The meaning of the title, "Blank Piece of Paper," refers to the need for management to take a completely fresh viewpoint to the problems facing our industry. These problems are so severe and some so new that conventional thinking may not be adequate to resolve them. Innovation has to be a part of every company's approach to the solutions, our concept is to start with a "Blank Piece of Paper.' The objective of 'this paper is to outline steps which can be taken to improve the profitability of a mining business. This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. This philosophy is based on our actual, hands-on experience in major open pit operations worldwide over the past 25 years.

Sintering of iron ore has undergone a dramatic development world-wide. Today, the annual world production amounts to approximately 600 million tons. At present, the sintering process in competition with pelletizing, seems to offer certain advantages inasmuch as it allows the use of solid fuels. Also, its charging behaviour in the blast furnace is, in general, considered as being better than that of pellets. This is true, in particular, for the charging behaviour and the gas permeability in relation to the grain size. Moreover, instead of charging limestone into the blast furnace, for instance, the basic components which are necessary for the burden materials can generally be supplied in a simpler and more cost-effective way by using basic sinter instead of basic pellets. While in sintering, with basicity rising to the range of 1.6 to 1.8 CaO : SiO2, the capacity increases and the sinter quality shows improvements in most of its characteristics, the pro¬duction of basic pellets generally requires a higher fuel rate, when compared to acid pellets, while production capacity decreases and some of the quality characteristics deteriorate.

Laterite ore slurries exhibit Bingham plastic behavior and can be characterized by the magnitude of their yield point and Bingham viscosity. These two parameters are affected by ore composition, solids concentration, and temperature and are used to predict the pressure drop in pipelines and heat transfer coefficients in shell-and-tube heat exchangers. In cycloning of laterite slurries, the calculated cut size is corrected by factors obtained from the rheological parameters.

Throughout the 1960's and 1970's world trade grew rapidly, reaching a peak of USS1.8 trillion in 1980. Since then the world recession of the early 1980's shrunk trade to about US$1.6 trillion. The reduced cash flow to developing economies made it difficult to service their huge international debts, Nowadays lenders are reluctant to grant Third World countries additional credit. The shortage of export financing, plus trade barriers set up by developed countries, is further inhibiting international trade. Therefore, countries are turning to new and creative alternatives to financing imports of consumer as well as of investment goods. Non-cash transactions, including different forms of countertrade, are rapidly growing alternatives to traditional trade financing patterns. In 1983 about 30% of international trade, or close to US$600 bill ion, were presumably done by non-cash transactions, up from barely 2% in 1976. By year 2000, half the world trade is likely to be conducted on basis of barter. As of mid-1984 some 88 nations used countertrade regularly and Governments of at least 15 Latin American countries had arranged or mandated commercial countertrade.

This paper presents the results of a large scale trial of polycrystalline diamond picks (PDC) on longwalls with particular reference to dust control. Results from fixed position monitoring showed that PDC picks produced less respirable dust than tungsten carbide Point Attack picks. Dust generation at the longwall face was lower by 39 - 43%. Field trials also indicated that the life of a PDC pick to be at least 1460 tonnes/pick.

In this paper, the problems which occurred on introduction of dense medium cyclone coal washing in Australia are reviewed together with the subsequent measures taken to obtain a satisfactory magnetite. Specification and testing of magnetite for exploration, quality control and in-plant check purposes is discussed. The disposition of Australian magnetite deposits in relation to the main coal producing areas is examined, and comments are made on the economics of mining, milling and beneficiating magnetite for coal preparation uses alone. Future trends in the Australian Coal Industry are predicted, and the need for a planned approach for the future is demons traced.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. The construction of a large span, high-walled underground opening in a low strength shale rock is unprecedented. The feasibility of constructing a pumped storage project with several tunnels and a large underground powerhouse in low strength shale rested largely on the feasibility of building stable openings large enough to accommodate the required equipment. Because of the lack of experience with large openings in shale, the decision was made to excavate a test adit and test chamber and conduct a multi-faceted geotechnical evaluation program designed to yield pertinent in-situ data on the ability of the shale to accommodate a large underground opening. Factors considered in the shape, size, orientation, and location of the test chamber were: (1) similarity to the anticipated powerhouse chamber, (2) nature of the most important data to be obtained, (3) feasibility of construction, and (4) economics.

