Since start-up in 1985, the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170-g/ton (5 oz/ton) gold flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processes have been investigated to economically produce done' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes laboratory and pilot scale test work used in the process design and engineering. feasibility study of a 73-t/d (80 stpd) pressure oxidation and carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of verti¬cal autoclave units operating at 170°C (338F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

The flotation behavior of Florida phosphates was studied using statistical design of experiments to evaluate conditioning parameters and their effect on flotation performance. The solids loading, conditioning time and agitation speed during conditioning were identified as the important variables affecting the reagent coating onto particles. Flotation of the conditioned slurry was carried out at fixed collector dosage and flotation conditions. Phosphate recovery upon flotation was statistically modelled as a function of the conditioning variables. The results indicated that the conditioning variables had an interactive effect on the phosphate flotation performance. Statistical optimization revealed two conditioning regimes in which optimum flotation recovery was obtained. It was determined that optimal recovery can be obtained at lower conditioning energies.

I can recall a time 10 or 12 years ago when I spent a pleasant Sunday afternoon driving to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania to see a carnotite deposit that had recently been discovered. The announcement of the discovery stated that it was in the Pottsville conglomerate in a road cut along the highway. To my surprise, the highway was lined with cars and every weekend prospector for 100 miles had come to see the ?big uranium deposit of the east?. I literally had to stand in line to make a measurement with the scintillation counter I had with me. The thought at first occurred to me that this is evidence of how thoroughly the surface of the United States must have been prospected, more likely, perhaps it points out quite the opposite. A lot of time and energy was being spent in tracing the footsteps of others and a lot of time was spent looking for the obvious occurrences. The point is, that in the early days a tremendous amount of uranium exploration was carried out but few systematic surveys were made. Thorium anomalies were usually discounted after cursory surface field checks. Conversely, in airborne surveys - anomalies due to elevation changes or thin over- burden on hilltops were often investigated more thoroughly than smaller indications on hillsides and valleys. An adequate supply of uranium was nevertheless found due to the ingenuity and persistence of the geological profession and the public in general. This ?adequate? supply, like so many estimates for raw materials turned out to be far too low.

The Arab community is formed by around twenty countries in Africa and Asia, linked basically by a common language-Arabic - and the same religion, the muslim. They jointly occupy around 12 million square kilometers with a total population of around 140 million people. Nevertheless, these nations differ widely in their geographic area and population. Thus, while Egypt has a territory of over a million square kilometers and a population of nearly 40 million people, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have, among the three of them, less than 30, 000 square kilometers and a million inhabitants. The per capita income also vary greatly, depending on whether they are oil producing countries or not. Generally speaking, it can be said that these countries economies have been based on oil or agriculture and that in these last years, they have been making serious efforts to increase their degree of industrialization and have greatly improved their infrastructure. This trend has resulted in the development of the iron and steel industry, which is still in a stage of primary development.

Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

"Modeling and Simulation of SAG Mill has been widely used in design and optimization of mill performance in terms of its power draw, processing capacity and product size distribution. However, these models are solved under steady approximation and do not provide any information on mill charge distribution in real time. This paper attempts to characterize mill contents by solving Whiten’s first order contents based model in Matlab/Simulink environment. The parameters in the model such as breakage rate (S), discharge rate (D) and appearance function (A) were estimated utilizing process and design data collected from a gold mine operating in Alaska coupled with nonlinear parameter estimation scheme. This model is then utilized to predict dynamic response of other key operational variables such as mill power, bearing pressure, charge level and product size distribution. The transient response of mill behavior with respect to changes in feed size distribution, tonnage and mill feed water is also presented. This dynamic simulation approach can be used for practicing different control strategy and training purposes. The observed response of mentioned variables was validated utilizing dynamic response data from the plant to encompass operational characteristics of SAG Mill behavior. INTRODUCTION Grinding in mineral industry is one the most important steps in the process of size reduction and plays a crucial role in determining the overall economics of the milling plant. Much of the efforts focused on improving the process efficiency using modeling and simulation have been practiced by researcher and engineers. However, up till now these models were simulated under steady state approximation because of their complex nature and difficulty in programming them in a dynamic framework. Steady state simulations have been successfully utilized in circuit designing, capacity planning and pre-flowsheet optimization. The maturity in steady state models is because of its applicability and regular use in steady state simulation packages such as JKSimMet, Limn, ModSim, etc. With the advent of equipment such as SAG and AG mill has been a recent shift in the simulating these models using dynamic approach. Because of the economic benefits of these devices and ability to act both as a primary grinding device and as secondary or tertiary crushing device they have gained a large popularity and are now universal to any milling plant. However, these device poses a real challenge to engineers and researchers in terms of operation and control. The major reason attributed to problems faced is because the ore constitutes the major portion of the charge in these devices when compared to ball and rod mill. This rock charge is subjected to disturbance such as changes in feed size distribution and ore hardness which results in unstable operation and frequent mill stoppages. One way to prevent this is to measure and control these external variables, however, lack of available instrumentation and unavailability of sensors to measure these variables has foiled the understanding of complete process occurring inside the mill thereby, inhibiting development of proper control system."

