This Institute, by nature of its charter, draws on various persons in the mining and metallurgical world of Australasia for its President from year to year, and consequently when the presidential address is given by one of these people the topic. which they generally select is a topic to which they are accustomed and on which they are able to speak with authority.As most of you know, my prime object in life has been concerned with steelmaking, so tonight you can steel yourself to the thought that you are going to be spoken to about steelmaking.Even if that were not the case, and were I not particularly interested in steelmaking, I think it would be appropriate to look at steelmaking in a broad sense on a basis of pure metallurgical interest, because the steel industry is going through as big a revolution today as it went through something over one hundred years ago when Bessemer made a theory become a fact.Bessemer, and as the Americans prefer to think Kelly, separately conceived the idea of blowing cold air through molten pig iron, and, contrary to the then general belief, this did not result in cooling of the metal but succeeded rather in heating it, and in burning out of the rather crude pig iron the impurities which prevented it from becoming a ductile metal.For many years before this, steel had been made in a very small painstaking way by what was known as the crucible process. The banded iron formations "jasper bars," jaspilites, banded hematite quartzites or banded ironstones, etc., as they have. variously been termed in Western Australia, constitute one of the most striking features of the Pre-Cambrian in this State. They occur in at least two distinct divisions of the Pre-Cambrian, viz., in horizons interbedded with quartzites, shales and thin bedded dolomite in the N~llagine (Proterozoic) Series; and amongst the Older Pre-Cambrian rocks, associated with the metamorphosed sediments of the Jimperding-Chittering Series, the Yilgarn Whitestone Series and the Mosquito Creek Series, and interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments of the Older prenstone or Kalgoorlie Series.In the Hamersley Ranges in the north-west of Western Australia banded ferroginous cherts are well developed amongst the horizontal sediments of Nullagine Age. These iron formations have recently sprung into prominence as they have been found to form the host rocks for important deposits of· blue asbestos. They are closely comparable with the unique crocidolite-bearing banded ironstones of the Cape Province, South Africa, and have been described elsewhere in some detail by the writer. (1) t .The banded iron formations with which it is intended to deal principally in the following pages, form most abundantly in the Central and Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia where they form portions of the Older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie Series of auriferous rocks. In these regions their chemical inertness and physical hardness provide considerable resistance to the agents of erosion and consequently they frequently stand out in strong topographic relief in otherwise monotonously flat or gently rolling country. These banded-iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and in other portions of the State because of thei!! associations with 'gold, iron -and to' a lesser extent, manganese; whilst indirectly because of their peculiar nature, form and topographic prominence, etc, they have been of tremendous assistance to the field geologist both in the practical application of methods of geological mapping and in the' elucidation of geological structures. Finally, they have recently acquired a new importance in the specialised search for ore-bearing lodes or for structural information over areas of soil-covered country, as their form and composition make them ideal subjects for the use of either electrical or m!1-gnetic methods of geophysical prospecting.

Development on the North Kalgurli mine has established a major penetration of ore into calc schist. This is controlled by a system of east-dipping strike faults. Previously, most calc schist ore bodies were regarded as being confined to the quartz dolerite greenstonecak schist contact environment.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most interesting and economically important developments which has taken place in the Kalgoorlie Field over the past 20 years is the proved penetration of ore into calc schist on the North Kalgurli Mine. This is quite extensive, both laterally and in depth, and has occasioned some modification of geological thought in the search for additional ore sources.Ore has been mined in calc schist almost since the first major gold discoveries were made and the principal features of the various types of deposit are well covered in the literature of the field. However, occurrences in calc schist have not been characterised by the same degree of continuity or frequency as the innumerable lode formations in the more favourable quartz dolerite, and there has been a tendency to regard them as isolated and discontinuous ore bearing structures, occurring only under very special conditions.It is not intended to describe the whole range of calc schist ore occurrences but only major controlling structures, whose penetration therein has been definitely established and in which an appreciable amount of ore has been and is still being found. It is considered that similar structures may present a major objective for future exploratory work in other parts of the field.

