A combined theoretical and laboratory test program is described with the purpose of providing a useful model of the multiple radial fracturing process. A non-quantitative conceptual model is developed as the basis for detailed mathematical modeling and test planning. The model includes borehole pressurization, flaw rupture, and gas- driven fracture propagation phases. The laboratory tests are carried out in blocks of scaled rock simulant loaded to a true three-dimension stress state and with miniature propellant/explosive charges in a wellbore as the fracturing energy source. The conceptual model, fracture initiation modeling, and laboratory test setup have been completed and are described. The remaining work is ongoing

The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

Introduction Minerals exploration is one step in the mining industry's task of providing raw materials to basic industries. The industry's provision of raw materials involves identifying and evaluating resources, converting them to reserves, and intelligent, economic exploitation of these reserves. The mineral process focuses on identification and evaluation. Reserves are ore bodies and ore bodies are, by definition, wasting assets. Therefore, if an adequate provision of raw materials to basic industry is to continue, these wasting assets (ore bodies) must be replaced with new or different reserves as current reserves are depleted. Minerals exploration is a geologic problem and is fundamentally deductive, flowing from the general to the specific. Past exploration methods and philosophy have amply supplied the resources to meet the demands of an industrial society. During the past decade, however, the framework where mineral resources were identified, defined, and evaluated has changed. Mineral explorationists no longer can rely solely on the successful past methods to provide the necessary resources for our complex society. Productive explorationists must effectively and efficiently use tools and procedures that will maximize exploration efforts. Past tools need not be abandoned, but should be critically reviewed and revised in light of current scientific knowledge and technical advances. Future explorationists will view their craft not as a single discipline, but as a thoughtful integration of geophysics, geochemistry, and geostatistics for solving interrelated problems. This integration of the geosciences will lead to successful mineral exploration. Not only will the productive explorationist generate new information, he will master the use of existing data for identifying and evaluating a mineral resource. The mineral exploration process consists of incentives, ideas, finance, area, staff, time, and luck. The exploration process that stems from the interaction of these elements has three stages, each bound by a major decision point. They are selection, reconnaissance, and definition. Subsequent evaluation and exploitation phases are considered more the function of mining engineers than the exploration geologist. Mineral exploration endeavors that have been productive have three attributes fundamental to success: commitment, competence, and persistence. Commitment Commitment is believing that exploring for mineral resources is worth performing. While the mining industry is the focus of this commitment, government and society must also be committed to the concept of mineral reserve identification through exploration activity. Government demonstrates its commitment by providing access to land for exploration and, if it is successful, exploitation can take place. Realistic legislation relating to taxation, land use, reclamation, and environmental constraints is indicative of government commitment to intelligent resource use. The public must come to terms with mineral resource evaluation and extraction. Without some form of commitment from the public, availability of mineral resources vital to basic industry will be largely in the control of a foreign and potentially unstable mining industry. Commitment to a mineral resource identification-evaluation-extraction system must be shared equally by government, society, and the minerals industry. The scope and direction of this commitment varies, with the industry's commitment to explore for mineral resources being the most apparent. Industry commitment is the belief at all levels of exploration (from senior corporate executives to individual field and support staff) that exploration is worth performing, that exploration goals can be met, and that their particular organization is the best and the only group that can successfully accomplish the project. In our laboratory, a new detection system using smell detectors was developed to detect the spontaneous combustion of coal and the combustion of other materials used underground. Laboratory experiments were carried out on several kinds of coals, including South African coals, and machine oil, wood and rubber used in belt conveyers. The following results were obtained: 1) Spontaneous combustion of coal can be detected earlier by smell detectors than by conventional CO detection methods. 2) There were no differences in the results using different kinds of coal. 3) Combustion of other materials can also be detected earlier by this system than by conventional detectors for gas and smoke. 4) Use of this detection system enables one to discern the source of the combustion gases, whether it be coal, wood, oil or rubber.

Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

Discussion by D.G. Krige I read the paper "The jackknife approach" with interest. There appears to be a widespread misunderstanding of the kriging variance as a measure of the error variance of the kriged grade estimate of an ore block. Virtually all mineral deposits display skew frequency distributions and are subject to the well-known proportional effect. Thus, it is usual to find in an ore body, when subdivided a really into subpopulations, that the variances of the grades (or the total sills of the variograms) for the subpopulations will be correlated with the corresponding mean grades (usually linearly with the squares of the mean grades). Thus, the variogram will be station. When this feature is evident, the relative variograms for the subpopulations (i.e., with variogram values divided by the relevant mean squared) will be similar, or they could even be accepted at an averaged model for the whole ore body with stationarity. Using this approach, the kriging variance will reflect the relative error variance that is to be multiplied by the kriged block grade estimate squared to yield the usual kriging variance for purposes of confidential limits. The objection that the kriging variance does not take into account the local grades used for a block valuation then falls away. In the example given by the authors, the global mean grade is not recorded. But the global variance, taken at the value of the total sill, is 0.005, whereas the variance of the 11 values used in the example is 0.000152. The two variances differ by a factor of nearly six. If the relative variogram approach is applicable in this case, the need for a jackknife technique will fall away. Also note that, for skew distributions, the confidence limits for ore-block estimates will be skew as well, and symmetrical normal limits will not apply. RepIy by G.S. Adisoma and M.G. Hester There are a few interesting ways to utilize the block-by-block kriging variance that the authors have encountered. One of them is to classify a particular block into a proven-probable reserve or a possible-resource category, using a somewhat subjectively determined kriging variance value. Here, the kriging variance still represents the drilling density, i.e., data configuration more than the data values. Professor Krige mentions another ingenious approach through the use of relative variograms. This will yield a block kriging variance that takes into account local (block) grade, as he correctly points out, for purposes of confidence limits. However, we are more interested in quantifying the uncertainties associated with grade estimation in a much larger scale than a block. e.g., for a mining phase or the minable reserve. The jackknife, through the block kriging shortcut, provides a simple solution to obtain a single estimation variance for a general shape. The authors' main reference discusses different ways to handle skewed distributions typical in mineral resource estimation, e.g., the weighted jackknife approach or data transformation. Also, as with any technique, we can always improve our estimate by subdividing into smaller populations that are geologically and statistically separate domains. As we have mentioned; the jackknife is but a tool in our collection of tools to solve estimation problems. The jackknife's appeals are its simplicity and versatility. It is handy when no other solution is available, or when the available solution is not practical. It is used with other methods, not to replace them altogether. ?

"The evolutional process is always about solving existent problems in order to provide further achievements. But the more something evolves, the more challenges it faces towards greater evolution. Industrial automation systems in Mining have also evolved a lot in the past decades, but they now face new challenges about integration: how to integrate different locations and systems, in a way to reduce costs and increase overall mine efficiency and safety for the operation. This paper compares conventional mining process automation architectures vs. a state-of-the-art, completely integrated system using Electrical Integration based on IEC 61850 standard for Substation Automation Systems. Emphasis is placed on the benefits to manage the entire mining plant as a whole, not only looking at the production rates, but also at the energy consumption for each part of process. In addition, it is discussed how an integrated system approach unlocks safety and productivity gains such as overall process optimizations, improved operator effectiveness, increased plant availability, and reduced maintenance costs. INTRODUCTION The world is constantly changing, and evolution is a natural part of mankind history. The role of evolutional process is to solve existent problems, but usually these solutions create new issues that need to be addressed. This scenario is also applicable to the industrial environment, in which the demand for higher profitability and efficiency on their processes requires solutions with more productivity using less resource. This is not different when it comes to energy consumption: how to optimize production rates and reduce energy costs at the same time? Regarding automation systems, the trend for the industries is to focus on four main challenges: how to provide safety for personnel; how to reduce initial investment for new plants; how to connect remote and in harsh locations; and above all how to deal with the lack of integration between several systems."

A prototype expert advisor was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to systematically offer advice on the control of a Florida phosphate operation. The PC based system receives input from remote sensors for circuit parameters such as feed rate, reagent addition, and pH and from operator entered information such as the quality of the concentrate and tailings in each of the coarse, fine, and amine flotation circuits. The computer evaluates the information using rules obtained from industry representatives and Bureau flotation experts. Recommended actions and questions are displayed to quickly guide the operator to a problem within the flotation circuit and suggest a solution. This process control system could provide more uniformity among the flotation operators and also serve as a trainer for new operators. In addition, it represents a step toward fully automated systems for phosphate flotation.

