Upon subduction, water is liberated from the sediments and the porous struc- ture of the oceanic crust and from de- hydration of minerals for redistribution and chemical reaction. A survey of pro- cesses which are likely to occur along the subducting plate reveals that water may well be basic in subduction induced gas generation, magma formation and ore deposition. In analogy to the industrial water gas process, reaction of water with car- bonaceous matter, in subducted sediments is likely to yield substantial volumes of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. While water and carbon dioxide appear to play a determining role in the development of differentiated magmas, hydrogen will react with metal sulfides and sulfur to form hydrogen sulfide which is essential in sulfide ore depo- sition. A survey of possible metal extrac- tion chemistry along subduction suggests a stepwise solubilization of metals from sediments and oceanic crust, and a poten tial accumulation of dissolved metals in zones of characteristic composition. The metal spectrum in ore deposits at near surface appears to reflect the com- position of the solution in the respec- tive subduction zone. A tendency for preferential solubi- lization of copper at subductidn level, from among the transition metals, an in- creasing generation of hydrogen sulfide in the sane direction and partition effects as well as sulfide precipitation characteristics lead to enrichment in copper and to its selective deposition in the direction towards the trench as observed in S. The KSS Lead Plant (Kivcet - SNAMPROGETTI - SAMIM) of Por tovesme, owned by Nuova Samim (the sector-head Company for non ferrous metals and derivatives owned by ENI), has been operating since february 1987. This plant is based on the Soviet Kivcet licence and testwork carried out on the pilot plant of VNIITSVETMET in Ust Kameno gorsk fed by the Nuova Samim's concentrates. The plant is com pletely automatized using the most advanced technologies and it is operated by nineteen people on shift work, including all ancillary units and lead decopperizing-casting. The expected performance of the plant has been confirmed and improves day by day in relation of the operating experience, thanks to the new conceptual design of the furnace. Due to the remarkable flexi bility of the process, the integration of the lead plant with the other plants of the metallurgical complex of Portovesme rro-#4 (Electrolytic Zinc Plant, Sulphuric Acid Plant, Imperial Smel ting) has shown all the economic advantages. The lead content in the ambient air, detected by the monitors, either in the working area and on the ground outside the complex, is widely Pb W" below the stricter new limits recommanded by the E.E.C. (Economic European Community) rules and by the Italian law. The whole process is carried out in equipment completely closed and under suction and it does not require manual operations with exposure to the lead. The production cost is much lower than that performed by the traditional technology. This advantage permits wide margin to consider investment to replace the traditional technology.

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. "Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). For any gold deposit-based geometallurgical study, the collection and processing of representative samples for gold grade and recovery tests is critical. Sampling protocols should be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The proportion and size of gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling protocols and metallurgical recovery processes employed. Studies focussing on ore mineralogy and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. Key issues are the presence of gold particle clustering (important for sampling optimisation) and proportion of coarse versus fine to refractory gold. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a radiographic technique that produces high-resolution 3D computerised models of objects based on density distribution. The ‘virtual’ specimens are made up of voxels, the 3D equivalent of pixels each assigned a grey value based on X-ray absorption. This paper presents the results of recent research on the imaging of in situ gold particles in a coarse gold-bearing ore. The technique shows promise as a rapid non-destructive method for preliminary characterisation to facilitate more detailed studies. Early and rapid gold particle determination enables sampling protocol optimisation and metallurgical recovery parameters to be defined prior to detailed feasibility studies