Sizing devices used commercially are unfortunately not 100% efficient, the splits that can be obtained are usually inferior to the results obtained in the laboratory. Often the capital and operating costs of equipment capable of high sizing efficiency cannot be justified by the economics or requirements of the process. To reconcile the desired sizing efficiency needed to obtain optimum process requirements with the sizing efficiency of equipment economically practical, it is often necessary or desirable to predict the gradation and weight splits of the products obtained based on the expectant efficiency of the contemplated sizing device or method. The less efficient the sizing device one must employ, the more important it is to know the results that may be expected for the establishment of the optimum flow sheet and the more difficult it becomes to estimate the results accurately. Air classification equipment which sizes materials by opposing the drag force created by an air stream acting on a particle with a combination of gravitational, inertial or centrifugal forces are substantially less efficient than, for example, a laboratory sieve analysis. Air classifiers allow oversize material to contaminate the fine fraction and leave undersize material in the coarse fraction. The techniques employed to predict the gradation and weight splits obtained from air classification outlined below are adaptable to other sizing devices less than 100% efficient such as screens, sifters and wet classifiers.

In order to improve the thermal environment in deep coal mines, two principles can be applied: firstly, the reduction of heat flow into the air stream, and secondly, cooling of the air current. First of all one should try to minimize the heat-flow rate into the air stream underground by the mining method itself. German coal mines prefer the caving system of advance longwall mining simultaneously on several levels with ascensional ventilation. The effects of descensional ventilation and different face ventilation layouts on the thermal environment are discussed, besides the effects of pneumatic and hydraulic stowing. Application of all mentioned possibilities together instead of today's common mining method would reduce the Basis Effective Temperature considerably. In the future, hydraulic haulage of the raw coal underground substituting belt conveying may be a mean to improve the thermal environment further on. If the working depth of a coal mine exceeds about 1 000 m, cooling of the air stream under-ground will be necessary in addition to the above- mentioned measures. Generally, in German coal mines different types of indirect-contact air coolers located nearby the face are used. Besides such so-called cooling coils, large-capacity spray coolers are used because they work more efficiently if a great cooling duty is demanded. Common designs of both air cooler types and their possible utilizations are demonstrated. Deep coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany need up to 30 MW of total cooling capacity. Mostly, the needed chilled water is cooled by large-capacity refrigeration plants placed on surface, underground or in combination of the above locations nearby the shaft. Due to the increasing underground cooling demand, the distribution of the chilled water and the control of the air coolers become more important. The conception of a control system is discussed, which is based on the control of the single air coolers. All air coolers of a mine are controlled so as to optimize the supply water-flow rate with regard to the demanded cooling duty of the coolers. On the next upper level of the control system the whole chilled water network and finally the refrigeration plant is regulated. Present research work deals with the use of ice for cooling mines. There are some unsolved problems in this new cooling concept. Some aspects of making, transporting and storing ice are described. The use of ice may probably reduce the cooling costs of German collieries, which are at present approximately 4 DM per ton of saleable coal.

The western phosphate field, one of the United States' great mineral resources, lies within the western states of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. This Permian sedimentary deposit has been known since the turn of the century and since the 1920's has been mined for its phosphate content. Isolation from markets and relatively high mining costs have restricted development as compared to eastern United States deposits, but nevertheless a significant western phosphate industry has developed. Geographically the deposit covers an enormous area of about 337 000 km2 (130 000 sq miles). It covers Idaho from Pocatello east- ward, western Wyoming to the eastern flank of the Wind River mountains, and extends well into southwestern Montana and into a large area of northeastern Utah north of the Uinta Basin and east of the Salt Lake valley.

