Recycled materials are increasingly being used in road construction to supplement natural aggregate derived from crushed stone, sand, and gravel. An understanding of the amount of substitution that is taking place, its economics, and factors affecting the level of substitution is useful in estimating the potential for recycling and in assessing the total supply of aggregate. While U.S. consumption of recycled aggregates from crushed concrete is estimated to have increased 160 percent between 1994 and 1996; it comprised less than 5 percent of total aggregates consumed in 1995. Construction waste supply is regional, and is determined by infrastructure decay and replacement rates. Aggregate recycling rates are greater in urban areas where infrastructure is being replaced, natural aggregate resources are limited, disposal costs are high, or strict environmental regulations prevent disposal. Recycling is expected to increase as construction contractors attempt to save on transportation, disposal, and new material costs. Aggregate producers include recycled material as an option to consumers in order to prolong the life of their reserves and improve their range of products. Recycled aggregates can be a supplement for natural aggregates in selected applications, but their use should be evaluated locally based upon relative cost, quality, and market factors Because aggregate recycling is often affected by local and regional transportation systems, disposal and tipping fees, resource supply, the market for specific products, and municipal support, costs for three representative fixed site operations of different sizes were modeled. Under study conditions, all were found to be profitable, but highly dependent upon local tipping fees and market prices, which can differ significantly by location. Smaller operations were found to have different operational dynamics, often requiring creative marketing or incentives to maintain profitability.

Even in an otherwise care-fully done sampling procedure, reducing subsample weight, or splitting, when the grain size of material is too large commonly generates significant error. Such error can be estimated from the standard deviation of differences between values of PAIRED ASSAYS. Samples from split-ting steps immediately before comminution, and showing a restricted range of grade, generate paired assays. Splitting steps characterized by relative standard deviations exceeding 16% generate nonrepresentative data. Such steps should be redesigned to optimize reliability of assay-dependent studies. A sampling scheme can be graphically characterized, and then redesigned as appropriate, using a SAMPLING NOMOGRAPH. Use of the nomograph avoids continued replication of assays. Generally at a splitting step, excessive error can be reduced by comminuting more material. Unnecessary effort can be mitigated by comminuting less finely and/or by splitting to a smaller weight.

The Mont Klahoyo magnetite deposit is located about 600 km northwest of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. During an exploration period ending in 1977 an international joint venture group investigated the deposit and proved reserves of 670 million tons grading 36% iron. The deposit, occurring at the northeast end of the Baoubly-Kiriao chain of Precambrian iron formations, is associated with amphibolites, pyroxenites and gneisses of the Liberian Shield. At Mont Klahoyo occur two separate iron formations of which the lower member is the ore body. This lower member consists of a highly metamorphosed - banded quartz-magnetite iron formation in which iron silicate bands alternate with beds of quartz-magnetite. mphibolite-pyroxenites and sillimanite-cordierite-garnet gneisses form hanging and footwall rocks. The iron formation has been folded into an elongated overturned "Z" shaped major drag fold with axes trending and plunging approximately northeast. Beds are vertical or dip steeply to the southeast. The ore zone has an average thickness of 130 m and outcrops intermittently over a distance of approximately 5.5 km. Based upon detailed studies of drill cores and the results of ore dressing test work, eight stratigraphic units, identified as K-1 to K-8, are recognizable in the iron formation. Four interbedded units are low grade silicate zones (silicate facies) with the remaining quartz-magnetite units (oxide facies) repre¬senting the important ore zones of the Mont Klahoyo deposit. The ore-bearing "K" units are subdivided further, based upon their specific lithologies, iron content and concentration characteristics, into eleven ore types. The identification of these ore types is considered particularly important to mine planning and flowsheet design. A cap of oxidized materials overlies the primary quartz-magnetite iron formation but no enrichment has occurred. It is proposed that the Mont Kalhoyo iron formations were deposited, possibly chemically, in a volcanic environment as a siliceous iron formation with volcanism providing the primary source of iron and silica. Metamorphism converted the siliceous iron formation to a relatively coarse-grained quartz-magnetite-silicate iron formation.

