The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Lld near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation.The economics of this exercise were considerably enhanced in 1994 by changing the project's principal product from nickel-oxide sinter to refined high-purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site.Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to change completely the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.The changes have meant that the project is no longer limited to selling lower-value oxide sinter to a relatively small number of large stainless steel mills. In the past year sales of the new high purity nickel metal products have expanded to include a broad range of international customers in the special alloy, foundry and chemical industries.

The concept of precise, accurate timing with Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was first seriously addressed in the mid-1980s and much was made of the cheapness and profusion of digital watches in terms of the likelihood of EDDs also being cheap and easy to produce. Ten years later, with every major explosives company and many electronics groups having instituted projects to capitalise on the promise of these devices, production devices are still to come into general use. In South Africa, Expert Explosives units have been used in most applications during proving trials and more recently for production blasting in underground ring stoping and open cast coal. The outcome has been valuable learning both as to the benefits and technical requirements for electronic delay blasting, and especially, safety aspects. Examples are shown of production blasts which utilised the power of EDDs. It is evident that it is not delay accuracy alone which determines the value of these systems, but the whole robustness, flexibility and ease of delay allocation when harnessing blast engineering knowledge. Muckpile movement and shape, fragmentation and vibration frequencies have shown to be greatly influenced by designs which can be implemented no other way. The flexibility of a system and the power of the software controlling it are crucial in capitalising on blasting potential, which lies in integrating control of blast timing with other developing electronic Technologies.

In the comminution industry cone crushers are widely used for secondary and subsequent stages of size reduction. Traditionally cone crushers have been operated and monitored manually. Alteration of discharge setting is now commonly achieved via hydraulic means, however, compensation of liner wear can still involve plant shutdown and loss of production. Drift in discharge setting due to liner wear is still a major problem that must be addressed to improve product quality, consistency and reduce recirculating load. The continuous demand for better quality products and the high cost of reprocessing or discarding unsaleable material, highlights the need for re-examination of the technology associated with the crushers to ensure optimum control and system efficiency. A collaborative project between Pegson Ltd, one of the leading UK manufacturers of jaw and cone crushers, De Montfort University Leicester, and Transfer Technology plc was established to address the technological requirement for automation of the control of cone crushers. The machine chosen for the study is a 900 Autocone cone crusher manufactured by Pegson Ltd. The design philosophy is based on a mechatronic approach providing a complete solution through a distributed network of intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence technology and adaptive control. The modular design of the system ensures a progressive sophistication in technology that allows the automation to be phased in as required. This will ensure maximum benefits to all sectors of the aggregate industry. It is estimated that the automation will result in savings of around ten per cent. The savings will result from minimising the production of unsaleable products by reliable condition monitoring and automation of the control and maintenance of system parameters to optimise system efficiency. Extension of the methods and principles into the mining sector is anticipated. The control over the size of crusher product will offer great benefits to the mining industry with significant implications for subsequent milling and beneficiation processes.

The Gympie Goldfield was the sixth largest producer of gold in historic terms in Australia. The Joint Venture Agreement between BHP Gold Mines Limited and Devex Limited was signed in January 1987. Since that time, some $20 million have been spent on underground and surface exploration work in the southern portion of the goldfield. The project is of considerable interest as the dewatering, rehabilitation and equipping of an old rectangular timber-lined shaft has been undertaken. The project is located in Gympie, a city of 10,000 people. The issues of dealing with urbanisation and associated environmental aspects are vital to the success of the project. An outline of the project and the geology of the mineralised structures follows:

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. Management of environmental issues is an integral part of the mine decommissioning process. In Queensland, miners must comply with environmental aspects of the Mineral Resources Act and Contaminated Land legislation. Successful decommissioning involves the integration of a final Plan of Operations, decommissioning report addressing the mineÆs commitments included in its Environmental Management Overview Strategy (EMOS), and Site Contamination Report for relinquishment of leases under the Contaminated Land Act (1991). Niugini MiningÆs Red Dome Mine is proceeding through the decommissioning process. This paper discusses the important environmental management issues including sampling programs, management of culturally significant areas, assessment of background concentrations of target analytes, the use of historical reviews and risk assessment techniques, the timing of works, and the remediation/management of large areas of impacted land. The importance of a clear communications plan between key stakeholders is also discussed.

