P&H MinePro Services Canada is supplying Syncrude Canada three more of its model4100BOSS electric mining shovels. The shovels will be delivered during 2003. Syncrude’s oil sands operations already use five P&H shovels. The first 4100BOSS shovel was commissioned at Syncrude’s operation in northern Alberta, Canada in October 2001. The unit loads more than 9 kt/hr (10,000 stph) of unblasted oil sands. Since it began operation, the 4100BOSS has shown a 28% production increase over the four P&H 4100TS shovels also on site.

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public's safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer's paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. The hazards which naturally prevail in underground coal mines, always severe and unpredictable due to the loosely-consolidated strata in which coal is frequently found, are increased by the commonly-occurring combination of coal dust, methane, and explosives. It was recognized by the mid-nineteenth century that coal dust was the basic factor contributing to disastrous explosions killing hundreds of miners, and that the ignition of methane gas was often the source of the coal dust explosions. It was apparent that preventing the ignition of methane was a critical part of avoiding these disasters, and it was also apparent that one cause of such ignitions was the firing of explosives. In addition, it was found that dust explosions were often initiated by blown-out shots of explosives in the absence of methane.

A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.

This survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of the methane emission and control problem in U.S. bituminous coal mines. The resultant data indicate that the emission rate for any given coalbed depends primarily on the coal production rate and on mine depth, as well as on the nature of the coalbed and the surrounding strata. An excellent correlation was found between (1) the methane emission rate and (2) the product of coal production rate and mine depth for the mines in the Pittsburgh, Pocahontas Nos. 3 and 4, and the Illinois Nos. 5 and 6 coalbeds. The highest total emission rates found in U.S. bituminous coal mines were as follows, in million cubic feet per day: Monongalia County, W. Va., 39; Marion County, W. Va., 30.4; McDowell County, W. Va., 13.1; Washington County, Pa., 11.9; Greene County, Pa., 11.4; Buchanan County, Va., 21.6; Jefferson County, Ala., 10.3; and Franklin County, Ill., 6.6.

"The oil sands industry in northern Alberta disposes of the by-products of bitumen extraction into tailings ponds. The mix of tailings sand and mature fines, with gypsum added as a flocculent, constitute a waste stream called consolidated tailings or composite tails (CT). The two main challenges of the tailings disposal process are a chronic shortage of economical containment and the potential mobility of CT deposits in the event of breaching by, for example, long-term erosion, which makes abandonment of tailings ponds more complicated. Thick deposits of CT do not consolidate in adequate time to provide reassurance for abandonment of the CT containment facilities and that is why the containment must be adequately robust or the properties of CT improved for long-term stability. This paper addresses potential solutions to these problems by applying the gravity drainage of CT and quasi-homogeneous construction for containment facilities.Gravity drainage is suggested as a mechanism to facilitate the consolidation of CT in critical areas of the ponds by inserting internal sand layers within the body of the deposit. Critical CT areas are defined as areas around the perimeter of containment. The advantages of this solution are longterm stability of the disposal area by creation of stiff deposits around its perimeter and facilitation of reclamation efforts on its surface.The present solution for containment of CT deposits is not favourable from a materials balance point of view. In general, sand has become a valuable resource as it both forms the primary component of the CT matrix and becomes the containment building material. If sand is required for CT, less is available for dyke construction. This puts additional pressure on the industry as a whole to maximize the use of overburden and interburden for construction of tailings containment structures. Typically, only 50 percent of dry mine waste (overburden + interburden) is incorporated into dyke construction. The remainder of dry waste is stored either in waste dumps or in tailings ponds, consuming valuable in-pond space originally allocated to CT material. Quasi-homogeneous dykes are proposed to contain CT deposits rather than traditional minimum cross-section dykes built of overburden and/or cell sand. The quasi-homogeneous dyke may change the unfavourable material balance and lessen the construction constraints that are presently imposed on the mine/waste disposal process."

Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements at Thiess Bros Pty Ltd South Blackwater coal mine commenced in 1975.Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioncd in June 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world.The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stabilily of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Keywords: Al2O3-SiCW, Ceramic Matrix Composite, Carbothermal Reduction, Kaolin The formations of Al2O3-SiCw composite have been obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and activated carbon. The reaction temperature was controlled at between 1400°C to 1600°C. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of milling time of precursors and reaction temperature are presented. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having porous and whisker morphology.

In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. A knowledge of the mechanics of wave propagation through the earth is essential if reliable communication systems are to be designed for coal mine environments. To obtain a reliable basis from which accurate propagation predictions could be drawn, a series of theoretical Studies have been prepared for the Bureau of Mines by Mr. Ramsay Decker of Spectra Associates, Inc. through a subcontract with Collins Radio Group. These reports formulate the analytical techniques from which wee may derive frequencies and antenna configurations that yield the optimum signal-to-noise ratios over the greatest distances in mine environments. The reports of sections 2 and 4 deal with analytical techniques for determining the signal-to-noise ratio within a mine environment for loop-to-loop and line source-to-loop antenna configurations. The analytical results of these reports were then implemented into computer programs to obtain predictions concerning through-the-earth signal propagation. These preliminary predictions are based on noise data compiled by Bensema, Maxwell and Stone, and WVU prior to the extensive research conducted by the National bureau of Standards (NBS). These initial measurements indicated a 20- to 30-dB lower noise level than that measured recently by N BS. The recent NBS data is that used by Collins in the final predictions.

