The Bureau of Mines has developed a photoelectric concentrator apparatus which is capable of collecting incremental products from the discharge of wet concentrating tables. The instrument uses photoelectric cells as sensors to differentiate between two products which have differences in color or reflectivity. The photocells provide a signal that controls a mobile splitting device that separates the products. Tests conducted on a wet table demonstrated the ability of the apparatus to separate a product containing 81.5 percent pyrite from a lower-grade product containing only 68.8 percent pyrite. The photoelectric concentrator should have a broad application for collecting concentrates with visible color or reflectivity differences from wet concentrating tables.

A series of stemming confinement tests were conducted at a test site near Vernal, Utah. The purpose of the study was to determine the relative performance of various stemming enhancement “plugs”, stem types and loading configurations. The stemming performance was quantified in terms of: . Stem confinement time . Stem ejection velocity . Ground swell velocity . Ground vibration . Air blast . Crater formation Of primary interest was the performance of a new spherical stemming enhancement plug. The initial findings indicate that the hard plastic spheres improved blast performance when used appropriately. Their ability to improve blast performance is reduced when used in over confined or severely underconfined conditions. The study also evaluated the effects of air decking on stemming confinement and explosive performance.

This final report presents results of a program to develop a new conveyor system, adaptable to existing miners or loaders, which reduces the noise level to 90 dBA without reducing machine performance. The trial conveyor design consists of a main conveyor and a swinging tail conveyor. The main conveyor incorporates a rubber-covered return guide roller, rubber mounting of pillow blocks, rubber cover of the return bed, and a rubber belt running between the flight chain and the conveyor bed plate. Testing took place in a surface coal pit and underground at the Peabody Spur Mines in Boonville, Indiana. Noise Levels as low as 90 dSA were observed on the surface and 93/94 dRA underground. Recommendations for further work are also presented.

Since the advent of the first airborne electromagnetic system, it has been evident that such systems were inherently limited to shallow depths of exploration of the orderof 100 to 200 feet. Hence in 1948 the author and his associates commenced a study of the feasibility of applying natural audio frequency magnetic fields to investigation of the electrical properties of the subsurface in order to provide a system capable of overcoming this limitation. This research culminated, in the summer of 1958, in the development of a new airborne prospecting device — AFMAG. This device has detected surface massive sulphide bodies while flown at heights as great as 3000 feet. Hence, by inference, it is deduced that it could find similar sulphide bodies if they were buried 2500 feet below surface and the aircraft flown at 500 feet. Thus a considerable improvement over conventional airborne electro-magnetic systems is obtainable with AFMAG. Airborne exploration in mountainous terrain involving deep valley fill now becomes possible. Examples are presented of the results of actual airborne AFMAG test surveys over known deposits of massive sulphide mineralization. Interpretation of the data is discussed with particular reference to the knowledge of size, dip, depth, depth extent, and conductivity of causative bodies as deduced from the flight records. The possibility of mapping major geologic structures, for both mining and oil exploration purposes, is discussed with the aid of examples of airborne AFMAG data. INTRODUCTION Electrical prospecting with natural audio frequency electromagnetic waves as a source has, within the last three years, become a practical reality. Both airborne and ground survey instruments under the trademark "AFMAG" (for audio frequency magnetics) have been used successfully in the search for conductive mineral deposits. It is the object of this paper to discuss the principles of airborne AFMAG and to illustrate its application by means of examples obtained over known geological situations. WHY AFMAG? In view of the large number of good airborne electromagnetic systems available for purchase or contract surveying, one may well ask, "Why another new system?". Primarily the answer lies in the fact that AFMAG does not suffer from the very limited depth of exploration available with, and inherent in, any conventional airborne electromagnetic system. AFMAG is not conventional insofar as an artificial transmitter is not required. Only a receiving and detecting device is employed. The electromagnetic fields measured are those from millions of electrical discharges in the atmosphere (e.g;..- lightning strokes). Their random distribution in time and space make these fields difficult to employ and it is only with recent advances in the electronics of geophysical instrumentation that this has become possible. This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

A survey of endomycorrhizal fungi occurring on orphan coalmine lands in Western and Eastern Kentucky revealed a great diversity of species present. Thus a large number of fungi are available for isolation and evalution for enhancing revegetation of mined land. Endomycorrhizal fungi isolated from orphan mines stimulated growth of sweetgum seedlings on mine soil at low fertilisation but inhibited growth at high fertilization; this growth inhibition at high fertilization did not occur with plants growing on peat-perlite. Banding of endomycorrbizal inoculum was not advantageous, compared with incorporation of inoculum throughout the growth medium, for production of mycorrhizal sweetgum seedlings. Newly reclaimed mine spoils were nearly nonmycorrhizal, compared with land reclaimed four or eight years earlier. A procedure for isolation of single-spore cultures of endomycorrhizal fungi was developed; this procedure is necessary for studies of ecotypic variability. A practical procedure using container-grown Pisolithus tinctorius-infected shortleaf pine seedlings for production of large numbers of bareroot pine seedlings infected with P. tinctorius for mined land reclamation was demonstrated.