The application of high technology to monitor and control fire life safety, critical functionality in tunnels and underground spaces generally has progressed at an ever accelerating rate over the past decade. Today these systems comprise some of the most complex and little understood aspects of the tunnel/underground facility construction industry, with this area being perceived as high risk comprising impenetrably complex ‘black box’ technology covered in blinking LEDs. This paper will seek to explode some urban myths and common misconceptions associated with such systems, providing its intended audience with a review of what all this technology comprises and where the real risks lie in its delivery lie.The author contends (and looks to support such contention via this paper) that by applying baseline project and risk management processes to the procurement of this widely misunderstood black box technology, the quality of the final outcome can be much improved, driving innovation, reducing both cost and significantly mitigating delivery risk.CITATION:Taylor, G M, 2014. A South African chromite sample was subjected to characterisation and physical beneficiation testwork in order to assess its suitability to produce an upgraded chromite product with a silica level of <1 per cent SiO2 and a chromite level of >46 per cent Cr2O3. Chemical analysis by XRF indicated that the bulk material had a Cr2O3 content of 40.5 per cent w/w and a SiO2 content of 7.5 per cent w/w. Combined XRF analysis with sizing data showed that the majority (~70 per cent) of the siliceous material was present in the +600 ¦m fraction while ~70 per cent of the Cr2O3 was in the -600 ¦m fraction. Qualitative mineral phase analysis by XRD indicated that the sample mineralogy was dominated by ferrian-magnesiochromite spinel ([Fe,Mg]Cr2O4) and aluminium-chromite spinel (Fe[Al,Cr]2O4), with enstatite (Mg2Si2O6), haematite (Fe2O3) and anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) as minor phases. SEM and EMP characterisation showed that the silica was mainly present in discrete enstatite grains but lesser amounts were also present as the high silica phases plagioclase and enstatite on the edge of grains. Wet gravity separation performed on sized fractions (-600+106 ¦m size range) from the -2.0 mm (primary) ore as well as the ore that had been crushed to pass 0.6 mm (secondary) showed that stage crushing of the -2 mm +600 ¦m fraction followed by wet gravity separation upgraded the Cr2O3 grade at 70 per cent Cr2O3 recovery from ~44 per cent Cr2O3 in the primary material to 46 per cent Cr2O3 (the target grade specification) in the secondary sample. It also showed that the stage crushing of this +600 ¦m fraction at a cut-off level of one per cent SiO2 increased the cumulative Cr2O3 recovery from ~50 per cent in the primary material to ~63 per cent in the secondary sample in the same size range of -600+106 ¦m. The extent to which additional crushing could lead to improved chromite recoveries at the required chromite and silica grade target specifications was not determined. This experience demonstrates that prior to processing test work being conducted, a thorough understanding of the chemistry and mineralogy of the test sample promotes efficient and targeted processing research.

Asteroids contain an abundance of valuable resources such as: nickel, cobalt, gold, platinum and rhodium. Whilst the consumption of mineral resources on Earth continues to deplete, meteoroids have the potential to become a significant source of minerals. Even though the minerals content of asteroids may be relatively high, the valuable minerals are more likely to be only a small portion of the total ore present in the main body. The ores must, therefore, be processed to extract the metals of interest from the waste. Existing terrestrial technologies rely on manipulating the physical and chemical properties of minerals. The application of these techniques to asteroids processing, however, is not straightforward due to the presence of different conditions such as zero gravity and lack of water in space. Determining the controls of high-grade mineralisation at Vera Nancy requires careful data collection and assessment on a global and specific deposit basis. The techniques developed over 60 years ago to analyse structure, grade and width data are just as applicable today and can be enhanced using modern geological modelling software. High ore grades at Vera Nancy are controlled by both the primary geometry of the mineralised structure and the intersections of the main mineralised veins with subordinate splay veins. The main mineralised structure dilated as a consequence of extensional tectonics while the splays acted as conduits bringing oxidising surficial fluids into mixing zones precipitating high gold grades. Near-mine exploration is focussed on identifying zones of vein flexure and splay interaction to locate the relatively small high-grade shoots. Data modelling in a 3D environment is an essential process for understanding the geometry of the system being explored.

