Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. is the largest lead-zinc mine in Japan and is composed of two mines, Tochibora Mine and Mozumi Mine, which have daily production rates of 5,200 metric tons and 1,800 metric tons of crude ore respectively. In the mines, there are many massive pyro-metasomatic deposits which have been derived from the replacement of limestone. The deposits are composed of skarn minerals which mainly contain hedenberite. The country rock is generally hard and fine-grained gneiss. These deposits have been mined by means of the sublevel stoping method, induced block caving method and sublevel caving method at Tochibora Mine and mainly by the cut and fill method at Mozumi Mine. Since the 19601s, the trackless mining system has been introduced successfully into both mines, and is still promoted to be applied over wider areas. The underground hauling system is simplified remark- ably and much improved by adopting trackless ramps to the existing vertical and horizontal underground framework. Moreover, through the combination of the trackless mining system with the mining methods stated above, a notable increase in efficiency has been achieved. This is due to the high performance of the introduced machinery, reductions in man power of miscellaneous jobs, and also has enabled a highly efficient performance through its mobility. In addition, as it becomes possible to realize a flexible development to meet the irregularly shaped deposits and also becomes much easier to recover the remaining pillars by secondary mining, the extraction rate of ore has been improved considerably. With the introduction of the trackless mining system, the development method has been changed, thus former hand-hold leg-drills are now mostly re- placed by jumbo-type drills. Repair shops for Load-Haul-Dump machines also have been provided with an established service system. Reinforcement and rearrangement of the ventilation system has been carried out.

8.1-1. History and Description of Shovels. The history of excavating machinery is not clearly defined but the machines seem to have been originally developed for dredging activities, principally involving rivers and harbors. The first, as far as can be determined, was a steam "spoon dredge" developed by Grimshaw of Boulton and Watt of Sunderland, England, in 1796. The land machine forerunner of the present-day power shovel was not developed until 1835. It was invented by William Smith Otis, a young partner of a Philadelphia contracting firm by the name of Carmichael and Fairbanks. The moving force behind this invention was the heavy activity in railroad construction. From this early start the power shovel has developed from steam powering to internal-combution-engine powering and to electric powering. In both directions it has developed to its present state of a finely engineered and precision-built tool. Through the interim the railroad-type shovel, about a half-swing arrangement designed especially for making railroad cuts and mounted on rails, was developed. The rail-mounted shovel gradually gave way to the full revolving shovel. It was high on the list in 1912 and was practically extinct by 1927. From the beginning, a few of the small revolving shovels designed primarily for the general contractors' market had found their way into quarry and mining operations. During this same period, the stripping shovel had been introduced-a 2 ½ cu. yd., 100-ton, full revolving stripping machine with a 41 ft boom. Although this shovel was designed especially for stripping, it was also used for heavy-duty, open pit mining service. In 1925 the heavy-duty, full revolving quarry and mine machine was developed. Strip mining shovels evolved through a somewhat separate path. Anders Richard Akerman entered the eternal rest on Feb. 23, 1922, after a long and distinguished career. All mining men in Sweden arc mourning him, because he was one of their greatest and a leader in the scientific metallurgy of the iron. He was born April 18, 1837, in Stockholm, where his father, Joachim Akerman, was a professor at the Technical University, but the greater part of his childhood was spent in Falun, where the family moved after his father was made principal of the mining academy. He was at first taught by a tutor, but in 1851 entered the high school in Vesteras and the University of Uppsala in 1855, from which he graduated as a mining engineer on Dec. 11, 1860. A week later, he entered the service of the Department of Commerce and entered the mining academy at Falun, from which he graduated Dec. 15, 1862. The following May, he was accepted as a student in the metallurgical section of "Jernkontoret" (the "Iron Institute") and on Oct. 22, 1864, he was made an assistant in the same section. Thus begun the cooperation with the Iron Institute which was to continue for so many years and to bear such rich fruit. He had, however, previously received two requests from the Iron Institute: One to assist Prof. V. Eggertz in the preliminary work of preparing a handbook on blast-furnace practice, the other to make a complete index of the proceedings of the Iron Institute ("Jernkontorets Annaler") volumes 1817-1864, which index was published in 1866. On Oct. 19, 1865, Akerman was requested by "Jernkontoret" to give during 1866, lectures in the metallurgy of iron at the mining academy of Falun, as Prof. V. Eggertz wished to devote his entire time to the study of assaying. This request was renewed Oct. 15, 1867, for the year 1868, and on April 17, 1869, he was made instructor in metallurgy and mining at the Technical University, to which institution the higher education in mining engineering was transferred at that time. Akerman thus entered his career as a teacher, which lasted until the end of 1891. On May 11, 1877, he was appointed assistant professor in metallurgy and mining; on Sept. 7, 1883, he was appointed acting professor in the same department; and two weeks later was appointed dean of the mining college. On May 21, 1874, he was instructed by the Crown to inspect the mining schools in Filipstad and Falun. As a teacher, Akerman was very popular and his lectures were excellent, in form as well

