Self-diffusion coefficients of copper in molten copper have been measured by the capillary reservoir method in the temperature range 1140o to 1260°C. The results can be represented by the equation D = [(1.46 * 0.01) x 10-3) exp [(-9710 * 710)/RT] cm2/sec. The energy of activation agrees within the limit of experimental uncertainty with that for viscous flow. The relationship between the diffusivity and coefficient of viscosity is best described by the equation D = kT/4pnr cm2/sec. MEASUREMENT was made of the self-diffusion coefficient of copper in molten copper in the temperature range 1413º to 1533ºK, using the capillary reservoir technique and CU64 as the radioactive tracer.The procedures for filling the capillaries, making the diffusion run and evaluating Dcu from the counting results were the same as described previously.1,2 All experimental operations involving the melt were carried out in a purified argon atmosphere. A graphite crucible, enclosed in a McDanel tube, was used as a container for the melt because of its satisfactory nature as a refractory material and the low solubility of carbon in copper. Graphite was also used for the capillary material. A McDanel thermocouple sheath, to which graphite radiation shields were affixed, was used to hold the capillaries. By moving this sheath through a rubber seal at the top of the McDanel tube, the capillaries could be lowered into or raised out of the melt. A Globar furnace with a constant temperature zone (± 2°C) of 2 in. was used to heat the assembly. The Dos Pobres Mine is a copper oxide heap-leach mine located near Safford, Arizona. Mine production is 180,000 tons (163,293 tonnes) per day with a stripping ratio of 2:1. During the startup phase of the mine, the required fragmentation size was easy to achieve as the ore was highly weathered and fractured near the surface. As the mine depth increased, the proper fragmentation size became harder to achieve due to less weathering and different rock types. Because copper recovery increases as crusher product size decreases, achieving the appropriate product size at the crusher is the operating priority. The Engineering Department started a project to improve fragmentation through blasting and thus increase throughput in the crushing system. It soon became clear that input from other departments was going to be required to make this a safe and economical project. Therefore the Crush and Convey and Ore Control departments worked together to evaluate all available data on blast patterns and explosive loads and tracked performance and results. Using image analysis, Drill Energy Index and databases, we have been able to improve fragmentation size and verify the results while controlling costs.

This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Mount Isa Mines Limited first installed electronic data processing equipment in 1959. The decision to replace this equipment with a computer was motivated by the need for greater processing power and the availability of new and less expensive computers. Consideration of hardware software and delivery features of available equipment, resulted in the selectIon of an ICT 1900 series computer which was installed in March 1966. Special air-conditioning and power stabilization equipment was also required.Systems design and programming was carried out by personnel recruited from within the Company and trained by the computer manufacturer. Early work was hindered by the problems of remote location.Initial applications were basically accounting functions whIch were taken over from the EDP installation. Subsequently computer applIcatIOns of a more complex technical nature have been undertaken. Future work will include both "scientific" and data processing applications.

Particle motion in fluids is a subject of considerable practical importance to engineers working in fields such as hydraulics, river mechanics, chemical engineering and mineral processing. Many mathematical models have been proposed to predict the terminal settling velocities of particles in a fluid medium. The selection of an appropriate mathematical model has, therefore, become a challenging task for practicing engineers. This paper reports on an attempt to identify some of the useful models found in the literature for predicting particle-settling velocities in a fluid under free- and hindered-settling conditions. From this study, it was concluded that there is no well-accepted model validated by experimental data available for predicting particle hindered-settling velocities in a suspension of polydisperse and polydens particles. Collective efforts should, therefore, be made towards developing a hindered-settling model, as this is an absolute prerequisite for many model structures in mineral processing and other engineering disciplines.

"Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in the minerals industry with proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering, mineralogy and dust levels. Increments of typically two minutes are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of contained elements. Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Crushed ore increments can be diverted based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal or marginal material to a stockpile for separate processing. Bulk sorting allows material to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending to achieve consistency for process feed. Parameters used for decisions may be primary metal content, deleterious component content, other process parameter, or a combination of these. Process parameter may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, basicity, or the content of an “indicator” element (such as Si indicating material hardness). Benefits will be discussed based on case studies in copper and iron ore.IntroductionAs operators of process plants strive to remain competitive as capital and operating costs increase and commodity prices fluctuate, more focus has been directed at incremental performance improvements at incremental cost rather than major expansions to increase output. The philosophy of working smarter allows plants to adopt technologies proven in other industry sectors to minimise risk. This paper discusses one such technology that the minerals sector is adopting and has found to be safe, reliable and accurate with paybacks of weeks in most applications. New applications continue to be found and major benefits realised at various stages in the processing and handling of ores and products."

In the event that a blasting complaint proceeds to litigation your case will not be decided on “reasonable doubt” as in criminal trials. Instead, the jury will be instructed to decide guilt or innocence on a “preponderance of the evidence” presented. A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

In recent development of piled raft design, the contribution of both raft and piles to tolerate the loads is taken into account, depending on the stiffness and contributions of involved elements i.e.; piles, raft and surrounding soil. The piles are usually required not to ensure the overall stability of the foundation but to act as settlement reducers. One alternative method of foundation design is therefore to introduce piles purely as a means of improving or enhancing the stiffness of the base soil by structurally disconnecting the piles from the raft. In this paper, two and three dimensional finite element analysis of disconnected pile-raft systems are performed on three case studies including a 12-storey residential building in Iran, a 39-storey twin tower in Indonesia, and the 256m height of Messeturm tower in Frankfurt, Germany. The analysis include different geometrical parameters, e.g., pile spacing and embedment length, arrangement and raft thickness for foundation system to obtain the optimized design functions and to clarify the role of each parameter and method of analysis. The parametric study results and comparison to a few field measurements indicate that by concentrating the piles in the central area of the raft foundation leads to the optimum design with the minimum total length of piles. This achievement can be considered as a criterion for project cost efficiency. On the other hand, disconnected piled-raft systems can significantly reduce the settlements and raft internal bending moments. Finally, the comparison indicates that simple and faster 2D analysis has almost the identical results to 3D analysis which is complicated and time consuming.

In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a hand-held instrument that uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture. This instrument is called the Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM). In this study, NIOSH personnel accompanied Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors on their routine band surveys in five and three underground coal mines in MSHA District 2 (PA) and District 11 (AL), respectively. While underground, NIOSH personnel and MSHA inspectors used the CDEM to assess the explosibilities of the dust samples. The values of percent incombustible content (% IC) determined by the CDEM agreed well with those obtained later by low temperature ashing (LTA) in both MSHA and NIOSH laboratories. Further, the meter identified some samples as potentially explosible that LTA analysis had found to possess sufficient rock dust for inerting. The CDEM provides more information on the hazards in the mine. Rapid identification of areas with explosible dust mixtures using the CDEM allows for immediate intervention rather than a wait of several weeks for laboratory analysis.

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

At the Twin Cities "lining Research Center (TCMRC) a project is underway to determine how varying the parameters of a coal-cutting process would affect the amount and the size distribution of the generated dust. The cutting parameters being investigated are the cutting speed, depth of cut and shape of the cutting, tool. To accomplish this research ft is necessary to collect and transport the coal dust venerated at the cutting tool to measuring instruments for analysis. The purpose of this contract was to develop and deliver a system of instruments for measuring the size distributions of the generated coal dust. The instruments employed are essentially those developed for particulate air pollution measurements (1, 2). The instrument system covers a particle size range of 0.005 to 20 microns and is capable of performing in situ measurement and presenting data in real time.

The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and constructed in 1785. The Capitol is of great historic and architectural significance to not only the Commonwealth of Virginia but to the nation. It is the oldest operating Capitol in the U.S. and required a total restoration/renovation as well as an expansion to continue to remain functional. Site conditions dictated that the expansion (a new visitor center) be placed underground on the south side of the Capitol building, requiring a 40-foot deep excavation approximately 5 feet from the Building. Because of its historic significance, every measure had to be taken to ensure the safety and function of the Capitol during construction. The construction techniques that were used to make the deep excavation and protect the historic Capitol included a tied back concrete slurry wall, jet grouting, compensation grouting, and instrumentation monitoring. This paper describes the history of the Capitol building, the techniques that were employed for construction of the deep excavation, results of the latest movement monitoring, and factors contributing to meeting the restrictive movement goals.

