This paper aims to assess the current and future role of coal in energy strategy of Turkey and evaluates the compatibility of the policies to the EU energy policy and strategy. The Turkish government set targets to utilize more coal reserves of the country in next decades. However, the country is also in the process of becoming an EU Member State, hence, it is expected that the energy policies have to comply with the EU. Moreover, Turkey ratified Kyoto Protocol, thus the country should limit greenhouse gas emissions. Clean Coal, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies are expected to become an important instrument for the mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. An alternative technique to the conventional CCS methods is CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation. Turkey has significant resources of magnesium silicate minerals (olivine, serpentine) deposits which can be utilised in CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation method.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses the design of the subsurface nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada; and possible concepts for construction of the subsurface facility. Subsurface construction at Yucca Mountain is planned to last for 20 or more years, and may be accomplished using tunnel boring machines (TBM), drill and blast methods, raise bore machines, and roadheaders. The design of the subsurface facility includes approximately 107 km (66 miles) of tunnels and drifts. The vast majority of the repository will be excavated with TBMs. Design and construction concepts for the subsurface repository discussed in this paper are based on the License Application that was submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on June 3, 2008. The License Application was subsequently docketed by the NRC in September 2008. When a Construction Authorization is received from the NRC, notices to proceed with subsurface construction at Yucca Mountain will be issued by DOE. The Yucca Mountain site is located in the Mojave Desert approximately 150 km (90 miles) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The site is on federal land in southern Nevada and is shown in Figure 1. Yucca Mountain is a ridge of volcanic rocks com-posed primarily of solidified volcanic ash. Previous underground construction work at Yucca Mountain included excavation of two tunnels using two different TBMs. The first tunnel, the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), is a 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter tunnel that is 7,877 m (25,843 ft) long and was described by Morris and Hansmire at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) in 1995. The second tunnel, known as the Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block (ECRB), was a TBM drive of 5.0 m (16 ft, 5 in.) in diameter and 2,681 m (8,796 ft) long. The second tunnel was excavated in 1998 and was described by Fulcher, Eastlund and Copeland at RETC 1999 and is named the East?West Cross Drift in that paper. (These previously excavated tunnels are shown in Figure 2.) In the volcanic rock formation where the vast majority of the planned repository will be con-structed, previous tunneling conditions were generally very good.

The geology of the roof of the Pittsburgh coal bed was studied and mapped in nine contiguous counties containing the bulk of the remaining reserves of this coal bed in the northern Appalachian Coal Basin. Drill core records from Belmont and Monroe counties, Ohio, Washington and Greene counties Pennsylvania, and Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel, Monongalia, and Marion counties, West Virginia provided the data for twelve computer generated regional geologic variable maps. Four of these geologic variables (overburden thickness, vertical distance to the rider coal, lithology at the five foot horizon above the roof of the mineable Pittsburgh seam, and the number of lithologic changes within the 30 foot interval above the roof of the mineable Pittsburgh seam) were used to estimate the risk of potential roof falls by a methological scheme developed during this study. A hazard zone risk map was developed showing a generalized regional trend of increasing risk from west to east across the basin. Mapping of individual geologic variables and mapping of hazard risk can be done at any scale. The accuracy of the mapping is primarily dependent on the density of the drill core records. Geologic feature maps and the hazard risk map contained in this report are reduced (1 :500,000 scale) versions of the larger scale (1 :62,500) maps prepared for the Bureau of Mines as map folios.

Many accidents rightly classifiable as electrically caused are not so classified for the reason that in numerous accidents the part that electricity played in causing the fatality is only suspected. For instance, a workman might receive a shock that would cause him to lose his balance and fall beneath a trip of cars; if no one saw the first part of the accident, the cause undoubtedly would be charged to "haulage." This paper covers a brief study of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents. The first usually result from direct contact with the electrical circuit or electrical apparatus; the second more often are the result of arcing or flashing due to handling defective apparatus or making repairs on "live" equipment or circuits. It is hoped that helpful suggestions may be offered for minimizing accidents of these two classes.

