Evaluating the performance of a shielded tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be difficult because the ground cannot be observed directly and in relation to the TBM attitude within the excavation. It is difficult to determine whether performance problems are caused by ground loading, steering issues, fine muck packing against the shield, or migration of annular grout around the shield. The Arrowhead Tunnels Project in Southern California uses strain gauges on its shielded hard rock TBMs to detect shield strains early and correlate them with tunneling conditions, thereby increasing the chances that problems will be correctly diagnosed and addressed to optimize TBM performance. The frequent automatic measurement of shield strain has also been valuable by confirming whether remedial methods used to free the machine after stoppages are effective. This paper discusses the qualitative interpretation of characteristic strain patterns on the Arrowhead Tunnels TBM shields and discusses installation details and special considerations for setting up a strain measurement system.

Current practice for monitoring static pile load tests commonly consists of measuring load and displacement at the top of a pile. This is typically accomplished by monitoring dial gauge movements, line pressure of a hydraulic jacking system, and electronic load cells on occasion. While this testing approach provides useful information for one boundary condition (the top of the pile), a system that measures movement and/or strain along the entire length of the pile can provide additional useful data that can be used to refine pile design. Automated data acquisition systems provide the essential ingredient that can integrate these types of sophisticated instrumentation devices into a standard pile load test program in a cost effective way. This paper provides a general overview of pile testing instrumentation and describes a newly developed chain of instrumentation modules that can be embedded in a pile to gather additional testing information. The new system can measure forces and movements within the test pile synchronously with measurements at the pile top, and the direct application of this system to axial and lateral pile testing is illustrated. This is particularly relevant to the design of ACIP and drilled displacement piles since determination of the reinforcement cage length is important from the standpoint of both seismic design and foundation cost.

Introduction Rock bolting is a general term that encompasses pinning, roof bolting, rib bolting, and cable bolting. Rock bolting contributes the highest nonproductive cost and is the most significant safety risk in mining today. Total installed bolt costs are now more than $20 per bolt. Rebolting or repair work doubles this. And bolting accidents account for about 30% of all fatal and nonfatal lost time accidents. It is only logical, then, for the mine operator to install the highest quality anchors possible. Every bolt on the market - tensioned, untensioned, full contact, or point anchor - has designed capabilities in axial, shear, and fluctuating ground conditions. Bolts will provide a designed support if material specifications and installation procedures fall within the manufacturer's recommendations. This also assumes that there are no unexpected geological or operational changes. Proper material specifications and installation procedures should guarantee the mine operator a quality anchor. To help assure this, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the AMC Manufacturers group developed stringent ASTM materials standards. These govern mechanical point anchor bolts and bolts using threaded and nonthreaded rebar. There are also minimum standards that suppliers must comply with in the manufacture of frictional bolts. However, most frictional bolt standards are based on the manufacturer's own specifications. It would be impossible to set uniform regulations on frictional bolts. Each bolt provides support in a slightly different manner and thereby requires different material needs. Quality Control In any case, material quality can generally be assured through tight order specifications and periodic quality control checks. The problem with installing quality anchors does not solely lie with the material. It includes all the events that occur from the time a bolt leaves a manufacturer to the time it is installed. The anchoring ability of any major type bolt can be affected by transportation, storage, mechanical performance of installation equipment, installation demands of the operator, proper drilling accessories, and local geology. Table 1 and Fig. 1 document the negative events that can affect each bolt and the degree to which it can be affected. Drilling a hole of oversized diameter, for example, is an operator controlled factor. It will adversely affect most bolts. An over-sized diameter reduces, or even eliminates, the anchorage capability of a mechanical shell. It will reduce the support capacity of a split set to nearly nothing. And it will cause a partial or incomplete grouting around the resin bolt. Frequently, due to bit wear, holes are drilled undersized in diameter and may not be properly cleaned out. In this case, it will be difficult for the operator to push the mechanical shell into the hole, thereby causing him to drill another hole. In cases where the bolt is obviously not providing anchorage, operators will probably drill another hole and place another bolt. Rock Bolt Regulations It is the situations where a bolt is improperly installed in the hole, but gives the appearance of a good bolt, that are frightening. In fact, some safety officials and engineers believe that only 50% to 60% of installed bolts are working. These bolts cause irregular ground load transfers in other bolts and overload them. This causes hazardous situations and overstressing. It is these bolts that fail prematurely 200 to 255 mm (8 to 10 in.) behind the face and possibly contribute to the high accident rate. The 1990s brought an unprecedented increase in the development of innovative technologies to provide more effective and easier-to-install roof support in underground mines. To facilitate the application of these technologies in improving mine safety, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP). STOP is a Windows-based software program that provides mine operators with a simple and practical tool to make engineering decisions about the selection and placement of these various roof support technologies. The program includes a complete database of the support characteristics and loading profiles obtained through safety performance testing of these supports at the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory. A support design criterion in the form of the required support load density at a specified convergence can be established from four options: (1) a database of measured ground reaction obtained from various mines or ground behavior information input by the user,(2) load requirements based on a detached roof block or rock failure height, (3) criteria based on the current roof support system, and/or (4) arbitrary criteria set by the user. Using these design criteria, the program will determine the installation requirements for a particular support technology that will provide the necessary support load density and convergence control. Optimization routines are also available to determine the most efficient support design for a user-specified support installation. In addition to these performance measures, STOP can be used to compare material handling requirements and installation costs. Comparisons among the various support technologies are easily made, including a graphical analysis of relevant support parameters. This paper describes STOP and its application to optimizing standing secondary roof support systems.

