"The Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated a large quantity of data that has been used to create a geometallurgically enabled block model. An ongoing challenge is to convert data into usable information and embed geometallurgical practices into resource model development and mine planning to assist with the identification of opportunities to maximise value.This paper will discuss the methods used to disseminate geometallurgical information throughout the planning life cycle including data extraction methods from the geometallurgy acQuire database, and the inclusion of a geometallurgy module in the Olympic Dam Stope Reserves database. The use of geometallurgical information in short-, medium- and long-term mine design and scheduling, including its use in grade descriptor development and stope value assessment tools will also be presented. The Autogenous Fine Grinding Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill The marginal improvements which continue to be made to fine grinding practices have exposed the limits of conventional technologies and highlighted the need for a radically new approach. The patented autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) Mill design consists of a rotating spherical grinding chamber, which shares the same spherical centre as the shaft-mounted counter-rotating disc assembly. The axis of the disc assembly can be inclined to the axis of the spherical grinding chamber by pivoting the disc shaft about the common spherical centre. The inter-particle energy transfer required for breakage results from particle velocity differentials created by the discs intercepting the rotating mass. Particle size reduction is concentrated in high shear zones, which envelop the outer surface and periphery of the discs. This paper traces the development of the KAD Mill from pilot to commercial scale. Pilot work covers a range of minerals including magnetite, calcite, dolomite, barite, limestone and talc. Test results include open and closed circuit operation in wet and dry modes. Conventional milling constraints and energy consumption issues are addressed while new dimensions are added to the feed size range acceptable for wet and dry grinding to fine and ultra-fine sizes.

THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of copper cementation with zinc in sulphate solution. For copper concentrations of the order of 10 p.p.m., a porous, adherent deposit is formed on the zinc surface and this has a significant influence on the reaction rate. When the specific mass of deposit is less than about O· 35 mg/cm2 the surface may be considered as smooth and the rate is described by simple convective counter diffusion of zinc and copper ions through a laminar diffusion boundary layer to the deposit-solution interface. In the presence of additional deposit, the diffusional mass transfer rate is increased by increased surface roughness.The rate under these conditions is first order, with the degree of enhancement independent of further increases in the specific deposit mass. The enhancement in rateis, however, directly related to the initial mass flux and the species involved in the reaction.Preliminary work showed the same mechanism to apply to cementation from chloride solution, solutions of high zinc concentration, and cementation of copper with iron..

Filtration of pulps of varying densities is an essential operation in the hydro-metallurgical production of zinc. The use of filters naturally applies only to the "wet" plants, and in these varying types and sizes are in commission. At Risdon, the Moore suction filter is used for the heavier pulps, except in one instance, where a modification of the Butters-Cassell filter is installed.Filter presses are in general use, and of these, one is a washing unit; the plates, and frames are of cast iron or mild steel, except in one case which is a centre feed press having wooden frames.FILTER DESIGNThe problem of filtration presented itself very early in the history of Risdon and the first developments occurred in what was termed the 250 -lb. plant. Here experiments were made with many types of filters, and as this was the pilot plant on which the design of the 10 ton plant (10 tons of zinc per day) was based, quick decisions were necessary.An Oliver type filter was chosen for the heavier pulp or residue, and a Shriver wooden frame filter press for the lighter pulps.To this day, but with a number of variations, filter presses continue to function unopposed in their particular field; however, the Oliver filter was soon superseded because it was found impossible to wash the filter cake efficiently without repulping; consequently its use was abandoned and the Moore filter adopted.Both- these filters have been modified and developed in many ways to meet the requirements of a zinc plant, but they retain their original basic features.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Huoqiu iron ore field in north-west Anhui province is located in the south-east margin of the North China Craton and hosts large iron resources. Orebodies are hosted in Neoarchean amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks, forming silicon-iron bands from north to south. The area is dominated by an Early Precambrian basement consisting of Neoarchean grey gneisses, amphibolites and metasediments. The gneisses are similar with assemblages of Trondhjemite-Tonalite-Granodiorite in compositions and intercalated with amphibolites. Igneous zircons from gneisses and amphibolites have U-Pb ages of 2.86 and 2.75 Ga respectively, which are interpreted as the crystallisation ages of their protolith. Zircons from amphibolite and gneiss have eHf(t) values of 2.4–15.5 and -3.0–1.5 respectively. The tDM2(Hf) model ages of the gneiss range from 2.87 to 3.14 Ga, which is consistent with tDM1(Hf) ages of amphibolite (2.84–3.16 Ga). The U-Pb-Hf isotopes thus confirm that the gneisses were generated by partial melting of amphibolite. Two granites produce two group Hf isotopic compositions. The older one (1916 ± 42 Ma) has eHf(t) values and tDM1(Hf) ages of -9.4–3.4 and 2.24–2.71 Ga respectively, whereas the younger one (1823 ± 41 Ma) shows a large variation in eHf(t) values of -18.1–12.5 and tDM1(Hf) model ages of 1.73–2.92 Ga. Geological and geochemical characteristics indicate that the Huoqiu banded iron formations are a Superior-type iron formation rather than an Algoma-type as previously considered.CITATION:Yang, X, Liu, L and Wang, B, 2015. Constraints on pore water evolution in the aquifers of a sedimentary basin may be realised through stable isotope analyses of present day waters, and their comparison with water compositions calculated to have been in isotope equilibrium with the products of diagenesis during burial. Integrated with detailed petrographic observations, and thermal, structural and stratigraphic analyses, fluid migration patterns at various stages in a basin's history can be identified. This has important implications for modelling basin hydrology, hydrocarbon distribution, and reservoir quality in the Latrobe Group, Gippsland Basin, and oil-prone successions Elsewhere.

Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. The mineral matter has been isolated from a selection of Australian bituminous coals using low temperature (radio-frequency) oxidation or hydrogen peroxidation techniques and the species present identified by x-raydiffraction. Quartz, kaolinite, and a range of mixed layer clay minerals are the dominant constituents of the coals studied, with carbonate, sulphate, and phosphate minerals abundant in some samples. The clay bands thatoccur within these coal seams contain similar mineral assemblages to the coals themselves, but the lutites that form the inter-seam strata have a markedly different mineralogy, characterized by abundant quartz andillite and a low kaolinite content.The kaolinite is thought to have formed chiefly by interaction of silica and alumina in the waters of the coal swamp, aided by the catalytic action of organic acids, while most of the other clay minerals are probablydetrital. The absence of illite from Australian coals is not fully understood, but it may reflect the action of organic acids on the detritus in the swamp, coupled with deposition in freshwater rather thanmarine conditions. Pyrite, although present in some coal samples when fresh, may undergo oxidation during storage to form a number of sulphate minerals, some of which may interact with any calcite present toform gypsum.The mineral matter assemblage in the coal determines to a great extent the fusion characteristics of the ash.Unless abundant carbonates are present, coals with kaolinite-rich assemblages have a very refractory ash, while those rich in chlorite or montmorillonite have ash fusion temperatures between 1000 and 1300°C. Theinfluence of the minerals on coal preparation and coking properties is also brieflY discussed, as well as the potential of mineral matter studies in coal seam correlation.

Disposable-tip emf cells at present used in liquid steel can be used to measure the state of oxidation of high-iron slags produced in non-ferrous smelting. This provides a new tool for the control and evaluation of pyrometallurgical operations.An investigation of oxygen potential variations throughout a typical nickel smelter using the flash smelting technique gave a valuable insight into the process. Correlations of oxygen potential with ferric to ferrous oxide ratio and nickel content in slag were in reasonable accord with equilibrium data in the literature indicating that the probes may be used both as a plant investigation tool and possibly as a means of obtaining thermodynamic data for slags.

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

Improving Pelletisation of Pyrite Cinder by High Pressure Roller Grinding As an important secondary resource for ironmaking, pyrite cinder is characterised by coarse particle size, low specific surface area, high porosity and poor surface activity, which leads to high bentonite dosage, low strength and too high moisture of green balls and high roasting temperature. In this paper, a study of improving the pelletisation of pyrite cinder containing feed by using high pressure roll grinding (HPRG) was presented, which aimed to improve the quality of green pellets and reinforce roasting performance pellets. It is shown that pyrite cinder is characterised by complicated mineral compositions dominated by haematite and metal sulfides, porous surface and middle class ballability, leading to higher balling moisture, higher bentonite dosage and higher firing temperature for pellet hardening. The pelletisation of pyrite cinder can be improved by high pressure roller grinding and blending with magnetite in the pellet feed. The former is probably ascribed to the increase in specific surface areas of pellet feed from 850 cm2+g to 1690 cm2+g when the pellet feed passes through roller twice. Good quality green balls and fired pellets can be made from feed comprising 40 - 60 per cent pyrite cinder and 60 - 40 per cent magnetite concentrate at small scale under the following conditions: 1.2 per cent bentonite, feed passing through roller twice at 7 per cent moisture at 1.5 ton pressure, balling at 13 per cent moisture for 13 min, preheating at 1050¦C for 12 min and firing at 1300¦C for 8 min. Green balls possess such properties as drop numbers of 6.5 times, compressive strength of 19.1 Newton and thermal shock temperature of 533¦C. Fired pellets are imparted high compressive strength of over 3000 Newton per pellet. Small scale tests have been proven by pilot scale tests that high grade fired pellets are made, assaying 63 per cent Fe and minor other impurities, such as sulfur and phosphorus except for copper content. The fired pellets made of three blends possess excellent metallurgical performance, such as reducibility index higher than 65 per cent, reduction swelling index lower than 15 per cent and low temperature reduction degradation lower than2 per cent. Especially the compressive strength after reduction is higher 719Newton per pellet.
