To determine the effect of flux crystal size on the production rate and strength of sinter, batch sintering tests were conducted on samples of both dolomite and limestone of various crystal sizes. In addition, calcination tests .were performed on the dolomite and Limestone to determine the effect of crystal size on calcination rate at various temperatures normally attained in sinter beds. The results indicate that flux crystal size does not affect sinter production rate or sinter strength.

North River Energy Company a previous subsidiary of Republic Steel Corporation commenced development of the Number One Mine in mid-1972. The mine is located in West Alabama and presently employs a total of 632 people. Production capabilities have increased to 1.4 million clean tons of steam coal per year with the newly purchased Longwall System. Washer recovery averages 57 percent. The seam being mined is the Pratt or Corona with an average height of 52 inches and an average cover of 540 feet. The immediate roof is laminated sandstone and the floor is composed of a hard fireclay. Total production out of the mine is provided to Alabama Power Company under a longtime contract.

"MOTIVATION The storage of nuclear waste gives rise to a lot of innovative issues for underground space technologies. The nuclear activity of waste generates temperature effects on both the lining and the surrounding rock mass. In order to avoid these unfavorable effects, the number of waste containers is controlled in the gallery section. The galleries section has consequently ranged from a diameter of 4 to 6 meters. However, in the case of intermediate-level nuclear waste, due to the lower temperature, the number of containers in a cross section of a gallery is assumed to be safely increased. Despite technical difficulties, a large diameter gallery (typically 12m excavated) seems to be more cost effective. This paper demonstrate the feasibility of such a gallery in the specific context of CIGEO (French Geological Repository Project for nuclear waste), located in the Bure area in the north-eastern of France. The geology of Bure at the project’s depth (about 520 meters) consists in a quite homogeneous layer of Callovo-Oxfordian argillites (COx argillites). With such an overburden, this rock is known to have a high plastic behavior with significant time-dependent effects. These mechanical properties require complex behavior laws in computational modeling used for the design of underground facilities.EXPERIENCE OF LARGE DIAMETER GALLERIES In order to identify some specificities in the design of such openings, a research has been run on existing galleries of large diameter (more than 10 meters), like the tunnel of Chamoise, Lötschberg, Tartaiguille or Saint-Martin-La-Porte. Two of these representative examples are detailed hereafter. Tunnel of Chamoise (French Jura) In spite of a lighter overburden (400m versus 520m), an anisotropic initial stress state and a variable rate of carbonates, the highway tunnel of Chamoise is quite similar to the planned gallery for intermediate-level nuclear waste, with a geology very close to the CIGEO’s one in some sections. Because the northern tube encountered difficulties during the excavation a few years before (several over-excavations and spalling, especially in the bench), the excavation of the southern tube has been carried out in two steps, but with a high bench and a small curved invert (Figure 1). The design of the immediate support consists in long bolts and a shotcrete layer. The concrete lining is about 50cm thick."

A laboratory fixed bed reactor was used in a study of generating clean thermal energy from coal fine refuse-limestone agglomerates. The major operation variables, including Ca/S mole ratio, agglomerate size, air flow rate and temperature, which affect the rate of sulfur fixation and combustible material utilization, have been examined. The test results show that 70 percent or more of sulfur fixation and 100% of combustible material utilization can be achieved depending upon sorbent, agglomeration, and combustion conditions. The coal fine refuse limestone pellet combustion process (CLC process) requires a simple flowsheet to convert coal fine refuse as a clean solid fuel, while meeting the strict air quality standards for SO2 emissions into the atmosphere. The CLC process is an attractive method to clean up coal slurry impoundments to protect our environment.