For decades, traditional hydraulic engineering approaches have been used for sizing stream channels when stream relocation efforts have been necessary to allow for the advancement of quarry and other surface mining operations. These approaches have been based on various ydraulic models to design channel cross sections and slopes that could pass the required regulatory design storm such as the 2-, 5, lo-, 25-, 50-, or even loo-year events. Designing the stream channel to handle these more extreme ,storm events would often lead to large channel designs which required extensive bank and channel bottom stabilization techniques including concrete, rip rap, gabions, or other expensive approaches. The constructed channels often required ongoing maintenance to remove accumulated sediment and other debris which would settle out and reduce the hydraulic capacity of the channel.

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, to stimulate greater interest in safety in the mineral-extractive industries and to encourage the development of more effective accident-prevention programs. Since its beginning in 1925, thirty-four safety contests have been conducted. This publication reports results of the 11 annual contests for the period 1948-1958, inclusive. Mineral operations awarded the "Sentinels of Safety" trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group as well as those ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth are listed along with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling injuries. In addition, this publication contains statistical information reflecting the disabling work-injury experience of all other mines and quarries enrolled in the annual contests. The injury statistics of these operations are arranged in the six groups of the competition and through 1955 are the only data on injury-severity at noncoal mineral operations published by the Bureau of Hines. Recognition of the National Safety Competition in promoting safety has increased steadily during its 34 years. The number of plants participating in these annual competitions increased from 210 in 1925, its first year, to a record of 675 in 1958. The expanding scope of the National Safety Competition indicates that more mines and quarries in the United States are enrolling 90 all available means to promote safety on the job will be used. Safety contests like this are generally recognized, in the field of safety promotion, as an effective way to arouse and hold the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention programs. They tend to forge individual precautionary acts into group action centered on a common objective, such as winning the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy.

