U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration, namely, nitrogen, air and oxygen on ball war was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. 'Marked ball grinding, tests along with electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen towards wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry-appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

In the fairly recent past, with a history of cheap and abundant energy, it has been possible to predict with reasonable confidence that world energy demand would continue to double about every 15 years. Those who attempted to forecast the role of nuclear energy in future electricity generation could also start with the fairly safe assumption that electricity demand would increase even faster : with a doubling in demand about every 10 years. To estimate the likely future world demand for uranium it was then necessary to introduce a number of other assumptions including the rate of penetration of nuclear energy, the timing and the specific fuel requirements. This series of assumptions naturally compounded the uncertainty, but, remarkably, usually led to future uranium demands being overestimated. Such a bias which has almost always been observed in predictions made over the past 20 years has increasingly made uranium producers sceptical when expected to match the forecast demand with increased production capacity and supporting reserves. This scepticism has, of course, been reinforced by the persistence so far of a buyers' market in uranium throughout the entire period of emergence of commercial nuclear electricity generation.

The Mineral Resources Institute at The University of Alabama is engaged in a program whose objective is to develop a beneficiation system for Eastern oil shales. Prior experience (1,2) at The University had shown that the grind required for liberation of the oil rich kerogen was substantially below 20~m. Based on this fact and the rapidly emerging consensus that column flotation is the preferred method for ultrafine particle separation, efforts were focused on the column flotation of oil shale. This paper, which must be regarded as a progress report on a continuing MRI project, describes the observations made and the results achieved to date. The investigation is being conducted in two phases. The first phase has been completed and consisted of a factorially designed experiment conducted for the purpose of screening a set of primary flotation variables. The second phase, which is still in progress, is focused on optimization of the operating conditions and development of a flowsheet for specific shales.

The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. Other good sources of information are operating coal mines that may be in the same seam in nearby properties. Such mines may indicate in advance much about roof control, drainage, ventilation, and other mining problems.

Mining of molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock-types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the ore body. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

Elemental sulphur occurrences are widely distributed in two geological environments: -1-Basins containing hydrocarbons and zones of Cenozoic vulcanism. However, very few of these constitute deposits large enough to be of commercial importance. Almost all of the elemental sulphur mined in the world comes from bioepigenetic deposits in petroliferous basins. These deposits occur in two general structural styles: diapiric (salt domes) and stratiform. Examples of diapiric deposits occur in the Gulf Coast basins of Texas, Louisiana, and southern Mexico. Examples of stratiform deposits occur in the Fergana and Amudarya depressions of Central Asia, the Mesopotamian Depression in Iraq, the Cis-Carpathian Trough in Poland and Russia, and the Permian Basin in Texas. Economic bioepigenetic sulphur deposits range in size from approximately 1 million tons of sulphur in the smaller salt dome deposits to more than ZOO million tons of sulphur at the Mishraq stratiform deposit in Iraq. Total world production from bioepigenetic deposits amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sulphur per year, one-half of the world's present annual consumption of elemental sulphur. Most of the balance of the annual consumption is recovered from sour gas and petroleum. All bioepigenetic sulphur deposits share remarkably similar origins and characteristics. They are formed by anaerobic bacterial replacement of gypsum or anhydrite in tilted basins where evaporite beds are underlain by petroleum. Figure 1 illustrates a generalized cross-section of a salt dome sulphur deposit. Figures Z, 3, and 4 are cross-sections of three types of stratiform sulphur deposits. In terms of sulphur genesis, the only significant difference between the salt dome and stratiform deposits is that the positioning of the anhydrites above the petroleum in the salt domes is caused by diapiric rather than sedimentary processes. In the salt domes, the residual anhydrites of the cap-rocks are accumulated by solution and removal of halite by artesian ground waters.

