The Hauraki goldfield is located east of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It includes Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges as far south as the town of Te Aroha and south east to Te Puke. It has a total north-south extent of about 180 km and an area of 3000 km2. The goldfield is the most productive in New Zealand, and while production at present is negligible, the area has undergone continuous exploration over the last seven years.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonites to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath, 1986 and personal communication). These bentonites typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X¬ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. Mineral economics interfaces the mineral sciences and engineering with finance and economics in the analysis of appropriate questions facing the minerals and energy industries. Its practitioners include those trained in the earth sciences; mining, petroleum, and geological engineering; metallurgy and mineral preparation; as well as finance, information systems, economics, and statistics-most usefully in one or more combinations. Allowing for some overlap, three general areas may be identified: evaluation, economic analysis, and resource appraisal. Evaluation begins with mine investment analysis (exemplified by Gentry and O'Neil, 1984) and process costing, for which the STRAMM Handbook (Anon., 1977) provides a well-known basis for mining and beneficiation. But it extends from property appraisal, often used for the determination of taxes and royalties, through the determination and comparison of transport costs (e.g., Richer and Soo, 1977), and to benefit/cost analyses of externalities. Economic analysis, the subject of this section, is displayed in rigor and extent both theoretically and as applied to commodity classes in Vogely (1985), but it is implicit though apparent throughout Lefond (1983). The text edited by Vogely places minerals in their aggregative context with economic growth and trade, proceeds to the theoretical analysis of minerals and their markets, analyzes the structure and performance of the major mineral sectors, and concludes with policy issues: fuel, nonfuel, and environmental. Resource appraisal employs quantitative methods for the estimation of mineral and energy resources. It moves through geologic, geophysical, and geochemical properties to the identification of estimation procedures for mineral endowment and for the economic measure of stocks and flows of specific minerals (Harris, 1984). The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate support interaction between conventional bolts and the rib at two Western coal mines. The principal goal was to develop guidelines for designing rib support under various conditions. At mine A, seven rib bolts were installed with load cells and monitored over a 4-month period. Fifty-seven pull tests were conducted with two types of anchors at various depths. At mine B, 163 pull tests were conducted. Results showed that during the 4 months of monitoring bolt load, tension in the bolts decreased over time in some situations and that anchorage capacity was reduced in a yielded zone. Load-versus-deformation plots from pull tests in the rib showed fundamental differences in anchorage behavior at the two mines, particularly when comparing results of tests in old pillars at mine A and tests in new ribs at mine B. Numerical modeling experiments indicate that coal bonding strength was the most significant factor in determining postyield anchorage capacity. Correlation of anchor yield point with anchor depth were more pronounced at mine A than at mine B; measuring torque may be a reasonable method of monitoring deteriorating anchorage capacity in a rib undergoing fracturing and yield.

"The unconformity beneath 75 per cent or over 6000 km2 of the Athabasca Basin in Alberta lies within economically exploitable depths. The basement beneath this unconformity consists of an extension of the Wylie Lake Pluton, locally faulted and containing areas of mylonitic rocks. While the rocks of the Wylie Lake Pluton are not promising host rocks for uranium ore deposits, the areas of mylonites, graphitic rocks and possible remnants of granitegneiss would bear closer examination. One area of maficmylonites shows a weathering zone enriched in Si, Ca, Na, Pb, Ni, Ba, Co, Sr, Zn and U in addition to reported values of 0.08 oz/ton gold. This zone occurs beneath 800 m to 900 m of Athabasca Group sediments, but similar rock types are present beneath much thinner cover elsewhere. Detailed geophysical exploration is required over the area of thinner Athabasca Group rocks to define more precisely the areas of promising basement rock type.IntroductionThe Athabasca Basin in Alberta has considerable economic potential which has not yet been realized. The geological setting is closely analogous to parts of the basin in Saskatchewan which host major uranium deposits. Recent advances in geophysical techniques have led to deposits being located in Saskatchewan below 600 m of cover. This means that the unconformity between the Athabasca Group and the basement lies at exploitable depths over 6000 km2 or 75 per cent of the Alberta portion of the basin. Much of this area was only cursorily examined almost a decade ago. In addition, Alberta's new Metallic Mineral Regulations have clarified the regulatory situation in the area, and opened up much land for exploration. This article is based on Wilson's (1985a) study of the Athabasca Group and Wilson's (1986) work on the basement and alteration beneath the Athabasca Group in Alberta."