In the early 1950's, it was forecast that there would be, worldwide, a need for approximately sixty computers! Included in that estimate was provision for a considerable amount of geoscience modelling. Since 1950, the role and concept of the computer has changed. With that change has come alteration and adaptation within industry in order to better utilise the services and tools that computers can provide. For example the science of statistics prior to the computer was regarded as an intractible speciality. Computers have allowed the exploitation and further generation of statistical theory. In turn, as the science of statistics has become practical and relevant, the mineral geologist has moved from being essentially "a-numeric" to "non-numeric" to highly skilled in the application and use of very sophisticated statistical concepts. The modern computer provides the opportunity to perform many of the old practices more conveniently and/or economically and, perhaps more importantly, for exploration it provides- an enormous range of activities which previously would have been impossible. Such new activities allow for imaginative and creative application and extension of basic theory into practical situations, which when used by well trained, able people can open up new avenues of exploration. However, the use of such tools by poorly trained or incompetent people can lead to errors potentially as great as any success derived from the same tools. This paper reviews some applications of the computer to exploration, and attempts to discuss likely future developments.

A review of publicly available coronial inquiries into fatalities that have occurred within the resources sector since the year 2000 reveals that a loss of corporate memory has been a contributing factor in 40 per cent of these accidents (National Coroners Information Service, 2010, Appendix B). With the highest levels of employee turnover within the Australian economy, increasingly complex operations and an ageing workforce, the management of corporate memory within the Australian resources industry poses a significant and often unrecognised safety risk.    The North Parks airblast of 1999 is used as a case study to highlight how corporate memory loss poses a significant hazard to resources projects and how such incidents will continue to occur if corporate memory is not effectively managed. Best practice from other industries is discussed to demonstrate how knowledge management systems can effectively work. This paper discusses how systems can be put in place within the geographically diverse resources sector, and how at the heart of any knowledge management system a culture of knowledge management needs to exist within an organisation.   The paper then discusses the importance of retaining key personnel and utilises findings from primary survey data collated in 2009 to show the size of the retention problem within the industry. From the data possible solutions to retaining key staff are proposed.   Finally the large and increasing role of contractors and consultants within the industry is discussed and methods of managing their knowledge are proposed.

Performance testing is often used by project owners and financiers to provide protection from, or assessment of, technical aspects of project design, procurement, construction and commissioning. The performance tests can range from comprehensive performance warranties relating to process performance and production in the case of lump sum turn key (LSTK) projects to less onerous demonstration tests for cost reimbursable contracts. This paper will discuss performance testing from both the contractorÆs and ownerÆs perspectives and focuses on: when performance tests are required, what type of performance test/warranty is optimum for each type of project, and how project performance should be evaluated. The requirement for performance testing can be driven by the project financiers, particularly in the case of smaller resource development companies. In such cases, differentiation between ownerÆs risk and contractorÆs risk can become contentious. At the other end of the spectrum, larger mining houses may choose to heavily influence the engineering and design process with the contractor supplying services on a reimbursable basis. In that case, the performance testing process is often limited to demonstration tests that validate performance for the ownerÆs corporate governance requirements. This paper was prepared due to the lack of published benchmarking of performance testing and the resultant differences in expectations between a contractor and a project owner that often surface late in the contract negotiation process. The paper provides a checklist of requirements for both the owner and the contractor that may be used to provide æcommon purposeÆ early in the contract negotiation process.

As an Inspector of Mines in Queensland, my main responsibilities include the enforcement of the Mining Act 1968 - 1986, the Mines Regulation Act 1964 - 1983 and the Metalliferous Mining regulations 1985 to promote the safe and responsible exploitation of the States' mineral wealth. An important adjunct to this task is the offering of an advisory service to the mining industry. However, in the pursuit of my duties to this regard, I have sadly observed in some cases, numerous wrong doings and negative activities by miners which have led to their ultimate demise, not to mention that of others. Despite what I consider corrective advice, I have witnessed, again in some cases, disregard and blind pursuit for the wrong end. This then is a novel approach to get the message home in the form of a light hearted cartoon presentation relating the saga of an average Aussie battler entering the mining game unprepared, making the wrong decisions due to his own ignorance and the cleverness of others, leading finally to his and possibly others' downfall. It is not intended to insult any particular profession or group of individuals and only endeavours to impart to readers and listeners, the message of being prepared and alert when entering the gold mining industry. Even though the presentation focuses on the woes of a rookie alluvial gold miner, a similar analogy could be drawn with his hard rock counterpart since the basic issues that I have attempted to address are common. By no means is there a saga complete because there are many more traps a miner can inadvertently fall into and only time has prevented me from referencing them.