"This paper summarizes a comprehensive energy and cost study comparing an existing SAG mill based circuit at Huckleberry Mine with two proposed circuits involving comminution technologies which are associated with energy efficiency: high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and high speed stirred mills. The specific energy requirements expressed as kWh/t for the proposed circuits were determined from pilotscale HPGR and stirred mill testing conducted at the University of British Columbia. Samples and operating data were collected from Huckleberry’s copper-molybdenum concentrator to evaluate current mill performance for comparison. To support the base case, the SABC circuit was modeled using JK SimMet® software. The main comparison focused on the complete energy requirements for each circuit, including materials handling equipment such as conveyors, screens, feeders and pumps. This paper also provides capital and operating cost estimates for each of the comminution circuits. The results showed that the HPGR - ball mill circuit achieved a 21% reduction in energy consumption over the existing SAG - ball mill circuit at the same P80 grind size of 160 µm. At a grind of 80% passing 75 µm, the HPGR - stirred mill circuit showed a 34% reduction in energy compared to the base case. It was concluded that the energy reduction for the new flowsheets significantly improved the economics of the Huckleberry comminution duty.INTRODUCTIONUp until now, tumbling mills such as AG/SAG mills and ball mills have had a dominant bearing on the design and economics of comminution circuits. However, it is commonly agreed that the majority of employed comminution processes are energy intensive and energy inefficient, accounting for up to 80% of overall process plant energy consumption and having an efficiency of as low as 1% (Abouzeid and Fuerstenau, 2009; Fuerstenau and Abouzeid, 2002). The U.S. department of energy reported that there is a potential to reduce energy consumption in the metals industry by up to 61% from current practice to bestestimated practical minimum energy consumption; suggestions included the implementation of best practices and the adoption of energy efficient mining and mineral processing technologies such as advanced blasting techniques, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) and stirred mills (U.S. DOE, 2007)."

The wetting of coal dust by aqueous solutions of surface active agents (surfactants) has been studied. Selected for study were thirty coals and typical surfactants selected from the typical classes of anionic, non ionic and cationics. Of these three classes the practical use of cationics in aqueous solutions has been eliminated due to the inherent negative Zeta potential charge of the representative coals studied. The wetting of the coals has been examined by column flow, contact angle, and settling rate measurements. Results indicated that both anionic and nonionic surfactants are to be considered viable for use; low critical micelle concentration values are also preferred for the surfactants. Study of native waters showed substantial variation in properties, i.e., pH, calcium ion concentration, and conductance. pH variations were also noted to affect the effectiveness of selected surfactants. Combinations of nonionic and anionic surfactants have, in certain instances, produced synergistic enhancement in the coal wetting superior to the effectiveness of each surfactant alone.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

Burning coal-mine refuse banks were surveyed in 15 States. The following characteristics were tabulated for 495 hanks: County; name, population, and distance of nearest town; size and status of bank; status and stage of fire; and topography. Ways of controlling fires were reviewed, the compacting and sealing method proving most satisfactory. Means for preventing refuse-bank fires by proper construction of banks are described.

This paper describes a key element in the construction of a major project undertaken by Harbourfront Corporation in its efforts to rejuvenate the central Toronto waterfront. The Spadina Pier forms one of the two major structures of the $10 million marina complex. Completed in early 1986, the 150 metre(490 ft.) long by 43 metre(140 ft.) wide pier structure will contain a 320 car parking garage as well as providing the foundation of a 17-story residential tower and a two-story retail/commercial complex. However, the pier structure posed a considerable challenge to its developers due to the the many restrictions imposed on the site by the environmental authorities which ruled out the construction of dykes or the placing of other fill materials on the highly contaminated bottom sediments. In addition, access at the site was restricted by its proximity to the main harbour navigation channel and a grain elevator berth. The original design called for a cofferdam to form an integral part of the finished structure. However, the contractor chose to regard the cofferdam as a temporary structure and proposed to construct the pier in the dry by enclosing the 10,000 square metre(107,600 sf) site with a 450 metre(1480 ft.) long single wall steel sheet pile cofferdom 7.5 metres(25 ft.) from the final pier structure. This paper will describes the design and construction of the cofferdam. Prior to finalizing the pier design, a geotechnical investigation of the shale bedrock was undertaken as well as a small sheet pile test cell program to evaluate the feasibility of driving a Canadian manufactured cold-rolled sheet pile into the bedrock. Relying on the design parameters for the shale bedrock, Foundation designed the cofferdam utilizing a post-tensioned bipod bracing system to resist a 7 metre(23 ft.) hydrostatic head as well as the maximum wind and wave forces expected at the site. The bipod bracing system consists of diagonal H-pile raker piles and verticle pipe piles anchored to bedrock with post-tensioned anchors grouted into bedrock.