Résumé Six modèles métriques de remblai cimenté en pâte (RCP) ont été suivis durant 120 jours par l?utilisation de deux méthodes géophysiques non-destructives : la résistivité et la micro-sismique. Les RCP étaient constitués de trois résidus miniers et de deux proportions de ciment (3% et 6% en poids). En parallèle, des cylindres de RCP étaient utilisés pour évaluer périodiquement l?UCS. La résistivité augmentait quasi-linéairement de 28 à 120 jours pour tous les RCP investigués. Des variations de résistivité selon le type de résidu et le pourcentage de ciment ont été observées. Une équation empirique a été dégagée entre l?UCS, la résistivité, le temps, la densité relative et le rapport eau/ciment (E/C). La mesure de la vitesse des ondes de cisaillement a permis de dégager une équation mathématique de type exponentielle qui relie la résistance mécanique sans correction préalable par les paramètres de la recette de RCP. La réalisation de ce projet avait pour but de dégager la meilleure approche non-destructive afin d?estimer la résistance mécanique des remblais en chantier minier. Sur la base des résultats obtenus, les deux méthodes utilisées ont donné des résultats probants afin d?estimer la résistance mécanique et les deux méthodes sont donc à même d?être utilisées en chantier souterrain. Abstract Six scale models of cemented paste backfill (CPB) were followed during a 120 days period using two nondestructive geophysical methods: resistivity and micro-seismic. CPB were made up of three mine tailings and two cement proportion (3% and 6% by weight). In parallel, CPB cylinders were used to periodically evaluate uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Resistivity was increasing nearly in straight line from day 28 to day 120 for all CPB models. According to the tailing type and cement percentage, resistivity variations were observed. An empirical equation emerged from UCS, resistivity, time, specific gravity of tailings and, water/cement ratio. The use of shearwave velocity allowed to identify a mathematical exponential equation related to mechanical strength without prior correction of the CPB?s formula parameters. The purpose of this project was to identify the best non-destructive approach in order to evaluate the mechanical strength of backfill in a mine site. On the basis of those results, both methods gave conclusive results in order to estimate mechanical strength and both methods can be used in underground operations.

Mineral deposits of the central New Guinea region (Gunung Bijih, Ok Tedi, Mount Kare, Porgera, Frieda River) and of southeastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, Wafi, Hamata, Hidden Valley, Tolukuma, Misima) are associated with hot, forceful intrusions of magma of mantle origin that penetrated thick Precambrian and Palaeozoic continental crust. The interaction of high- temperature melt with continental crust, and the differentiation of melt while in transit through thick crust, may be factors in generating ore. Mineralised intrusives in central New Guinea are a result of Neogene- Quaternary magmatism and were emplaced in a foreland thrust belt environment, a setting similar to the (mineralised) Laramide intrusions of southwestern USA. In both cases, central New Guinea and the Laramide, magmatism is not obviously subduction- related. Mineralised intrusives in south- eastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, etc.), also, are in a thrust belt setting, and are not obviously subduction-related. The association of. gold in southeastern New Guinea with a second (Pliocene) phase of igneous activity, rather than with earlier (Miocene) activity suggests that re-working by successive intrusions may be a factor in localising ore. This is seen, also, in the Bismarck-Solomon islands region where the richer deposits are associated with later (Pliocene) intrusives rather than with earlier (Eocene-Oligocene) intrusives. Unlike the mainland mineral deposits, those of the Bismarck-Solomon islands are clearly subduction-related.

Following the discovery by CRA of gold at Mt Kare, and the subsequent 1988-90 gold rush, mechanised mining of the alluvial resource is now being carried by a company jointly owned by CRA (51%) and landowners of the area (49%). Mining is currently being carried out using small gravity processing plants fed by hydraulic excavators. Use of hydraulic mining techniques will be limited to over- coming difficulties related to the high clay content of the material and the soft nature of the bedrock. Current resource estimates suggest that the alluvials will have a mining life of three to four years. During this time, exploration of the hydrothermal gold mineralisation at Mt Kare will be carried out by a wholly-owned company of CRA. It is hoped that this will lead to establishment of an economic primary gold resource.