"INTRODUCTION This paper will discuss the topics in the recently released Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association’s (CEMA) Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, 7th edition, that deal with safety and maintenance. The most effective way to improve conveyor safety is through designing out hazards in the earliest stages of a project. When the safest way to perform maintenance is also the easiest, mechanics will naturally take the obvious and least hazardous approach. IMPORTANCE OF ACCESS Studies have shown that mechanics spend almost one-third of their time accessing the components to be serviced and approximately 25% of all fatal conveyor accidents occur during maintenance1. Chapter 2 of Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials deals with design considerations. In Chapter 2 there are recommendations for access at the various sections of a typical conveyor for cleaning, inspection and maintenance. While, in some cases, providing access will increase the cost of the conveyor system there can be significant paybacks in reduced injuries, faster maintenance and easier cleaning. Piping and Conduit One of the significant recommendations in Chapter 2 for access is to restrict the mounting of piping and conduit to the conveyor structure in the Loading and Discharge zones of a conveyor. Piping and conduit are more permanent fixtures than maintainable components and should be located out of the way of components needing frequent maintenance. If electricians and pipe fitters are given convenient locations to make their runs they will natural use them. Flexible conduit and hoses can be used to connect to components from pipe racks and cable trays which further enhances maintenance. Access for Cleaning Another critical aspect of access is for cleaning. Approximately 33% of all fatal conveyor accidents occur while cleaning spillage and carryback under and around conveyors2. In the loading zone having sufficient height under the conveyor for cleaning increases the cleaning interval and allows for safer cleaning. In the discharge zone having adequate access for belt cleaning installation has a direct effect on the ability to install a proper cleaning system and perform maintenance."

"With the depletion of easily minable coal seams, less favorable reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand. Due to several historical reasons, a large amount of remnant coal was left unrecovered. One such case history occurs with the remnant rectangular stripe coal pillars using partial extraction method at Guandi Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The challenge that the coal mine is facing is that there is an ultra-close coal seam right under it, with an only 0.8 to 1.5 m sandstone dirt band in between the two. The simulation study was carried out to investigate the simultaneous recovery of upper remnant coal pillars while mining the ultra-close lower panel using longwall top coal caving (LTCC). The remnant coal pillar was induced to cave in as top coal in LTCC system. Physical modelling shows that the coal pillars are the abutments of the stress arch structure formed within the overburden strata. The stability of overhanging roof strata highly depends on the stability of the remnant coal pillars. The gob development (roof strata cave-in) is intermittent with the cave-in of these coal pillars and the sandstone dirt band. FLAC3D numerical modelling shows that the multiple seam interaction has a significant influence on mining-induced stress environment for mining of lower panel. The pattern of the stress evolution on the coal pillars with the advance of the lower working face was found. This demonstrates that the stress relief of a remnant coal pillar enhances the caveability of the pillars and sandstone dirt band below them.INTRODUCTIONChina is one of the world’s coal-rich countries. Coal has played a significant role in the growth of China’s economy. Coal reserves have been mined commercially in China for over one hundred years. The demand for coal in China is still going to grow at a relatively high rate (BP Energy Outlook, 2019). Long-term large-scale and intensive coal mining activities have created tension between increased demand and limited resources (Bai et al., 2018). Easily minable coal seams such as sub-horizontal, tabular, and laterally extensive coal seams are being depleted, and therefore the remaining reserves are becoming less favorable. However, in many situations, the coal reserves under adverse conditions have to be mined out to meet the market demand for energy.Due to sedimentary environments and geological conditions, many coal seams are interspersed with sedimentary bands, or partings both within an individual seam and between seams. These bands and partings lead to appearance of ultra-close coal seams, as well as giving rise to considerable variation in their structural and mechanical properties (Ghabraie and Ren, 2016). Difficulties are encountered in the mining of such coal seams. If ultra-close coal seams are mined sequentially, that requires the design of a mining system for each individual coal seam; also, a large number of gateroads have to be excavated, which is not a high-efficiency option. If ultra-close coal seams are mined at a great mining height at once, for instance, using longwall top coal caving—a longwall mining method that is widely used in China for the mining of ultra-thick coal seams—then the location and characteristics of the band would have a significant influence on success of their extraction."

In recent years, there has been a growing realization of the importance of ground water as a national resource and increasing concern that this resource be properly managed and protected from a variety of pervasive practices that endanger it. Aquifers have been adversely affected in every region of the country. In dealing w.ith the underground water program, EPA will have the following objectives: to protect human health, and to protect and conserve an important national resource. In pursuing these objectives, EPA will take economic consequences and other national objectives (e.g., energy) into account. EPA intends to pursue these objectives in full partnership with the States. Generally the States should retain the lead in protecting ground water.

