High tonnage hoisting of materials by vertical conveyors through deep shafts is a relatively new concept in mining that is proving to be effective. The development of the Pocketlift® belt by Metso Flexowell, located in Moers, Germany, enabled the installation of a deep shaft vertical conveyor in 2002. This application followed years of design and operational experience gained in medium-depth shafts around the world. The design, manufacture, installation and operational experience of an 1,818 tonnes capacity, 273 meters vertical lift, Pocketlift® belt system at the White County Coal Pattiki 2 Mine is the subject of this work

"Today’s underground construction megaprojects are tremendous feats of engineering on a massive scale, excavating through ground conditions once thought impossible, using new and innovative contracting practices. But one important truth remains unchanged; projects are built by people. What separates winning projects from the rest? Great people, working in great organizations. In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. We also wish to preface this with the following cautionary statements: • The authors do not pretend to be the “Good PM” in all cases. In fact, we’re almost certainly the “Bad PM” for some. We aim to improve on those areas. • It has been said that “The only real training for leadership is leadership.” (Antony Jay) We all started somewhere, and nobody has 20 years of experience on day one. • Converting this text into some sort of prescriptive checklist would be a disservice to the evolution of project management. In 1990, US mine production of barite increased 54.1 %. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 27.6%. Imports were about the same as 1989. World mine production in¬creased 12.3%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 12.7%, according to the Bureau. The declared value, cif US port, of all imported crude barite during the year 1990 increased from $40.27/t ($36.54 per st) in 1989 to $40.61/t ($36.84 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 82% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 750/c, of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This includes barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics, and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating, (1010), was 16.2% more than the 1989 average of 869 in the US.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which enables completely new designs of conventional shell and tube configurations. This article explains the principle and application of this self-cleaning heat exchange technology and also pays attention to an actual case of a revamp of the severely fouling exchangers of a conventional multi-effect evaporator into a self-cleaning configuration. Possibilities for the revamp of conventional exchangers suffering from massive and very hard scale deposits are found in a variety of metallurgical processes, such as: The refining of nickel, the production of alumina from bauxite and many others.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. DPM exposure is therefore regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The current monitoring process takes days or weeks for exposure levels to be known, and a real-time monitoring device is needed. It is believed that infrared spectroscopy has potential for use in a real-time, field-portable device. This paper presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios.

Newmont mine geologists have added substantial economic value developing over 1,150 tonnes into quality surface and underground gold reserves since 1986. However, the recent 5-year gold price slump from $387 to $262 per ounce has shifted mine geologists focus to optimizing open pit profitability and developing high-grade, high cash flow and low capital development underground reserves. More than $65 million projected revenue has been added to the Gold Quarry south layback following multi-departmental model reconciliation investigations. Kriged mine polygon construction, controlled blast heave and high-quality geologic advice in selective mining will have multi-million dollar beneficial impacts.

During 1993, contraction of indus¬trial economies in Germany (-2%), France (-1 %), Japan (-0.1 %), Eastern Europe (-2%) and the former Soviet Union (-13%) dimmed prospects of a robust economic recovery for North America. Some European countries that suffer from high unemployment and large government deficits have non-com¬petitive cost structures that will require long-term economic reforms to solve. Restructuring in the United States also continued in 1993. The sluggish pace of the US economic recovery, in¬troduction of federal tax increases and the persistence of high levels of unemployment did little to inspire consumer confidence. By the end of the year, however, sales of consumer durable and capital equipment began to grow. Depressed demand for minerals by industrial economies in recession was partially offset by continuing rational¬ization or abandonment of non-competi¬tive productive capacity in Eastern Eu¬rope and the former Soviet Union. Al¬though aluminum, lead, titanium sponge and zinc prices fell, increases in copper and steel consumption helped steady their prices along with prices of some alloys. Cash flow to the mining industry - the primary source of exploration funds - was therefore constrained. For many companies, exploration expendi¬tures were reallocated geographically and in terms of commodities sought.

This paper presents an assessment of modeling techniques in predicting subsidence over longwall areas. Extensive instrumentation, both at the surface and subsurface of three longwall mines in northern West Virginia have been made. Ground movements were monitored during" a three year-period until subsidence ceased in these areas. A comparative analysis of empirical subsidence prediction techniques including, graphical {NCB}, profile function, influence functions (USBM, BAL'S, KNOTHE'S, and zone area) will be presented. A brief geologic and topographic description of each site along with the instrumentation and monitoring program will also be presented.