This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013. The Two Rivers Project is a feasibility study to evaluate the UG2 chromitite layer on Dwarsrivier372KT, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The project, which commenced in August 2001, is expected to receive go-ahead early in 2003. The project sponsors (AVMIN 55%, Implats 45%)required project delivery within a short timeframe requiring optimization of the geological and geostatistical programme. Geological modelling was carried out in parallel to the drilling programme, and significant up-front geostatistical preparatory work was done. The time saving was approximately 4 – 6 months on project delivery. The cost saving to the project (excluding NPV considerations) is estimated at R20–30 million. One of the most notable achievements of the iron and steel industry in the United States in this century has been the general increase in productivity of individual blast furnaces and the reduction in coke rate. Most of the improvement in furnace operations has occurred within the past decade. During this time the output of the average furnace increased about one-third, while fuel rates decreased from 15 to 20 percent. For example, in 1949, the iron and steel industry produced 811.2 short tons of pig iron per blast-furnace day with a coke rate of 1,870.4 pounds per ton of pig iron, By 1960, the average production of pig iron per blast-furnace day had risen to 1,182.4 tons, while the coke rate had decreased to 1,497 pounds per ton of pig iron. These figures are averages for the entire industry; many furnaces produced over 2,000 tons per day and one furnace, operating on pellets, reached 2,700 tons of pig iron per day, Coke rates of individual furnaces varied, but some furnaces operated on less than 1,200 pounds per ton of pig iron. The significance of this decrease in coke rate is shown clearly when data on pig-iron production and coke consumption in 1959 are compared with 1948. In 1948, 57.3 million short tons of coke was charged into blast furnaces to produce 60.1 million tons of pig iron; in 1959 only 47.6 million tons of coke was needed to produce 60.2 million tons of pig iron. Thus, in 1959, nearly 10 million tons less coke was required to produce about the same amount of pig iron as was produced in 1948.

In recent investigations of the microstructure and crystallographic features of martensite by electgon microscopy,', '9 thin films (about 50 to l000A in thickness) have been used as specimens. It was found by W. Pitschl ,2 that the lattice relationships between the supefiaturated fcc matrix and the martensite formed in thin films were different from those observed after transformation in bulk material. Corresponding differences are to be expected in nucleation and in reaction kinetics in the formation of martensite in thin films, but have not yet been reported. In the course of the preparation of thin films of iron-base alloys for investigation by electron microscopy it was observed that films of alloys, whose martensite formation temperature (Ms) was below room temperature, formed martensite during the electrochemical thinning process conducted at or above room temperature. The chemical compositions and approximate bulkM,-temperatures of the three materials on which this observation was made are listed in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-melted from high-purity metals. It can be seen that the effect occurred in alloys that contain only sub-stitutional components as well as in alloys that contain carbon as an interstitial solute. The appearance of martensite formed in this manner is illustrated in Fig. 1, which represents a polished film of alloy No. 1 at XI0 magnification. The martensite plates can be recognized by their surface relief effects. In addition, heavily strained (owrinkledo) austenite can be seen near the edges of the film where it is thinnest and transformation stresses or strains can be accommodated by plastic deformation most easily. The paper presents an approach to design a multi level room and pillar layout in a 40m thick seam overlain by a major aquifer. The design was required to maximise extraction with due consideration of the general stability of the workings, the potential water hazards, and spontaneous combustion risks due to air leakage between horizons. The approach utilised was a combination of empirical pillar sizing for water hazard control with numerical modelling to assess potential interactions between horizons. The numerical modelling allowed the size of interleaves, and the appropriate staggers to be optimised in terms of stress distribution. The stress distribution allows both the general stability of the openings and more importantly the permeability changes around the openings to be determined. The permeability of coal is sensitive to stress, and an empirical stress to permeability relationship, and theoretical permeability to flow leakage relationship has been applied to interpreting the relative spontaneous combustion risk associated with each of the proposed layouts. The final proposed design is a compromise between maximum exploitation of reserves and consideration of water hazards and of spontaneous combustion risk. Further more detailed design will be required as more comprehensive data on the geotechnical properties of the coal and overburden become available.

The Nokomai valley is located within the pumpellyite/actinolite facies of the Otago Schist, a regional scale metamorphic belt in Southern New Zealand. The Otago Schist is dominated by psammitic and pelitic greyschist with more subordinate greenschist, quartzite, marble, and ultramafics. Mining in the Nokomai, began in the 1860s, with sluicing of terrace gravels in the lower valley. Good gold is reported to have been won from unconformities within very weathered gravels lower in the terrace sequences, and particularly from within channels which dissect these older deposits. Gold was recovered from these terraces in the main Nokomai Valley, and two major tributaries (Victoria Gully and Bullock Head Creek). In the period 1885 - 1887 further gold was discovered in basal gravels beneath the Nokomai flats when the Hunter brothers sank two shafts and excavated a connecting drive to discover a lead 1.2 - 1.5 m thick. The Golden Lion Sluicing Company began mining in 1896 using an hydraulic elevator on the very 'tight' 1.8 - 2.4 m of basal gravels. This operation was followed by the Nokomai Gold Sluicing Company whose average return grade was >485 mglm3 until mining ceased in 1943 (Wopereis; 1988, 1989). A quartz vein, Commissioners Reef, was worked for small production at some time during the 1920 - 1930 period, until fault termination of the vein ceased production.