The first difficulty encount.ered in preparing this paper was to find a definition of the word "special" as applied to steel. The first thought is "obviously any grade not mild steel" but this is an over-simplification, because the term "mild steel" covers a series of carbon ranges, each found from experience to be especially suited to the production of a particular rolled section.Even if the Australian structural mild steels are excluded it is found that no part of the plant here is independent of special steel.The face-man on Iron Monarch makes his bench safe by barring down with a 0.6% carbon steel bar. He bores a hole into the ironstone with a 0.75-0.8% carbon steel drill, driven by a jackhammer which is built of a variety of special steels. After it is shot down, the stone is lifted by an electric shovel, very few of whose steel components fall into the general category of structural grades of mild steel.Further special steels are met with in the truck into which the stone is loaded, the hauling electric locomotive, and the rails on which these .run. Even the permanent way uses more than one grade, e.g., the crossings experiencing heavy service have their frogs built with austenitic manganese steel inserts.Special steels play their part in the overhead crane which tips these trucks, and in the crushers into which they discharge, and so they can be followed right through the production line, and they are still there at the seaward end of the ship loading boom at the head of the WhyalIa ore jetty.

As an environmental "pollutant", noise is different. For one thing, it is localised (as opposed to transfrontier) and, for another, relatively low levels can trigger very strong human reaction. The reactions, which are annoyance-based, range from mild to violent and do not always correlate well with the levels experienced. This paper draws on technical aspects of noise to consider control and control principles and balances them with the subjective nature of the perceptions and reactions. It is critical to bear in mind that health effects resulting from noise are secondary to the primary human reaction. It is also important to appreciate that annoying noise levels are usually well below those which cause hearing loss. Large mines tend to be remote from cities and towns and the country surrounding such mine sites is often inhospitable. In general, residences near large mines are committed for use by mine personnel and annoyance from mining noise would be rare. Noise problems at long term operations are often a result of secondary activity or land use. As a pioneer mining community develops, secondary and service industries may be established and a township created. With changes in way of life, the perception of problems also changes. Therefore, it is never too early to plan for noise abatement, particularly because noise is only one of a number of environmental and community concerns. Ihny environmental problems are associat- ed with development or expansion of smaller open cut facilities such as hardrock quarries. There is an ever-present need to reduce product cost by mining or quarrying deposits close to the end user and many local authorities have to operate quarries for undertaking their civil engineering responsibilities.

The reality is that in today's world almost half of nearly six billion people on the planet do not have access to commercial energy and the services it brings. Based on UN projections, in 30 years time there are likely to be nearly three billion more people in the world, over 90 per cent of them in countries which are already economically poor. The World Energy Council (WEC), through its 102 member countries, monitors trends and developments and projects future trends. WEC is a non-governmental international body representing all forms of energy and is committed to the sustainable use of energy for all mankind. This paper is based on WEC studies and papers presented at its many conferences and congresses worldwide. Primary energy demand growth is dominated by the developing countries over the next 30 years. The world energy mix is projected to change very little over the next 30 years. Fossil fuel supplies (ie coal, oil and gas) are likely to decline from 77 per cent to 73 per cent, nuclear energy may grow from five per cent to six per cent and renewable energy sources (eg hydro, solar, geothermal, wind, tidal and biomass) could increase from 18 per cent to 21 per cent. World energy consumption is expected to grow by over 50 per cent over the next 30 years. The paper reviews changes in energy demand in the world, particularly in the Asia/Pacific region. Environmental issues are covered, as are developments such as solar energy from space and the status of renewable energy forms. Agendas for action to achieve change are also reviewed.

