The Argentine pyroclastic loess arevulcanogenic deposits, which have their sources in the circumnpacific rim. The object of this work is to realize a de-tailed mineralogical characterization of this sediments, to use it like a geo logic outline which regiters discordance or similarity in them, The sampling zone extend from 714N-4125 to 622W-339S. The descriptions of these sediments was considered like basic, mesobasic or acid rocks. The basic sediments, looking like andesite-basaltic composition, are fill-ing the andean valley. The mesobasic one have a similar composition with a pyro-clastic dacite rock, and have been found in marshy pleistocene sediments in the intermountain valley and in the pampeana prairies. The acid ashed conform rhyoda-cite-rhyolite sediments which form the pampeana loess covers in the prairie.

Drilling mineral sand deposits has specific challenges, which are different from drilling hard rock deposits: Drilled sequences are represented by non-consolidated free-flowing sands to semi-consolidated clayey sands and indurated layers. Valuable heavy minerals (ilmenite, rutile, zircon, leucoxene) have an average density of 4.6 g/cm3, which is significantly heavier than the hosting sand matrix; mainly represented by quartz (density = 2.6 g/cm3). The large difference in the mineral densities can result in sample segregation in the drilling rods and capturing devices causing biased composition of the recovered samples. The drilled strata can contain beds of consolidated sediments, hard pan lenses and concretions. Therefore, chosen drilling equipment should be flexible and permit a switch from drilling the free-flowing sands to hard rock drilling. Thickness of the sand hosted mineralisation varies from several metres to more than 170 m. Mineralisation is distributed above and below the water table. Evaluation of the mineral sands deposits is based on hundreds of drill holes and many thousands of samples, therefore drilling methods should be fast and cost effective. The drilling methods commonly used for mineral sand deposit evaluation, include aircore, triple tube diamond and sonic; including its variants, such as vibrocore drilling technique. The ability of the studied drilling techniques to properly address the above listed challenges in mineral sand deposits, whilst maximising the quality of the obtained samples has been compared in three deposits: Corridor Sands (Mozambique), Richards Bay (Republic of South Africa) and Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar).This study has shown that aircore samples tend to be negatively grade biased, underestimating the heavy minerals content, in particular when drilled intervals are located below the water table. Triple tube diamond core method can produce non-biased samples. However, results can be marred by incorrectly chosen drilling mud. Sonic drilling is a relatively new technique based on a high frequency vibratory technology. It is the only production drilling technique that allows a continuous relatively undisturbed sample of unlithified sands to be obtained. The main limitations of this technology preventing its wider use for developing mineral sand resources are the relatively high drilling costs, in particular when the depth of drilling exceeds 100 m, and speed of drilling advance.

The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. Brockman 2 mine is located in the Pilbara of Western Australia and is operated by Rio Tinto Iron Ore. Mineralisation is hosted by synclines where there is structural complexity to focus fluid flow. Mineralisation is hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation. Mining is on 10 m benches and blastholes spaced at 6 - 8 m apart are geologically logged, sampled by shovel cuts, and assayed using X-ray fluorescence for ten chemical variables. Blast blocks are digitised by mine geologists to assign destinations of material within blasts. Resource evaluation drilling is on a spacing of 50 m × 50 m across known mineralisation and consists of recent reverse circulation drilling and older open hole percussion drilling. Sampling of resource evaluation drilling is by rotary splitters or riffle splitters, and assaying is by X-ray fluorescence for ten chemical variables. Ordinary kriging of resource evaluation produces a long-term resource model. This study examines whether mine planning would be improved by using a blasthole estimate to extrapolate grades into deeper benches and merging the blasthole estimate with the long-term model made using resource evaluation drilling. The two estimates are merged into one model using an inverse weighting based on kriging variance. However, reconciliation results in a test bench show the original estimate made using resource evaluation drilling more closely matches mine geology block outs than does the merged model. This is due to a local trend of more high grade and higher iron grades of high grade in the area. The blasthole estimate of deeper benches must use extrapolation and it is diffi cult to take local trends into account. In contrast, the estimation using resource evaluation drilling is mainly interpolation and is better able to handle local trends.

