Mine ventilation has been evolving as a separate field of study since the middle of the nineteenth century, and some practitioners might assert that mine ventilation has come of age as a discrete field in the last decade or two. Certainly the extensive literature now available on many facets of the subject, international congresses, the phenomenal upsurge of interest in mine ventilation in the United States of America since the passage of the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and the existence of a virile mine ventilation society in South Africa with its own monthly journal all point in this general direction; on the other hand the lack of a rational design philosophy for ventilating mines suggests that mine ventilation may still be on the threshold of maturity. To generalise, many mines are still ventilated simply to comply with arbitrary statutory regulations, or with some ill- defined notion of reducing the risk of injury associated with the atmospheric environment in mines. Hazards in this category include oxygen deficiency, toxic gases and particulates, pathogenic gases and aerosols, explosive gases and dusts, and extreme climatic conditions. Although many mines are ventilated to abate the risk of a specific injury, there is inevitably a spectrum of latent and patent atmospheric hazards in every underground mine. The writer (Martinson, 1976) has previously drawn attention to the dearth of material on mine ventilation design in textbooks and technical journals, and to the overly simplistic approach sometimes adopted in the limited work published on the subject. The available material undoubtedly contains useful technical data and persuasive views, but seemingly could not be used to demonstrate the rational engineering approach to mine ventilation design advocated in the present paper. The range of papers presented at the 1975 and 1979 Congresses, and the diverse interests and affiliations of delegates, emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of mine ventilation. Easily recognisable topics include: Fluid mechanics Thermodynamics Heat transfer Flames and combustion Aerosol physics Radiation physics Geophysics and geomechanics Occupational diseases Epidemiology Industrial physiology Despite these heterogeneous connections there can be little doubt that mine ventilation is fundamentally an engineering field and not an off-shoot of some other branch of applied science. The distinction is important because mine ventilation has essentially developed as a form of ad hoc trouble- shooting, and in the process mining engineers have relied extensively on the assistance of experts drawn from other fields. Thus historically there has been limited scope for the application of rational design techniques, and personnel enlisted from scientific disciplines may not have had any previous experience in the intricacies of engineering design.

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system, and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This paper addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

During blasting, rock breaks and moves but standard grade control practices do not adjust ore waste boundaries to cater for blast movement. Rock movement resulting from blasts can result in mischaracterization of grade boundaries resulting in ore loss and dilution. Ore loss takes place when ore is mischaracterized as waste and sent to waste dumps, and dilution occurs when waste is mischaracterized as ore and sent for processing. Las Bambas operations of MMG Peru, realized the economic impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution and adjust ore boundaries using limited blast movement measurements. This is a step in the right direction but has limitations for everyday application. This paper discusses the advantages of disadvantages of current blast monitoring techniques and introduces an operational tool to estimate polygon movements for different blast designs and confinement conditions. Blast movement estimates from this new tool have been compared against the estimates from the current tools for several production blasts and the results were quite promising.

INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. The present work describes an investigation of a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of mercury from spent silver oxide button cells. The cell paste was leached in nitric acid to solubilize silver, mercury and zinc. The optimum leaching conditions, in which mercury is entirely converted to Hg2+ ions and, therefore, does not coprecipitate with silver chloride during treatment with potassium chloride solution, were 1.0 M HNO3, 45° C, 1 hour and 200 rpm. After the silver was removed from the solution, mercury was cemented out with zinc powder with an efficiency greater than 99%. In the cementation experiments, the amount of zinc powder, shaking rate, temperature and solution pH were investigated in detail. The mercury recovery (%) increased as the amounts of zinc powder and the temperature were increased. Zinc hydroxide was precipitated from the waste solution by the addition of sodium hydroxide. The Zn(OH)2 precipitate was then converted to zinc oxide. The proposed process is proven to be simple, straightforward and environmentally friendly.