However, where silica dust of less than 10 micron sizing is present, they Cannot be recommended. Generally, they are more acceptable to the men than the heavier but more efficient types of industrial respirator.The best avenues of approach to training appear to be:(a) Liberal use of vi~ual aids (posters, photos, slides, etc.)(b) Efficient interpreter service.(c) Constant follow-up and check by foreman and fellow workmen.Mr. W.Marsden (B.H.P. This paper describes the oil engihe plant owned and operated by Gold Mines .of Kalgoorlie Limited, and gives some details of installation, operational, and maintenance experiences which have arisen during the years of service, the last 5 years of which have been under the writer's control. Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 alternator units have run 50,276, 48,006, 49,677 and 25,930 hours respectively, and much knowledge has been obtained of their performances and faults. During the war years, it has not been easy to obtain spare parts; this, coupled with the loss of No. 4: alternator unit to the Commonwealth Government, made operation and maintenance a very difficult problem.All engines are of the enclosed vertical, single acting, 4-stroke cycle, airless injection type.The electrical power plant originally consisted of four 6-cylinder Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to Bruce Peebles alternators, running at 375 r.p.m., and generating 3-phase electric power at 3,300 volts, 50 cycles.No. 1 unit, installed in 1936, is a 6-cylinder 450 b.h.p. standard 12A Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engine, direct coupled to 280 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternator. The remaining three units are 6-cylinder, 660 b.h.p., lSA oil cooled piston type Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to 410 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternators, making a total capacity of 1,510 kw.No. 4"alternator. unit, an 18A Bellis.& Morcom set, was taken over by the Commonwealth Government in June 1943.

Since the introduction of froth flotation for industrial practice, the process has long been developed and improved by making cultivated guesses or by using trial and error methods to a varying degree. Fresh possibilities have emerged after development of new surface sensitive analysing methods and in situ electrochemical methods. Having had the possibility to combine different findings between science and everyday plant practice, Outokumpu has been able to develop a catch-all procedure to manage a flotation process taking into account the specific requirements set by different minerals in a slurry. A number of these procedures are available and offered globally to clients as part of a Plant Audit service. The Outokumpu Plant Process Audit (Process ef-X) concept comprises of mineralogical determinations from process samples and plant data analysis together with electrochemical process measurements using mineral electrodes. Automatic control loop analysis can also be included. The objective is to combine the results for a basis of flotation process improvement. Since this methodology has earlier been an in-house practice, it follows that the results are also reflected in the development and design of the OutokumpuÆs processing equipment. An increasing number of ores have a very intimate fine-grained texture and it may be physically impossible to combine high grade with acceptable recovery by a flotation process alone. For such cases, combinations of different hydrometallurgical û mineral separation û pyrometallurgical processes are available. Mineral specific information and chemical expertise of flotation technology can be utilised in development of other processes, as well.

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) is Australia's largest company with widespread commercial interests ranging from steel productin to minerals, oil and gas recovery. While these interests are worldwide, the Company operates or is partner in more than 30 Australian mining ventures. BHP Engineering (BHPE) is the in-house consultant to BHP but is also the largest consultancy in Australia available to general industry. Australian Groundwater Consultants Pty Limited (AGC) is a large, independent consultancy offering specialist services in all aspects of water resources, waste management and environmental engineering, both in Australia and overseas. AGC is particularly well regarded within the mining industry and has a considerable record of providing solutions for mine water related issues. By drawing on the extensive combined experience of AGC and BHP Engineering, this paper will summarize some of the unique ways in which water interacts with and impacts on mining operations in Australia, particularly in matters such as: Slope Stability Drainage and Dewatering Production Cost (Transport, Drilling, Blasting, etc) Water Supply Water Management Tailings and Waste Management Environmental Issues. The paper will also illustrate the cost benefit of providing major engineering works for reduction in total mining cost. It will be shown that, through advance planning and close interaction between outside experts (ie consultants) and on- site personnel, very significant operational cost savings can be made while at the same time achieving a safe and responsible mining environment.

