The exact nature of the changes that take place in the iron-nickel alloys, giving rise to the interesting and useful expansion alloys in the Invar range, has yet to be fully understood. Similarly, the ternary iron-nickel-cobalt alloys, which also possess such commercially useful expansion characteristics,1,2 are concerned with transformations that appear to be identical with those found in the parent iron-nickel alloys. The investigations on iron-nickel alloys in the range 26 to 29 per cent Ni have been reported by several authors3-9 wherein it is shown that there are factors other than temperature, such as stress and grain size, which play an important part in determining the temperature at which the low-temperature transformation takes place. It will be shown in this paper that the ternary iron-nickcl-cobalt alloys having nickel contents comparable to the alloys mentioned above behave in a parallel manner. The alloys in the range of 26 to 31 per cent Ni and 16 to 21 per cent Co have a coefficient of expansion of about 4.0 X 10-6 per degree Centigrade, and the alloys in this range of composition find considerable application in making glass-to-metal seals, because these expansion properties so well match commercial glasses. The behavior of these alloys is not a simple matter, for it has been observed in alloys of 28.5 per cent Ni and 18.5 Co that severe working ran cause the appearance of a second phase having a needlelike structure similar to the martensite structure in carhon steels. Fig. 1 shows the change brought about in an alloy of this composition when a strip of this material was cut with tin shears. This second phase has been identified as the body-centered cubic alpha phase, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of some of the preliminary investigations in the study of the changes involved in these alloys. KEYNOTE of the mining geology sessions was the preparation for an extensive war with all that this implies as to the need for strategic minerals, both metallic and nonmetallic. Nevertheless the sessions also included many papers of less urgent, more theoretical interest. The stress of wartime production had the effect of giving an unusually full and rich program, the longest in recent years, with sessions continuing virtually throughout the meeting. Some papers dealt with geophysical prospecting as applied to mining geology; others were concerned with the grand strategy of mineral reserves and thus involved the industrial minerals; such "borderline" subjects were presented before sessions held jointly with the Geophysics Committee or the Industrial Minerals Division.

THERE are many methods for determining the meridian, but all of those in common use involve at least two separate observations, one for latitude and one for azimuth. Such observations made upon a south star at any hour are open to the objection of possible inaccuracy due to ignorance of the absolute refraction, and also to slow change in the altitude of the star when near the meridian. The method of observing a circumpolar star at elongation, besides requiring a separate observation for latitude, is open to the serious objection that clouds may obscure the star at the critical moment. Moreover, a tedious wait for the star to come to elongation is sometimes necessary. Many of us can recall long, cold, weary vigils, waiting for Polaris to reach elongation. For observing a circumpolar star at any hour, not only the latitude, but also the true time, must be known. This it is practically impossible to obtain, except in regions reached by the telegraph, and usually then one has to know the longitude also, in order to reduce "standard time" to "local time." The results obtained by this method, when the star is at culmination, are not very good, unless the true local time is absolutely known. The methods of obtaining the meridian from the sun, by means of a solar attachment, or by direct observation, while good, are not absolute, by reason of refraction, change in declination of the sun, and small change in vertical angle, when the sun is near the meridian. For these two methods, latitude, time, and approximate longitude have to be known. In the method here described, only one observation is needed, and from it azimuth, latitude, and sidereal time are computed. In other words, one can observe a circumpolar star-Polaris

THE art of melting nonferrous metals, in smelting, casting, and in compounding of alloys, is highly dependent on a knowledge of the temperature of the metal. This knowledge may reside in the experience and judgment of the melter, or it may be based on measurement by suitable instruments. It-is our purpose to discuss briefly the instruments available for such measurements, and more at length the present, practice in molten metals, without recommendation. In the limits of time and space allotted, we can do little more than mention the available methods of measurement that are directly applicable in this field. In the 1939 edition of the Metals Handbook, issued by the American Society for Metals, pages 285-310, there is a more extensive discussion of pyrometry than can be attempted here, which should be referred to for details we must omit. For reasons that will appear, thermoelectric pyrometry will constitute the major portion of our discussion of the subject, only limited attention being given to radiation or optical pyrometry. METHODS OF MEASUREMENT THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY A thermocouple consists of two dissimilar wires, or a wire inside a tube of a dissimilar material, joined together at one end, which is placed in the region or medium where the temperature is to be measured, while the other ends are connected through suitable lead wires to a voltage-measuring device, which may be a millivoltmeter or a potentiometer. An electromotive force is generated in the circuit, which is proportional to the difference in temperature between the hot junction and the junctions of the lead wires to the measuring instrument. If this latter temperature is maintained constant, the e.m.f. measured varies only with the temperature of the hot junction. Every thermoelectric pyrometer is calibrated for a particular cold-junction temperature such as 0°F., 32°F. or 75°F., but usually it is more practical to compensate instrumentally over the probable range of cold-junction temperatures than to maintain the junction at the particular temperature for which the instrument was calibrated. Thermocouple Materials Only a very few pairs of metals are in frequent use for pyrometric measurements. The most generally used are iron-constantan for temperatures up to 1500°F. in oxidizing and up to 1800°F. in reducing atmospheres and chromel-alumel, which may be used in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to 2400°F. for intermittent service. The accuracy of the latter deteriorates rapidly at temperatures above 2200°F. THE following data were obtained during Tan exhaustive research into the possibilities of concentrating United Verde massive sulfide copper-zinc-iron ores by flotation. The composition of these ores approximates the following mineralogical analysis: 3 to 15 per cent chalcopyrite; 3 to 11 per cent marmatite (ferruginous sphalerite) ; 47 to 69 per cent pyrite; and 10 per cent quartz. Andrew Carnegie, America's best-known ironmaster and philanthropist, died at his home at Lenox, Mass., Monday, Aug. 11, after a three days' illness. A pioneer in the steel industry, he introduced into this .country the Bessemer process And formed the plans that have resulted in this country's supremacy in the steel markets of the world. Known throughout the world for his, gifts, he is also known to engineers as the donor of the home of their National Societies and as the founder of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, of Pittsburgh. For many years, also, he was an honorary member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and of the Engineers Club of New York. What he considered the secret, of his success is shown by the epitaph he wrote for himself, "Here lies a man who knew how to enlist in his service better men than himself." He was buried Thursday, Aug. 14, in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarry-town, N. Y., the funeral services being private, in accordance with his wish.