Entry of personnel under a vertical raise bored hole is not standard practice in Australia. Where access is required below a rise, mining operations must be confident that they understand the capacity of the ground control specified and installed. Physical modelling was conducted on Callie mine to evaluate the performance of 5 mm steel wire weldmesh secured to the base of a vertical raise bored hole of 1.4 m diameter. Joint orientation data was used with Unwedge to calculate a series of potential wedges likely to form within the rise. The mass of the most likely wedges were then replicated by collecting rocks in 5 kg increments (¦10 per cent), which were allowed to freefall onto installed mesh at the base of a 40 m vertical rise. The results indicate that two sheets of mesh can retain a freefalling rock of at least 20 kg mass although rupture of strands can result. This paper outlines the test conditions, expected results based on theoretical calculations and actual outcomes of the testing.

The richer, shallower sapphire deposits of the New England region of New South Wales which have been traditionally mined by the small miner are almost worked out. Larger mining and exploration companies are replacing the small miner and exploring for the primary source of sapphire or lower grade alluvial deposits.   Although in recent years considerable exploration effort has been directed at locating the primary source, commercial exploitation of sapphire is still restricted to the working of alluvial deposits.   If the Australian industry is to compete against Asian and African producers it must use cost effective exploration, mining) processing and marketing methods.

For deep block and panel caving mines, undercut or extraction level instability can have as much impact on overall recovery as underbreak or the premature ingress of waste. If the area of the mine affected by excessive convergence is small, recovery is usually possible. However, there are several examples of entire blocks that were abandoned prematurely due to footprint collapse. Clearly, such global instability has a major impact on recovery and must be avoided – this is one of the essential tasks for the design team.The design problem is complex. The planning engineer must ensure that the footprint has sufficient capacity to withstand the maturing loads in the cave, accounting for the effects of stress path, geological structures and the rock mass conditions. These are often uncertain and only sometimes quantified.The demand on the footprint will also be influenced by decisions and actions taken during production, especially related to draw, which can worsen a developing problem. Perhaps most importantly, the design decisions that favour stability and lead to lower deformation also negatively impact on idealised cave flow. Many engineers aim to minimise the size of extraction level pillars, to improve theoretical future resource recovery but in fact this can reduce recovery if widespread deformation ensues due to the undersized pillars.In 2014, PT Freeport Indonesia undertook detailed numerical analysis to quantify the effects of variability in rock mass conditions and geological structure on overall footprint performance. The analysis accounted for a range of stress paths and maturing cave loading scenarios sourced from a calibrated whole-of-cave deformation-flow model. The intent was to replicate some of the diversity and distribution of pillar deformation outcomes that may be seen in practice at Freeport.The discontinuum finite element analysis was able to replicate damage localisation around persistent structures, a realistic distribution of drive deformation and show how small areas of instability can evolve into major problems if poorly managed. The limits of pillar size and ground support as solutions to a number of different instability problems was also investigated, showing that pillar size alone was not a sufficient remedy for all adverse circumstances.In this paper, we describe the workflow for numerical analysis of footprint deformation. The following data cover a phase in the systematic testing of gold deposits which does not appear to have been specificalIy investigated.In boring either secondary or primary deposits, gold, by virtue of its high specific gravity, will tend to migrate downward, below the driving shoe or bit, and thus cause misinterpretation of value unless final recovery Can be effected after the hole has been bottomed.Unlike fortuitous and non-recurrent errors, due to, say, running ground, "pile driving" or rock fractures, systematic error due to migration may be unpredict.able from operating data alone, and, therefore, result in serious miscalculation of the weighted average upon which the engineer's recommendation is based.Applied to diamond drilling, loss by downward migration appears to have been largely responsible for distrust of sludge assays in the past. On the other hand, although modern practice rightly trends towards an integration of both core and sludge samples in borehole valuation, the possibility of systematic loss must be investigated when using combination graphs such as those of Longyear, Moehlman and WeIler. If the sludge value is incorrect the combination graphs will serve solely to stultify the core valuation.It appears to be axiomatic that: 1. With full core, sludge assays are of minor import.2. With recovery above 90%, differentjal grinding, of the high grade sections may have occurred, and this c!ln be corrected only by the us.e of cOJ;rect sludge valuation.3. With core recovery less than, say, 70%, no accurate valuation is possible without integrating the sludge assay.4. With less than, say, 10% core recovery, the sludge assay affords the sole basis of evaluating a borehole which may have cost many hundreds of pounds.The conditions demanded for reliable sludge valuation have, in practice, been restricted to high quantitative recovery and return of nearly 90% of the drill water. It is submitted, however, that the following additional knowledge is required:1. The nature of gold distribution in the ore.2. The lifting power of the return water column, which can be gauged by the maximum quartz particle, provided that the degree of "hindrance" can be determined.3. That all gold has been cleared from the bottom of the borehole immediately after it has passed through the orebody.The three cases discussed hereunder are offered not only as proof of the thesis, but also in the hope of promoting discussion on the interpretation of borehole values and on methods for saving free gold in the sludge. The fact that two of them cover alluvial boringand the third diamond drilling has resulted in this attempt to reduce the behaviour of free gold to a basis common to all types of boring.