The German Kaiser is employing the keenest engineering talent of his own and allied empires in his attempt to defeat the world. American employers are paying engineers such attractive salaries that voluntary enlistments of high class technical men in the United-States Army, are below requirements. This deficiency is also probably due in part to the lack of proper information concerning the engineering branch of the service. Few civilians know that it is possible for them to perform in the Engineering Corps almost exactly the same kind of work as that in which they are now engaged. The best results in any organization are obtained only when the energy of every man in it is concentrated along the line for which he is best suited by natural ability, education, and training. It. is more important to have the right man in the right place in our Army, where lives of men are at stake, than it is in any business enterprise. The First Replace meat Regiment of Engineers was organized at Washington Barracks, D. C., on Dec. 14, 1917, with the express idea of accomplishing this. end. Its specific, purpose is to keep all engineering units of the Army at full enlistment strength during the period of this war. This regiment has not only the responsibility of finding men to fill depleted ranks, but it must also fit them to step into the work of trained, efficient and disciplined soldiers. The preliminary work of the recruit is first a thorough training in military drill, for the engineer soldier must be prepared to lay down his shovel and take up his rifle at any time. Infantry drills gradually give way to engineer work and more specific technical training. The. engineer soldiers must know how to tie knots and lashings, to build spar and truss bridges, to construct revetments, dig trenches, place wire entanglements, construct machine-gun emplacements, build pontoon bridges, and to construct roads: They must, also know the methods of demolition, sapping, and mining. Specialized training in lithography, zincography, surveying, mapping, photography, carpentry, blacksmithing, electricity, and machinery, are also given to those qualified for further training in any of these branches. Engineers are called upon to perform such a wide range of work that practically every man with any technical training or mechanical ability can find a place in this organization. Every male citizen in the United States who is physically fit, and between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 and 40, is eligible to join the regiment by voluntary enlistment.

WORLD WAR II has developed a use for the nonmetal mineral quartz crystal that was unknown in World War I. During the interim period of peace, experimental work in the radio field with the piezoelectric properties of quartz crystal resulted in the almost universal adoption of quartz-crystal radio oscillator plates to control frequency in radio broadcasting, police, commercial and amateur communications equipment. Telephone resonators and filters made from quartz crystal also were developed, which vastly improved the frequency control of long distance telephone circuits. EXPANSION OF THE INDUSTRY The sudden war demands of the armed services for radio equipment using quartz crystal for frequency control led to an unprecedented expansion of the manufacturing industry. It is estimated that the 1940 peacetime volume amounted to approximately $1,500,000, while today a vast new quartz-crystal industry supplies more than $150,000,000 worth of quartz oscillator plates to the Army and Navy each year. This demand has caused an enormous expansion not only of American manufacturing facilities but also of Brazilian mining output, virtually our only source of raw quartz crystal. Actual figures of imports and consumption cannot be cited, for security reasons, but certain comparisons have been made, which indicate the transformation of quartz crystal from a minor to a major nonmetal. Lends has shown that the value of quartz-crystal exports from Brazil is now about equal to that of phosphate rock produced domestically in 1941 and actually exceeds the combined value of crude feldspar, gypsum and fluorspar production in the United States in the same year. This great expansion under wartime pressure was not accomplished without some anxious moments, but all the demands of industry have been met and the Government has been able also to accumulate a substantial stock pile of material against future contingencies. INSPECTION AND GRADING OF QUARTZ CRYSTAL The swift growth of the quartz-oscillator industry necessitated the simultaneous evolution of methods and criteria for inspecting and grading quartz crystal. It has been found that, generally speaking, it is economically feasible to cut only crystals that are at least 30 per cent by volume free from major defects such as optical and electrical twinning, cracks and fractures. Blue needles, bubbles, "chuva" and other minor imperfections can be tolerated in the usable portion unless present in great excess. The present marketing system in use in both Brazil and the United States, as far as quality is concerned, depends solely on the "usability" of a crystal, which is defined in the Brazilian-American agreement2