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, commonly known as RCRA, which amends the previous Solid Waste Disposal Act, was signed into law on October 21, 1976. Members of the mining industry began their contacts with EPA in this area two to three years before the Act finally was passed, and that seemed and probably was all to the good. We reviewed and commented upon their studies and in general tried to acquaint them with the peculiarities and the uniqueness of the wastes generated by our industry, of which they were abyssmally ignorant. I suppose we thought that through the bureaucracy we might have some influence upon the provisions of the solid waste legislation that was being bandied about on the hill. Certainly the industry, in general, did very little direct lobbying, as I recall, and there were several reasons for that. For one thing we conceived that the legislation was aimed at the chemical industy and believed that if their people looked after their interests, ours would be safeguarded automatically. Also, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) was heating up at the same time and, in fact, was signed into law on the same day. In addition, a great deal of lobbying activity was required by amendments of the Clean Air Act and Federal Water Pollution Control Act that were being put together in Congress. These were conceived to be of far greater importance to our industry than a bill to control mostly chemical wastes and, in fact, new bills in both areas became law the following year. Finally, the solid waste bill, RCRA, was patched together by committee staffs over one weekend and was reported out by a conference committee rather hurriedly. Some little goodies about mining were almost after-thoughts in this process.

PT Freeport's Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500m long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 ktpd and this will be increasing to 240 ktpd. This amount of falling rock generates high pressures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air up the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation of the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure of the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term solution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

The subject of strata control in mining can be approached from both static or loading concepts or from dynamic or impulsive loading concepts. The fracture process itself appears to be primarily a dynamic process as is the gross creation of fractures through the use of impact, stress wave passage or in more general terms, the use of explosives. This paper presents experimental results which indicate that the understanding of the fracture behavior of rock that has been, established in the open literature is not always appropriate. In particular, the results of this experimental program have shown very interesting differences between the formation of fractures in rock and the formation of fractures in other materials such as metals and plastics which are often used as models for rock behavior studies Fracture patterns and causes of dynamic fracturing in various rock and artificial materials are presented.

Selective Flocculation process development generally involves single mineral flocculation tests to identify the appropriate polymer and experimental conditions for achieving the desired selectivity. Invariably the selectivity predicted on the basis of such tests is not realized when mixed mineral tests are conducted. A systematic experimental investigation revealed that adsorption of the polymer on various substrates is critical to selecting the suitable flocculent. Simultaneously, a mathematical model was developed to predict the overall process efficiency with a given polymer. In this paper, results of these efforts to scientifically design a suitable selective flocculation process are presented.

The past decade has seen remarkable progress by the railroads both in equipment and concepts in the handling of dry bulk. materials. While such shipments have always been an important part of the traffic handled by the railroads I little was done to improve the efficiency of handling or toward attempted optimization of equipment design before 1960. Several developments at about that time turned attention to this important segment of railroad traffic. One was the construction of a successful coal slurry pipe-line. Another was the promise of substantial economy in electric power transmission by ultrahigh voltage systems and finally, came the growing technological and economic feasibility of nuclear fuel electric generating plants. Each of these developments was a threat to the coal traffic of the railroads --the most important single commodity they handled in terms of revenue and tonnage. By the mid-1950's I Southern Railway management had become most concerned with its growing investment in freight car equipment and the declining revenue productivity of the capital employed. Additionally I there was substantial concern with the loss of business and potential losses in the area of the railroad's greatest economic advantage --bulk commodity movements. In 1958 a small team was established to study this problem. They arrived at two conclusions. The first conclusion was that within limits of maximum gross allowable weight on rail the lowest unit net capacity cost of investment came at maximum allowable gross weight per car unit. The second conclusion was that with a high degree of utilization costs per weight unit transported could be reduced to the pOint where

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the stability of the mass flow rates and average pellet size in the different streams of an industrial-scale balling circuit. The variables in this study include water content, drum speed and fresh feed rate. It was found that both the mass flow rates and pellet diameter are greatly disturbed when a change, positive or negative, in any of the variables takes place. For most of these disturbances to be damped don, a period of one hour or so is required. When a disturbance in the feed rate was made, the transient period extended to more than one and half hours (the duration of the experiment). It was observed that there is an interaction between the drum speed and moisture needed for producing an acceptable green ball product. The moisture content of the product pellets was found to be a function of the pellet size, with the larger pellets retaining a higher moisture content.

