Coal has been mined by hydraulic means in various countries, i.e., the hydraulic excavation as well as the hydraulic transportation of coal has been practiced. The hydraulic breaking (excavating) of the coal dealt with in this report is done with a monitor directing a continuous jet of water against the coal, pressures of the water fed to the monitor range from 1500 to 2500 psi at 1000 to 2100 gallons per minute Transportation of the coal from the face is by fluming if a gradient exists in excess of 2 or, when a favorable gradient does not exist, the coal is pumped from the face by various types of pumps which can also provide a means of hoisting the coal to a higher elevation as required. This report presents: 1.) preliminary design and systems specifications of a demonstration miner (referred to in this report as a hydrominer), 2.) mining configurations showing good promise for typical U.S. thick coal seams in three seam pitch categories, (0° - 7° = Flat, 8° - 250 = Moderately pitching, 26° - 90° = Steeply pitching), along with cost and performance analyses for each system, 3.) a definition of a test program that will provide sufficient engineering data for the design of a water jet cutting head adequate to cut coal in those typical U.S. thick coal seams The cost analysis data showed hydraulic methods to be economically competitive with present thick seam raining methods. It was also obvious from studies of thick seam methods that the hydromonitor coal breaking techniques are more effective in removing most of the coal with its long reach of 60 ft. (or more), is a safer mining system, and produces very low coal-dust content in the air (usually less than 0.25 to 0.5 mg/cubic meter). It is recommended that the USBM sponsor a full fledged continuation of the hydraulic mining program: (a) lab, test, (b) preliminary field test, (c) full scale mine section demonstration.

The ever more present necessity for greater precision in foundation structures on vertical piles subject to horizontal forces applied to the heads, in the light of of the latest knowledge about the elastic-plastic behaviour of the soil has led to the use of numerical calculation for the formulation of a general resolution method for the problem. The calculation method that will be set out, applicable to piles with inertia moments variable discreetly along their axes is especially useful when studying steel structures for medium and large tonnage vessels for which the metal piles are often constructed for the assembly of section of equal external diameter but different thickness and therefore different inertia moments. Two examples are given of constructions whose foundations have been projected with these calculation tools, one in the railway sector (foundation pile for the river Nera viaduct - Italy) important for the limitation of horizontal relative deck displacement, the other maritime (Dolphins of the petroleum pier of the port of Bandar Abbas - Iran).

Objective To develop safety training tools for mine safety and health professionals that fill gaps in currently available materials. Background Over the past 4 years, NIOSH has developed and released a series of training videos targeted at underground mine safety. These videos were developed in close cooperation with the mining industry and safety training professionals and were intended to provide realistic, interesting, effective training to both new hires and experienced miners. The videos cover the mining cycle, starting with the breaking of the rock (Handling Explosives in Modern Mines), making certain the work area is safe after a blast (Rock Falls— Preventing Rock Fall Injuries in Underground Mines), installation of ground supports and recognition of failed supports (Miner Mike Saves the Day), and hauling both ore and materials in the mine (Hazards in Motion). A separate video (Hidden Scars) captures the story of a fatal rock burst through an interview with a miner who nearly died and who lost his partner in the accident. These videos have been extremely popular in the mining industry and are being used across the nation as well as in 18 other countries. Two of them, Rock Falls and Miner Mike Saves the Day, have won Alice Hamilton awards, NIOSH’s highest recognition for Excellence in Occupational Safety and Health, in the Educational Materials category. Approach A recently completed independent evaluation of the SRL mining videos identified five themes that mine safety trainers consider necessary for successful training materials: high quality, credibility, accurate content, effectiveness, and an engaging nature. All of the NIOSH videos were rated very high for each theme. Using these measures of effectiveness, a more difficult challenge has been undertaken. Much has been written in the mining industry about the coming turnover in employment. The average age of miners in the United States is approaching 50, and many of the “experts” will be leaving the industry as they reach retirement age. The mining industry, like many industries involving skilled labor, relies heavily on a master-apprentice relationship between new hires and older miners. New hands learn from experienced miners. Their learning falls into three primary categories—they learn what’s important to know, they learn how to do things correctly and safely, and they learn the culture.

The presence of hydrogen sulphide in sewerage systems leads to severe concrete corrosion. Acid causes breakdown of the concrete matrix, and attacks reinforcement. Older sewer systems under acid attack are often found to be acutely corroded, sometimes after short operational periods. Consequently secondary liners are now almost always used. Polymer concrete is extremely acid resistant and if used in segmental linings can forgo the need for a secondary lining. Combined with fibers and/or GFRP rebar Polymer Concrete can produce a very strong acid resistant lining, saving considerable time in the installation of additional liners. This paper explains the problems and advantages of using Polymer concrete in segmentaly lined wastewater tunnels, addressing areas of design, cost, and programming.