produced when zinc is substituted for a certain amount of tin are decidedly unsatisfactory. The substitution of aluminum for tin is entirely impractical, and such castings are worthless. This does not, however, exhaust all the possibilities of substituting other metals for tin in the copper-tin-lead alloys, but it is my opinion that the substitution of any other metals, in those alloys, can be made only by sacrificing the quality of the alloy. The possibility of substituting alloys of an entirely different type presents an attractive field for research. The copper-tin-lead alloy has attained its position as the most desirable bronze bearing alloy, but this does not mean that some other alloy may not be found which may give equally good or better results. In the search for such a substitute alloy it should be borne in mind that a bearing metal should possess the following properties: (1) It should be sufficiently rigid to support the load or resist the impact, but yet not so brittle that it will easily crack. (2) It should have as great a yielding or plastic nature as is consistent with its ability to support the load or resist the impact without deformation of the bearing as a whole. (3) The ideal structure combines a hard matrix to support the load and a softer metal or alloy contained within such matrix, to permit the bearing surface to adjust itself to irregularities of service. (4) It should be easy to handle in the foundry and machine shop. (5) It should be capable of being remelted without deterioration. (6) For use in babbitt-lined bearings, it should be capable of being tinned, so that the babbitt can be applied thereto. (7) It should have good heat conductivity in order to dissipate the heat generated by friction. Pennsylvania Railroad Anti-friction and Bell Metals F. M. Waring," Altoona, Pa.—Thc necessity for conserving tin has recently been very forcibly brought to the attention of all consumers, and efforts are now being made to reduce the tin content in certain alloys or to substitute other alloys not containing tin. The approximate composition of the non-ferrous alloys in general use on the Pennsylvania Railroad are given in the accompanying table. Phosphor bronze is used principally for rod bushings, main-rod brasses, and crosshead shoes. Ex. B bronze is used to a small extent for backs of car and coach bearings, but the majority of these are now made of the car-journal bronze, which contains, on the average, about 5 per cent. tin.

The Telfer Project, one of the world's newest gold mines, is located about 300 km (190 miles) northeast of the Mt. Newman iron ore project in the northern part of Western Australia. The first mineral claims were staked in 1972; and by mid-1975 ore reserves of 3. 8 million mt (4. 19 million st) of 9.6 g per mt (0. 28 oz per st) ore had been indicated. It is interesting to note that Newmont spent more than 10 years and A$10 million in Australia for extensive mineral exploration before finding the Telfer deposit, and then spent approximately A$3 million in exploration and feasibility engineering on Telfer. Including this A$3 million, a total of A$27 million was spent to complete construction of the mine, village, gold treatment plant and associated roads, airport, water and services. Over 50% of the capital cost is in the metallurgical facility, or approximately A$10, 000 per ton per day. All economically significant gold mineralization at Telfer occurs in a series of layered quartz-limonite reefs in which the former pyrite has been oxidized to limonite to a depth of 100 m (330 ft). The most important gold reef occurs at the base of the siltstone-shale horizon within the enclosing sandstone dome -like structure. At the Main Dome structure the dipping ore horizons will be mined to a vertical depth of about 60 m (200 ft) by open-cut methods. The waste-to-ore ratio is approximately 12:1. Eventually 44 million mt (48. 5 million st) of ore and waste will be mined. Mining of the waste is by contract; however, the ore and a thin layer of waste is company-mined. Dilution from mining the geological ore reserve is about 10%. The ore is completely oxidized and the gold occurs free within the reef, material as discrete particles of varying but mainly fine grain size. Most of the gold is "free milling"; that is, over 50% of the gold is coarse enough to be recoverable by gravity concentration. Two duplex mineral jigs receive the two cyclone underflows from the grinding circuit. The rougher jig concentrate is up-graded on a continuous strake from which the concentrate is tabled to produce a final free gold product. Jig tailings are returned to the ball mill and the concentrates are amalgamated. Gold amalgam is pressed, retorted, and melted into gold bars. The gravity gold recovery circuit is the same as was used in many of the gold mills in California in the 1930s.