Lime, the versatile chemical is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is made from high calcium or high magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high calcium lime has less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination/Hydration Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 AD. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from scientific perspective. The pro- duction of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 25 to 30 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Particular emphasis has been focused upon energy consumption and fuel efficiency. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the limeflimestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting is a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [ ] While there is nearly universal agreement bout the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in [Fig. 1]. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO, pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Since calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, the natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in calcination rate. Therefore, the suitability of a given limestone as a source material for lime production can be determined only after completion of adequate burn tests designed to evaluate the various limiting factors. When a coal-fired kiln system is considered, the entire process of calcination is made even more complex by the introduction of additional chemical constituents into the calcination environment. The reader is referred to the references for a more detailed description of the complete calcination reaction and the differences inherent between differing kiln systems. In the foregoing discussion it was noted that CO2 is released during the reaction. This release results in a 44% weight loss during the complete calcination of a high calcium limestone, or a 48% weight loss for a highly dolomitic limestone. The trade term for this weight percent loss is loss on ignition, or LOI. This weight loss is frequently used as a measure of the completeness of calcination. Because the calcination reaction is chemically reversible, quicklime or burned lime is frequently referred to a being highly reactive, or unstable. The more stable form of lime, hydrated lime, is commonly preferred and generally specified by the user. Hydrated lime is obtained by adding water to quicklime to produce a dry, fine powder. Quicklime&apos;s affinity for moisture is then satisfied, although it still retains a strong affinity for CO2.

Introduction In the decades since silica gel was first identified in material exuding from cracked concrete, a great deal of research has been conducted regarding the chemical reactions between the alkalies found in portland cement and silica found in aggregates. The reaction is complex and one that is not yet completely predictable, especially from the point of view of developing specifications that are appropriate to all situations. This paper is not intended to be a rigorous review of the research findings but is an attempt to provide a simplified review of the mechanisms of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR), so that one can better understand the implications of the specifications, test results and effects on structures. In addition, the contractual relationships between the aggregate supplier and one of their major clients, the concrete supplier, will be examined with regard to the ASR. ASR basics Silica. Silica (silicon oxide) may exist in naturally occurring aggregates in various forms and in combination with a number of other elements. When the silica is completely crystalline, such as in quartz, it is chemically and mechanically stable. Quartz silica is impermeable and reacts only on the surface of the crystal, where the silicon and oxygen bonds are broken. Because the surface area per unit volume of most quartz is low, the reactivity is also low. Completely amorphous (noncrystalline) silica is, on the other hand, more porous and very reactive. The less "crystalline" the silica is in the aggregate, the more reactive. Silica that has melted and cooled quickly without recrystallizing, creating a glassy material (such as in certain volcanic aggregates), has a very low state of crystallization and will be much more reactive in an alkaline solution. Crystalline silica that has been transformed by heat and pressure may have a large quantity of strain energy stored in the crystal lattice. The presence of this higher energy will make the silica more likely to react. The "strained quartz" found in many metamorphic aggregates means that these aggregates are potentially susceptible to deleterious alkali silica reactivity, although the rate of reaction is typically much slower than with aggregates composed of or containing glassy or amorphous silicas. Another problem may exist with aggregates in which the silica is primarily crystalline. In aggregates such as chert, in which the silica exists as very fine crystals (i.e., crypto- or microcrystalline), the very high surface energies between the crystals contribute to alkali sensitivity. Therefore, the potential reactivity of an aggregate is seen to be a function of both the degree of crystallization of the silica in the aggregate and the amount of energy stored in the crystal structure, whether due to a large quantity of microcrystalline silica, a high strain energy stored in the crystals or some combination of these factors. The surface area per unit volume of the reactive silica will also affect the rate of reaction, because a larger surface area of reactive silica will have more opportunity to react. Obviously, the reactivity of the aggregate is also affected by the silica content. However, in this case, the results are not quite so obvious. A discussion of the effect of silica content will be postponed until after a discussion of the contribution of the cement paste. Paste characteristics. Hydrated portland cement is a very alkaline material with a pore solution pH typically in excess of 12. The alkaline environment of moist concrete provides an ideal place for noncrystalline or cryptocrystalline silica to react. However, not all alkalies are equal in their effects. Calcium compounds react with glassy silica to form calcium silicate hydrate, commonly abbreviated C-S-H a poorly crystalline material that can occur in several forms and chemical compositions. C-S-H was at one time called tobermorite gel, because it was chemically similar to the naturally occurring crystalline mineral tobermorite and because it had a gel-like (noncrystalline) structure when viewed under an optical microscope. The formation of C-S-H is the basis for both portland cement hydration and reaction with, for example, fly ash. C-S-H is relatively stable. Although drying will cause some shrinkage and rewetting will cause some expansion, the volume stability of the C-S-H is very good compared to the volume stability of most alkali silica gels. Alkali silica gels with high sodium contents, for example, are nonstable compared to C-S-H.