Many times during the construction of a project, whether large or small, the engineer will become involved with management of the work and workforce. In some cases, mine management will turn over the direction and responsibility of doing the work to the engineer. Because of this, it is important to know some of the basic principles of human resource applications- among other management concerns. This chapter, therefore, looks at the fundamental principles of human resource management. Three broad discussions are presented to the reader. These are: (1) organization, communications, and responsibilities of management; (2) analysis of worker motivation; and (3) supervisory leadership. Each topic encompasses the current thinking for coal mining and mining management. Much of the information in this chapter comes from Practical Coal Mine Management, by this author and published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., which discusses in depth many of the ideas presented here. Georgius Agricola in 1556 wrote De Re Metallica, one of the first and probably the most famous of mining reference works. In Book 1 he reflects rather elegantly on mining and miners. "Many persons hold the opinion that the metal industries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requiring not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. For a miner must have the greatest skill in his work, that he may know first of all what mountain or hill, what valley or plain, can be prospected most profitably, or what he should leave alone; moreover, he must understand the veins, stringers, and seams in the rocks. Then he must be thoroughly familiar with the many and varied species of earths, juices, gems, stones, marbles, rocks, metals, and compounds. He must also have a complete knowledge of the method of making all underground works. Lastly, there are the various systems of assaying substances and of preparing them for smelting; and here again there are many altogether diverse methods. ... "Furthermore, there are many arts and sciences of which a miner should not be ignorant. First there is Philosophy, that he may discern the origin, cause, and nature of subterranean things; for then he will be able to dig out the veins easily and advantageously, and to obtain more abundant results from his mining. Secondly, there is Medicine, that he may be able to look after his diggers and other workmen, that they do not meet with those diseases to which they are more liable than work- men in other occupations, or if they do meet with them, that he himself may be able to heal them or may see that the doctors do so. Thirdly follows Astronomy, that he may know the divisions of the heavens and from them judge the direction of the veins. Fourthly, there is the science of Surveying that he may be able to estimate how deep a shaft should be sunk to reach the tunnel which is being driven to it, and to determine the limits and boundaries in these workings, especially in depth. Fifthly, his knowledge of Arithmetical Science should be such that he may calculate the cost to be incurred in the machinery and the working of the mine. Sixthly, his learning must comprise Architecture, that he himself may construct the various machines and timber work required underground, or that he may be able to explain the method of the construction to others. The U.S. iron ore industry is located primarily in Northern Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula with one additional small plant in Missouri. There are currently some 10 plants operating that produce about 48 million tons per year of pellets. The major reagent use occurs in the three general areas of: flocculation, flotation and pellet additives. Minor areas of usage are for corrosion inhibition and dust suppression. Current practice as to types of reagents, consumption, and method of application are reviewed. The interaction of reagents with other parts of the process are discussed. Also included is a discussion of future reagent needs.

The Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming and southcentral Montana contains the largest strip minable reserve of compliance coal (0.27 kg or 0.6 or less Ibs of sulfur per million Btu) in the United States. In mining parlance, it is the mother lode. Wyoming's portion of the Basin is called the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB). It has been the nation's top coal producer for the past nine years. And based on 1997 production statistics and estimated strippable compliance coal reserves, Wyoming should remain the nation's top producer for the next 51 plus years. In August 1994, ME featured 10 articles that covered all aspects of coal production in the SPRB. In this issue, five authors update the 1994 articles and provide a pre- diction of what the Basin will look like at the turn of the century. This paper describes research by the Bureau of Mines on alternative materials-handling strategies for reducing the costs and incidence of back injuries in low-seam coal mines. Strategies recommended for redesigning materials-handling tasks include elimination of tasks, mechanization of tasks, and matching lifting tasks to the physical capabilities of underground miners. The report also discusses other methods that can be used by management to reduce the costs associated with back injuries. More detail can be found in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 9235 (Gallagher et al. 1990).

The stability of a hemispherical cavity, intended to model a perforation opening in the vicinity of a borehole, is analyzed for the case of poroelastic-plastic material behavior. Two plasticity models of differing complexity are considered, with the emphasis in either model being the use of strain softening to calculate inelastic stiffness. Sample results illustrate the effect of steady fluid flow on the response, and possible collapse, of the near perforation region.

This paper describes work carried out to obtain a heat balance in the B3 shaft longwall stope at Blyvooruitzicht gold mine. Recordings were made of the temperature of the air and chilled water entering and leaving the section during three periods, August 1 September 1977, November 1 December 1977 and March 1978. These recordings, together with numerous other measurements were used to determine the rate at which heat was being removed from the section by the various fluids flowing through the section. The rate at which heat was entering the section was then calculated, by considering each source in turn. These two sets of figures made it possible to draw up a heat balance, and also obviously gave vital information on the magnitudes of the various heat sources and on the methods used to remove heat. In general reasonable heat balances were obtained, the errors being in the range -6 per cent to +22 per cent.