THE rapidly increasing use of machinery for the mining of coal and operations incidental thereto has materially changed conditions from a safety standpoint. A few of the coal-producing states have recognized the need for specialized electrical equipment for use in mines and have introduced certain requirements in their State safety regulations, notably Pennsylvania. This paper discusses the principal problems involved in maintenance of such equipment. PERMISSIBLE: EQUIPMENT "Permissible" electrical equipment is equipment that has met certain prescribed standards for use in mines where hazardous conditions may occur and has been recommended by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Such machinery is available on the market for most coal-mining operations--for instance, coal cutting, transportation, drilling, loading, working-place illumination, shot-firing and pumping. A notable exception is the trolley-reel gathering locomotive which, although its parts may be explosion-tested by the Bureau, has not been approved as permissible for the following reasons: I. The trailing cable is subjected to more severe service than on other equipment. 2. State regulations do not require that a working place be examined for methane before a locomotive enters it. 3. Even with two-conductor cable, imperfect or inadequate bonding may cause the emission of sparks at the wheels of the locomotive and at rail joints. 4. As the locomotive is equipped with a trolley pole, and as the trolley wire may be installed and used in unsafe territory in spite of rigid State regulations, a trolley-reel gathering locomotive is always a potential hazard. MAINTENANCE The proper procedure for maintenance of permissible equipment may be divided into three parts: (I) inspection, (2) actual maintenance and (3) changes or improvements to existing machines. To secure the fullest benefits through the use of permissible equipment it is necessary that all men involved understand the principles underlying the safety features of this equipment and realize the significance of defects, so that neglect and indifference in the maintenance thereof may be eliminated. Inspection From the standpoint of safety it is desirable no doubt to make a suitable inspection of permissible electrical equipment once a week, but the opening of every enclosed compartment at each inspection may do more harm than good. The openings to such compartments are closed with various types of covers very accurately machined, often made of the softer alloys to reduce weight, and fastened with a multitude of bolts, screws, washers, and other small parts. Frequent handling of these covers may cause sufficient damage to defeat their original purpose and intent.

Dr. Robert Bell died on June 18, 1917, at Rathwell, Manitoba, in the seventy-seventh year of his age. He was born in Toronto on June 3, 1841, and was a son of the Reverend Andrew Bell of the Free Church of Scotland. He was educated at the Grammar School of the County of Prescott, Ontario, and subsequently at McGill University and the University of Edinburgh. While still a boy of 15 years of age, he joined the Geological Survey of Canada, under Sir William Logan, in the capacity of Junior Assistant, and was rapidly promoted in the service, where lie remained-with but one short interval-for over fifty years, retiring as Chief Geologist and Acting Director in the year 1908. He married Agnes, daughter of the late Alexander Smith, of Westbourne, Glasgow, and Auchentroig, Stirlingshire, and is survived by one son and three daughters. Practically nothing was known of the geology of Canada, and very little with reference to its geography, when Mr. William E. (afterward Sir William) Logan was called upon to undertake the organization of the Geological Survey of Canada, and as its first Director to carry out the mapping of this vast area and the examination of its mineral resources. Dr. Bell's work as a member of Sir William Logan's staff in these early years consisted, therefore, exclusively of geological reconnaisance and geographical exploration. Even in later years, and until his administrative work confined him to his office, Dr. Bell's work remained essentially of this character. The exploratory traverses and track surveys which lie carried out were, chiefly within the area of the great Laurentian protaxis or Canadian Shield, which forms such a striking feature and which has played and will continue to play so important a role in shaping Canadian history and in influencing the character of the Canadian people. Dr. Bell's lines of exploration crossed and re-crossed this area from the Atlantic Coast to the Great Lakes on its western border, and from Lake Huron and Lake Superior on the south to the Arctic Sea, following the water ways of this great land. He also worked along the coast line when acting as geologist and naturalist to the "Neptune" Expedition in 1884, and to the "Alert" Expedition in 1885, both of which carried out explorations in Hudson's Bay and Hudson's Straits; also on the "Diana" Expedition in 1897, when he surveyed the coast of Baffin Land, and was one of the first white men who penetrated to the great 'lakes in the interior of that immense