"The “Biohydrometallurgical Center for Strategic Elements (BHMZ)” is a cooperation of 13 departments of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg fostering interdisciplinary research along the whole (bio-) hydrometallurgical process chain to extract indium and germanium from sulphide ores. Research comprises methods to (i) bring the respective metal from the source material into aqueous solution and (ii) different approaches to extract pure metal or metal-containing materials from the solution. Within the BHMZ the Department of Underground Mining Methods deals with the design and implementation of an underground testing facility for bacterial in-situ stope leaching in its own “Research and Educational Mine”. The intention is to investigate innovative approaches for leaching technologies by crack initiation due to hydraulic fracturing or water pressure blasting under consideration of leaching kinetics and underground conditions. It is planned to set up two testing units comparing energy input and the metal output of conventional (blasting) as well as one of the innovative technologies. Aim of subproject is to establish an innovative and sustainable method ready for up-scaling. BACKGROUND Metals like copper and zinc mainly occur as sulphide ores in nature. Due to the insolubility of these sulphide minerals the respective metal is commonly extracted by pyrometallurgical processing methods. These methods require several steps of enrichment of concentrates such as flotation and roasting (Figure 1) under extensive energy utilization. Additionally, this arouses the emission of sulphur dioxide gas which can have a negative impact on the environment in form of acid rain, as long it is not caught by sulphuric acid facilities (Schippers et al. 2011). However, to treat the ore on the surface either open pit or underground mining operations are necessary. This implies operation steps from excavating, loading, and conveying/hauling, to dumping with the sub-processes crushing and stashing. Due to the tendency of increasing depth, more complex ores and decreasing ore grades of the mineable deposits as well as increasing energy and environmental costs these conventional mining and processing methods become in general more costly and difficult to apply. Hence, hydrometallurgical processes and especially the suitability of bioleaching as an alternative in-situ method for future mining projects should be examined. Leaching by means of microorganisms is a combination of mining and processing by converting the insoluble metal into an aqueous form. This technology is an economically beneficial and environmentally friendly alternative to pyrometallurgical processing methods especially for primary and secondary low grade ores. Mainly the extraction of copper but also of zinc and lead from sulphide ores is state-of-the-art in surface leaching operations like heap and dump leaching (Figure 1)."

"In this study, multiple methods that include geological surveying, laboratory studies, and numerical modeling have been used to study the deformation characteristics of a “deep inclined rock roadway with weak planes” (DIRRWP). Failure of the DIRRWP was found to be triggered initially by the shearing of the rock near the weak plane. The movement of the failed rock resulted in reduced confinement of the deeper rocks, and causing the failure of the supporting units and the severe deformation of the surrounding rocks. Hence, it is concluded that DIRRWP stability is affected predominantly by rocks near the weak plane. Corresponding control strategies for DIRRWP deformation were proposed: (1) greater support intensity is necessary to maintain the stability of the whole DIRRWP; (2) additional support is needed for rocks near the weak plane to reduce the potential of failure; (3) to increase the bearing capacity of the floor strata, as the floor needs to be supported; and (4) a supplementary support technique should be considered for cases of large deformation. The case study presented here indicates that the proposed control strategies can significantly reduce the potential of failure in rocks near the weak plane, thus preventing severe deformation of the DIRRWP.INTRODUCTIONAs shallow seams are mined out, the cover depths in most Chinese coalmines have become increasingly greater. Deep cover in a coalmine is considered to occur when the cover depth exceeds 800 m (Sun, Chen, and Miao, 2018). The loading and failure behavior of rocks in a deep cover setting are quite different from those in a shallow cover setting owing to the increase in in-situ stress, temperature, and hyperosmosis (Lobanova, 2008; Zhang et al., 2013). For instance, experience shows that bulking and dilating deformation in deep roadways is much greater than that which occurs in shallow roadways (Hou and Yang, 2018; Zhang et al., 2016). In addition, anisotropic behavior and thickness deviation of coal measure rocks, combined with the appearance of weak planes (e.g., faults, joints, and coal cleats) in coal and/or rocks, can significantly affect the stability of an underground roadway (Ghazvinian et al., 2013; Sun, Chen, and Miao, 2018). The presence of weak planes can significantly complicate displacement and stress transmission in nearby rocks. Additionally, tensile, compressive, and/or shearing failure in rocks near weak planes can be easily caused by high in-situ stresses in deep roadways; such failures may lead to further severe deformation of the surrounding rocks, resulting in roof falls and rib spalling (Kamata and Mashimo 2001; Wu, Ohnishi, and Nishiyama, 2004). A typical failure of the so-called “deep inclined rock roadway with weak planes” (DIRRWP) is shown in Figure 1. Severe deformation can be found near the weak plane. In this study, a plane or thin layer of rock/coal parting that can significantly reduce the strength of the surrounding rocks—and thus affect roadway stability—is defined as the weak plane."