In recent years there has been a growing recognition of the impact that mining practices have on the efficiency of mineral processing operations. Head grade, dilution, particle size distribution and their variability are known to have a significant effect on the throughput and recovery achieved in mineral processing plants. Improved process monitoring and modelling have provided the opportunity to identify and quantify some of these impacts and to define very significant incentives to optimise the overall operation from the mining face through subsequent comminution and processing. The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has been undertaking research to optimise æMine to MillÆ performance through a major AMIRA research project and through individual research contracts with mining companies. This work has resulted in a broad range of field and laboratory experience in terms of both the challenges and the opportunities encountered when tailoring blasting operations to suit the overall æMine to MillÆ production chain. This paper describes the objectives of æMine to MillÆ blasting to optimise the system of rock breakage involved in the blasting, crushing and SAG milling of hard, brittle ores. The design of such blasts falls outside the conventional envelope of experience for most engineers and requires the consideration of some critical factors if the objectives of such blast are to be met and some of the potential problems are to be avoided. Experience to-date has also found that the quality of implementation is critical to the success of æMine to MillÆ blasts.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

Blue amphibole-bearing rocks in the North D'aguilar Block of southeast Queensland occur either as relict pods and lenses within regionally extensive greenschist facies phyllites and schists or as blocks entrained in serpentinite-matrix melange. Epidote + crossite-bearing varieties predominate and formed under conditions consistent with underplating and high P:T metamorphism in a subduction-related tectonic environment. Neither lawsonite nor jadeite has been observed and metamorphic conditions are estimated at 380-4500C for pressures of 0.5-0.8 GPa. High P:T metamorphism occurred during the earliest stages of deformation and was superimposed upon protoliths of inferred Late Devonian - Early Carboniferous age, including mafic volcanics, tuffs and coarse volcaniclastic breccias as well as pelagic and henipelagic sediments, all of which have undergone varying degrees of over-printing to the greenschist facies. Greenschist facies metamorphism occurred during the second phase of deformation and was associated with the formation of mainly flat-lying or subhorizontal structures; it followed the cessation of subduction and occurred in response to either thermal relaxation during uplift or the imposition of regional heating induced by crustal thickening and/or synkinanatic granite emplacement. Uplift and cooling of the high P:T rocks was completed by 260-265 Ma and may have occurred in response to the same extensional processes which gave rise to the onset of rifting in the adjacent Esk Trough.

The Jundee gold mining operation is located in the Western Australian Yandal Greenstone belt. Jundee is a mature operation encompassing multiple and complex underground ore resources, dwindling open pit reserves, large surface stockpiles, small satellite resources and two near-mine but stand alone process plants. The imminent completion of continuous open pit mining and the associated drop-off in total mill feed precipitated a review of the strategic mine plan and development of options that would optimise the exploitation of the remaining mineral resources and the utilisation of the existing plant and infrastructure.An initial review of the strategic decisions to be made, available options as well as the quantity, complexity and co-dependency of the strategic variables quickly led to the conclusion that an Operations Research style modelling approach would be appropriate. An 'off-the-shelf' program engine by the name of WHATSBEST! (LINDO Systems Inc.) was chosen on the basis of price, reputation and ease of use. The model was formulated with the unknown variables (being the ore mining rates) expressed as a proportion of the maximum achievable ore mining rate from each source. Costs were defined as variable or fixed, with this definition being a key aspect of the modelling process. The critical application of the model was in determining the optimal extraction rate of ore, the destination (ie Jundee or Nimary mill) and the sequence of extraction of each ore source that maximized the cash flow of the operation. The program was designed to be able to quickly derive an optimal result from the many variables, replacing the previous laborious iterative process of arriving at an acceptable answer by means of several large and static spreadsheet models. This paper presents the process of selection, formulation, application and scope of operation of the turn-key linear and non-linear program strategic model now used as part of the Jundee Operation strategic decision making process.