the leaching of near-by rocks, had had no other result than to bring out from obscurity three certain features of practical lmport, all the labor of that controversy would have been well expended. These three points are : (1) a clear distinction between the vadose and the profound zones; (2) a determination of the manner in which the latter may be invaded by conditions of the former; and (3) an establishment of the general truth of the lateral-secretion theory when vadose conditions prevail, and of the. ascension-theory under profound conditions. In the practical consideration. of ore-deposits these generalizations are fundamental. Their wider application must be productive of great industrial advantages. Of first importance in the broader scientific survey of ore-genesis is the recognition of a sharp distinction between vadose and profound conditions. To many who listened to Professor Posepny's remarkable paper, read at the Chicago session of the Institute during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, this seemed, as Dr. S. F. Emmons has already observed, its most valuable and suggestive feature. Notwithstanding Posepny's implications to the contrary, and his vigorous berating of Sandberger's views, the immediate and lasting .effect of the . argument was really to strengthen greatly Sandberger's position. For it completely and sharply separated the lateral-secretionists from the ascensionists, raising the sphere of the former bodily above the line of permanent water-level and at the same time confining .the sphere of the latter to regions below that horizon. A little later, Professor Van Rise showed in some detail how meteoric waters may deeply invade the profound zone and carry vadose conditions into it. The zonal limitations of two great and apparently opposed agencies being thus definitely fixed, it is found that neither of the theories based thereon is susceptible of general application. If the generalizations of the lateral-secretionist be propounded solely for vadose conditions, we are able to agree with all of his more-important contentions; while there is general acquiescence in the views of the ascensionist if their application be restricted to the profound zone. SINCE oil journals commenced to feature the progress of Iraq pipe-line developments and since newspapers undertook to follow the discussions between a certain large oil company and an Asiatic nation, I have repeatedly been asked questions that are only answerable by setting forth the essential geographic and historical facts of concessions in that part of the world. In so doing effort will be made to correct erroneous statements made in various quarters: and mistakes herein are being kept as low in number as possible. Perhaps the best-known concession in the Middle East is the one of the Iraq Petroleum Co., covering the greater part of the portion of the kingdom of that name- lying east of the Tigris River. West of the stream is the concession of the British Oil Development Co., which takes in all presumed petroliferous areas in western Iraq. No other important oil concessions exist in that country, except for the lands of the Khanikin Oil Co., which operates in "Transferred Territories" on the border of Persia. East of and continuous with the Iraq fields are those of Persia where the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. holds the well-known D'Arcy concession comprising three-quarters of the country, omitting the five northern provinces. This is the only valid existing concession in Persia, so far as known, except certain old firmans that permit development at Semnan in central Persia and possibly also certain regional grants to a French banking syndicate in eastern Mazanderan Province.

IN THE changed circumstances which now confront the world, an international open-door policy is the only way to keep pace with the world's demand for oil. You may rest assured that as far as the British Empire is concerned, American capital for the develop-ment of oil resources is welcome, and little obstruction will be found in the way to permit the use of foreign capital in the group of countries which constitute the British Empire. In the war days we worked in close cooperation and harmony, but in disbandment of the Petroleum War Service Committee, when the war ended, I feel that it left its task unfinished. In the wake of war there appeared a ghost of war-time conditions in the form of belief that Great Britain was straining to corner the petroleum resources of the world. I am certain that if the war-service committee had continued its work in the period of reconstruction the real story would be known and this sinister ghost would have long since vanished before the truth.