Two years ago, about the only US mining ventures that could turn even marginal profits were precious metals. In 1986, the price of gold dramatically increased, as did earnings from precious metals, mostly gold mines. First quarter results for 1987 show that gold will again be the most profitable type of mining in the US. All this money being made in gold resulted in many new mines being opened and hundreds of old workings being re-evaluated. The Society of Mining Engineers has put together a technical program to aid in developing precious metals mines. Problems facing the small miner The small miner has found and started most of the productive mines in the world, says Alfred G. Hoyl, of Coal Fuels Corp., Rollinsville, CO. Hoyl will state his case for small mines development in the opening session of the program. He will make the point that government regulations must never restrict the small mine or miner. And the mining industry must be careful not to crowd out the independent miner. "To restrict small mining is to say to our young men and women entering the mineral industry `There is no place for you as an independent.' Small is a relative term and we must never feel that starting small will restrict our possibilities of becoming big." In the same session, David J. Starbuck, Starbuck Minerals Management, Mayer, AZ will take a look at why smaller precious metals mines are profitable. Mining companies have changed their perspective on reworking previously mined properties. They are looking at abandoned properties in older mining districts. The attitude is that smaller operations in these districts can be profitable with the present economic climate, more advanced technology, and better management. Small, independent mining companies may not have the same resources to draw from as the majors. But there are affordable technologies available that fit into the independents' budget. Betty Gibbs, of Gibbs Associates, Boulder, Co will explain how a personal computer can help a small operation to analyze data more effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. Scenarios will be developed that will describe how PCs can be incorporated into all phases of an operation. Financial institutions are becoming more willing to consider venture capital for small precious metals mines, according to Stanley Dempsey, Denver Mining Finance Co., Denver, CO. This may be in the form of equity or debt, he says, but they want to receive assurances of the quality of the resource. And they will ask about the ore reserves. Next, the potential lender will want to know about the mining method and en¬vironmental regulations. Dempsey will discuss these requirements. Once a high grade gold mineralization is located and reserves proven, it must be evaluated to determine which recovery process is best suited for this deposit. Robert Martinez, Amselco Minerals, Ely, NV will evaluate processes for such a deposit located in Mexico. Heap leaching, vat leaching, and a carbon-in-pulp circuit are all viable options, he says. In 1994 Newmont Gold Company commissioned a 2.5 Mt/a refractory gold ore roasting plant near Carlin Nevada. Many unique characteristics of this facility required use of specialized materials of construction in the areas of dry grinding, roasting, gas cleaning, and sulfuric acid production. Process conditions and design criteria that necessitated the use of special materials include; siliceous and abrasive ore, low roasting temperatures, gas streams with high concentrations of oxygen and sulfur, and stringent environmental regulations. Materials selected for use were ceramics, corrosion resistant steels, high temperature steels, and high temperature polymers, lead, polypropylene and low flammability PVC.

Current competitive demands on the process industries stimulate the need for improved operating efficiencies and compliance to stricter governmental regulations. Emerging information technologies allow narrowing the gap between management business objectives and the process control level. Benefits come from enhanced energy management, operating costs reduction, enhanced scheduling of activities, reduced quality giveaway, enhanced market driven production and enhanced decision making. Plant management systems integrate economic performance monitoring by controlling the business rather than just throughput and product quality. Sound business based decisions about how to operate the plant can be achieved by adequate dynamic performance monitoring at the plant level and the enforcement of the desired targets at the process control level. This paper describes some of the key requirements to implement a process management system to meet stricter process performance standards. Extensions are made to facilitate conforming with regulations established by various governmental and industry monitoring agencies.

It is estimated that in excess of one-half million chemicals are used throughout the American workplace. Hundreds of new chemicals are also being introduced into the workplace annually. Exposure to some of these chemicals can be harmful to workers and to the environment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that approximately 25% of the U. S. labor force or approximately 25 million workers are exposed to one or more chemical hazards each year. OSHA has determined that this poses a serious problem for workers exposed to such chemicals. Chemical exposure may cause safety and health problems. Health problems can include a cause or contribution to heart ailments, kidney and lung damage, sterility, cancer, burns, and rashes. Safety hazards can include the potential to cause fires and explosions and other serious accidents.