High aluminium steel is a promising advanced steel known for its exception properties and holds significant economic and strategic importance. However, the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 based slag with high alumina content reacts vigorously with alumina refractories during the smelting process at high temperature, seriously affecting the safe and efficient production of furnaces and resulting in the formation of Al2O3-MgO non-metallic inclusions within the molten steel. This is a bottleneck problem for high-quality steel refining, and the key reaction path during the corrosion remains unclear. The dissolution reaction mechanism of alumina refractories in high alumina CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags under a weak static magnetic field was investigated in this work, using high temperature laser confocal microscopy and in situ radiation spectroscopy techniques. The results indicate that the interaction between the high alumina slags and the alumina refractories is governed by free radical reactions. The dissolution of alumina forms AlO and AlO2 radicals. The reaction rate increases with the C/S ratio of the slag due to its low polymerisation. The reaction between non-bridging oxygen and AlO2 free radicals accelerates the generation of AlO and O2ꞏ- radicals. The reaction layer composed of calcium aluminate is formed through the recombination of AlO, Caꞏ+ and O2ꞏ- radicals. The weak static magnetic field induces the Zeeman splitting of free radical pairs and intersystem crossing occurs, promoting the formation of triplet free radical pairs through the hyper-fine coupling effect. The reaction can be significantly inhibited as the triplet free radical pair does not meet Pauli’s incompatibility principle. This discovery perfects the structure theory of molten slags with radicals and provides supplement to the design of the highly slag-resistant refractories, and provides the theoretical basis for the development of external field protection technologies for high-quality steel refining.

Geophysical borehole logging, which measures various in situ petrophysical parameters, can be used not only for qualitative interpretation such as strata correlation, but also for geotechnical assessment through quantitative data analysis. It can play an important role for safe and productive mining operations. Here we provide various applications of geophysical logs such as the estimation of the strength of intact rock or unconfined (or uniaxial) compressive strength (UCS), automated lithological/geotechnical interpretation, geophysical strata rating and orebody delineation and grade estimation. These derived parameters could provide input to control of geological and geotechnical models. This could assist site geologists and planning and production geotechnical engineers to predict and manage mining conditions on an ongoing basis. Both conventional logs such as density, natural gamma and sonic, and less common logging data such as full waveform sonic and televiewer data are examined for different applications. Although the examples used here are mainly for coal mining applications, but they can be equally applied to hard rock metalliferous mining such as iron ore mining.

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

The continuous casting of zinc alloys has been of fundamental importance for many years in the production of a number of products, including sheet for architectural applications, battery cans for dry cells and wire for metallising. The intrinsic benefits of continuous casting, including efficiency and high tonnage capability, uniformity of metallurgical structure and properties, and absence of voids and other defects, have contributed to the success of these products. Less well known, but of growing importance, is the more recent application of continuous casting technology to the production of zinc alloy bar stock products, including bearing stock, machining bar stock, forging stock and cathodic protection anodes. A wide range of zinc alloys are now continuously cast in a variety of cross sectional shapes and sizes to suit the diverse characteristics of these products. Of particular significance are the introduction of hollow zinc-aluminum bearing stock, and the availability of zinc alloy machining bar stock for hydraulic applications and for producing prototypes of zinc alloy pressure die castings. In addition to the traditional benefits, continuous casting provides special properties which are important in the application of these bar stock products. The list of successful applications of continuously cast zinc alloy bar stock is growing rapidly, and the market potential for resultant new zinc applications appears to be significant.

Cyanide-extractable gold is far more meaningful in the definition of ore, and control of extraction, than fire- assayable or aqua regia digestible gold. The use of cyanide- extractable gold addresses the significant problems of over- as well as under-assaying by fire and aqua regia digests. The problems of conventional control or diagnostic cyanidation extractions: lengthy extraction, and masking by pregrobbing in cyanidation extractions for assay purposes; are surmounted with a novel activator - Leach WELL. Full extraction of liberated gold, insignificantly affected by preg-robbers, can now be achieved within 30 minutes. This can assist in reducing common gold losses presently often hidden by inappropriate mine call factors, and/or high grade cut values.