Simulation modelling is a practice commonly used in the mining industry to evaluate alternative process designs. Such modelling is typically undertaken as an optimisation study to increase the efficiencies, productivity and product quality of operating mines. In this situation, real short-term grade variability data of extracted ore are available from production records as input data into the simulation.There is also a need for simulation modelling to be performed before mines are approved for construction to clarify the grade variability characteristics that can be expected from the operating mine and assist in the optimisation of the process design. In this situation no historical short-term grade variability data are available. To achieve meaningful and reliable results from a simulation it is necessary to have input data for the ore to be extracted from the pits, representative of the short-term grade variability that would be expected for the operating mine.This paper describes an example of a path taken to generate realistic input data.A method described as composite cut-off criterion was used to distinguish ore from waste, which gave substantially greater recovered tonnage at target grade compared to the conventional quadrant cut-off grade criteria.The only data available for the project was resource model data in the form of kriged block models, which are known to underestimate true ore grade variability. To achieve realistic results from the simulation it was essential to increase this variability while maintaining the accurate average grades. Areas of certain deposits that were modelled using both kriging and conditional simulation estimation techniques were quantitatively compared to establish the comparative variance and the kriged data was modified to match the conditionally simulated variance.A realistic mining model was generated via a process of discretisation and regularisation of the resource blocks. Quantitative assessment demonstrated that this method adequately compensated for ore dilution and that adjustment for ore loss was not required due to an ore skin surrounding the edge blocks.The conditioned data was then used to generate a schedule of daily mine extraction, considering grade variability, tonnage, equipment constraints and extensive blended-in-blended-out precrusher stockpiles to feed into the process design simulations.For the precrusher stockpiles a number of alternative allocation criteria were examined for ore being extracted from the pits to identify the best method in achieving reduced variability through the daily scheduling system. The study concluded that a single analyte separation criterion produced acceptable variability with minimal complexity.The blending efficiency of manually stacked and reclaimed precrusher stockpiles was studied to determine a realistic blending efficiency within the pile. A recommended method of building and reclaiming was determined to give maximum blending efficiency.Finally, the data was used as input into process design simulation models; simulation from crusher feed to shiploading demonstrating that control of shipment grade variability was achievable and that the conditioning of the data delivered realistic results.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. Open cut coal-mining has been conducted in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland for almost five decades, and has disturbed an estimated area of 140 000 ha of agricultural land until 2011. Approximately one-third of the area disturbed by mining has been rehabilitated to pastures or bushland. However, none of the rehabilitated land has yet been assigned a specific end-use. This research project develops an approach for assessing end-use risks for the regionÆs mined land, and develops risk assessment models for selected end-uses. First, a web-based survey of stakeholders was used to identify risks to be assessed. The risks identified were surface erosion, subsurface erosion, bushfires, weeds and feral animals. The survey also identified possible end-uses of bushland and grazing. Second, conceptual risk models were developed based on the risk assessment concepts of likelihood and consequence specified in the Australian and New Zealand risk assessment standards. Likelihood was modelled using site characteristics and management factors that influence the occurrence probability of risks (eg surface erosion), while consequence was modelled using a set of site condition indicators and condition thresholds (changes in root-zone water-holding capacity, soil erodibility, vegetation ground cover and soil organic matter and transition probability to a non-preferred ecosystem type).The factors influencing likelihood and consequence for each risk have been integrated using Bayesian networks. The next step in model development is to parameterise the Bayesian networks using existing equations, empirical datasets, or expert opinion where data are not available. The parameterised models will be used to assess grazing and bushland end-uses against erosion, bushfire, weed and feral animal risks for rehabilitated mined land sites, with the purpose of identifying the relative risks associated with each end-use, and the landform design specifications and land management practices under which end-use risks are minimised.CITATION:Maczkowiack, R I, Smith, C and Erskine, P D, 2012. This paper examines the integration of risk management into the design philosophy of a project to produce a æzero baseÆ design, which targets a minimum capital cost without adversely impacting upon the operating costs of the resulting plant. The concept of zero base design is similar to zero base budgeting and the desired outcome is to improve the economy of the design. Design requirements are questioned in an attempt to distinguish preference, prejudice and myth from necessity. Where doubt remains a risk management approach is adopted. The key to risk management is not risk elimination, but risk mitigation. Risks can be managed by designing them out, but often this involves considerable capital cost penalties and it is more attractive to accept the risk and design an operating strategy to deal with it. The paper discusses this with some examples of real world risk mitigation strategies that resulted in substantial capital cost savings. The paper concludes that as much as a quarter of project capital costs can be eliminated by a combination of zero base design and carefully crafted risk mitigation strategies.