J.B. Gwiazda's article deals with an interesting problem that has not been studied thoroughly up to now. Gwiazda has proposed a technical solution that eliminates horizontal load imposed by the supports on the roof. That load is due to a discrepancy between the trajectories of the canopy and the overlying strata. It is true that the improved lemniscate guidance system proposed by Gwiazda could eliminate the horizontal load but, on the other hand, it would represent a higher cost of the supports, and it would complicate the already complicated mechanism of powered supports. That is why we must be convinced that the proposed improvement is actually needed. From that point of view, the following questions should be elucidated. As shown in Fig. 1, the point O travels along the curve a, which produces horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the coal face. As stated by Gwiazda, "such a high load is capable of destroying the roof above the support, causing rock debris to be scattered around the face." The results of our measurements carried out in coal mines of the Czechoslovak part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin show that the convergence in the modern type of powered supports does not exceed several millimeters (not more than 10) per hour. Similar conclusions were drawn from field measurements performed in the Polish part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (see S. Romanowicz and H. Szopka in Proceedings, Scientific and Technical Symposium Simmex '85, Katowice, Poland, pp. 73 -83). The small vertical closure of the supports also induces a small horizontal displacement of the canopy. In addition to this, the transmission of forces between the roof and the canopy is influenced by the layer of debris on it, i.e., the canopy slides without imposing a greater horizontal load on the roof. This was deduced from field measurements of Voest-Alpine F 4/4600 powered supports equipped with rams instead of the common front lemniscate links (denoted as 1 in Fig. 5). In these supports, the pressurizing of the space of piston rod (la in Fig. 5) causes the rams to close, which induces horizontal load on the roof in a direction toward the coal face. After the setting of a support unit, the pressure in the piston rod space was found to drop, frequently to zero, because the small horizontal sliding between the canopy and the debris or inside the debris caused the horizontal reaction from the roof to fall to zero, although the debris were pressurized by vertical setting load. As a consequence, there was no horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof. A rise of the horizontal load was recorded only after the passage of the shearer and during lowering of the adjacent units. Thorough information on the results of the afore- mentioned field measurement is given in the paper, "Analysis of the performance of shield powered supports installed in a thick seam," published in Mechanizacja i automatyzacja gornictwa, 1982, No. 12, pp. 38-46. An English translation of the paper is available from the author. We have deduced from our observations that horizontal load imposed by the canopy on the roof in the direction toward the coal face is useful for roof control because it limits the displacement of the immediate roof toward the gob particularly during the rise working. We came to the conclusion that horizontal load on the roof toward the coal face should be induced on purpose. Could Mr. Gwiazda prove with the results of field measurements his contrary opinion? Has the small horizontal displacement of the canopy toward the face actually had an adverse effect on the roof? As shown in Fig. 2, during the setting of a support unit, the canopy imposes a horizontal load on the roof in the direction of the gob. In this case, I share Gwiazda's opinion that the horizontal load could have an adverse effect on the roof. Nevertheless, two important circumstances were neglected - the horizontal compliance of the supports and the interaction of adjacent units. The question of the compliance was analyzed precisely by I. Krumnacker in Gluckauf -Forschungshefle, 1984, NO. 5, pp. 219-223. In the defunct Gorka quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha and containing approximately 1 million ton of high aluminium wastes and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water. The reservoir is fed with the filtrates arriving from the disposal site mentioned, at a rate ~130 m3/day. An alarming phenomenon is the subsidence of the pond bottom and the infiltration of solutions into the Triassic and Jurassic water resources, assessed at ~40 m3/ day. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Gorka pond is their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and variable pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides pumping out and treatment of about 500000m3 of effluents retained in the Gorka reservoir in an about yearly time. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant, according to a process so far verified on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product would be discharged into the Ropa stream. The brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl), whose amount may reach up to100000m3, might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. Similarly, there would be provided an intake of underflows of infiltrates (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches) arriving from the high aluminum site, and such effluents would be subject to ongoing dilution in water courses. It would be possible to test the system of underflows reaching the Gorka reservoir by means of geochemical identification, previously performed. The next stage following the pumping, would be the utilization of approx. 50 000m3 of bottom slurry. Highly alkaline slurries would be utilized in the production of self-solidifying mixtures. Slurries would be pumped out and temporarily dumped on drying beds, located nearby the Gorka reservoir, and later on used successively for making self-solidifying mixtures in a plant similar to a concrete making seat. Those mixtures would be applied for sealing the bottom of the Gorka reservoir and the necessary part of the edges of the defunct quarry. An alternative solution is the utilization of slurries in the facilities of the Trzebionka Mining Works and the application of self-solidifying mixtures, made in the Trzebionka Works, for sealing the reservoir bottom.

Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full scale field trials supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

The DART NC-1B Tunnel Project consists of two 5,100 m TBM excavated tunnels, a principal underground station, a partially completed future station, a surface station, and eight associated ventilation shafts and exit tunnels. This paper presents a case history of the project's construction, and will focus on six topics that give this project a unique and unusual history; the TBM excavation, two major differing site conditions, roadheader excavation, polyfiber reinforced shotcrete lining, the NATM design geometry, and a design/build type of contract.