The mechanization of the materials management function must contribute to the overall goal of optimization of profits. A computerized system contributes to the profitability of the company by saving more than it costs to operate. Design and implementation of the sys- tem must respond to the needs of users, the operating environment of the property, and must support the objectives of materials management. Three basic functions interact within the scope of materials management. They are inventory control, purchasing, and warehousing which have the following objectives: 1) Inventory control-to request materials in a timely manner and in quantities that provide the best level of support to users at the lowest cost. 2) Purchasing-to purchase requested materials and services at the required time and at the lowest cost. 3) Warehousing-to efficiently receive, store, and issue materials and to prepare accurate transaction documents for the activities. The development of the mechanized materials management system will require a plan and objective analysis by management and system users of system requirements. A typical plan would include: 1) System Design Objectives-the development of objectives that support mechanization of the materials management function. 2) System Characteristics and Concepts- the development of key system concepts and characteristics, which identify the needs of materials management. 3) System Inventory Item Classification- development and assignment of inventory category codes to inventory items. 4) System Order Decision Rules-the development of decision rules and forecasting techniques to minimize the inventory investment and to provide acceptable support levels. 5) System Report Structure-the development of a report structure to support the goals and objectives of materials management. 6) System Report Design-the development and design of reports for effective utilization of the mechanized system.

The heterogeneous distributions of nodule sizes, cover-ages and abundances and the variability of their burial und association with sediments and rock outcrops on the seafloor have emerged as crucial parameters in considering the exploitation potential of the manganese nodules in the central part of the Indian Ocean. Nodules with the long axis measuring from 20 and 40 mm (0.8 and 1.6 in.) account for nearly 60% to 70% of those evaluated from photographic and grab-sample data. In addition, 75% of the nodules (by weight) are between 20 and 60 mm (0.8 to 2.4 in.). The distribution of nodules with abundances ranging from 1 to 20 kg/m2 as well as coverages of 1 % to 90% on the seafloor are important considerations in demarcating the potential areas for nodule mining. The mining of areas with higher concentrations of nodules, such as along slopes associated with less sediment, would result in the enhanced recovery of nodules compared to areas with low nodule concentrations, such as in valleys and plains where thick sediment covers occur. The mining head will encounter substrates such as hard rock exposures, either with or without Fe-Mn encrustations, as well as soft sediment layers in the nodule fields. It must be able to collect buried nodules under sediment cover, and it must be able to negotiate uphill and downhill slopes in mining areas. Mapping prior to mining must delineate areas to he avoided and must define locations to be mined. The requirements suggest that the nodule collector must be a dynamic (active) system with sensors to detect areas of potential nodule concentrations, as well as features that are hazardous (or unfavorable) for mining operations.

INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. The concept of subsystem characteristic curves for multiple-fan ventilation networks is presented through the construction of characteristic curves for two-fan, series-parallel networks. By considering fans as the individual network branches, the multiple-fan network is viewed as consisting of two components: any one fan branch, which is called the reference fan branch, and its associated subsystem. Thus, F subsystems can be designated for the network with F fan branches. Each subsystem contains one or more fan branches. The subsystem characteristic curve is the pressure-vs.-quantity curve of the subsystem. As illustrated in the example networks, the subsystem characteristic curve is not a strictly increasing curve and does not pass through the origin. The intersection of the characteristic curves for the subsystem and the reference fan branch represents an operating point. Multiple intersections therefore represent multiple operating points.

The Afton copper-gold mine is located in the southern interior of British Columbia, 16 km (10 miles) west of Kamloops and 257 km (160 miles) northeast of Vancouver. 'An aerial view of the property in 1976 is shown in Fig. 1. The Afton copper-gold ore body [27 Mt (30 million tons)] of open pit ore with a grade of 1.0% copper, 0.46 g/t (0.01 6 oz per ton) gold, and 4.1 g/t (0.12 oz per ton) silver, occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The geological setting of the Afton ore body is described by Carr and Reed (1976). Rocks of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras outcrop in the vicinity of Kamloops, but the unit with the greatest economic significance is the Upper Triassic Nicola volcanic group and its subvolcanic dioritic intrusion, the Iron Mask pluton. The Afton ore body occurs at the northwesternextremity of the Iron Mask pluton immediately south of a deep graben structure that developed in post-Triassic time (Coast Mountains orogeny) and which was the focus of vigorous sedimentation and volcansim in Tertiary times. The Iron Mask pluton is a lenticular composite intrusion approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length in a northwesterly direction. The petrography of the Iron Mask pluton ranges from picrite and serpentinite to latite porphyry. Outcrops of individual petrographic units are generally elongate in a northwesterly direction parallel to the axis of the pluton. The Iron Mask pluton represents the moderately slowly cooled core of an oceanic fissure volcano which built up an island flanked by shallow-water sediments including reef knolls and which, during its later stages, intruded its own volcanic pile.