For many years the scrubbing of roaster gas carrying sulphur dioxide has been carried out at the plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. at Risdon, Tasmania, using long horizontal tubes. in which the gas stream crossed a shower of water. In order to provide for increased roaster capacity, it was evident that additional gas scrubbing capacity would be required to prevent pollution of the atmosphere.This provided an opportunity to review the whole operation of gas scrubbing and an investigation was initiated to determine the characteristics of a counter-current type of scrubber. It was hoped that a change to this type of scrubbing would also reduce the sulphur dioxide concentration of the gas delivered to the atmosphere to a negligible amount. This, paper outlines results obtained from an experimental tower which was operated under a wide range of conditions, the packing height, gas flow, water flow, water temperature, and concentration of S02 in inlet gas being varied independently. A description is given of the leading features and operating characteristics of the plant units, which are designed on the basis of the experimental results. Operation of the new scrubbing system commenced on October 5th, 1948.THE PROBLEMThe gas which is handled carries S02 which may vary in concentration from 2% to 5%, and reaches the scrubbing system at a temperature of approximately 180 deg. C. An appreciable amount of suspended material accompanies the gas which has passed the cyclone system.

"An approach to the in situ testing of mine backfills is outlined. It has been developed to provide a measure of the effective strength and stiffness of such materials after placement in stopes. This paper is based upon recent field studies undertaken at five Quebec mines. Details of the selected instrumentation, supporting equipment and testing procedures are reviewed. The mechanical behaviour of the backfills is reported and related to their physical properties. This approach represents an economical, simple and reliable means to assess the mechanical characteristics of backfill materials as an aid to both mine design and placement quality control. IntroductionDevelopments in backfill and mining method technology are creating a pressing need to develop effective techniques for characterizing the physical and mechanical properties of backfill in situ, rather than relying on traditional laboratory testing. The development of bulk mining methods is creating the requirement to more fully understand the nature of exposed fill faces to design for stability in pillar recovery operations. Other backfill technological developments currently receiving widespread attention are high density placement and the use of alternative additives to Portland cement. In Canada, U.S.A. and South Africa attention is also being placed on employing backfill to alleviate rockburst hazards(1,2.3l. In situ testing offers the potential to measure the geomechanical properties of backfill once placed in stopes , in order to assess its actual role in pillar recovery and ground support. Similarly, it offers the ability to provide some quality control during backfill placement. This role is seen as becoming increasingly important with the growing recognition of the need to pay greater attention to the mode of placement, which governs segregation and variation in the properties actually achieved by the backfill after placement."

"This paper evaluates the effect of grind size on the flotation performance of a platinum ore from the UG2 reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex, in South Africa. The study was conducted on the Mintek Flotation Pilot Plant Facility, located in Johannesburg, and represented a thorough evaluation of the application of the flotation modelling methodology developed jointly by the University of Cape Town and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre at the University of Queensland through the AMIRA P9 Project. A simulation model of the pilot plant data was successfully implemented, providing a set of circuit modelling parameters that appeared to be both consistent and well correlated to measurable characteristics of the ore and the pilot circuit operating conditions. The findings indicate that the methodology that was used could well provide a useful framework for developing optimisation criteria for industrial flotation circuits in combination with appropriate feed grind size and regrind size targets.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognised that the size distribution of an ore is one of the most important factors in the determination of the performance of a flotation process. It therefore follows that the optimisation of a flotation plant cannot be considered without due recognition of the interdependence of this process with the process of comminution. There are numerous qualitative guidelines for the selection of an optimum grind target for a particular operation. Mineralogical analysis can readily provide information on liberation as a function of grind, and the desirable particle size range for optimum mineral flotation is well established in both theory and practice (see for example Trahar, 198 1). For some operations, meeting these two criteria simultaneously is relatively simple. For the majority of operations, such mineralogically “easy” deposits, if they ever existed, have long been exhausted, and the optimum grind represents a highly complex compromise between liberation and overgrinding of both desirable minerals and gangue. This is particularly true for circuits that include regrind stages, where both primary and secondary (and sometime even tertiary) grind targets must be specified. As has been pointed out in a recent paper by Bazin and Hodouin (2001), there is little or no information in the literature to assist plant engineers in the selection of optimum grind targets for complex ore deposits, so current practice is primarily based on rules-of-thumb and experience. This problem is further compounded by the fact that once grind targets have been selected for a particular operation, the assessment and adjustment of these targets based on plant surveys is extremely difficult, time consuming and expensive, and is often not attempted unless the plant significantly underperforms relative to expectation. It is therefore clear that the development of a practical quantitative approach to this problem is a high priority for flotation research and development studies."