Production In 1993, it was estimated that United States mine production of barite increased 24%. Barite consumption, either sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 39% and imports increased 4%, according to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 80% of the total, followed by Georgia. It is estimated that 83% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 17% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Prices The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 1%, according to the USBM. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1993 decreased from $40.09/t ($36.37/st) in 1992 to $37.72/t ($34.22/st). Uses Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals, fillers in paper, plastics, brake shoes and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1993. The average number of rotary rigs operating in the United States was 754, 5% greater than the 1992 average of 717. Imports Crude barite imports in 1993 were 443 kt (488,000 st) greater than 1992, representing an increase of 137%. Imports accounted for 67% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States.

The Red Dog zinc-lead deposit, said to be the world's second largest, is located inside the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska - a location too harsh and remote for some mining companies but just right for Cominco Ltd. The complex has been in operation since November 1989 and is producing 508 kt/a (560,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate, 109 kt/a (120,000 stpy) of leadconcentrate and 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of an Imperial Smelter Feed, a combined zinc-lead mixture that is too small to separate. All of this concentrate production derives from a relatively modest mine production of 5.4 kt/ad (6000 stpd) extracted from a surface pit. Despite being a high-grade zinc-lead deposit, Red Dog's metallurgy is complex, requiring a very fine grind and use of column cells for flotation. The Red Dog complex is located in the DeLong Mountains. They are characterized by eight stack and folded thrust blocks that contain sedimentary and igneous rocks. The Red Dog deposit is located in the second lowest thrust and ist hosted by late Mississippian to Permian age black shale, the Ikalukrok member of the Kuna formation. The Red Dog mining complex is operated by Cominco Alaska, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, Inc, which, in turn, is owned by Cominco Ltd. In 1980, the deposit region was acquired by NANA Corp. as part of the Native American Claims Act Settlement of 1971. NANA is one of 12 such Native Corporations in Alaska. In 1982, NANA and Cominco American signed a develop¬ment agreement and formed Cominco Alaska to manage the project.

The Yindaruqin Irrigation Project is designed to irrigate 57,000 ha of land in the central part of Gansu Province of People's Republic of China. Water for the Project will be diverted through an 87 Km long feeder canal which will convey 36 cubic meters per second from an intake on the Datong River. (Fig. 1) The feeder canal consists of approximately 10 Km of open channels, 75 Km of tunnels and 2 Km of siphons and aqueducts. This is the biggest self-flowing irrigation water control project in the Northwest of China and it is among the most interesting projects in China for the geological and environmental conditions. Nearly half of the investment in the Project is a World Bank Loan and contractors were chosen by means of international bidding. The Italian Company, CMC Ravenna, succeeded in answering the bidding for the construction of tunnels 30A and 38, perhaps the most difficult in the Project, submitting a TBM alternative to the conforming drill and blast contract recommendation.

In the post-World War II years, metals analysts and statisticians have tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) industrial production (IP) growth rates, Williamson said. This was because the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. "However, the correlation was exaggerated," he said. During times of expanding IP growth, metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked to reduce costs. Nonetheless, he said, a reasonable correlation could be painted between IP growth over the longer term and metal demand. "Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war, it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, lately including Japan," Williamson said. The so-called "developing world" had been of little consequence. The Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities that, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers, he said. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated, Williamson said. It does not take into account the worldwide political changes that have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China. "It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs," he said, including the western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are attempting to satisfy the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people, Williamson said. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America, have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. "Now, with free market forces at work, their aspirations will start to be met." Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate. The production of raw materials has to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world. It will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries.

The number of stakeholders concerned by mining companies has grown significantly over the last few decades, and the role of local communities and civil society is now acknowledged by the mining companies adhering to the sustainable development ethics. ?Involve me? is becoming a key to maximize the returns the mining industry can provide to sustainable development. As the world?s major importer of many mineral commodities, several coming from developing countries facing severe short-term problems, the European Union (EU) is an important stakeholder and has a responsibility in supporting actions to strengthen corporate and public governance capacities. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the drivers leading to the development of sustainability indicators and to propose, within the 6th European Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (FP6), an European-level initiative to develop sustainability indicators adapted to the mining industry and its population with relevant data.

The use of ground-probing radar as a reflection mapping tool has expanded greatly in the last few years. This tool can now be used to produce near surface information which is very useful to geotechnical engineers. Using the lightweight field equipment now available, it is possible to use the radar within mines and tunnels to obtain information which may impact the safety and production of these operations.