Continuous monitoring of carbon monoxide and other fire-related parameters by means of an atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) has been used by the mining industry for early fire detection in underground mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a project to integrate real-time AMS sensor data with NIOSH’s mine fire simulation program, MFIRE 3.0, to simulate and predict the spread of smoke that would provide assistance to mine fire emergency response personnel. Determining the heat release rate of a fire using the monitored sensor data was a critical component of the successful completion of this project. NIOSH researchers developed a direct method to calculate the heat release rate when a fire is within close range of sensors. However, this method is only applicable to the case where a fire occurs in AMS-monitored airways. This paper presents an improved method for determining the fire heat release rate for complicated scenarios where a fire is distant from sensors and airflow splits and merges are present. The method was validated using a fullscale diesel fuel fire test conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division and can help mine operators and safety personnel make informed decisions during a fire emergency.

After location and verification of exploitable mineral resources, mineral development re- quires capital goods, labor, and energy to extract the deposit. In addition, a growing social awareness of the need for a healthy environment re- quires inclusion of environmental burdens to the total costs incurred. This is because mineral development is detrimental to the environment in a number of ways. All mining .operations involve the separation of valuable minerals from the surrounding waste rock, which in turn re- quires permanent disposal of unwanted or un- used materials. Mine overburden, wastes, and tailings are often transferred to peripheral areas where they remain as unsightly features in the natural landscape. Some mine spoils contain harmful or contaminating substances as heavy metal salts or acid forming materials which subsequently are released to the environment. Many types of mining operations handle significant quantities of water during extraction or beneficiation processes. When discharged, the quality of such water often is unsuitable for residential, agricultural, or recreational use. Since mining activity disturbs the natural vegetation in the project area, water may be allowed to transport soil materials into streams, causing erosion and siltation. In particular, surface mining operations disturb the top layers of soils, resulting in losses of productivity for long periods of time. Excavation, transportation, and further processing of large volumes of both ores and waste materials generate substantial quantities of particulate and gaseous emissions, some of which contain metal dusts or compounds of sulfur. Such fugitive and point source emissions can be transported beyond the confines of mineral operations to cause annoyance and damage at more distant locations. Environmental degredation or pollution can be viewed as the alteration of the environment by man through the introduction of materials which represent potential or real hazards to hu- man health, disruption to living resources and ecological systems, impairment to structures or amenity, or interference with socially desired uses of the environment. The significance of environmental degradation is reflected in its effects on a range of receptors, including humans as well as the resources and ecological systems upon which we depend. Pollution also is judged in the social context of damage to environmental structures and amenities. The demand for restoration and maintenance of environmental quality presents the mineral industry with a challenge to successfully man- age discharges and returns to the environment in order to avoid undesirable and harmful consequences. Although I will briefly review the current status of coal slurry pipeline technology, I wish to make it clear that this is not a technical paper. It is intended instead to review the current situation on energy resources and requirements, and the environmental, political and economic considerations that mandate a serious consideration of Slurry pipelines as a viable mode of coal transportation into the Georgia and Florida markets. In order to more fully appreciate our current energy situation, it will be helpful to go back a few years and review the evolution of our so-called energy "problem." It was about two decades ago that the first and only major natural gas transmission pipeline was built into the State of Florida by Florida Gas Company. This line was conceived and implemented during a time when gas was plentiful and cheap, and it appeared at that time that unlimited gas reserves were continually being discovered, thus assuring the availability of a clean, cheap fuel and the ,viability of the pipeline system. One of the major factors justifying the original pipeline construction as well as subsequent expansions was a series of long-term commitments under which Florida Gas transported natural gas owned by electric utilities for use as boiler fuel. Thus for the past 20 years Florida industry, commerce, and domestic fuel requirements have been met either directly or indirectly through clean, cheap natural gas which would not have been otherwise available without the pipeline system.

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in pyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05 to 20.0 g/l S02. Other test variables include iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation and pH.

INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SF A) was used to conduct direct force measurements in dodecylamine hydrogenchloride collector solution between mica surfaces at varying pHs. It has been found that the long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40-0.48 run2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that the maximum flotation recovery of quartz m the range of pH 8.0-10.3 may be attributed to the appearance of long-range hydrophobic force, which in turn can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

Economic evaluations of underground mining operations are made based on the estimated or simulated grades of the block model as the actual values are not known. Depending on how the planning decisions are made, the risk of the operation can be managed and decreased. This research introduces a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model for stope sequencing optimization that considers the uncertainty associated with net present value (NPV) using chance-constrained programming (CCP). The introduced method permits achieving a balance between maximizing NPV and reducing the associated operational risk through transforming the problem into a multiobjective problem, where the objectives are maximizing the NPV and minimizing the risk. This risk is expressed in terms of the standard deviation of project outcomes, taking into account multiple possible scenarios. In a case study, the efficiency of the method was demonstrated as a decision-making tool capable of translating a specified risk or reliability level into a stope sequencing plan.