To provide a means for accurately and reliably warning of impending roof falls or rock bursts and for evaluating support systems. The Approach: Development of a device for measuring rockbolt loads which is not affected by harsh environments nor by eccentric loading conditions and is easily adapted to various size rock bolts. How It Works: The Rock-Bolt Tension Load Cell, developed by the Bureau's Spokane (Wash.) Mining Research Center, is installed on a bolt and sandwiched between a conventional doughnut washer bearing plate and a torqueing nut (Fig. 1). As the bolt takes load, the bearing plate transmits the load axially to the cell through a ball and socket arrangement, compensating for uneven bearing surfaces. The cell body strains in proportion to the applied load: the strain is sensed by welded strain gages as change in electrical resistance. The resistance change is read through a Wheatstone Bridge and, through calibration, the applied load is determined.

This paper reviews advances in the art of borehole (slurry) mining made by the Bureau of Mines from 1974 to 1980. The design of a proto-type borehole-mining tool (BMT) developed by the Bureau of Mines is pre-sented along with production data, reclamation data, and an application of the BMT to the mining of coal, uraniferous sandstone, oil sands, and phosphate ore. The BMT was first used near Wilkeson, WA, where steeply pitching metallurgical coal was mined at 8 st/h from a depth of 25 to 75 ft. Next, 940 st of uraniferous sandstone was mined at 8 st/h from a depth of 75 to 100 ft in Natrona County, WY. One thousand short tons of oil sands was mined in Kern County, CA, at the rate of 14 st/h from a depth of 110 to 150 ft in 1979. Most recently, 1,700 st of phosphate ore was produced at 25 st/h from deep (230-to 250-ft) deposits in St. Johns County, FL. Progressive improvements were made in the borehole mining technique. These include the use of the hydrostatic head of a water-filled borehole for roof support, and the development of methods to survey and backfill mined-out cavities.

The paper gives an outline of the design, installation and performance of a series of mooring and berthing dolphins for a major ferry berth outside the port of Elsinore, Denmark. The Dolphins are large cylindrical bottle shaped and open ended steel piles vibrated into the sandy seabed. They are subsequently equipped with prefabricated fender units. Vehicle access to the ferry is via a fixed ramp and a semi-submerged linkspan. Supplementary passenger access is via a covered gangway steel bridge from an existing gangway facility to a midship door in the ferry«

In response to this demand, in years past Information Circulars were published containing a list of laboratories. This paper is a revised version of Information Circular 7523, The listing has been changed from a regional basis to one of States arranged alphabetically and grouped by cities, again alphabetically, with Alaska and Canada listed at the end. All the services given at these laboratories are listed on one page for convenience and brevity. This list is compiled as a public service, and none of the laboratories listed herein are recommended over any other nor can the Bureau of Mines vouch for their results.

This investigation was conducted to identify the principle causes of spoil instability problems in the Eastern Coal Province. The study was also conducted to develop a matrix to predict the strength and groundwater parameters necessary to conduct stability analyses on a proposed reclamation scheme. Suggestive methods to reduce spoil instability potential are also included. Numerous physical property, strength, compressibility, chemical and mineralogical tests were conducted on mine spoil samples obtained from 11 different surface mine sites. Site characteristics that influence the position of the post reclamation groundwater table were identified. Distinct regions within the Eastern Coal Province with high incidences of surface mine slides or high landslide susceptibility were identified. The application of the predictive matrices developed in this study is for surface mine sites mined and reclaimed in general accordance with the Surface Mine Reclamation Control Act of 1977. A review of current mining practices and the relative effect on spoil stability is included.

The Construction Aggregates Corp. operates a plant for processing sand and gravel from two deposits in Ottawa County, Mich. The bulk of the sand is obtained from a sand dune on the shore of Lake Michigan, and the gravel is dug from a glacial-drift deposit farther inland. Mining is done with draglines, and the material, both at the digging site and in the plant, is moved mainly by systems of conveyors. The Ferrysburg plant serves customers along the Great Lakes, which is unusual for a business normally local in character. Annual production exceeds 1-1/2 million tons of sand and gravel as concrete aggregate and 200,000 tons of core sand for foundry use.