HenRy Clay FRick, a pioneer in modern coke and steel industry and, in more recent years, one of the outstanding financiers of America, died on Dec. 2, 1919, at his home on Fifth Avenue, New York. Although he had been ill since election day, when he had an attack of indigestion which developed into ptomaine poisoning, his death was a surprise to all. He is survived by his widow, Adelaide Howard Childs Frick; a son, Childs Frick, one unmarried daughter, Helen C. Frick, and four grandchildren. A quiet funeral service was conducted at the Frick home on Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Dr. Leighton Parks, pastor of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. This was attended by members and very intimate friends of the family, Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Officers of the Links Club, and Directors of the United States Steel Corpn. Henry Clay Frick was born Dec. 19, 1849, in West Overland, Westmoreland Co., Pa. His father, John W. Frick, was a farmer of Swiss ancestG, and his mother, Elizabeth Overholt Frick, a member of an old Mennonite family. Until he was sixteen, he spent his time at school, on his father's farm, and in his grandfather's distillery, where he kept books. He attended Otterbein University, in Ohio, for a year. Frick, learning that coke was an essential of the already rapidly developing steel business, early invested every cent he could get in coking-coal lands. With the help of an associate of his grandfather, he formed the corporation of Frick & Co., coke dealers, and acquired fifty-one ovens in the Connellsville region and 300 acres of soft-coal lands. During the panic of '73, with the help of Judge Thomas Mellon, a Pittsburgh 'banker, he bought out his partners and while coke was selling at 90 cents a ton enlarged his purchases of suitable lands. Later, the price of coke increased until it was selling at $5 a ton. Before he was 30 years old, Frick was rated a millionaire. Association with CaRnegie In 1878, he sold an interest in the business Do E. M. Ferguson of New York, and later a share to Mr. Ferguson's brother. Four years later the business was reorganized into the H. C. Frick Coke Co. with vast coal lands, great banks of ovens, and a capitalization of $2,000,000. Then began his association with Andrew Carnegie. He exchanged a part of his coke interest for shares in Carnegie Brothers of Pittsburgh,

Several years ago the writer was connected with the Mint and Assay Service of the Federal Government as Assistant Assayer at the Salt Lake Assay Office. At that time cyanide bars formed approximately half of the bullion purchased by that office. Disagreement in valuat,ion between the producer and the office was not infrequent and to a lesser extent between the Assay Office and the Mint, this latter issue being soon obviated, however, by adopting uniform methods of sampling the bars. A nice problem seemed to offer itself for research and the writer began a series of experiments which were soon terminated, however, by his going into other work, and which he regrets have not since been completed. The results attained may suggest lines of approach to this problem and are, therefore, offered in this article. Frederic P. Dewey, Assayer of the Mint Scrvice, U. 5. Treasury, has had abundant opportunity to study this phase of metallurgy, and has published several articles relative thereto.1 In the last article cited Dewey quotes analyses of cyanide bullion similar in content to that with which the writer worked, and which show some of the variations met with. In the discussion of these papers,2 comparison has been made in terms of copper bullion, but to the writer this seems of questionable value. Copper bullion may resemble silver bullion, but its similarity to gold bullion with little or no silver content is another thing. The freezing-point diagram of Roozeboom, reproduced on page 881 of the discussion cited, is for the gold-silver series as stated. The piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive power and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of from 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an overflow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are not oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it is in this way that the blow-holes are closed in the low-carbon steels. Boiler-Plate and Fire-Box Steel. These grades often contain more or less minute laminations, which are the remains of small blow-holes forming after the setting metal has reached a pasty condition. The blow-holes in the low-carbon steels have not been prevented by usiug deox-idizers, though the ingots are slightly improved so far as the soundness of the steel is concerned. This grade of steel also rises in the molds in setting.