In a continuing effort to improve plant efficiency, United States Steel's Atlantic City Ore Operations completed the rubber lining of its balling drums in late 1982. This resulted in benefits of reduced bentonite consumption, reduced maintenance costs, improved production rates, and lower power consumption. These advantages far outweigh the disadvantages of increased oversize production and increased surging on the roll screen sizing devices. Certain operating characteristics and variables are discussed herein.

"Can we use data to make communication effective? How does one successfully tackle the challenge of solving cultural differences and harmonizing the needs of diverse stakeholders while developing and maintaining a strong and reliable corporate image? Is it possible to achieve better engagement and minimizing risks with data? This paper aims to explore human rights and business procedures, the promotion of shared prosperity in a sustainable manner and the use of metrics to guide decision-making process. Among the topics examined are: • the significance of stakeholder engagement in community development projects; • the use of grievance mechanisms to give a voice to First Nations and communities / populations in vulnerable positions (including children and elders); • the benefits of configuring and implementing a feedback system in partnership with the communities. This research is a preliminary initiative and has limitations on the extent of the material used. The author acknowledges there is a vast amount of work and publications available on this subject, as well, as a variety of examples that have not been included. The intention is to keep developing this research to assess and expand how data can be used to minimize risks and improve engagement, in addition to inspire others to continue advancing this topic. Natural resources consumption is a reality that will not disappear in a foreseeable future. Several developments and operations are located in remote areas where communities in vulnerable situation and Indigenous Peoples live. Feedback systems are being ratified as a tool to help tackling the challenges of harmonizing cultural differences and fulfilling the needs of diverse stakeholders. Integrating social, environmental, and economic values plays an imperative purpose in preserving a productive and trustworthy relationship with stakeholders. Positioning social standards next to environmental and economic principles shows inclusiveness and firm intention of integration. We add value to a positive image of our industry by embracing responsibility for corporate actions and promoting their beneficial impact on the environment. The social context within communities, groups and organizations is dynamic and presents new challenges as connections evolve. There are wildly diverse expectations which one may need to address during exploration, construction and operating phases. Disagreements are an inevitable consequence of interactions due to the different needs and requirements of the parts involved. Nevertheless, balancing differences and solving conflicts can offer remarkable opportunities for improvement."

Emissions of particulates, unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (NO[ ]) and carbon monoxide (CO) from diesel engines are of concern in mines, particularly underground mines. All these undesirable products except NOx are the result of incomplete combustion in the cylinders. Various approaches to achieving more complete combustion in diesel engines have included different fuel compositions, use of catalysts, fuel additives, engine modifications, and oxygen-enriched intake air. The present study shows that injecting minute quantities of primarily platinum group metal catalysts into the intake air of a Deutz/MWM D916-6 mine diesel engine substantially reduces emissions in the exhaust. The catalyst injection system, which was developed by National Fuelsaver Corporation (Robin. 1981), transfers catalyst compounds in solution to a stream of air bubbles by a process called Bubble Fractionation (Lemlich et al.. 1966, 1968. 1970). The amounts are so minute that concentrations in the engine exhaust should be well below OSHA/NIOSH Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure limits at steady state, a fact that was confirmed by analysis of collected particulates in the exhaust. When the catalyst injection was used along with a pleated paper filter to remove exhaust particulates, the filter operating life was shortened greatly. Therefore, this system is not recommended for use on diesel engines equipped with a water scrubber and a filter. It does offer a practical and relatively economical way of reducing exhaust emissions from other diesel engines, such as those in outby mine service

The Mount Pleasant Mines, or Mount Pleasant Joint Venture as it is presently known, is located approximately 59.5 km (37 miles) south of Fredericton, NB, Canada. Earliest indications of mineralization were found in 1954, during a regional reconnaissance geochemical stream sediment survey carried out over large parts of New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula. The regional geology of New Brunswick is shown in Fig. 1. This program, sponsored by Selco Exploration Co. Ltd. of Toronto was conducted by H. Bloom, H.E. Hawkes, J.E. Riddell, and J.S. Webb. At its conclusion in 1955, 30 significant anomalous drainages were identified for follow-up evaluation. A total of 4937 sample sites were occupied. Geochemical reconnaissance using stream sediment sampling was a new technique which had only been field tested the previous year in the Gaspé and the northern coastal area of New Brunswick. Sediments collected from known mineralized drainages were found to leave a train of anomalous heavy metals from 1.6 to 9.7 km (1 to 6 miles) in length. When the exercise was extended to a reconnaissance survey, the previously unknown mineralized prospect at Nash Creek, New Brunswick, was discovered, staked, and later drilled (Hawkes and Bloom, 1956). Although it did not come into production, the discovery left little doubt as to the viability of the method and led to the Selco sponsorship of the program for the following two years.