"Quebec Cartier Mining operates a pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, QC. Grinding, agglomeration and pellets induration are the three main steps in the preparation of iron oxide pellets. In 1998, following different recommendations, the company increased the speed of one of its ball mill in order to increase the grinding efficiency of the machine. As expected, the increased speed lead to an increase of the power draught, which did not produce the expected increase of fineness of grind, neither its allows to increase the mill throughput. The change of behaviour of the mill could hardly be understood by comparison of discharge size distribution at initial and modified mill rotation speed. On the other hand, the use of the selection function from a population balance model provides an insight of the changes that occurred in the mill. This paper reviews the various steps required for the estimation of a grinding mill selection function. Results of the calibration to Quebec Cartier grinding mills show that the increase in the mill speed leads to higher rate of breakage of coarse particles, at the expenses of less efficient breakage of medium and fine size particles. In the case of the studied mill, breakage of coarse particles was probably not the critical step of the mill operation. INTRODUCTIONOre size reduction is the major energy consumption step in any mineral processing operations (Austin et al., 1984). Size reduction is required to either liberate valuable minerals from the gangue minerals in which they are imbedded, or to increase the specific surface of the ground material. Plant engineers continuously face the challenge to find grinding machines, operating conditions or grinding circuit flowsheet configurations that could improve the size reduction process at lower energy or m6dia consumption."

Previous studies have shown that fracturing of roof strata precedes ultimate failure, and that the fracture development causes an accompanying increase in the apparent resistivity of the strata. Using this principal, a microprocessor controlled resistivity roof fall warning system (RRFWS) was developed that automatically sequences through and records up to 32 electrodes that may serve as either voltage or current electrodes. This capability permits increased coverage with a minimal number of required electrodes. The data is stored in a nonvolatile memory and on an optional printout, making the system nonsusceptible to loss of mine-power. To further save battery power, the system's electronics shut down between readings, except for a carbon molybdenum steel real-time clock. At a preprogramed interval, the RRFWS reactivates and repeats the sequence. If the absolute change or the rate of change of resistivity exceeds a predetermined limit the system is capable of sounding an alarm. In addition to the monitor, a stainless steel mod led split-set electrode was also developed that permits long-term corrosion-free contact.

On Friday, May 27, 1983 at about 6 p.m., an avalanche occurred at the Revenue-Virginius Mine. Six mine personnel and two contract diamond drillers were trapped when the avalanche covered and blocked the portal, the only access into the mine. The San Juan Mountain Range in southwestern Colorado is an old volcanic caldera. It has dikes and other intrusions, many of which are mineralized with sulfide ores rich in silver, gold, lead, zinc and copper. Several peaks rise above 4,260 m (14,000 ft) and the district has been the location of avalanches dating back to prehistoric times. This is evidenced by the numerous snow-slide chutes that are infamous enough to be named on topographic maps.

Mineral production was of little significance in the country's economy, and Bangladesh was not a world-ranked producer of any mineral commodity during 1977. Natural gas was the most important mineral exploited; however, reserves were sufficient to allow for much greater production, Economically, Bangladesh made some progress in 1977-782 in its struggle against poverty, underdevelopment, and rapidly increasing population. The gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8%, mainly owing to a 13% increase in food grain production, the key economic indicator in this highly agricultural nation. GDP at current prices dropped slightly in Fiscal Year (FY) 1976.77 to $6.6 billion3 and rose to $7.2 billion in FY 1977.78. The population rose from 81 million in FY 1975-76 to about 85 million in FY 1977-78, resulting in an increase of per capita GDP from $83 to $85 during the same period. The high annual population growth rate, over 3% in 1976 and about 2.8% in 1977, was recognized by the Government as the main problem facing the country. Average density was 525 people per square kilometer. A similar density would have the entire world population living within the continental United States.

The paper describes the geology of the gold deposits of the Yanacocha district, Northern Perú. The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, whose deposits are located in the Andes of norther in Perú. Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times, but modern exploration that began in the 1960’s targeted only copper and silver. Current mining is entirely by open pit methods with heap leach recovery. Production in 2003 was from the Cerro Yanacocha deposit and the La Quinua fluvioglacial deposit. La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this report. However, Yanacocha is described as a high-sulfidation epithermal deposit occurring in pyroclastic rocks. The success of Yanacocha has made this type of target among the most sought after by exploration companies worldwide. The important characteristics of the geology of Yanacocha are reviewed below, along with some specifics of exploration techniques used in the district.

The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. The Early Mesoproterozoic (1.6–1.4 Ga) crustal basement of the Cathaysia Block in South China is the ore source bed for the world-famous Nanling W–Sn polymetallic mineralisation.CITATION:Li, H, 2015. Preliminary laboratory experiments have been conducted by the Bureau of Mines to define the influence of bit geometry on methane ignitions as a step toward establishing safer mining-machine operating parameters. The experimental system was designed to simulate the operation of a continuous mining machine, using a drum-type cutterhead of normal diameter with a narrow cross section, permitting full-diameter drum cutting tests to be run on material representative of sandstone lenses (or inclusions) in coal seams. Two conical bit types were tested at shallow depths of cut with three drum speeds. Bits that rotated in the mounting block during testing did not produce ignitions. The ignition frequency for used bits was three to four times greater than for new bits at the same kerf depth.