O curso de Engenharia de Minas sofreu uma expansão, juntamente com todo o ensino superior no país, por volta de 2005. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar as características dos cursos do país e realizar uma comparação com cursos de outros países com grande produção mineral. Foi feito um levantamento inicial a partir de informações disponíveis nos sites do MEC, INEP e das universidades. Como complemento, realizou-se um questionário com os coordenadores dos cursos de Engenharia de Minas do Brasil. Foram compilados ainda dados relativos à estrutura curricular e carga horária dos cursos de Engenharia de Minas dos EUA, Canadá, Austrália, Chile e África do Sul. Em relação à comparação das grades curriculares com os cursos de outros países, observou-se que no Brasil o curso possui uma maior cara horária de Tratamento de Minérios em detrimento da lavra. Nos demais países estudados, o foco das disciplinas é a lavra, já que nestes países a área de Tratamento de Minérios é assunto de outras Engenharias.

"The lining of a grinding mill has an important role in creating the conditions for the grinding process. The main purpose of the lining is to transfer the energy taken by the mill motor to the contents of a mill. The power draw curve of the mill, if measured with sufficiently short intervals, describes how well the lining works in lifting and mixing the material to be ground.The power draw curve can also be used for determining the volumetric filling of a mill. This new measuring technique was developed at the Pyhasalmi concentrator in 1989-90. The measuring device with its PC-connections offers an excellent tool for controlling volumetric mill filling, for maximizing throughput and for research purpose (e.g. process studies, mill linings design).The paper describes the new method and the results achieved at Outokumpu's concentrators.INTRODUCTIONVarious methods have been developed for measuring mill load; weighing, noise, etc. Weighing is one of the most reliable methods but installing the sensor to existing mills is often difficult. Besides the load measurement does not indicate the volumetric filling if the specific gravity of the mill feed fluctuates. Noise measurement has often failed with its sensitivity to various disturbance sources.As known, the power draw measurement is one of the most accurate measurements in grinding circuits and therefore it has been utilized in sophisticated control, e.g. in power peak seeking algorithms for maintaining maximum grinding efficiency.About 10 years ago power oscillation measurement was developed at Pyhasalmi concentrator. In this method the amplitude of the oscillation caused by the lifters was measured. The oscillation amplitude and the mill filling has quite a good correlation and together with the power draw measurement it could be used for maximizing mill throughput (Koivistoinen and Miettunen, 1989). The main difficulties in this method were that the dependence between mill filling and the amplitude is unlinear and that the dependence also is individual for each mill.The method developed during 1989-90 is also based on the power oscillation but on its phase shift. In principle level of the material in a mill is measured. The method has been successfully used for maximizing throughput at Pyhasalmi and Enonkoski concentrators and at Harjavalta slag concentrator."

In this study, we evaluated the ambient diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations (at the intakes and exhausts of the mine) as the entire vehicle fleet of a stone mine switched from using 35% biodiesel to using a water emulsified fuel (PuriNOx). Elemental carbon (EC) was reduced by 45% when a PuriNOx blend containing 10% water replaced 35% biodiesel and by 57% when a PuriNOx blend containing 20% water was used. Other factors such as engine duty cycle and production changes could potentially cause some day-to-day EC fluctuations, and no direct comparison to commonly used dieselfuels (No. 1 or No. 2) was achieved. Therefore, a second study was performed in a controlled “isolatedzone” environment to fametal mine, comparing PuriNOxto No.1 diesel fuel in a load haul dump vehicle. The EC fraction of the DPM was reduced by about 71% when the PuriNOx blend containing 10% water was used and by about 85% when the PuriNOx blend containing 20% water was employed. This study did not determine how the water emulsified fuel would affect the engine or power.

For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.
