LongWangGou coalmine auxiliary inclined shaft heading face has a large section, fast heading speed, and large dust production. The problems of high concentration and wide distribution of dust in the roadway air are very prominent. To improve the efficiency of roadway ventilation and dustremoval, long-compression and short-suction (after this referred to as LCSS) are adopted. The dust concentration and airflow field distribution in the roadway are numerically simulated by FLUENT. The change of the position between the pressure duct and the exhaust duct and the different pressure-extraction ratios affect the distribution of airflow velocity, the formation of vortex zone, and the distribution of dust concentration in the roadway. When Ly = 25 m, Lc = 5.0 m, W = 1.2, a wind curtain is formed at 5 m in front of the heading face to prevent dust from spreading deeper into the roadway.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017. Within the framework in which future exploitations for Codelco-Chile Divisi=n El Teniente are situated, regarding the deepening of its reserves and the geotechnical problems that affect their recovery, it becomes strategic to evolve with new variants, which make deep mining possible. Codelco ChileÆs Divisi=n El Teniente is progressing within its long-term planning the exploitation of a sector called Esmeralda, which includes its removal through the gravitational caving method (panel caving). It is planned to use pre-caving, which basically consists of developing and undermining the undercut level, without having developed the infrastructure of the production and transport levels. This is carried out in order to achieve a better redistribution of the stresses, thus obtaining higher quality in the infrastructure development of these levels as well as less risk. The extraction reserves for this area, estimated through the opportunity cost selection criteria, were determined at 348 million tons with an average grade of 1.014 per cent Cu. The project carried out geological and geotechnical studies in order to prevent the geomechanical risks of the sector to be exploited, which is a site conformed totally by primary ore. Lithologically, it occurs mainly in Andesite, located at the western limit by Brecha Braden Pipe. There are also varieties of porphyries and hydrothermal breaches of anhydrite. The Esmeralda Mine production program will increase from 4000 tpd (average) in 1998 to its 45 000 tpd rate of production estimated for the year 2005. The approved investment for the period 1995 to 1999 is $US 150 million, out of a total $US 213 million for the project. At feasibility study level and before the project, it showed a Net Present Value of $US 342 million, an Internal Rate of Return of 37 per cent and an IVAN indicator of 2.3 for a ten per cent discount rate and a copper price of 100 US cents/lb.

The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.

An inrush of water or mud into an underground mine, or sudden subsidence above mining voids represent low probability but high impact risks in underground mining. About two such incidents involving multiple fatalities or loss of production are reported each year worldwide. On average, Australia experiences one such incident every three to four years. This paper reports the development of a Standard that is intended to eliminate fatalities due to inrushes and subsidence.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

This paper points to the timely importance of commencing a centrally recognised perpetual collection of mineral specimens in the Northern Territory which has as one of its objectives the collection and preservation of Northern Territory minerals of scientific, educational and heritage value. Currently in the Northern Territory there is no government department or institution that has a resourced coordinated state-wide objective to collect and document collectable mineral specimens. Specimens held in storage by the Department of Mines and Energy and the Museum and Art Galleries of the NT are not catalogued and owe their existence to fortuitous circumstances, not as a result of a planned systematic scientific approach to mineralogy. Northern Territory mineral species and unique specimens have and will continue to be driven to extinction while no central and active, recognised repository exists. This situation persists despite the fact mineral production is the Territory's largest income earner. The paper presents the arguments that hopefully will assist decision-makers to commence development of a state mineral collection lodged within an appropriate institution in the Northern Territory.