The intersections of numerous joint sets at the surface of tunnels of the Abu-Tartour project in Egypt create blocks of irregular shape and size in the rock mass. Although most of these blocks are unable to move into the free space of the tunnel, a few key blocks are capable of such movement. In addition, as soon as they move, some restrained blocks will be liberated. The aim of this work is to find the removable key blocks of the walls, floor, roof and corners of a portion of the tunnel under jointed surface rocks and then determine the best tunnel direction.

In 1996, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) completed an Endangered Species Act (ESA) programmatic Section 7 consultation. From the resultant Biological Opinion, it was found that coal mining operations conducted under federally approved state regulatory programs would not likely jeopardize the continuation of federally listed species nor result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitats. The requirements of the ESA and their integration into the SMCRA permitting process and the responsibilities of the regulatory agency, the FWS and the coal operator will be discussed. Guidance on the development of protection and enhancement plans will be provided and site-specific examples given.

FMC Gold's Paradise Peak Mine, located 13 km (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became operational in April of 1986. Shortly thereafter heap leach testwork began on sub mill grade ore. Presently, testwork continues in combination with production size heaps that account for approximately 6% of total gold production at Paradise Peak.

Ashanti Goldfields Corporation (Gh) Ltd., the leading gold mining operation in Ghana is embarking on a major rehabilitation and expansion programme to increase gold production. A new southern ventilation district was targeted for this programme, and the ventilation system was to be reviewed in order to cope with increased production. The southern ventilation district was previously ventilated by booster fans. This arrangement was however, inadequate to solve the problem of the need to reduce smoke clearance time of the production areas, and to generally improve the underground ventilation conditions. Fan maintenance costs increased with the number of fans installed in the booster fan arrangement, and the fact that the fans were installed underground made maintenance difficult and took longer time. It became necessary to consider the installation of a new main fan on the surface. This paper gives an overview of the ventilation systems of the southern ventilation district of the mine before and after the new main fan was installed. The field tests carried out on the fan to ensure that it complied with supplier's specifications are described, and the new system analysed to see it's effectiveness.

CANMET has developed a simple yet very effective tracer gas method to test the efficiency of stench gas emergency warning systems which can easily be performed by mine personnel. This test method uses sulphur hexafluoride (SF,) as a surrogate for such stench gases as ethyl mercaptan. The test has many advantages: it is non-disruptive to production because SF, is odourless, colourless; it is safe to use as it is inert and only a small volume, insufficient to reduce oxygen levels, is necessary to dope the air with a measurable concentration; and most importantly it provides definitive results to assess the adequacy of the warning system. Specific findings of these tests have included, over doping sections of the mine and subsequent production loss due to sickness, the warning being ignored, the injection period being too short, excessive dispersion, and inadequate notification times. The simple test protocol involves releasing a known volume of the SF, under similar circumstances to those of the stench gas, and then sampling for its presence downstream. These samples are collected in air-tight syringes which are then analyzed in a laboratory with a gas chromatograph. By direct proportion, between the size of the stench and tracer gas releases, it is possible to convert the SF, concentration into equivalent stench gas concentrations profiles. From these, it is possible to define, the initial arrival time of the gas, the time it takes to reach a "target" notification concentration, whether the gas peak will exceed TWAEV, STEV and CEV exposure limits, and the duration of the peak above these levels. Since 1993, this test protocol has been employed a total of eight times on four different Canadian mine properties and the results are being used to optimize the stench gas release system with respect to volume of gas used, duration of injection, and number of injection locations.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. Basic dimensions and weight of the T282 are: ? Overall length, 14.5 m (47.5 ft). ? Overall width, 8.7 m (28.7 ft). ? Loading height, 6.5 m (21.2 ft). ? Height - body up, 13.9 m (45.9 ft). ? The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

"Plutonic-related" gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As- (Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of the depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton. These associations have been used successfully in exploration. Results from several analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations. Gold and bismuth have paired mineralogy at high temperatures and, thus, are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 4 to 4 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100' to 300' in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

A model of mineral liberation was developed using back calculation techniques to determine breakage/liberation parameters in a similar manner to the way breakage parameters are determined in the Population Balance Model (PBM). Comminution and liberation data was collected from grinding mills operating at Pasminco lead/zinc mine Broken Hill, and Mt. Isa Mines copper concentrator, Mt Isa, Australia. Laboratory scale single particle breakage tests on ore samples from these sites were undertaken using a twin pendulum breakage device. Break- age/liberation parameters were then determined for several mills using back calculation techniques. The liberation/breakage parameters were then used to simulate mill liberation performance under varying conditions.