The device called "Dynastat" which is described in this paper provides in situ borehole measurements of dynamic and static parameters for use in a wide range of design applications. In the dynamic mode, the Oynastat allows measurement of shear and compressional wave velocities. From these velocities in situ dynamic Young's modulus and other dynamic elastic parameters can be calculated. In the static mode, the device allows measurement of load versus deformation from which in situ static Young's modulus can be determined. Information on in situ horizontal stress fields can also be estimated from the load deformation curves. In both mining and civil engineering applications, in situ measurements of material properties are indispensable for accurate evaluation of design problems. Laboratory dynamic and static test measurements in comparison to in situ measurements are often misleading due to difficulties in obtaining undisturbed samples and in accounting for effects of discontinuities, etc., for mass properties. The authors contend that among in situ borehole measurements, the method employed with the Dynastat is the most accurate and detailed technique of measurement. The Dynastat employs the crosshole method of shear and compressional wave velocity measurements and also performs as a borehole jack to obtain load-deformation relationships of materials at exactly the same location at depth in boreholes.

This paper is written primarily from the standpoint of the miner and consumer of Missouri fireclays in refractory products, principally firebrick used in the linings of blast furnaces, hot metal transfer cars, the recuperators of glass melting tanks, and other allied uses involving contact with liquid metals and reactive slags. For these uses the manufacturing plant requires forecast of certain physical characteristics, as well as chemical characteristics, of the raw clays as a determination of practicability of mining, treatment such as pre -firing or calcining, and final usage area. These methods and results may leave something to be desired from an academic view, but are used my operation as an on-running guide to seeking and mining raw material. The high quality fireclays of Missouri are generally differentiated by the user as the softer, somewhat plastic, "bond" clays and the so-called flint clays suitable for a fired or unfired aggregate portion of a brick composition. The semi-plastic "bond" clays are mined in a producing area of northeast Missouri including Montgomery, Audrain, Callaway, Monroe, and Lincoln counties. In this geographic area the clays are the members of the cheltenham formation and occur in rather large lenses in which the usable members may approach 15 meters in thickness and an area of 6o to 8o acres. Overburden is dependent on the surface topography and, in our operations, varies from 8 meters to 25 meters. It can be up to 36 meters in the prairie uplands, but this is rarely strip mined. There was former mining by shaft and drift methods in which the overlying coal was also worked. These clays are primarily used as a binding material for other clay aggregates and is characterized by its lower refractoriness-cone 3o (165o c) to cone 321/2 (172o c), in terms of pyrometric cone equivalent, and an alumina - Al2o3 - content of plus or minus 31%. Addwest Minerals' turnaround of the Gold Road Mine in 1996 proves the old adage "mines are made, not found." The underground mine, located in Arizona's San Francisco mining district, was reopened in 1995. Start-up proved difficult because the initial mining method created significant ore grade dilution. Many public domain programs useful in mining engineering, e.g., MULSIM, DZTAB, and EXPAREA, require tedious data input and generate pages and pages of printed output. To eliminate the tedium and to enhance the output, ETI U.S., Inc. developed GEM, Graphics for Engineering and Mining, a collection of application programs and underlying interface tools for VAX/VMS computers. This paper presents an example of how an application program in GEM enhances a specific public domain program. It describes how GEM provides automated graphics assisted input and output. The paper describes how this program uses the GEM User Interface: the 3D GKS device independent graphics, server and drivers, various mining, mathematical and statistical algorithms, the means of handling graphics, data including IGES, and the foreign language interface.

Stage open stope mining (SOSM) maintains the stability of excavation openings by leaving a large number of rib pillars. Affected by the strong unloading due to stage mining and the low width-to-height (w/h) ratio of the pillars remaining, large-scale destabilization disasters of rib pillars or excavation openings easily occur when the distribution of ground stress or the size of rib pillars is unreasonable. In view of these problems, a physical SOSM model test was carried out based on an underground metal mine in the city of Chifeng in China, revealing the deformation and failure characteristics of the SOSM pillar group by overloading.