The Pioche District of Lincoln County in southeastern Nevada (Figures 1 and 2) has been an historically important producer of silver, zinc, and lead. Economic geology of districts in the Pioche area is summarized most adequately in recent reports by Tschanz and Pampeyan (1) and Gemmill (2) and only a few major aspects will be discussed here. Production in the Pioche District began in 1869 and early mining concentrated on silver-bearing fissures in lower Cambrian quartzites. In the early 1870's the Pioche District was second only to the Comstock Lode in world silver production (3). More recent mining activities have centered on the other major ore type in the area, bedded replacement of lower Cambrian carbonates by Ag-Zn-Pb sulfide ore. Production of replacement ore peaked around 1950. The present study is focused on the Pan American Mine because it is an excellent example of low grade carbonate replacement deposits, because there is little structural dismemberment, and because access was readily available. Most previous workers have suggested that both the fissure vein deposits and the bedded replacement deposits of the Pioche districts are a result of spatially related Laramide igneous activity. The purpose of this study is to determine whether ore genesis is a result of igneous activity or if mineralization might be related to late diagenetic processes such as formed Mississippi Valley "type" deposits. Stable isotopes of sulfur, carbon, and oxygen in ore and gangue minerals have been studied to determine the probable isotopic composition of the ore fluid and paleomagnetic studies of the carbonate rocks have been utilized to determine timing of mineralization. Additionally, petrographic and field studies of carbonate lithologies were undertaken in an attempt to delineate non-structural controls on ore localization. These studies are still proceeding and the results presented herein are, therefore, preliminary in nature.

INTRODUCTION The Endako deposit was first explored in 1926, but development waited until the early nineteen sixties. It first came under the control of Placer Development in 1963, and early in 1964 a decision to bring it into production was reached. The deposit is located near the geographic center of British Columbia, and is served by an east-west communication system including a paved highway, mainline railway and good telephone, teletype, and computer facilities. The plant area is shown in Figure 1. The operation is known as the Endako Mines Division of Canex Placer Limited of Vancouver. First production was achieved in June, 1965, at a nominal rate of 10,000 tons per day, but it soon was closer to 15,000 tons per day. In 1967, two new grinding and flotation sections brought capacity to the present rate of approximately 27,000 tons per day. With mill heads of around 0.15 percent MoS2, production is about 14,000,000 pounds of molybdenum per year. A flowsheet of the operation is given in Figure 2. A legend for this flowsheet is given in Table 1. Published ore reserves are estimated at 214,500,000 tons at an average grade of 0.143 percent MoS2. PRIMARY CRUSHING The 85 or 100-ton haulage trucks dump over a grizzly into a 42 inch x 65 inch C.A.C. (Canadian Allis Chalmers) gyratory crusher.

Although lithium was first discovered by Arfwedson in Sweden in 1817, it did not reach any significant status in commercial application until 1908 when Thomas A. Edison received a patent covering the use of lithium hydroxide in alkaline' storage batteries. Edison's achievement can be regarded as a major breakthrough in the development of the lithium industry. In the years prior to 1908 lithium salts had found only modest applications in the pharmaceutical and pyrotechnic fields. The next important milestone in the growth of this net industry occurred in Germany in 1918 when Metallgesellschaft at its metallurgical laboratory at Frankfort-on-Main discovered that the addition of a few hundredths percent of lithium metal to aluminum and its alloys increased-the hardness. This brought into being a new commercial use of lithium in the manufacture of bearing metals. The new material, called "Bahnmetall" (railroad, metal), was widely used for, many years in the manufacture of bearings for railroad and automotive purposes. Its use continued until the early 1930's and there was a short-lived renewal of its production during World War II. Subsequent use of-the alloy was soon outmoded.

Surface mining consists of the removal of the geologic strata overlying the coal seam usually with large electric shovels, draglines or bucket wheels. The method produces more or less parallel ridges or peaks of cast overburden, usually called "spoil banks". The mined lands vary widely in their inherent characteristics to produce a vegetative cover and thus can be put to a wide variety of uses. Use is the key to economic and social benefits. Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Soil Material of Surface Mined Lands after surface mining operations, the soil material is a heterogeneous mass whose physical and chemical properties are dominated by the character of the geologic strata overlying the coal. These strata are highly variable in thickness and character. They may include the surface soil, loess, glacial till, sands, shales, slates, limestone and sandstone rock. The method of mining with the several types of mining equipment will also affect the resultant mined area.

The characteristics of mine airstreams, such as their magnitude in the time and frequency domain and their spatial distribution, as defined by isovels, must be considered when making a measurement. The possibility for erroneous measurements is greatly increased when fixed- point sensors for mine monitoring systems are used. However, an a priori understanding of the airstream characteristics can be used to reduce the possibility of erroneous readings. This paper describes the problem, presents data to illustrate the nature of the problem, and provides recommendations for alleviating the problem.