THIS paper deals with only one step in the treatment of ore at the West End mill; not because the other steps are repetitions of practice in other mills, but because in this particular step there is in use the Trent agitator. This device, although it has apparently failed in many mills, is here giving excellent service and has proved to be well adapted for making a thorough replacement of pregnant solution with a minimum amount of barren solution. The strong and weak points of this agitator, its present simple construction, and its use as a thickener for agitator or battery pulp are features of interest; but perhaps the point of greatest interest to the metallurgist in this day of continuous decantation is its use in a series of tanks for slime treatment by the replacement method. Urban development in semi-arid portions of the Southwest has upset a natural balance of geological conditions resulting in broad-scale and local subsidence or heaving ground conditions, Subsidence can be traced to two general causes: irrigation of reclaimed desert lands that have dry, low-density soils; and depression of the water table by ground water withdrawal. Accumulation of weathered volcanic tuff produces areas with swelling characteristics. Soil and subsidence studies made in the Tucson area in Arizona illustrate foundation problems typical of the Southwest that must be considered in the design of building codes. Anticipation of problems and the adoption of corrective measures in the design of engineering structures, establishment of pertinent building codes, and urban planning and zoning to obtain optimum land usage and conservation of natural resources demands a thorough understanding of geological conditions of a developing urban area. In the arid to semi-arid southwestern United States erosional and depositional processes result in special situations that require special precautions in building practices. A series of studies currently underway in the Tucson area, prompted by foundation failures and breaking of buried service lines, serves to illustrate some of these relationships between the geological environment and history and engineering problems. ENVIRONMENT The desert region of the Southwest is characterized by isolated mountain ranges rising abruptly from low valleys or plains — the ranges generally occupy less area than do the intervening valleys. In southern Arizona the valley floors step up from near sea level to 2000 ft or more in elevation, and the ranges may rise to over 7000 ft. Desert and steppe-type climates predominate — climate is controlled more by elevation than it is by latitude. Both climate types are characterized by a lack of precipitation, the former more so than the latter. Practically all the rain that falls in the region evaporates; runoff or recharge generally occurs only during the wettest period. Water table levels are generally being depressed. Vegetation is restricted and consists mainly of creosote bush, cacti and sage brush on the deserts, and mesquite, pinon juniper and various types of grass on the steppes. Precipitation varies from about 3 in. on the warm deserts to about 12 in. on the steppes. Most of this falls in the summer or winter, with only rare storms in other seasons. ABOUT a year ago, I attempted in a general way to trace the origin and development of some of the marketing problems of the petroleum industry, and to describe certain trends which it then seemed possible to foresee. To summarize briefly, it was pointed out that the consumption of gasoline, after increasing for more than a decade at an almost unbelievable rate, was slowing down, but that the two factors which determined the supply of gasoline-namely, the production of crude oil and the percentage of gasoline derived therefrom-were tending steadily to mount. It was suggested that, while the increase in gasoline outlets began with and probably was justified at the start by the rapidly increasing demand, long after all reasonable requirements as to number of outlets had been met the number continued to increase-if anything, at a still more rapid rate-because by that time the overproduction of crude had begun to exert an impelling urge upon the owners of that crude to seek assured outlets for it in the form of gasoline. As more and more companies became integrated all the way from crude oil to marketing, there took place an ever-increasing competition among them, not only for the existing outlets but for new ones. The wide margin between wholesale cost and retail price, which is characteristic of the early stages of most new industries, persisted in the oil industry longer. than in most industries, for various reasons. The existence of that wide margin provided in large measure the means of attracting new outlets, for as the gallonage per outlet declined with the increasing number of outlets, competing companies simply offered the dealers a larger part of the total margin. The very nature of competition suggests that such a process would continue until practically all of the available margin was thus given away, and such was clearly the, tendency. It was a system that in turn produced increasing marketing expense per gallon on account of the -diluted gallonage per outlet; this increased expense might seem to have provided a justification for continuing wide margins. Economics, like its parent, nature, however, progresses by mutations and so began to throw out new types of marketers, in the form cf tank-car service stations, cut-price jobbers, and the like-heretics or

Many of the failures in vocational education are due to the fact that the educational methods were not designed to the capabilities, habits, and environments of those to be trained; rather they were based on the policy that education is education and lessons are lessons, whether for youngsters of fifteen or for men of forty. Vocational education among miners involves, first, a study of the men themselves, their habits, and the use of their leisure time; second, a study of the differences between the methods of teaching required for men and for children. Certain fundamental requirements of training methods for miners are reasonably universal and may be applied with success to any ordinary mining community. The rate of labor turnover is another consideration; it would be useless to design a four-year course for men who remain in one place only a few months. Length of Course The first consideration should be the length of the course. Few mining communities have a sufficiently