Discussion is presented by Prof. King and Dr. Schneider of the paper by Lin, Gomez and Finch published in Trans.IMM C, vol.104, 1995, p.C155-C161. They conclude that the correction procedures used for simulated observations of simulated capped spheres are not reliable when applied to mineralogical data and that their relative ranking should not be extrapolated to other situations. Properly regularised solutions obtained with the use of appropriate kernels can be safely used for routine mineral liberation work and can be calibrated accurately against real mineralogical samples in the laboratory

In 1944, the 78th congress of the United States enacted Public Law 290, which directed the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Bureau of Mines, to furnish industry with basic information and cost data for the development of a synthetic liquid fuels industry. Recently published information with respect to the cost of synthetic liquid fuels processes indicates a wide variation in estimated results. To clarify the results and inconsistencies for the hydrogenation of coal, the Bureau of Mines has prepared preliminary designs and calculated detailed investment costs from which the operating costs to produce 30,000 barrels per day of liquid products, mainly gasoline, by coal hydrogenation were obtained.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. "The Williams Mine processes, on average, 6,450 t/d of gold bearing ore using two parallel grinding circuits, leaching and C.1.P., carbon stripping, electrowinning and refining. At present, each grinding circuit consists of a SAG mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier and a ball mill in closed circuit with two stages of cyclones.Since grinding has always constituted the largest portion of milling costs, the Williams Mine has been proactive in trying to reduce such costs through innovative changes. One project under consideration is the replacement of one spiral classifier by a vibrating screen.This paper discusses the testwork performed to evaluate the replacement of one spiral classifier by a vibrating screen, and the preliminary engineering performed to date.IntroductionThe Williams Mine, located in northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 kilometres east of Marathon, is part of the Hernia gold camp. The mine is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation and is owned by the Teck Corporation and Homestake Canada Incorporated. Operation of the mine started in October 1985 at a rate of 3,000 t/d. After a mill expansion in August 1988, throughput increased to 6,000 t/d. Production has increased steadily since the mill expansion and in 1995, an average of 6,450 t/d of ore was processed at a recovery of 95.1 %."

This article introduces a computer model, which emphasizes panel design for draglines deployed in direct side-casting mode. The study covers flat and inclined coal-seam conditions with the dragline operating along the strike-line. Two casting methods are embedded in the model: material is placed in the open set adjacent to the one on which the dragline is located (the DNS method) and material is placed in the open set adjacent to the one the dragline excavates (the DND method). While in the first method the unproductive walking time is reduced as the set is enlarged, in the second method the cycle time is lessened as the dragline swings along an acute angle. The side-casting model is shaped so as to provide several panel configurations instead of a single one to conform to the characteristics for an opencast mine. This is achieved by assigning the pit width an interval of values ranging from a minimum to a maximum. The model includes solutions to other critical design parameters such as: set length, swing angles at key cut and main cut positions, and required dragline reach at key cut and main cut positions. The model outcomes reveal the following: the stripping operation is largely affected when the coal-seam is inclined. The downhill spoiling mode should be applied wherever possible. The DNS pattern allows wider pit width intervals as well as longer sets and longer reaches.

Complex gold deposits are generally characterised by variable geometries, strong structural controls on grade distribution and a high-nugget effect. The use of diamond drilling and fire assays in this environment often results in an understatement of grade. Bulk samples are likely to be the closest estimators of true grade, and may be required to evaluate geological/grade risk during resource estimation/feasibility studies. Any bulk sampling program requires appropriate planning and implementation. The planning stage should attempt to delimit the extent and nature of mineralisation; characterise mineralogy and metallurgical properties of the ore; and define bulk sample size and how it will be sampled/processed. The approach to sample processing will be governed by the results of metallurgical testing and geological knowledge. Careful design of sampling protocols must be undertaken through material characterisation, understanding of gold particle sizing and the application of GyÆs Sampling Theory.

Coal, America's most abundant fossil fuel, is expected to play a key role in our pursuit of energy independence. A substantial increase in coal exploitation will be required if we are to fulfill our future energy needs. It is essential that new developments continue if stable coal prices are to be achieved and maintained. The challenge of the mining industry is to continue these developments in the face of problems related to increasing labor costs, inflation and environmental restoration. With expectations of increased activity in surface coal mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has authorized this study to determine the preliminary economic and technologic feasibility of underspoil haulage in area strip coal mines and to identify geologic and geographic areas where such a system could be used. These objectives were met by literature search, data-gathering visits to several active area strip mines and by analyzing various haulage systems that were superimposed on three model mines. Potential advantages of such a system include: 1) improved mine design; 2) lower mine operating costs; 3) improved land reclamation; 4) lower manpower requirements; 5) lower mobile equipment requirements; and 6) smaller, less sophisticated maintenance facilities.