The Bureau of Mines, at the request of local authorities in Rock Springs, Wyo., investigated and conducted through contracts a multistage program of exploratory drilling and pumped-slurry backfilling of 15 areas of potential subsidence in abandoned mine workings underneath that community. Initially, the Bureau in 1969 had recommended a program of gravity blind flushing of some of the inaccessible mine voids, and in 1970 a new technique, the pumped-slurry injection process, was tested for the first time in a site adjacent to the city's area of severe surface subsidence. Success of this initial testing program, and of a large-scale project in Scranton, Pa., led to further large- scale projects, funded by Congress, that resulted in the successful back- filling not only of all 15 target areas of potential subsidence in Rock Springs, but also of several areas in other States. Total cost of the projects in Rock Springs, including the original pumped-slurry test, was $3,243,993. A total of about 923,000 tons of sand was injected hydraulically into mine voids, rendering 178 acres of residential and central-downtown areas of Rock Springs less susceptible to subsidence damage. The pumped-slurry method was proved to be much superior to the gravity blind flushing method in term of the amount of solids that could be injected underground through a single borehole. However, there are special conditions that make this technique more or less applicable in different areas or underground configurations, as noted in the report's conclusions.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880s with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978 - 1981 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6 per cent Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 per cent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to 1 mm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of six to seven years.

This paper presents the results of a unique study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from 2016 to 2019 to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on shale gas well casing integrity and underground miner safety and health. At both deep and shallow cover instrumentation sites, surface subsidence measurements, subsurface in-place inclinometer measurements, and underground pillar pressure measurements were conducted as longwall panels were mined. Comparisons of the deep and shallow cover test site results with those from a similar study under medium cover reveal an interesting longwall-induced response scenario. Under shallow and medium covers, measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are one order of magnitude higher than those measured under deep cover. Conversely, measured vertical compressions under deep cover are one order of magnitude higher than those under shallow and medium covers. However, FLAC3D simulations of the casings indicate that, in all three cases, the P-110 production casings remain intact under longwall-induced deformations and compressions, which has serious implications for future mine design in areas where shale gas wells have been drilled ahead of mining.

Excavation for The Bow, EnCana, in downtown Calgary, occurred between May 2007 and September 2008. A monitoring programme was used to determine the behaviour of the shoring wall, soil and bedrock during the excavation for the 21 metre (69 ft) deep excavation with a footprint of approximately 17,000 m2 (183,000 sq ft). Results from the inclinometer readings indicated that significant horizontal movement due to a weak rock layer and shear band effect. These modes of movement account for up to 100 mm (4.0 in) and 45 mm (1.8 in) of lateral deflection, respectively. Based upon the results of the monitoring programme, rock samples were collected from the weak mudstone bedrock, with great difficulty, to determine the strength and deformation parameters. Results from the uniaxial compression tests indicate a UCS around 830 kPa (120 psi) and elastic modulus between 80 and 180 MPa (11 and 26 ksi). Mohr-Columb parameters were determined to be c' = 340 kPa (49 psi) and f' = 24°. Residual strengths were determined to be c'r = 0 and f'r = 15°. Using the results of the laboratory tests and field investigation records, an initial finite element analysis was conducted. Results of the analysis show good correlation when compared with the observed monitoring deformation, indicating accurate portrayal of rock parameters. Additional analysis and investigation is required to determine the principal horizontal stresses in magnitude and direction.

Many Americans have seen Greenland while flying over it on their way to or from Europe. Few have visited this largest island in the world. Portions of the 20 percent of the territory that are not ice-covered are highly mineralized. Greenland could become very productive if the present interest in exploration increases. The people and Greenland’s history The population of Greenland is 57,000. Twenty percent are Europeans, mainly of Danish decent, while 80percent are native Greenlandic or mixed Greenlandic-European. The native population is the same as the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. They speak the same language.

In late 1989, first-pass reconnaissance exploration delineated a 4km x 6km geochem- ically anomalous area centred 10km WNW of Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands Province at 6¦13'S and 145047'E. The area, named the Basangka prospect, lies between 2 200 and 2 400m asl. Interest in the area was prompted by a 14ppm Au assay of a silica-pyrite breccia float sample taken near Henkai village. The prospect was defined after several acid-leached silica- pyrite breccia and comb textured quartz float samples returned assays above lppm Au and relatively high Ag. Very encouraging and anomalous Au values were obtained from panned concentrates, despite the absence of visible Au colours. Several pan concentrates returned greater than 1mg Au and it is believed that the Au occurs as inclusions within iron oxides which were originally pyrite. In this early stage of prospect exploration, any Au value above 0.lppm in- 150# fraction stream sediments is treated as anomalous. Rock chips, panned concentrates and -150# fraction geochemistry all vividly define the areas of interest at Basangka.