An analysis of coal slurry pipelines was presented in our May 1976 study, Route Specific Cost Comparisons: Unit Trains, Coal Slurry Pipelines and Extra High Voltage Transmission (4]. The present study extends that analysis. The earlier work included technical and economic cost descriptions of the black Mesa and ETSI pipelines as well as some hypothetical pipeline routes. Water problems, safety and environment, required resources, and labor impacts were discussed at some length. Additionally, pipeline impacts on competing railroads, slurry-rail comparisons, and cost escalation. were analyzed. The difference in pipeline profitability to an owner-operator versus a promoter-builder was suggested. These aspects are not redone in this study. Here, we present a synopsis of the previous results and a general statement of coal slurry pipelines. Extensions of the arguments are presented where they appear warranted. New material is developed in the area of pipeline branching and tapping. This would appear necessary if slurry pipelines are to function as more than private lines; if they are, for example, to be responsive to common carrier requirements.

The Palaeo-Proterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the largest known resources of high-grade hematite ore on the Southern African continent. These ores are currently being exploited at Sishen and Beeshoek. Hematite occurances on the Sishen South exploration project (some 65 km south of Sishen mine), are at present the focus of an intensive investigation. At both the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, mineralisation is found within lithologies belonging to the Transvaal and Oliphantshoek Supergroups. The Transvaal Supergroup comprises a basal, carbonate platform sequence (the Campbell Rand Subgroup) overlain by thick units of banded iron-formation belonging to the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The Asbestos Hills Subgroup is unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Gamagara Subgroup. The latter Subgroup has been correlated with the lowermost unit of the Oliphantshoek Supergroup. The Sishen and Sishen South deposits are located close to the western margin of the Kaapvaal craton and have been subjected to intensive, structural deformation. Both localities have undergone folding, faulting and thrusting. Early regional tectonism (2400 - 1700 Ma) played a critical role in the genesis and preservation of the ores from younger erosive events. At both deposits, four similar iron ore occurrences have been recognised. The ores have developed in specific depositional environments and hence display unique physical, chemical and metallurgical properties:The bulk of the high-grade hematite comprises laminated and massive ores, which are found in the upper parts of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The laminated and massive ores are best developed in basinal and pseudo-graben structures. Collapse breccia ores of medium- and lower-grade are preserved within deep palaeosinkholes. The sinkholes have developed within the dolomites of the Campbellrand Subgroup. Lower-grade conglomeratic and gritty ores constitute the remainder of the deposits. These ores are found in the overlying clastic succession of conglomerates, shales and quartzites belonging to the Gamagara Subgroup. Although, there are many stratigraphic and lithological similarities between the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, there are also important differences, which will impact on the profitable exploitation of the ores. The most striking contrast between the deposits is their size and geometry. Sishen mine is a single pit operation with an opencast mineable reserve of 895 Mt. The Sishen orebody is thicker, more continous and significantly larger than the Sishen South deposit. The Sishen South deposit has a potential opencast reserve of 228 Mt. It comprises a number of small and narrow, isolated orebodies, spread over an area of ¦64 km2 . There is a significant difference in grade between the deposits. On average the orebodies of the Sishen South deposit have a higher iron content (+0.25 per cent Fe), less potassium (- 0.090 per cent K2O) and less phosphorus (-0.019 per cent P). The Sishen South deposit has less interbedded shale in the laminated and massive ores. The footwall of these high-grade ores is a light-density, intrusive sill, compared to banded iron-formation at Sishen. With a proposed heavy-medium separation plant at Sishen South, the impact of dilution on product grades is expected to be less than that currently experienced at Sishen.

For a large scale open pit mining and concentrating operation, on a low-grade disseminated ore body, it is possible to set an approximate lower bound on economically feasible operating scales and an approximate upper bound on economically desirable scales in a relatively straight forward manner. The optimum scale ofplanned operations, with respect to the objective ofmaximisation ofthe net value ofthe orebody, will have to be arrived at by iterative planning runs, but it may be expected to lie close to this upper bound. The effects of infrastructural costs and of the addition of a risk premium to the cost of capital, to form the discount rate for planning purposes, are considered theoretically and by worked example. It is concluded that a perceived special, unsystematic, risk should not be accounted for by the use of such a risk premium as this is inducive to placing a greater amount of investment capital at risk, for no greater return-rate to investment.