The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. Brooklyn Basin Project is a multi-billion-dollar development of the former Port of Oakland 9th Avenue Terminal located along the Oakland Estuary of California. A centerpiece of the development is the 10-acre shoreline park which will be built on a 1,200 ft long by 225 ft wide historic wharf. The wharf was built in the 1930’s on concrete and timber piles with a flat concrete slab. Prior to constructing the wharf, a rock dike was placed to protect the shoreline. The presence of the rock dike increased the hazards from lateral spreading of the underlying bay mud and non-ductile shear failure of piles driven through the dike. To open the park to the public, the wharf required a seismic retrofit in compliance with the California Building Code. The paper presents the results and conclusions of the following topics: • Structural condition assessment and repair strategies for the existing wharf deck, piles and jackets • Application of the California Building Code (CBC Ch31F) for the performance-based seismic evaluation of existing piers and wharves • Nonlinear pushover analysis of the wharf including the combination of inertial and kinematic effects • Impact of rock dike on lateral spreading and kinematic effects and the significance of existing piles in stabilizing the lateral spreading of the rock dike • Retrofit strategies for the wharf to meet the required seismic performance requirements per the California Building Code and reduce the demands on existing piles which were driven through the rock dike INTRODUCTION The 65-acre Brooklyn Basin Development project is located in Oakland, California. The project consists of 3,100 housing units, 200,000 sq. ft of retail and commercial space, along with various parks and public access improvements along the Oakland Estuary. A centerpiece of the development is the 10-acre Shoreline Park which will be built on a 1,200 ft long by 225 ft wide historic wharf. The wharf was built in the 1930’s on concrete and timber piles with a flat concrete slab. As shown in Figure 1, the wharf deck and piles support the 9th Avenue Terminal Building.

This report presents the results of a search for viable-self-drilling roof bolt concepts, detailed development, design, and manufacture of such bolts that drill their own holes, and testing in the laboratory and in the field in two different coal mines of three self-drilling roof bolts. Three new types of bolts were designed and tested, which drill their own holes and then anchor in continuous operation. These were a spring-actuated mechanical expansion shell, a slot and wedge, and a self-contained resin anchor bolt. Such bolts when fully developed for mine use would allow safer and remote installation of ground support and increase productivity. Recommendations are given for further work to improve drilling and anchorage performance.

The formation and distribution of gold placers in active collisional mountain belts are directly related to the tectonic, topographic, climatic and erosional constraints prevailing on either side of the orogen at the time of placer formation. In the absence of pre-existing placer deposits, these factors combine to concentrate placer development on the side of the orogen facing the prevailing winds, where most of the erosion and uplift occurs. Drainage network changes and glaciation can significantly alter placer distribution with respect to source areas within the orogen. After collision stops, placer formation will proceed on both sides of the orogen as exhumation of the mountain belt ensues. Incorporation of pre-existing placers formed on ancient mountain belts into younger placers in subsequent orogens, may be recognised by anomalous placer distribution compared to the above model. Most of the relatively young giant placers such as those inNew Zealand, Chile, Bolivia and Columbia, exhibit these general patterns. Their character and mode of formation have important implications for the formation and distribution of much older placers, such as those in South Africa's Witwatersrand Basin.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. New ZealandÆs share of global greenhouse gas emissions, at about one fifth of one per cent, is very small. But the profile of those emissions is unique among OECD countries; more than half come from methane and nitrous oxide associated with livestock agriculture. Consequently, fulfilling its obligations under the Kyoto Protocol is potentially quite onerous for New Zealand.In this paper we use a single region, static general equilibrium model to assess the implications for New Zealand of various climate change policy options. The energy and agriculture sectors are modeled in a detailed manner to enable realistic simulations to be carried out.Choosing an optimal set of policies is made more difficult by the fact that New Zealand relies heavily on emission intensive sectors for much of its export earnings. For example, one emission intensive sector alone, dairy, accounts for over 20 per cent of all merchandise exports. Avoiding carbon leakage is therefore an important consideration in selecting appropriate greenhouse policies.Our analysis shows the degree of sectoral adjustment required is substantial. In addition, the total costs depend on the uncertain level of variables such as the global carbon price and the level of afforestation activities in New Zealand, ie the rate of new forest planting.
