face-centered cubic morphologies, and finally the population distribution of each morphology was obtained as a function of size. In the present sample, icosahedral particles were dominantly populated over the whole observed size range and decahedral particles with non-spherical truncated bi-pyramid shape were secondly dominant. Even though a large number of sampling has been done, few crystalline particles were observed.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

INTRODUCTION I WELCOME the opportunity to speak on Programmes in Safety. The invitation to do so shows that those guiding affairs of the Institute in this District realize the practical importance of this subject. My remarks are intended primarily for mines having 100 to 400 employees, approximately. With minor modifications, however, they apply also to larger or smaller operations. Others, I hope, will derive benefit from this paper, for they, too, have a part to play in accident prevention; for example, contractors such as shaft-sinkers; manufacturers of equipment; and consultants and designers of mining, milling, and metallurgical methods. These troubled times stress, as never before, the importance of efficient operations in mining. The days are gone when neglect can be afforded. Safe working conditions and satisfied employees are essential for efficient production at reasonable cost. The mining industry of Ontario long has been keenly aware of the human aspects of this subject, and as a whole it has done much to decrease the frequency and severity of disabling accidents. The number of fatalities per 1,000 employees has been reduced from a high of 5 some two decades ago to an all-time low of 0.89 in 1948; the incidence was slightly higher in 1949, being 1.17 per 1,000. The reduction in non-fatal compensable accidents also has been outstanding, frequency having ?been reduced from over 200 per 1,000 employees some two decades ago to 54 per 1,000 at the producing mines in 1949. These statistics demonstrate progress. Nevertheless, the general picture still leaves much to be desired when viewed from two other angles.

SUMMARY RADIOACTIVE dynamite has been prepared by introducing a small amount of antimony-124 into the explosive. Test work is described on the effectiveness of this tracer, on radiation levels in its neighbourhood, and on different methods of .application. Factors determining the choice of isotope, amount of activity, and overall cost of this process are discussed. INTRODUCTION Instances are known in which dynamite remains unexploded in drill holes in mining operations. Usually such 'bootlegs' are easily located by inspection of the face and the powder is removed before subsequent drilling is started. Occasionally, however, serious accidents occur because workmen drill into an undetected piece of dynamite. In order to avoid such accidents it was suggested that a different method of location might be tied, such as that afforded by the use of radioactive tracers. This paper describes some experiments that were carried out under the auspices of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, with the active co-operation of Canadian Industries Ltd. and Canadian Refractories Ltd., to test the feasibility of such a scheme.

Men who work with metals today are a bit more realistic. I haven't heard of a metallurgist who expects to develop any one alloy that will resist all corrosive media. In the field of stain-less steels, there are about forty different types of alloys that are used where corrosion is a •problem.A stainless product is ordinarily selected because it offers one or more of the following qualities:(1) Resistance to corrosion (2) Resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (3) Good mechanical properties at room temperature (4) Good mechanical properties at high or low temperature (5) Attractive appearance (6) Ease of maintenanceToday we are interested in discussing the stainless steel family of alloys because of their .ability to resist corrosion. We• will not try to explain the Theory of Corrosion. Let us assume that, when surface potential and oxide formations are properly controlled, iron will resist attack in various chemi.cal solutions. The addition of alloying elements to iron does this for stainless steels. The principal stainless alloys used by various Canadian industries are listed in the accompanying Table."

"Medium Voltage (MV) metal clad switchgear is referred to as the voltage class from 2.4 kV to 38 kV. Technological advances in circuit breaker designs over the last 20 years have given rise to retrofit options in lieu of complete replacement for older outdated circuit breaker technology. This paper examines the four MV breaking techniques that exist in industry and investigates various retrofit versus refurbish options for switchgear modernization and life extension. IntroductionThe life extension and upgrade of medium voltage circuit breakers is becoming an increasingly important issue in today’s modern industrial facilities from both a reliability and safety standpoint. Unscheduled downtime, loss of production, and plant safety issues are just some of the concerns that need to be addressed with aging switchgear. A thorough examination of the available breaking mediums allows an informed decision to be made when the time comes to assess equipment performance. If you look back over the history of medium voltage breakers, you will find that there have been four breaking techniques developed and widely used:• air magnetic;• minimum oil;• vacuum; and• SF6.Many facilities that were constructed 25 to 30 years ago relied on air magnetic or minimum oil circuit breakers in their distribution systems. At the time, these were the only “tried and tested” options and they afforded good service. Since then, however, newer technology has given us the vacuum and SF6 mediums which have both proven their reliability and monopolized the market. All the methods have their particular place in industry and what follows is a summary of the advantages, disadvantages, and chronological development of each breaking technique."