Efficiency demands that mine geologists devote the most time to tasks where they can have the biggest effect on production. One of the most time-consuming tasks is geological interpretation of the orebody and turning this into a block model for the planning engineers.The current best practice for mines that require a geologically constrained resource model involves capturing the interpretation of geologists as three-dimensional (3D) wireframes. However, there is significant overhead in the production of valid wireframes from sectional and plan interpretations. This overhead consists of the mundane tasks of digitising polylines, then building 3D wireframes and validating them. While software can simplify this task, the current process is not the best use of a geologist’s time. Under time pressure exerted by planning engineers and the time required for modelling from polylines, geologists are forced to roll-up the presence of other elements or impurities into the interpretation and encode them in the polylines, even though it is often desirable to consider these other factors separately.While it might seem unlikely that mine geologists can produce constrained geological models without the intermediary of wireframes, the technology to accomplish this is getting closer.In this paper, the results of a trial at the Savage River magnetite mine, which is owned and operated by Grange Resources Ltd, are reported. The trial was for a ‘direct-to-block’ implicit geological modelling method. The focus was on creating a geological attributed block model from drill hole geological log data; resource estimates were not determined. The categories modelled were air, waste, low-grade ore, medium-grade ore, and high-grade ore. The block model outputs either resulted in a proportional block model (categories expressed as percentages within equivolumetric blocks) or a sub-blocked model (parent block and one sub-block), which is the preferred block model output at the Savage River mine. When compared to the traditional best practice modelling method, which takes 43 work days, the wireframe-free modelling method took only 26 hours from initial modelling, using both exploration and grade control data. An update using appended drill hole data is achievable within one day. These results represent time savings of more than one order of magnitude compared to the traditional workflow, and, as such, these figures merit serious consideration for the use of the direct-to-block modelling approach at other operations.With these time savings, geological and estimation models can be kept updated constantly; geologists will not need to set aside two months for quarterly or half-yearly modelling of the drill hole data for resource review. Such dramatic time savings will allow for the better use of highly skilled geologists, who are in short supply in the current market, and will also impact directly on downstream mining engineering workflows.

"Unconventional gas resources, including coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs, can be located above and below aquifers that provide groundwater for agricultural, industrial, urban and other uses. Development of these resources may, therefore, lead to potential impacts on groundwater supply.Management of reservoir/aquifer interconnections necessitates a program of focused data acquisition. For example, groundwater transfer from shallow aquifers to underlying CSG reservoirs may occur where CSG-containing units subcrop beneath shallow aquifers, possibly at significant distances from operating wells.Arrow Energy is undertaking studies of connectivity between aquifers including an investigation in collaboration with the Queensland Office of Groundwater Impact Assessment to evaluate connectivity between the Condamine Alluvium (CA) and CSG-containing Walloon Coal Measures (WCM).The Condamine Valley hosts highly productive agricultural land with groundwater resources heavily utilised for irrigation. Water demand outstrips available supply and groundwater has been subject to restrictions on further development since the early 1970s. Developments that could have an additional impact on groundwater resources in the CA are of major concern to local landholders. This paper describes: planned field investigations at two sites: 1. Stratheden, where pumping from the WCM will be undertaken 2. The Karara Mine concentrator commenced operation in November 2012 to produce high-grade magnetite concentrate. The circuit consists of three stages of comminution plus magnetic separation at each stage for early gangue rejection. High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) are used for fine crushing, followed by ball mills and TowerMills in secondary and fine grinding duties respectively. In recent times, the plant throughput rate has had to exceed design by 18% to maintain the targeted concentrate productivity. Meanwhile, the ore hardness has increased by 25% to 15 kWh/t, leading to changes in the circuit operation and design. These changes led to coarser and harder feed to the TowerMill circuit that affects the subsequent separation processes. Nippon Eirich (the TowerMill manufacturer) has partnered with Karara Mining Limited (Karara) to optimise the TowerMill circuit operation to achieve a circuit product with an 80% passing (P80) of 35 µm. Several activities, including a TowerMill circuit audit and performance evaluation, multi-component analysis, modelling and simulation, were carried out as part of the optimisation exercise. The circuit audit results revealed that the TowerMill circuit feed size F80 had increased and ranged from 67–75 µm. The circuit product P80 ranged between 42–55 µm. The average circuit specific energy was 3.4 kWh/t. Moreover, the differences in density between magnetite and gangue minerals had affected the hydrocyclone performance where the efficiency curve exhibits coarse end deflection indicating that low-density coarse material was bypassing to the overflow stream. A multi-component analysis was carried out to further investigate the coarse end deflection of the hydrocyclone efficiency curve. The analysis showed that the magnetite and gangue minerals had different cut sizes of 32 and 64 µm respectively. Furthermore, 33% of the magnetite (below 35 µm) was being recycled back to the mill due to the density effect. Based on these findings, several recommendations for process improvement were identified and implemented including:• converting to a bottom feeding configuration to improve the grinding efficiency in the mill• additional grinding power in the fine grinding duty to compensate for the increase in plant throughput and ore hardness• improved classification efficiency by converting to smaller size hydrocyclones. Simulation studies carried out to evaluate the impact of these implementations had indicated that a P80 close to 35 µm with a steeper size distribution could be achieved by using the bottom feed configuration with additional grinding power. The TowerMill circuit was converted to bottom feed configuration and the performance was evaluated. The operating work index, size specific energy and circulating load were 30% lower than the top feed configuration, indicating that the bottom feed configuration had a higher grinding efficiency. This paper discusses the outcome of the circuit audit, multicomponent analysis, circuit simulations, improvement strategies and quantification of the improvements. It is possible to closely simulate the product sizing distribution from an industrial rod mill by the correct choice of parameters in laboratory batch milling. For laboratory batch rod milling, changes in per cent critical speed and per cent rod volume cause the product sizing distributions to move in parallel at a constant slope. For ball milling, larger sized media in batch milling grind more coarse material giving a closer simulation to the industrial rod mill product. Changing the feed size distribution by removal of coarse particles or addition of fine particles changes the product sizing distribution, but would not normally be practiced in laboratory testing. These data should be applicable to many instances where laboratory simulation of an industrial product size distribution is required.