During last years many different types of X-ray fluorescence analysers have appeared in the market most of these instruments being designed for laboratory use. The instruments applied ins continuous processes are usually modifications of these laboratory types. The application of these instruments to the analysis of heavier elements seems to be quite satisfactory. By lighter elements difficulties are caused by the strong absorption of the characteristic fluorescence radiation, which sometimes makes the use of vacuum or helium chambers necessary. In the following an instrument of another type will be described. It has been developed exclusively for the analysis of titanium in ilmenite concentrate, where the content of Ti02 varies between 43 - 46%. Preliminary measurements have shown that in this interval absolute change of 1% in the Ti02 concentration causes a relative change of about 2% in the intensity. Because: the accuracy of 0.5 % Ti02 is sufficient, 1% relative accuracy should be, attained in intensity measurement. The problem is not very easy to solve due to the fact that Ti K radiation is rather soft and the requirement's for accuracy are rather high. Being applied to the analysis during a continuous process may statistically fluctuating variables in connection of sampling and disturbances of many kind set special requirements for the instrument design.

This article could be entitled "The Rediscovery of the Windfall Mine," since it was originally discovered early in this century. The "Rediscovery" was made by personnel of Idaho Mining Corp. during the course of an investigation of the Windfall mine beginning in 1967. There had been historic production from the Windfall mine sporadically from 1908 until 1951 and there was present during much of this time a mill that vat leached crushed ore. Mining was underground to a depth of 91 m (300 ft). Prior to Idaho's activities, the mine had been inactive since the early 1950s. Idaho Mining Corp. was an "exploration company," privately owned and based in Reno, NV. The writer was at that time manager of exploration for Idaho Mining. The company held interests in the Cortez Gold mine, then being readied for production, and had conducted exploration for various mineral commodities in Nevada for several years. Idaho's attention was first directed to the Windfall mine in the Eureka District, Eureka County, Nevada (see Fig. 1, Nevada map) by a search of published geologic literature of the state of Nevada. An attempt was made to acquire a library consisting of all of the published geo-data for the state of Nevada as well as to obtain as much of the unpublished material as could be acquired. A study of these data, and in particular Tom Nolan's Professional Paper 406 (1962), indicated that the Windfall mine was anomalous for the Eureka District in that it contained deposits of disseminated gold. This source and other sources indicated that the Windfall had produced from underground operations approximately 59 kt (65,000 tons) grading 12.6 g/t (0.368 oz per ton) gold ore that was processed in a vat leaching operation and that the gold was "invisible" to the naked eye and could not be panned. It was ascertained that there were no active operations near the mine and a geologic reconnaissance was made and a few samples were taken to attempt to determine if the mineralization was indeed disseminated. The initial group of samples around the mine area averaged 1.25 ppm [11.5 g/t gold (0.036 oz per ton)] and the mineralization did appear to disseminate into the wallrock. The next step involved researching the ownership of property in the immediate area of the mine, and [ ] a property map was constructed that showed six or seven different ownerships of patented and unpatented claims, as well as some open ground, in the target area. Newmont Mining Corporation started as one man's investment vehicle. William Boyce Thompson, Newmont's founder, was already a millionaire many times when he incorporated his existing Newmont company in Delaware in 1921. The initial stake in the company was $8 million in capital contributed by Thompson and several close associates. In its infancy the company was truly a holding company. It did not operate or manage any properties. This situation changed drastically over time. By 1939 Newmont was actively mining 12 gold mines in North America. The following year, the first copper mine that Newmont ever managed directly, came into full production in South Africa. The period after World War I1 was a glorious one for Newmont. Plato Malozemoff took the helm of the company, and expanded its operations over the next 30 years into copper in Arizona, oil and gas in the U.S. and the North Sea, into domestic coal and thankfully, into significant gold operations.

Seismic surveys utilizing the MD-1 have been performed by Geophysical Specialties Company since 1957 in many parts of the, U. S. and Canada and in several foreign countries. These surveys have proven the refraction seismic technique to be applicable to a wide variety of engineering problems. The best known applications of the instrument have been in the, construction industry, where it is used for the delineation of material and mineral deposits and for bedrock depth determinations. Fast on-the-site depth determinations give reliable subsurface' information even in boulder-strewn soils. A widely publicized use of the MD-1 is to make rippability studies in which the instrument is used to determine the seismic velocity of the materials to be excavated. By use of special tables which correlate rippability with seismic velocities, such as those prepared by the Caterpillar Tractor Company using the MD-1, the rippability of-a specific material may be determined.

Batch laboratory-scale flotation tests were conducted on some carbonate-containing sedimentary phosphate ores to obtain concentrates suitable for chemical processing. The phosphate samples tested contained both calcite and dolomite. The calcitic phosphate ore was from Israel and the dolomitic ores were from China, India, Egypt, and Pakistan. The phosphate sample from Pakistan also contained a significant amount of silica. Several flotation techniques that have been proposed for upgrading carbonate -containing phosphate ores and concentrates were tested. Two processes gave better results compared with the other processes tested: a modified IMC anionic process and a. phosphoric acid depression process. At the best flotation conditions tested, phosphate concentrates assaying 32.5%-36.5% P205, 44.0%-51.0% CaO, and 0.6%-1.0% MgO were obtained at 69%-76% overall P205 recoveries from run-of-mine (ROM) ores containing 16.0%-25.0% P205, 40.0%-52.0% CaO, and 1.0%-11.6% MgO.