To investigate the dimensional effect on shock wave propagation in jointed rock masses, a 2-D and a 3-D calculation of a site test are performed respectively by using Discrete Element Method, the simulated results are compared with test data. It shows that, in modelling shock wave propagation and attenuation in jointed rock masses, when the explosive along explosion chamber is long enough and the joints are dense enough or uniformly distributed, the model can be considered as plane-strain problem, 2-D results are good enough to fit with test data. 2-D modelling, with much more details of rock masses taken into account, can be applied to make critical engineering judgements instead of 3-D modelling in some cases.

This report documents the program conducted to demonstrate the application of a flywheel-powered propulsion system to underground mining shuttle cars. Such application can replace the present electrical trailing cable common to most shuttle cars and thereby eliminate those safety hazards, maintenance problems, and haulage route limitations inherent in the trailing cable. Described are the activities undertaken to specify and design a flywheel of optimum size, shape, and material; to identify the best concepts of input and output systems; and to achieve installation of the power package into a shuttle car. The resultant Flywheel-Powered Shuttle Car is an FMC Model 6L shuttle car, 6-ton capacity, 20-ton gross vehicle weight, powered by a flywheel system with 4.5-kilowatt-hour usable energy. The completed vehicle was delivered to the Bureau of Mines in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, for testing and evaluation.

A thermodynamic model of KIVCET lead smelting process has been developed. The model has the capability to predict the distribution behaviors of Pb, Zn, Fe, S, O, As, and heat balance in KIVCET direct lead smelting furnace. The compositions of lead bullion, matte, slag and gaseous phases, and heat balance are calculated. The effect of the ratio between oxygen and feed on the chemistry of the smelt and heat balance of the coke checker has been simulated and discussed. The thermodynamic model also helps to understand the tapping issue of the lead bullion. In this paper, some applications of this model in the industry have been presented.

"Conventional base metal milling practice normally consists of crushing, grinding and cyclone classification followed by flotation. It is the authors' belief that the commencement of flotation after cyclone classification leads to inferior metallurgical results and that implementation of flotation of grinding mill discharges can result in increased recovery due to reduced overgrinding, reduced activation of contaminating minerals and improved dewatering circuit results due to the production of coarser concentrates.The concept of recovering minerals from the discharge of grinding mills is not new! Gold concentrators have utilized jigs and flotation cells while iron ore plants have employed magnetic separators to recover gold and magnetite respectively from the discharge of grinding mills. More recently, a Reichert cone has been used to recover sulphide and oxide base metal minerals from screened rod mill discharge. 1To the authors' knowledge, the first application of flotation of base metal minerals from the discharge of a production plant grinding mill was at the Lake Dufault concentrator of Corpor'1tion Falcon bridge Copper. Located 10 miles north of Noranda, Quebec the Lake Dufault concentrator commenced operations in August, 1964.The installation of flot11tion cells in the Lake Dufault grinding circuit proved so successful that an identical system was installed in the Manibridge concentrator of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Located 90 miles southwest of Thompson, Manitoba the Mamibridge concentrator commenced operations in June, 1971 and due to exhaustion of economic ore reserves discontinued production in May 1977."

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. Analysis for pillar extraction potential (A-PEP) is an intelligent tool, which could be used as a preliminary output indicator when considering the secondary extraction of regional support pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa. The safe and economic extraction of underground coal pillars is of paramount significance and importance to the South African coalmining industry to ensure continuity of supply of this fossil fuel. Pillar extraction practices in South Africa have been responsible a significant proportion of safety and fatality statistics in relation to its relative output (less than 5 per cent of total South African coal production) and, as a result, research was undertaken in local pillar extraction operations and extended to similar operations in New South Wales, Australia to assess a way forward for pillar extraction in South Africa. It was found that, although little in the way of new technologies has emerged in this field in the recent past, significant contributions could be made in the field of risk analysis to obtain a generic design methodology for pillar extraction in South Africa. The resultant A-PEP tool to assess pillar extraction potential is based on certain physical, risk and economic factors, which combine to indicate operational success in terms of economic, health and safety attributes. At the time of A-PEP?s development there was alack of operating underground coal pillar extraction operations, which made it difficult to validate its applicability. Since then, however, A-PEP has been successfully tested and validated against two unique underground coal pillar operations, which is the discussion of this paper. One operation is situated in the Witbank coalfield and is extracting pillars, which are 20 years old and at a depth of 80 metres below surface, while the other operation is situated in the Highveld coalfield-which is extracting 6 month-old-pillars underneath a massive dolerite sill at a depth of 220 metres. A-PEP has shown that its predictive nature is consistent the workings at both operations, irrespective of their unique conditions, and as such it can be successfully used as a mine planning tool. The A-PEP mine planning tool thus represents a positive step toward an integrated approach to underground coal pillar extraction when considering legal and operational aspects, which could form the basis for legislative guidelines when considering the future of pillar extraction in South Africa.