Many mining companies, by their remoteness of location from source of power, have to generate their own power and must experience the same problem that had to be met when deciding to increase the capacity of the power station. At present the Company is treating approximately 54,000 tons of ore mined per month, and the present shift average load. is approximately 8,500 kW. at 0.8 power factor, generated at the power plant, the observed peak load being 10,500 kW.It is proposed to increase the tonnage of ore treated to include 36,000 tons of copper ore, in addition to the present 54,000 tons of lead ore. The average load is estimated to be approximately' 16,000 kW. with a peak load of 17,500 kW. The estimate provides for power of 1,000 kW. to be supplied to the north end leases in the next 12 months, also for increased ventilation in the mines.There are installed in the main power station three turbo alternator sets each of 5,000 kW.; normally two sets are run in parallel and one set is a standby unit. A 12,500 kW. set is being installed and proposed loading with the increased tonnage will require the 12,500 kW. set and one 5,000 kW. set, or alternatively, the three 5,000 kW. sets When the 12,500 kW. set is down for service. When the original plant was installed some 25 years ago, the switches selected and installed in the main 3,300 V. power plant switchboard were rated at 150 MVA and the substation distributing centres located at the surface of the mine, in the mill, and in the smelter, were purchased as having a rupturing capacity of 100 MVA, and the stator...

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history are being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations û both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage. Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point, they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history. Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The geotourism approach has allowed for positive collaboration among communities, service providers, local and government authorities to channel tourist revenues into rural communities. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost-effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products using multimedia and web sites. Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

Atlas Copco is a leading provider of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2007) and one of the worldÆs largest suppliers of rock drilling equipment. The business division of Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Technique is based in +rebro, Sweden with the majority of their equipment produced in a number of facilities within the area. As part of the 2006 AusIMM/Atlas Copco Scholarship I was fortunate enough to visit these facilities to experience first hand this truly unique global company. Through numerous presentations on the various divisions and products manufactured by the company, I saw the broad range of products and services offered by the company and came to realise it is much more than just selling drills. Other highlights included a brief love affair, a tour of EuropeÆs largest underground mine (or factory depending who you ask), a drink at the ice bar at the ice hotel in JukkasjSrvi, and a number of dinners of reindeer. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain (HVCC) consists of mining companies, rail operators, rail track owners and terminal operators, together forming the worldÆs largest coal exporting facility. In 2008, the throughput of HVCC was about 92 million tonnes, or more than ten per cent of the worldÆs total trade in coal for that year. The coal export operation generates around $15 billion in annual export income for Australia. As demand has increased significantly in recent years, and is expected to increase further in the future, efficient supply chain management is crucial. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator Limited (HVCCC) was founded to enable integrated planning and coordination of the interests of all parties, thus improving the efficiency of the system as a whole. One of the many planning challenges faced by the HVCCC is that of annual maintenance planning. Different supply chain elements, such as trains, railway track, terminal equipment and load points, must undergo regular preventive and corrective maintenance, leading to significant reductions in system capacity (up to 15 per cent). However good alignment of the maintenance tasks can reduce their impact, and the HVCCC undertakes an annual process to ensure the impact of maintenance on the supply chain capacity is as small as possible. This is achieved in an iterative negotiation process between HVCCC and individual service providers. In the past, maintenance schedule optimisation was largely manual, which for the more than 1000 tasks involved is quite labour-intensive.In this paper the authors describe an approach developed at the University of Newcastle in partnership with the HVCCC to automate this schedule optimisation process. We will discuss our experience in applying exact (mixed integer programming) and heuristic techniques from mathematics and computer science to address the problem. This work is anticipated to lead to new decision-support tools for the HVCCCÆs capacity planning team.