An 8 ha trial landform was constructed in late 2009 at the Ranger Uranium Mine, located 250 km east of Darwin in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. The objective of the trial, which comprises two surface cover types on a uniform two per cent slope, is to provide long-term data to guide the development by Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) of its landform closure strategy. The scope of the work program for the landform includes many aspects; however, this paper is focusing on run-off and erosion rates. The run-off and erosion rates are used to assess the long-term geomorphic stability by comparing measured with modelled export rates from a landform evolution model.Monitoring of wet season run-off is undertaken collaboratively by the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) and ERA, on four purpose-instrumented 30 m by 30 m erosion plots. Continuous measurements are made in rectangular broad crested (RBC) flumes located at the outflow of each plot, of water level, turbidity (a surrogate for fine suspended sediment) and electrical conductivity (EC) (a surrogate for solutes). Each plot has a tipping bucket pluviometer located near the RBC flume. Bed load is collected monthly.This paper reports the findings of rainfall and bed load from the first two wet seasons (2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011) following construction. The field measured loads will be compared with the predictions made by the Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR) landform evolution model. Initial results indicate that predicted rates of sediment export from the CAESAR model are similar to measured export rates. This provides confidence in the capability of the model to predict stability of the future rehabilitated mine area, especially during the critical initial years following construction. Pyrite is ubiquitous within copper ores, and presents significant challenges to most operations in terms of its impact on copper sulfide concentrate grade and recovery.Samples of ore containing from 3 to 47 percent pyrite, with nominally the same chalcopyrite feed grade, were collected from a copper mine in eastern Australia for testing. The ores were ground under standard conditions using forged steel grinding media in the Magotteaux Mill® to determine the impact of increasing pyrite feed grade on the pulp chemistry of the system and subsequent rougher flotation response. Attempts were made to correlate the pulp chemical parameters (oxygen demand and EDTA extractable metal ions) with flotation behaviour to determine if one (or more) could be used as a metric to infer metallurgical behaviour.The observations made were then tested under different grinding environments (obtained using more electrochemically inert high chromium) grinding media to determine if they hold true.CITATION:Greet, C J, Karageorgos, P and Teixeira, L, 2015. This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. Two events during the past decade have combined to effectively alter the role of the geologist working in Papua New Guinea. The gold boom of the 1980s resulted in a substantial increase in the general awareness at village level of mining companies, gold and landowner issues, and as a consequence of the Bougainville tragedy, landowners are also very much aware of the potential problems of a mining operation in their area. Landowners know they have the power to remove a company from a project area, and government has shown itself to be virtually powerless and unable to help the company effectively. During a considerable proportion of a project's development time, the project geologist is viewed in the eyes of the local community as the 'company'. Good landowner relationships are nurtured over a reasonable time period and the input of the geologist is significant in determining the eventual fate of company-landowner relationships. The initial impressions of the company, gathered by the local community, will have a far reaching impact on the nature and direction of their future exchanges with the company.