stable population to make it possible successfully to carry on a course for over a year. While some men might complete a four-year course, the number is comparatively small compared with the number to whom a shorter course would be of service, and it is better to raise the standards of education even a little for a large number than to raise them to a high level for a few. It is perfectly possible to attain both objectives by arranging the courses in small units; all the units, when grouped together, should comprise a fairly complete course, yet any one unit should be complete in itself and of benefit to the workman. It should not take many of these units to make a miner or a timberman out of a mucker; but to do this the course should be short, because muckers seldom stay in one place long. By grouping a number of these units together it Would be possible for a miner to become a shift boss or a shift boss a foreman, and so on. As far as possible the units of the course should not be dependent on those preceding or following. The workman understands the completed job but he is not accustomed to carrying on several jobs at the same time and

This paper deals with only one step in the treatment of ore at the West End mill; not because the other steps are repetitions of practice in other mills, but because in this particular step there is in use the Trent agitator: This device, although it has apparently failed in many mills, is here giving excellent service and has proved to be well adapted for making a thorough replacement of pregnant solution with a minimum amount of barren solution. The strong and weak points of this agitator, its present simple construction, and its use as a thickener for agitator or battery pulp are features of interest; but perhaps the point of greatest interest to the metallurgist in this day of continuous decantation is its use in a series of tanks for slime treatment by the replacement method. Introduction Wet autogenous grinding is utilized in three iron ore concentrating plants operated by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company (CCI). This paper will trace some of the development in converting from the use of metal grinding mill liners to the use of rubber and will update the current performance of rubber liners in these applications. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company is a natural resources firm with major interests in iron ore mining and processing and oil and gas contract drilling. The company also has interests in oil shale, uranium, forest products, and Great Lakes shipping. The three operations discussed in this paper are the Empire and Tilden Mines on the Marquette Iron Range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Sherman Mine in northern Ontario, Canada. The Empire Iron Mining Partnership is managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Inland Steel, McLouth Steel, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, and International Harvester. The Tilden Iron Mining Partnership is also managed by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company and is owned by Algoma Steel Corporation, Ltd., Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, Steel Company of Canada, Wheeling-Pittsburgh, and Sharon Steel Corporation. The Sherman Mine is a joint venture managed by Cliffs of Canada, Ltd. and owned by Dominion Foundries and Steel Company, Ltd. and Tetapaga Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company. The concentrators at all three mines utilize two stage autogenous grinding. Empire and Sherman process magnetic iron ores (Table 1) and utilize magnetic, hydraulic, and flotation concentration methods. Tilden processes an oxidized iron ore (martite, goethite, and hematite) and utilizes a selective-flocculation desliming and flotation concentration flowsheet. Final grind particle sizes are 90% -325M (43k) at Sherman, 90% -500M (25,u ) at Empire and 85% -500M (25 µ) at Tilden. Developmental History The success of using rubber mill linings in Scandinavia led to the first rubber mill lining used by CCI. It was installed in a conventional primary ball mill at Republic Mine in 1964 as reported by Lindroos (1970). This was followed by additional rubber liners for both primary and regrind ball mills. Equipment for treating lead ores was added in 1905 to a copper plant which the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Co. had built in 1902 at Midvale, Utah, about 12 miles to the south of Salt Lake City. By 1906 the lead section of the plant had been rounded out and consisted of a 90-ton gravity concentrator, fifteen hand-rabbled reverbera-tory roasting furnaces, six blast furnaces, a briquetting plant for handling flue dust and fine ores, a regulus furnace for concentrating the low-grade matte made in the blast furnaces, and a baghouse. The copper section was later abandoned and the plant has been operated for many years exclusively as a lead smelter. Some 45 years had elapsed at the time this plant was built since the first attempts to smelt lead ores in the West, and lead smelting had become a large and profitable industry but fundamentally little that was really new had been developed, which could be embodied in a plant built in this period. Principles and tools to work with had remained much the same as those borrowed earlier from European practice. Capacities had been increased and there were mechanical improvements but hand charging was still in vogue and there was little attempt to recover suspended particles carried out with the furnace gases, beyond settling in flues, which usually was only partly effective for recovery of the coarser particles. Satisfactory roasting and preparation of the fine components of the charge were still partially solved problems. The Midvale plant of 1906 may be regarded as more or less typical of the smelting plant of this period for treating complex western lead ores as distinguished from the recovery of lead from the simple lead ores to the eastward. The operation of a concentrating mill directly in conjunction with a lead smelter was, however, not common practice. The ores treated in this plant have from the beginning come from mines owned and operated by the company or have been custom ores purchased in the territory tributary to the plant. The treatment of custom ores is an important service to the small producer who does not have sufficient tonnage to warrant a plant, and serves to increase the tonnage of the operator of large properties, thereby helping to reduce