This research is the result of a geotechnical study carried out in a natural slope in an Open Pit mine in Southern Peru, highlighting earthquakes as an important cause of instability within the case study presented. This leads to analyze the stability of a slope, according to the safety factor and thus consider a future construction in its environment according to the identified requirements. There are known disasters at national and international level that involve human lives because of the lack of analysis of slope stability conditions, which based on the results will allow to control and to take adequate corrective measures. These mass movements are classified whether they are soils or rocks, considering the mechanism and type of rupture, as well as the presence of water, the speed and magnitude of the movement. The movement problems are due to factors of inherent nature and constitute a reason to perform a calculation study to analyze and estimate the safety factor of each of the evaluated cases

The advantages of using vertical pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers in the uranium industry have been known for some time. The advantages of the columns offer include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation and crud formation. This paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also discusses potential advantages of the pulse column in copper solvent extraction.

(ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

A number of improvements in the ventilation system at the Henderson Mine have been made during the past several years. A key to these improvements was the installation of a computerized monitoring and control system. Employees can determine the status of any of hundreds of devices in seconds through the use of this monitoring system. Mine dewatering pumps, the water treatment system, the ore haulage system, electric power usage as well as other devices are controlled and/or monitored. Ventilation parameters which are monitored include air flow volumes and carbon monoxide as well as the status of main surface fans, mine doors, and ventilation raise doors. Main underground fans are also constantly monitored and can be controlled remotely. These underground fans can be programmed to automatically start and stop to follow work schedules, optimizing air quality while reducing power cost. Mine air heating costs have been reduced by replacing an electrical resistance heating system with a direct fired natural gas heating system at the portal of the ore haulage tunnel.

Introduction In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Head losses in mine entries are calculated using Atkinson's Equation. [22H= KPLQ (English) H= KP 3Q (SO (1) 5.2AA] where H = pressure loss, in. of H2O (Pa); K = friction factor, lbf•min2/ft4 (kg/m3); P = perimeter, ft (m); L = airway length, ft (m); Q = airflow quantity, ft3/min (m3/sec); and A = flow cross-sectional area, ft2 (m2) In this equation, the friction factor, K, is an empirical constant that describes the aerodynamic roughness of the airway. Typically, the K-factor for a given airway is determined by measuring the factors H, P, L, Q and A in Equation (1) and calculating K. Tables of friction factors calculated in this way are found in textbooks and handbooks that deal with mine ventilation analysis. Unfortunately, very few K-factors have been measured on longwall faces, and the accuracies of those that have been measured are entirely site specific, because of the wide variety of equipment found on longwalls. The development of a technique for prediction without mine-site measurements of the friction factor for any longwall face, regardless of its configuration, will thus be very useful in the design of ventilation systems for mines in which longwall mining is practiced. Calculation of pressure losses using Atkinson's Equation (1) and empirically determined K-factors provides accurate and useful approximations in cases where the airways have relatively simple cross sections. However, a careful analysis using the principles of fluid mechanics shows that such calculations are based on two assumptions that are not strictly correct when there are obstructions in the airway. The first assumption is that the air velocity distribution in the cross section, particularly around the perimeter, is uniform. This assumption results from the fact that the tabulated K-factor values found in the literature are based on field measurements with uniform conditions. Such uniformity does not exist in longwall airflows. The second common assumption is that the K-factor, and corresponding head loss, is independent of the Reynolds Number (NR) for a given flow. In fact, this assumption is not strictly correct, and is particularly erroneous in the case of irregular protuberances into the airflow, such as those found on a longwall face. The errors arising from the assumptions may be avoided by using K-factors calculated by a newly devised method, described below, which takes into account the fundamental principles of aerodynamic drag analysis. This new technique has two advantages: first, it is flexible enough to model any longwall, regardless of equipment configuration; second, it employs terminology and equations familiar to those who perform mine ventilation analysis, using K-factors, for which ventilation engineers have an intuitive understanding, rather than drag coefficients. To provide guidance for development of a longwall drag model, data were taken on two modern longwalls operating in substantially different conditions. Pressure measurements at Mine B were made with 200-foot (61-m) sections of 1/8-in. (3-mm) diameter plastic tubing, attached to a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Pressure drops were measured in 200-foot increments down the face, and summed to give the drop for the entire face length. This technique was found to produce small, repeated errors because of the number of segments required to span the longwall. At Mine A this problem was avoided by using a single, continuous, plastic tube for the entire face length. The psychrometric properties of the air were measured for both Mines A and B. A calibrated, standard vane-anemometer was used to measure the airflow on both faces. Finally, numerous dimensions were measured on both faces, and face profile drawings were obtained to allow detailed evaluation of the face equipment geometry. From this information, accurate evaluations of the average wetted perimeter and average area of the longwall face airways were made. In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.