The purpose of the initial research performed under this contract was to determine the margins of safety in explosion-proof (XP) enclosures, which were designed and certified according to the current schedule (Schedule 2G). Results from this work provide baseline data on the current schedule, from which a new schedule can be formulated to give equal or greater levels of safety. Results and discoveries in the initial work led to an expansion of the contract to cover, additionally, weld quality in enclosure fabrication, reliability of enclosures with windows and lenses, and performance tests for enclosure qualification. Finite element calculations and hydrostatic tests revealed wide variations in the margins of safety in the enclosures studied; however, only one enclosure had a safety factor which was less than one. Results from a weld quality survey led to the recommendation of AWS Welding Standard D14.4 for the fabrication of XP enclosures. Based on other work, accelerated aging tests were recommended for qualifying plastics and adhesives that are used in some enclosures, and a Structural Performance Test was developed to test enclosure strength for a minimum static pressure of 150 psig.

Low strain dynamic tests are performed to evaluate the structural integrity of driven or cast-in-place concrete piles. This type of testing requires minimal pile preparation, and is simply performed by attaching an accelerometer to the pile head and striking the pile head with a hand held hammer. The measured data is processed by a dedicated system, inspected for wave reflections, and interpreted based on one dimensional wave propagation theory. Piles are normally tested shortly after installation so that problems can be identified early and corrective measures taken before construction of the superstructure. However, evaluation of existing foundations is occasionally required. Often, pile installation records are not available rendering impossible any rational foundation reanalysis. This paper discusses three case histories where low strain dynamic measurements allowed determination of pile lengths and structural integrity under existing structures where pile heads were not accessible.

The elimination of the incidence of silicosis in employees in industries such as mining and pottery is an ongoing international initiative. After many decades of industrial activity in these industries and many dollars spent on preventative measures, silicosis is still occurring. The exposure-prevention measures taken so far have certainly improved the working environment dust concentrations; however, the illness is still regularly diagnosed in workers. More funding is needed for interventions to improve working conditions. Many aspects of dust prevention and suppression will be researched and exposure assessment methodologies and equipment will need to be reviewed for the purposes of improvements in effectiveness. This paper presents results from laboratory tests carried out on gravimetric sampling pumps and cyclones. It highlights the erratic flow produced by gravimetric pumps of three different manufacturers who claim their respective pumps are equipped with flow stabilisers. The standard BS EN 1232:1997 is used as a basis for the tests. A method, albeit impractical for fieldwork, is shown for the elimination of the pulsation in the flow. This method serves to prove the method and protocol used in this study. The pressure loss caused air-flow resistance of cyclones is measured. The air inlet aperture size of cyclones is measured. The large discrepancy in the two criteria between individual cyclones is shown. The paper concludes that all the pumps tested failed the prescribed limits of BS EN 1232:1997 regarding the pulsation of the gravimetric sampling flow. The difference in flow characteristics of the cyclones, together with the erratic flow produced by the pumps, throws into question the accuracy of the exposure assessments. It is suggested that substantial resources be channelled towards solving these flow problems in parallel with measures taken to reduce exposure. In principle, the accurate assessment of exposure and dust concentration levels is a prerequisite for effective management of the problem of silicosis.

Business says that location is a primary component of being successful. So too is the importance of location in blasting. For blast seismograph data to be useful, the location of the blast and seismograph must be clearly documented. Another location of importance is that of a nearby structure. Establishing the spatial relationships between the blast, seismograph and nearby structures, allows the blaster to correctly interpret the data, evaluate the performance of the blast and gauge the validity of any complaints.

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cementitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of permanent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the US. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending on depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting insignificant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating a polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mechanics of fuming of iron-carbon melts during top-blowing with oxygen. Melts weighing 45 lb were prepared in an induction furnace and blown with oxygen by means of water-cooled lances. The rate of fuming was measured and correlated with the operating variables. The data showed that the primary cause of fuming was a boil at the bath surface in the impingement zone of the oxygen jet. Nucleation of the carbon monoxide bubbles producing the boil was apparently brought about by the precipitation of an oxide phase. The actual fuming mechanism involved partial oxidation and vaporization of bubble films and fine metal spray generated by the bursting of the bubbles. Bubbles that formed outside the impingement zone produced little fume. The distribution of trace elements between the metal and fume strongly indicated that the fume contained fine spray particles as well as particles that had condensed from vapor. The rate of fuming was found to be proportional to the carbon content of the metal) the concentration of oxygen in the jet) and the bath temperature) provided that a continuous boil occurred. In the absence of a boil) very little fume was produced.