As part of a continuing study of mechanisms of breakage, the grinding at Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. was traced by the addition of barytes and the results compared with parallel small scale laboratory tests. It was confirmed that the same basic mathematical functions described the behaviour of the full scale ball mill as those established in the small scale mill. However, an additional classification function was required to define the behaviour for the rod mill and was evaluated as a function of size from the experimental data. The classification and grinding of the pyrites ore was assessed from steady state size distributions around the circuit.

It is generally recognised that slags are active participants in pyrometallurgical processes, and not merely inert liquids which must be produced. to effect separation of gangue material in smelting, or of impurities in refining. The importance attached to slag-metal reactions in steelmaking is shown by the numerous investigations in this field. However, there are still many important reactions of slags which require explanation. In this paper some new aspects of the reactions of slags will be discussed, as far as possible quantitatively.FREE AND COMBINED OXIDESMetallurgical experience indicates that variations in the composition of slags produce changes in the chemical behaviour of the various components. These variations have been generally ascribed to changes in the proportions of free and combined oxides, i.e., compounds have been assumed to be present in the liquid slag.Considerable support for this view has been adduced from the existence of compounds such as metallic silicates, phosphates, etc., in the solIdified slag. Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. State ownership of minerals results in domestic legislation regulating mining operations. The mining industry today is dominated by a number of transnational companies, each subject to internal and external pressures for a more responsible approach to resource management. Thirty to 40 major companies are responsible for the bulk of the worldÆs mineral production with the balance coming from state-owned, second tier and junior companies and from artisanal miners.Mining companies operating within competitive commercial environments formerly focussed on mineral production. Companies worked to standards and expectations then current which largely failed to recognise the impact of mining activities on community interests. The mining industry acquired a reputation for arrogance, and for placing profitability ahead of issues considered equally or more important by local communities. Current perceptions continue to reflect disquiet about industry attitudes towards traditional land-owners and access to their lands, to environmental contamination, handling and storage of waste materials, utilisation of water and electricity, and to rehabilitation of worked out areas. Major international mining companies concerned at continuing criticism sponsored a series of initiatives with the objective of providing guidance on working harmoniously within the community. Industry commissioned studies, performed through the agency of disinterested parties, resulted in May 2002, in a Declaration being issued at an International Conference in Toronto. The Declaration was based on, but did not reflect all of the recommendations of the MMSD Report, æBreaking New GroundÆ.This paper considers whether benefits would result from the negotiation of a legally binding and enforceable international protocol encompassing the objectives of the MMSD report or the Toronto Declaration. It attempts to identify the problems associated with implementing and enforcing international mining law, should it be introduced. Aspects of mining operations having cover under customary international law are reviewed, as are rights, obligations and remedies for breaches of national mining law. Conclusions are drawn based on established procedures relating to implementing international agreements. The continuing ability of mining companies to operate within communities will result from each satisfying the communityÆs expectations rather than by complying with largely unenforceable legislation.

The Corridor ore body is so named because it occurs in an east-west zone or corridor of schist bounded on the north by the siliceous conglomerates of Mount Lyell, and on the south by similar conglomerates of the Tharsis ridge (Fig. 1). It was discovered after the geophysical prospecting methods described below had defined a target zone for diamond drilling.Since the proving of copper mineralisation by drilling, the corridor orebody has served the vital function of a convenient known target body for the orientation of more recently developed geophysical methods. Traversing of the orebody by these new methods has provided experience for the evaluation of anomalies elsewhere.Some of the methods applied had not been used in Australia before, and were introduced to the west coast of Tasmania through the undertaking there of modern regional exploration programmes. The authors feel that the information gained could be of assistance to others engaged in geophysical prospecting.HISTORY OF DISCOVERYProspecting in the Mount Lyell district has been more or less continuous since 1881. The first geological report was published by Thureau (1886).In 1934, Blazey and Douglas (1934-38) commenced geophysical surveys at Mt.