Underground heat issues are mainly focused on the detrimental effects to a workers health. However, working in hot, humid conditions has other negative effects. Studies have shown that safety, productivity, workforce morale and operating cost are also worsened in these conditions. The human body has several mechanisms for rejecting heat and remaining cool. However, once the air temperature exceeds about 34°C, the only effective mechanism is by evaporation of sweat from the skin. This is assisted by acclimatisation which is the human body?s enhanced ability to combat extended exposure to heat. The body has to remain well hydrated when working in heat as even small degrees of dehydration cause significant decreases in the ability to work in heat. There are two ways in which heat load can be reduced: Through use of refrigeration/vent/cooling to reduce thermal stress on workers; Reduce the contribution that heat sources have to underground heat load (e.g. reduce idle time, fleet size, etc). Some of the sources of underground heat have the potential to be more manageable than others. Geothermal heat and heat from autocompression will be found in all mining situations in varying degrees depending on geothermal gradient and surface temperature, however, the use of equipment and blasting may be streamlined to reduce the underground heat load. It is through a combination of the available options that most mines will successfully control their heat related problems. Mt Isa, which has been a focus for heat related study in Australia, has successfully implemented protocols for working in heat. Through combining these with the installation of a surface bulk air cooling plant, Mt Isa has consistently reduced the incidence of heat illness. This is likely to be the most cost effective method of reducing heat load for deep mines in Australia. Shallower mines which may only occasionally encounter hot conditions should consider more portable cooling options. This study will review the heat issues in underground Australian metalliferous mines.

"There is a number of comminution tests commonly used in the mining industry. Many of the tests are used for a particular grinding model or mill sizing program and are incompatible with other tests of different models. This paper provides an overview of the commonly used grinding and crushing tests, which models (or practitioners) use a particular combination of tests and draws some relationships between the incompatible tests based on the DJB Consultants Inc. database of projects.Case studies will demonstrate similarities and differences between major mining districts with some comments about homogeneous and heterogeneous behaviour within the grindability results.INTRODUCTIONThere are a number of bench-scale grindability tests in use for sizing and predicting throughput for grinding circuits. Part of the reason for this variety is there are a number of different grinding models in use in the Industry, and those models operate using incompatible test results as input (Doll and Barratt, 2008).By using the database of testwork in the DJB Consultants, Inc. (DJB) Millpower 2000 database (see Table 1), some of the more commonly used tests are compared and relationships will be drawn."

During 1986, the Government continued with efforts to ease the country's almost total reliance on coffee exports for trade revenues by allocating 45% of the Government's budget to commerce and industrial projects. The collapse in coffee prices in 1985 continued to exacerbate the country's growing trade deficit, weakened currency, and dwindling reserves of foreign exchange in 1986. Amoco Burundi Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Amoco International Oil Co., continued with plans to drill at least two exploration wells in Lake Tanganyika in 1987. Both offshore and onshore drilling exploration was planned by Amoco Burundi. Any oil or gas finds were expected to have substantial impact on the Burundian economy, as a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports.

"The Bureau of Mines recently has issued a general information circular covering briefly the origin and occurrence, properties, uses, exploitation, and marketing of diatomite. Since this publication was prepared, additional information has become available regarding one of the newer uses of diatomite — that as a filler in battery boxes. As this market is rapidly becoming one of the important outlets, a brief discussion of such use may be of interest.Diatomite is a mineral substance composed principally of the skeletal remains of diatoms. The skeletons of these microscopic flowerless water plants are made from silica present in the water in which these tiny plants live. The minute shells or ""casts"" accumu¬late in the bottom of lakes, ponds, or inland seas, and eventually become more or less consolidated into beds of diatomite.The uses of diatomite depend largely upon its peculiar properties. Diatomite is a highly porous substance and possesses marked absorptive powers. The large percentage of pore space makes the material very light in weight. It is relatively insoluble in most solutions.The largest deposits in the world are found in California, but diatomite occurs in many other Western States and also is found in a number of places along the Atlantic seaboard. Outside of the United States diatomite occurs in many countries; Algeria and Germany are among the largest producers.Usually diatomite is mined either by underground or open—cut methods. In some instances it may be dredged from lake and swamp bottoms. It must be dried prior to grinding or other preparation for market, and for many purposes must undergo a complex sizing and grading system for removal of such impurities as sand and clay and for classification of the material to the various sizes desired,"

Blast vibration analysis under relatively near-field conditions has been carried out in a narrow-vein underground operation. The objective was to characterize the vibration signal (particle acceleration and velocity) from carefully controlled stope blasts. The limitations of such analysis in deriving design guidelines for reducing dilution has been elucidated. It has been shown that identification of each individual hole with specific explosive types can yield explosive-specific predictive equations for particle velocity. This has been coupled with measurement of actual overbreak to arrive at a limiting vibration level to generate a realistic design tool for controlling dilution in narrow-vein mines.

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

The Resonant, or as it has more commonly come to be known the 'Sonic' Pile Driver, dates back to the early 1960's, when prototypes were produced by Charlie Guild, of Providence, Rhode Island, and A1 Bodine of Los Angeles, California, these were later to be developed into the unit known as the BRD 1000. Based on this initial work, the Shell Oil Companies of Sonico and The Resonant Pile Corporation, produced and operated 30 of these BRD 1000 machines, which were used throughout the U.S.A. and Canada on a wide range of foundation projects. Subsequent to this, Raymond International and G K N, of England, operated units on programs; the G K N units being of slightly modified configuration. In 1973 Hawker Siddeley Canada Ltd., acquired the license for the Pile Driver and related systems with the intent of promoting the use of the machines to install support pilings on the Alyaska Pipeline Project, but this did not materialize due to problems with the oscillator. After radical redesign and field testing of the oscillator system the unit was employed on a number of test projects principally in Northern Canada and Alaska.

The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.