The integration of digital twins in mining represents a significant advancement towards enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making. Central to this development is the role of visualisation, a crucial element in mining digitalisation. This paper aims to develop a data-driven visualisation solution for the construction of mining digital twins, highlighting how this innovation revolutionises the representation of physical mining environments. It spotlights the shortcomings of conventional visualisation methods, particularly their inability to accurately depict complex underground environments and their predominantly historical orientation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel, data-driven approach. This approach extensively utilises CAD files, encompassing data from geological surveys to intricate mine plans, thereby significantly elevating the precision of digital twins. It supports real-time updates and enables flexible interaction with a variety of data types. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive data diagram alongside the adaptation of a 3D tile index. This strategy ensures the efficient rendering of extensive mining environments, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive digital twin model. In conclusion, the implementation of data-driven visualisation in the construction of mining digital twins marks a pivotal advancement in the industry’s digital transformation. It promises a more detailed, accurate, and dynamic depiction of mining operations.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. The information age has arrived. In every aspect of life, at the end of the second millennium, computers and information technology have made significant inroads. In mining there has been huge growth in the use of digitally controlled systems. From resource evaluation to mine planning to daily operations, information is being acquired, analysed, modeled and presented, using state-of-the-art information technology. Explosives, too, have moved into the information age. Computer controlled trucks and manufacturing plants have been developed and are now a regular feature on many mine benches. The next challenge for the explosives industry as a whole is to integrate blast initiation with information technology. The benefits are there, both to the supplier and to the end-user. Much has been written in the past about the potential for blast improvement but there are other significant advantages to a digital initiation system. These include security from unauthorised use, stock control and minimisation, reliability through testability and ease of use to name a few. So why is it taking so long? Surely the complexity of an electronic initiation system is far less than that of mobile phones that have been around for a long time. The answer, it seems, lies in the level of new technologies that need to be developed. There are enormous technological hurdles to be overcome in order to put into the market a cost-effective, reliable, user-friendly electronic initiation system. The most significant of these are:Safely and reliably initiating an explosive from an electronic device powered by a small capacitor. Prior to the development of electronic detonators primary initiation of explosives was by shock tube spit or by passing large currents and voltages down a pair of wires. Electronic detonators do not have that luxury. For example the energy stored in a æBeethovenÆ exploder is more than 500 times greater than that available to an electronic detonator. Communicating to a multitude of devices over very long cables installed by miners in harsh conditions. The deployment of an electronic detonator system has been likened to building a large telephone exchange in the rain and getting it to work perfectly first time! New communications protocols needed to be developed and tested. Wiring and connection systems have to be designed to survive the mining environment. In spite of these technological hurdles most of the major explosives manufacturers have persisted with electronic initiation systems and we are now, in 1999, starting to see the results of these multi-million dollar efforts. At SMI we are often asked many questions about this technology. The remainder of this paper seeks to answer those most often asked. As with any business linked to information technology todayÆs breaking news is tomorrowÆs archive and we expect the rate of development and understanding to accelerate as these technologies become accepted by the global mining industry.

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in æconventionalÆ industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then provides practical examples of how a multi-disciplinary team can develop new processes and systems leading to productivity, safety and other benefits for underground coal mining.

Emphasis is placed on appointing key commissioning staff early in the project to coordinate the preparations for commissioning and on detailed planning and tracking to ensure that the required commissioning activities are performed satisfactorily. The management of safety during commissioning is reviewed.

Direct ship iron ore (DSO) operations at Extension Hill in Western Australia’s Midwest region have commenced, with fi rst product railed to the port of Geraldton in July 2011. Reserves are 14.8 million tonnes (Mt) of haematite-goethite ore overlying an Archaean BIF-hosted larger magnetite deposit which Mount Gibson Iron Limited (MGI) sold to other parties in 2006.Some unique geological aspects of the deposit shape DSO mining and processing operations. Owner-operator selective mining, blending, crushing and screening on site will produce three million tonnes per year (Mt/a) of Lump and Fines product to be trucked 86 km to Perenjori, railed 232 km to Geraldton, and loaded aboard Panamax-sized ships through the dedicated iron ore shiploader at the Geraldton Port Authority’s Berth 5 facility.The statutory approvals process for this project formally began in 2004, dominating delays in a predevelopment phase which extended over a longer period than the likely life of DSO operations. The lack of transparency, uncertainties and costs inherent in state government processes have influenced decisions made by MGI while assessing other development opportunities in Western Australia. Potential for additional Reserves exists at Extension Hill, however MGI’s ability to extend the mine life will hinge on statutory approval to explore for and evaluate other DSO resources on surrounding granted mining leases.The nature of the resource and use of existing infrastructure for product transport have enabled MGI to keep operating costs and capital intensity of this project relatively low. A tenacious development approach by MGI and robust project economics have fi nally enabled this site to take its place as a revenue earner beside the company’s other DSO operations at Tallering Peak and Koolan Island.

Comparison of the Proterozoic Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP) for Australia with the corresponding geology of northern Australia suggests that a number of discrete interplate tectonic events, manifested on the APWP as bends or inflections, may have controlled sedimentary basin evolution, ore fluid production and the timing of mineralisation. Similar features in the Phanerozoic APWP for the North American plate appear to correlate with major orogenic events, basin deformation, movement and 'entrapment' of hydrocarbons and minerals. Interplate tectonic events cause intraplate deformation which in turn controls the subsidence/uplift and sedimentation histories of the basins. Interplate events are thus responsible for creating, deforming and destroying sedimentary basins and the associated petroleum and mineral systems. The basins of northern Australia show remarkable similarities in the successions of volcanic and sedimentary deposits. Unconforrnities of regional or sometimes only local extent have been mapped between the major sedimentary sequences and it is predicted that interplate tectonic events corresponding to bends or inflections on the APWP directly reflect the processes that have produced these widespread unconformities. These processes are also likely to have controlled the geometry and character of the fluid migration pathways and hence the mineralising events. Palaeomagnetic studies of Proterozoic rocks in sedimentary basins provide a tool for predicting the timing of regional mineralisation events, particularly for low-temperature mineral systems. The techniques, when coupled with systematic regional basin analysis, using petroleum exploration techniques, may identify a number of new mineral 'plays' in northern Australia. Prominent inflections in the APWP occur at approximately 1700, 1670, 1650, 1600, 1540, and 1480 Ma. Each of these may be related to a regional compressional deformation, important mineralising event, or significant change in style and type of sedimentation. Most appear to be associated with magnetic overprints. Some of the inflections between 1400 and 540 Ma may also mark significant events in the evolution of Meso- and Neoproterozoic basins. Further work is required to correlate inflections in the APWP with alteration events in order to understand their regional significance.