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel is a 13 km (8 mile) long segment of the Inland Feeder Project. This 3.65 m (12 ft) finished diameter water tunnel presented many challenges that had to be overcome to take the project from concept to reality, not the least of which were the diverse ground conditions. Construction of the tunnel was carried out by a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) in one tunnel drive. The project is considered a success due to the accurate baseline established for the ground conditions; the approaches used to mitigate adverse conditions; and the appropriate use of TBM excavation methods, which achieved rapid advance rates despite the challenging ground conditions.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." "Ed Rapp is among those who believe in the saying that necessity is the mother of all invention. Rapp is the president of Caterpillar’s mining group. As such, he is tasked with leading the world’s largest mining equipment maker, and its customers, through this time of lower commodity prices, while also positioning his company to be prepared for better days that lie ahead.The decade-long mining boom fueled by growth in emerging markets and demand for commodities that led to record prices for some metals paused in 2008 with the global financial crisis. However, according to Rapp, thanks to stimulus packages around the world, and in particular the stimulus from China that was focused on infrastructure, the mining sector recovered fairly quickly, and from 2010 to 2012, mining was strong.And then the stimulus stopped. Credit dried up and global growth began to slow down and, in the three years since, commodity prices have declined by an average of 60 percent. Caterpillar expanded during the boom, acquiring Bucyrus, and investing billions into the mining sector. It has felt the pinch of the slowdown as much as any mining company in the world. These pages, and those of other mining publications as well as mainstream media, have been filled with stories of doom and gloom about the industry. But Rapp, while acknowledging that the difficult times have been painful, also said Caterpillar sees opportunity in the slow down and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the mining industry as absolute."

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. Room-and-pillar mining at White Pine started in 1953 from a sub-outcropping orebody that gently dips to 1000 m depths in a distance of about 6 km. High horizontal stresses were recognized in the mid-1960s which had obvious stability impacts when viewed in combination with the increased overburden stresses. Modifications in conventional room-and-pillar design were introduced through the years on a trial-and-error basis to help overcome stability and resource recovery problems. These modifications were based on pressure arch concepts using pillar yielding and/or pillar recovery, and on mine layout orientation to minimize stress impacts. While some of these modifications were successfully applied in some areas, they failed in others. Through the years, visual observations played a major role in panel design with contributions from stress measurements and analyses. However, the down slide in the copper economy during the 1970s and early 1980s resulted in a loss of interest in the application of these concepts. This paper reviews ground control problems and presents the results of recent stress measurements and computer analyses. They shed light on the importance of using yield pillars and mine layout orientation to control stresses at depth.

The folded Appalachians are a physiographic province of eastern North America extending from Nova Scotia to Alabama. The province strikes through the state of Pennsylvania (see Fig. 1) comprising roughly 20 percent of the state and it is here that the focus of this paper will attend. The province is a thick sedimentary sequence which was compressed into a folded mountain belt by the Appalachian Orogeny which terminated at the end of the Permian. The stratigraphy contains both carbonate and non-carbonate rocks as a reflection of the depositional environment at any specific time and place during the Paleozoic geosynclinal accumulation. Although a great deal of variety and difference exists in the geology from one end to another, a common thread of structural and stratigraphic style exists. Carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, comprise a substantial percentage of the total Appalachian stratigraphy and are interbedded with clastic materials such as sandstones, siltstones, and shales. The carbonate rocks are extensively mined and collectively represent a vast economic resource.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.