Following civil war in Sierra Leone, London Mining Plc obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. The Sierra Leone Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by a few companies since the 1930s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the preceding operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960s. There are two virgin ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings accumulated from previous operations. The Marampa tailings operation (Phase 1a) is being implemented first with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mt/a in a Phase 1b. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Further expansion (Phase 2) that includes the development of the virgin deposits is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production. Outotec partnered with London Mining to develop the magnetic separation flow sheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa tailings (haematite) material. The flow sheet development process started with sample characterisation and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flow sheet configuration, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, demonstrates the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit for iron ore tailings.

This paper describes how specific technical and regulatory issues related to water management have been dealt with at Anglo AmericanÆs Moranbah North mine. It compiles the collection of practices that have been implemented since 2010 in response to climatic and regulatory drivers. Operations must continually evolve as they face emerging challenges. For Moranbah North mine, one key challenge is the integration of its mine water system to that of its new neighbouring mine Grosvenor. The commitment to ongoing improvement has placed the mine in a good position to face this particular challenge.Water-related risks were identified then mitigated by technical practices, which have focused on improving underground water management, increasing storage capacity and installing a state-of-the-art control system for the management of water on-site and for releases of mine-affected water to the environment. These practices are supported by an extensive monitoring and audit system that provides confidence in the reporting of activities and outcomes. This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

The Northparkes, Endeavour 26 orebody is a porphyry copperûgold deposit and comprises a moderately to well jointed rock mass characterised by gypsum veining, the intensity of which decreases with depth. The top 480 metres of the orebody is currently being mined by block caving, the undercut dimensions measuring 196 metres in length by 180 metres in width. Continuous caving was never achieved after the completion of the undercut thus cave inducement techniques were sought to maintain caving so as to safely sustain production. The use of hydraulic fracturing as a cave inducement tool was successfully trialled in December 1997 using existing exploration boreholes located midway up the current lift. Subsequent fracturing campaigns have enjoyed various degrees of success and have yielded in excess of seven million tonnes of ore at a significantly lower cost than conventional cave inducement techniques. Monitoring of both the hydraulic fracture system and the rock mass response has provided considerable insight into the geometry, growth and influence of hydraulic fracture networks above the Northparkes block cave, and has initiated additional research into the use of hydraulic fracturing in other mining methods.

The Mt Sinivit gold project is located approximately 50km SSW of Rabaul in the Baining Mountains of the Gazelle Peninsula, East New Britain Province. The deposits were discovered in mid- 1983 and form part of a larger 26km long zone of variably aurif- erous quartz veining. There are no surface indications or previ- ous records of any prospecting activity or production from the region. The Mt Sinivit deposits consist of a series of oxide and sulphide reserves and resources contained in the Wild Dog (South- ern, Central and Northern oxide zones; Northern sulphide zone) and Kavursuki veins. The proposed exploitation of the oxide reserves by a series of small-medium sized open pits has been fostered by the PNG Department of Mining & Petroleum (DMP) as part of a government policy to encourage the development of a small-medium sized mining industry in the country. The aim of this paper is to document the steps and procedures involved in obtaining the grant of a Mining Lease emphasising the time and the expenditures required during each step of the approvals process for the Mt Sinivit project.

This paper briefly describes the construction in 1979/80 of a 70m deep trial open pit coal mine near Bowmans S.A. and describes more fully the hydrogeological aspects of the exercise. The primary purpose of the Trial Pit was to provide a large sample (700 tonnes) of coal for combustion tests to be carried out in West Germany and the United States of America. Consideration was given to obtaining the sample of coal by drilling and by shaft sinking as alternatives to open pit methods. It was expected that economic mining of the deposit on an operational scale could only be achieved by open cut methods and it was recognised that major uncertainties existed in planning such a mine in the deep unconsolidated multi-aquifer deposit. It was therefore elected to obtain the bulk sample by constructing a trial open pit, which would be closely monitored to provide as much data as possible for future planning of a full scale mine. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was achieved using 26 deep pumping wells, assisted in the later stages by several hundred well points. This was probably the largest dewatering project currently in operation in Australia.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

During a mineral exploration programme in an environmentally sensitive area near Mount Painter in South Australia, a helicopter was used to position, construct and service drilling rigs in order to avoid the need to create new access tracks. The drilling programme was designed to optimise the advantages of natural landforms in order to minimise the environmental impact of site construction and drilling activities. This minimisation of land disturbance reduced the required amount of rehabilitation measures to the extent where all impacts of the helicopter-supported programme had disappeared within twelve months of completion of work.