Magnesium International Limited (MIL) has broken new ground in their desire to integrate their mineral development activities in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in to the communities of the region, despite there being no statutory requirement to do so. In their efforts to define a magnesite resource adjacent to the proposed site for a magnesium metal processing facility, MIL opened their exploration program up for public consultation. In conjunction with the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (PPRDB), a community group was formed to review the impact of exploration and mining on the ecologically sensitive Southern Flinders region. This voluntary move towards full community consultation for mineral exploration was a first in South Australia and probably in Australia. The Community Focus Group (CFG) worked closely with MIL, Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) in the development of an exploration program and Declaration of Environmental Factors (DEF) acceptable to all stakeholders. Collaboratively, the community concerns were discussed and addressed, with the community gaining a very comprehensive understanding of the exploration process and possible future mine development. A balance of social, environmental and economic factors was developed that was accepted by all parties and encapsulated in the final DEF for approval by the regulatory authority. The consultation process was a new experience for all of the stakeholders, each of them effectively exploring new ground in addressing information dissemination, risk management and the social versus economic equation. MIL developed not only a viable and acceptable exploration program but also substantially reinforced its position as a responsible corporate citizen with the Southern Flinders communities.

Ore sorting has the potential to reduce the feed to wet plants and in the case of complex orebodies that can significantly reduce the water, energy and reagent consumptions and resulting operating costs for the project. The application of ore sorters has sparked renewed interest and application in the precious and base metals mining industry in recent years as a result of the continuing development of new sensing technology and very fast information processing that is making ore sorters applicable to a much wider range of ores and larger scale operations. The application of ore sorters involves a range of trade-off decisions that have economic impact upon the benefits of ores sorting to the project under consideration. Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. A research project incorporating a number of mine site exercises to reduce the effects of fire incidents and possible consequent health and safety hazards has been undertaken focused on the application of mine fire simulation software packages for contaminate tracing and fire modelling in coal and metalliferous mines. This paper examines aspects of introduction of inert gases to underground workings to aid recovery of a mine following a fire. Broad conclusions from work undertaken at individual Australian coal mines are discussed as examples. The effort is built around the introduction of the fire simulation computer program æVentgraphÆ to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Case studies have been developed to examine usage of inertisation units and particularly application of the GAG jet engine unit. One example has focused on selection of the best surface portal location for placement of the GAG for most efficient suppression of a fire. A second has examined a situation with significant seam gas being emitted on the face. This has shown that under certain face dip angles stopping the mine surface fan to reduce dilution of GAG exhaust gases will cause reversal of face air and consequent mine explosion as gas laden air is drawn across a fire. A third examines inertisation and dilution issues in mains headings. mains headings present a complex ventilation network with often numerous parallel headings, hundreds of cut-throughs and a variety of ventilation control devices. In such a complex system (with additional interference from a fire), maintaining control of the movement of inert gas is more difficult than elsewhere in the mine. Some illustrations of this issue are given.

This analysis attempts to reconcile existing ecological theories, rehabilitation planning goals and implementation constraints in the form of a rehabilitation paradigm that considers potential and pragmatic ecosystem transformation pathways. The framework prioritises multiple developmental scenarios for post-disturbed landscapes within a continuum of ecological outcomes. A feature of the framework is that ænovelÆ ecosystems and agro-ecosystems, having a range of commercial and societal values, are valid outcomes spanning the conceptual divide between the ecological functions of under-rehabilitated versus re-instated ænaturalÆ landscapes, especially in a changing environment. Landscape suitability analyses are considered to be fundamental to the incorporation of regional landscape and climate in the implementation of land rehabilitation and management strategies. Altogether, the paradigm could facilitate the identification of widely pertinent rehabilitation goals having direct implications at the regional scale of restoration ecology and acceptance of the need for ongoing commitment to the management of disturbed environments.CITATION:Audet, P, Doley, D and Mulligan, D R, 2012. Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.