At the risk of belaboring certain facts which have so often been stated in the past, please bear with me while I set the stage. What are the projected electrical power needs of the nation and of the Northwest during the next 15 to 20 years? No one who has researched the subject over its historical past has reached a substantially different result than the following simple conclusion: electrical power requirements are doubling every decade. There are some who question the necessity of a power company&apos;s need to install capacity every ten years equal to what it has done during its entire previous history; there are even those who would argue that such growth should be arbitrarily curtailed. We are not here today to decide who should have light, heat, jobs and comfort, for we know that a power company must, by law, meet its responsibilities of providing the energy the public expects when the switch is thrown. The Northwest area (the States of Oregon and Washington), for which I speak, has the same case history of electrical power need as does the nation as a whole, and the requirement boils down to roughly an average of a million kilowatts of new capacity each year over the next ten years and we can estimate an average two million kilowatts per year in the 1980&apos;s. This is simple arithmetic, but the problems of meeting this exhausting schedule are a real challenge. The subject to which I address this paper is the role that Western Coal will play in the 6 billion dollar investment in these power generation stations. That 6 billion dollar figure represents today&apos;s dollar value and you may wish to apply your own escalation - frankly, I haven&apos;t the courage.

Discussion by J. Parker Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa(4000 and 7000psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic&apos;? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. Were tests run to find out how that rock responded to the addition of moisture, from sprays or from humid air? Did moisture weaken the rock? Did it cause the rock to expand quickly, thus to induce internal compressive stress? How can the near-vertical cutters, as shown in the photographs, be attributed to primarily horizontal stresses? Did the cutters follow any particular pattern in the development panels, which might be related to a particular stress pattern? For example, did they always appear alongside the stiffest pillar? Or always along the northwest rib? Was there any evidence of the pillars and entries "rotating" under the influence of differential horizontal stresses? How much did the entries and pillars rotate as the longwall face approached and passed? After rooffalls, did the openings assume shapes which would indicate a preferred shape in that stressfield and geology? Did crosscuts always survive without damage, as shown in the sketch?

Recruitment and activation of phagocytic cells after inhalation of occupational dusts has been implicated in the development of pulmonary inflammation, fibrosis, or emphysema. Plateletactivating factor has been described recently as a potent inflammatory agent. The objective of the present study was to investigate if platelet-activating factor might play a role in the inflammatory response of the lung to occupational dusts. In vitro exposure of alveolar macrophages to cotton dust (4 mg/ml), silica (10 mg/ml), or coal dust (10 mg/ml) results in the release of picomole levels of platelet-activating factor with a potency of cotton dust > silica > coal dust. Time course studies indicate that platelet-activating factor release from alveolar macrophages is maximal approximately 10 minutes after in vitro exposure to silica. In vitro, platelet-activating factor is a direct stimulant of polymorphonuclear leukocytes increasing chemiluminescence 2.3 ± 0.3 fold above control. The maximal response occurs in the dose range of 10-10 to 10-7M platelet activating factor. In addition, plateletactivating factor potentiates the response of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to a second stimulant; i.e., chemiluminescence generated from polymorphonuclear leukocytes exposed to plateletactivating factor (10-9M) plus chemotactic peptide (FMLP, 10-9M) is 88 ± 22% greater than the sum of the separate effects of these stimulants. In contrast, platelet-activating factor is not a direct stimulant of alveolar macrophages in vitro, having no stimulatory effect on chemiluminescence or superoxide anion release even at levels of 10-6 to 10-5M platelet-activating factor. However, platelet-activating factor (10-5M) does potentiate zymosan-stimulated activation of chemiluminescence and superoxide release from alveolar macrophages by 117 ± 56% and 30 ± 4%, respectively. In conclusion, these data indicate that exposure of the lung to occupational dusts results in the release of platelet-activating factor which may activate polymorphonuclear leukocytes and potentiate the responsiveness of alveolar macrophages to dust. The net result would be pulmonary inflammation and hypersecretion of reactive species by pulmonary phagocytes which could lead to tissue damage and pulmonary disease.

However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.