This paper introduces the development and application of a new cable anchor - Cable-Lok for pre-stressed cable bolting in mines. Cable-Lok is a spring-loaded cable anchor suitable for the drill hole diameter of 50 and 65 mm (2" and 2.5") in medium soft rock to hard rocks. The cable anchor is automatically set on installation and the cable can be tensioned immediately to provide active and primary support throughout its length. Post-grouting can be conducted independently. In comparison with the conventional cable bolting, Cable-Lok anchor will greatly speed-up the cable bolting circle and decreases the cost of cable bolting. Cable bolting anchored with Cable-Lok anchor has wide application in mines, e.g. pre-stressed cable bolting in large span drifts and intersections for permanent rock support, or in hanging walls or stopes for temporary support, or cable lace anchoring etc. This paper introduces the principle of pre-stressed cable bolting and the specifications of the Cable-Lok anchor, presented the testing results in laboratory and the application cases in mines.

"In preparation for the milling of a new nickel and copper mine ore, Nickel Rim South, Xstrata’s Strathcona Mill is undertaking numerous process improvement projects. Within the grinding circuit, several projects are under development and an automated grinding control strategy, consistent with the operating objectives, was identified as a key requirement. The grinding strategy is to maximize the throughput (quantitative objective) while maintaining the cyclone overflow within specifications (qualitative objective).This paper describes the implementation of a robust grinding control strategy using the existing control system. The implemented controls maintain the cyclone overflow density at the desired target, while continually optimising the rod mill feed rate to allow maximum throughput. This approach has the added benefit of improving the stability of the rougher flotation circuit down stream of the grinding and improving energy efficiency of the rod and primary ball mills. This paper discusses the comparison of the before and after the implementation of results.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding process is a size reduction operation used in the mining industry to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue. Grinding is one of the most important and expensive processes in a concentrator (Xi-song, 2007; Pomerleau 2000; Najim 1995), often accounting for around half of the total operating costs in base metal concentrators (Wills, 1990), which has led to a focus on development and implementation of control and optimisation strategies. The grinding process prepares the ore for the subsequent concentration step, which for sulphide base metal operations, is predominantly flotation. The performance of the concentration (flotation) is very much determined by the feed characteristics of the slurry coming from grinding. The valuable minerals recovery process in flotation is very much influenced by the grinding process and the liberation of the desired minerals from the gangue minerals (McIvor, 1991).The true objective of grinding is to obtain a proper liberation of the minerals as defined by a particle size distribution referenced typically by d80 (80% passing size of product). Besides achieving the desired mineral d80 size, it is clearly desirable to produce as narrow a size distribution as possible to squeeze the maximum amount of the mineral value into the highest recovery region (McIvor, 1991). This is an important criterion for the mill in economically optimizing the grade and recovery for the concentrate product. It is important not to over or under grind, while keeping the specific comminution energy as low as possible (Nunez, 2005) to achieve the target liberation. In other words, maintain an optimal throughput depending on the ore conditions to the capacity of the grinding mills, while providing the flotation process with a constant and narrow size distribution, at a cut size selected to meet the metallurgical requirements (Bascur, 1991)."

INTRODUCTION THOSE concerned with coal mining operations in Alberta have been asked repeatedly the same question, "Why is mechanization in Alberta proceeding so slowly as to lag far behind the mines in the United States?" This question is often asked in such a manner as to indicate that a severe reprimand is overdue to the mining engineers of this Province for their apparent indifference to the problem of improving their mining operations by increased mechanization. To the average person, unacquainted with mining conditions and problems, mechanization appears to be simply a matter of introducing equipment to load coal underground and, once this is done, substantial economies in operating costs will automatically follow. Invariably, those who have followed this simple reasoning have found, to their regret, that such is not the case and that effective mechanization involves something more than the mere process of introducing loading equipment into a mine. To be effective, any programme of mechanization must take into consideration all operations incidental to the mining, transportation, and handling of the coal from the working face to the tipple, and must utilize equipment which can be best adapted to any peculiar condition or circumstance prevailing in the mine concerned. In the use of such equipment, the net and final result should be an improvement in operating costs of sufficient magnitude to at least return to the operator, over a specific period of years or during the expected life of that equipment, all his investment plus a fair return on that investment.

Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.