Recent developments in fine grinding by the means of mechanical impaction are the result of continuing improvements in modern machine construction. This is especially true when related to the bearings and mechanically operated parts of impact mills. These improvements allow manufacturers to increase the speeds of the impacting members Most of the more common forms of size reductions, such as percussion, pressure, friction and sectioning, or cutting were at one time accomplished by human hands. These actions were transferred to machinery. Originally of limited application, their use widened as industrial materials and construction became more sophisticated.

A laboratory study of the jigging process with Pittsburgh seam coal has been conducted. The laboratory-scale Baum jig used in this study was a McNally-Norton LO30X Right Hand Model Baum jig with an effective screen area of 0.186 m2 Feed material was prepared by selecting a size range from 6 mesh to 1.91 cm. Solid feed rates were 27.2 kg/min and 32.7 kg/min. Water flow rates were varied from 37.9 to 94.6 L/min. It has been found that smaller particles give higher values of density of separation and lower efficiency of separation. Increasing water flow rate increases the discharge rate of clean coal at a constant solid feed rate. It appears that the efficiency of separation increases by increasing water flow rate up to a certain value, and then levels off upon increasing the flow rate further.

INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

Good afternoon gentlemen. To begin, may I say ?thank you? to the AIME for the invitation to be here today to talk about my company's experience with shovel, truck, pocket, to car loading. The other author of this paper is here today. (Introduce John Sweet). Before we get to the details of this paper I want to tell you a little about Erie Mining Company. Erie Mining Company is located on the east end of the Mesabi Range in northern Minnesota and is engaged in the business of processing taconite rock into iron ore pellets. In 1970, the twelfth year of production, Erie will produce its rated capacity of 10.3 million tons of high grade iron ore pellets. The plant is the first of five iron ore pelletizing operations managed by Pickands Mather & Co. with a combined annual production capacity of 21 million tons. This plant began producing high grade iron ore pellets in 1957 placing it among the earliest of taconite production facilities in North America. Historically Pickands Mather & Co. had been a leading natural ore mine managing firm in the Great Lakes region for more than 70 years. Pickands Mather & Co. moved into the new field of taconite mining and processing with management and operational experience from the open pits and underground mines. We were to learn much of volume taconite handling requiring new equipment and new procedures. A trial and error period through the early years of taconite processing developed through the operation of an experimental sized preliminary plant near the present Erie Mining Company site.

To obtain a reliable comparison between conical and cylindrical separatory vessels used in dynamic dense-medium separation systems, the following two studies were made: a study of the swirling flow in conical and cylindrical vessels using laser-Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and a study of the behavior of suspensions of magnetite and ferrosilicon in water in both separators. It was found that the tangential velocity profiles differ in conical and cylindrical vessels. In a conical cyclone, free vortex conditions affect the largest part of the vessel, while in a cylindrical vessel, the motion approaches that of a forced vortex, i.e., that of a centrifuge. It was also found that the conical vessel manifests higher centrifigal acceleration and very strong densifying (the density differential) and, hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is large. It was found that the cylindrical vessel manifests lower centrifugal acceleration and low densifying, i.e., low-density differentials, and hence, the density gradient inside the vessel is small. Also, due to greater densifying, the density cut-point in cyclones is higher than the operating medium density, while, in cylindrical vessels, the density cut- point is closer to the medium density. The results provide an interesting description of the differing behaviors of conical and cylindrical vessels, and they help explain the differences in pegormance between the two types of separators.

Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

A common assumption in determining the shear strength of a rock joint using a direct shear test is that the surfaces undergoing relative shear are in complete contact. Furthermore, the limiting displacement associated with the residual strength values is obtained based on engineering judgement through visual inspection of shear force versus displacement curves. This study proposes a systematic way of determining the residual shear strength of rock joints by evaluating the limiting displacement leading to a minimum cohesive strength value and taking the true area of contact into account. The results of the study indicate that there is a limiting displacement associated with the residual shear strength, and some rocks may have an inherent interface residual cohesive strength different from zero. When the cohesion is different from zero, the residual shear strength is likely to be underestimated if the true area of contact is not considered. In the case where zero calculated cohesion is obtained, the area of contact has no bearing on the shear strength equation because the frictional force depends only on the normal load.
