Caterpillar unveiled a new dozer, the new Cat D10T2 dozer, that builds on the success the company has had with its D10T model. The newest version of the dozer includes refinements to its power train, automated controls and structures. The result, the company said, is high productivity with superior fuel efficiency, reliable operation with long-lived structures, as well as enhanced access for service technicians and operators. The D10T2 uses the latest load-sensing hydraulics technology combined with Cat advanced engine controls to maximize the amount of material moved for every drop of fuel burned. Improved filtration protects the fuel system, hydraulic system and power train oil system to help ensure high reliability and minimal machine downtime. Refined large structures, such as redesigned track roller frames, deliver longer service before rebuilds. Improved access and egress features enhance safety and productivity of technicians and operators, and optional powered access systems and platforms enable configuring the D10T2 for the site. Caterpillar offers the D10T2 with two variations of the Cat C27 engine with ACERT Technology. One version is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final certified, and the other is capable of achieving emission levels equivalent to EPA Tier 2 standards. Both engine configurations produce net power of 447 kW (600 hp) in forward gears and 538 kW (722 hp) in reverse gears. The engine controller automatically adjusts power output based on the direction of travel. With the new system, the D10T2 has about 20 percent more power in reverse compared to its predecessor model. The result is faster cycle times and greater productivity in certain applications. The D10T2 is suited for a variety of applications including mining, heavy construction and bulk materials handling.

The Porters Creek clay is mined for its absorbent properties. The formation is part of the Upper Mississippi embayment and is recognized in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and southeast Missouri. Major minerals in order of abundance are Montmorillonite, Quartz, Illite, Kaolinite, and Chlorite. Mining consists of open pit operation utilizing track loaders or scraper. The clay is dried or hardened in rotary kilns and crushed to size by roll crushers. The clay granules are sized and air classified prior to storage for shipment or packaging. Granules are sold for pet absorbents, oil absorbents, anti-skid material, fertilizer, and pesticide carriers.

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. The leaching of gold and silver by ammonium thiosulfate solutions in the presence of copper has been actively studied in recent years. Newmont Gold Company has successfully tested the ammonium thiosulfate for gold extraction following biooxidation pretreatment of low grade refractory carbonaceous/sulfidic ores. In this paper, the chemistry of the copper catalyzed leaching process is reviewed. Factors affecting both the leaching reactions and the stability of the lixiviants are reviewed and discussed from a solution chemistry perspective.

It has been 2-1/2 years since the Congress passed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL95-87) the Office of Surface Mining every deadline specified in the Act. Hopefully the Congress will begin to realize that specifying unrealistic deadlines does not accomplish the end desire of legislation any sooner -- it only adds to the confusion, and actually hinders orderly, efficient progress. OSM has been sued by all categories of involved parties -- environmental activitist organizations, the states, and the coal operators. This situation has resulted for two reasons: (1) insufficient time was allotted by the Congress to properly develop the regulations and program, and (2) OSM?s philosophy that it must dictate every detail of reclamation operations from Washington, even though many of its people are inexperienced with coal mining. These law- suits are now demonstrating their value. OSM is showing signs of "pulling-in-its horns" and, hopefully, will approach the revised regulations in a more realistic fasion.

Recent investigations on fine grinding with jet mill miprototypes of original design, constructed at the DIMM and Centro Studi of the National Research Council at Cagliari University, have led to the realization of a third generation micronizer characterized by large capacity and high efficiency. The new model and its distinctive features are described here and the results are presented of grinding tests on typical, high grade Sardinian minerals used for quality products. The operating principles of the jet mill are described in relation to the mechanico-elastic properties of the minerals treated. In particular the efficacy of the comminution process is demonstrated in terms of both solid treated and of impact, attrition and shearing forces generated in the micronizer. Particle size distribution of the finished products are reported, that satisfy the most stringent market specifications for the different minerals, as well as energy consumptions. The alternative operating options for solving particular grinding problems and minimizing energy consumption are discussed. Lastly, the main developments of the jet mill for a possible application at industrial scale are suggested.

Dealing with a trend in inverse distance estimation, IWD, is presented. A measurement is proposed to be consisted of a portion due to a mean and a portion due to a residual. The procedure consists of de-trending the measurement via a linear or nonlinear regression. Residuals are computed, and IWD parameter estimation is conducted on the residuals. Estimation at un-sampled points is then computed by estimating the mean and adding on the estimate of the IWD on the residual. A possible BOXCOX transform is also proposed.

A booster fan is an underground fan installed in series with a main surface fan and used to boost the air pressure of the ventilation air passing through it. To accomplish this objective, the fan is installed in a permanent stopping and equipped with airlock doors, a monitoring system, and interlocking devices between main and booster fan controls. The stopping and doors are used to prevent flow recirculation, and the monitors to ensure safe operation of the fan. A booster fan, properly sized and sited, can be used to create safe work conditions and allow the extraction of minerals from areas that would otherwise be uneconomic to mine. In deep and large mines with heavy emissions of air contaminants, the required quantities of air can only be supplied by using high pressure fans. These fans will inevitably induce significant losses of fresh airflow through the stoppings and doors. For well defined ventilation circuits, booster fans can be used to decrease the main fan pressures and reduce the leakage flows. However, this will require a good understanding of the correct ventilation practice, from planning to operation and maintenance of booster fans. The objective of this study is to investigate the conditions under which booster fans can be used safely and efficiently in underground coal mines. Specifically, the study is directed at (1) collecting reliable information on airway resistances and flow requirements from two large U.S coal mines, (2) collecting fan performance data from one or more existing coal mine where booster fans are used regularly, (3) monitoring the performance of booster fans in a laboratory model and an experimental mine, (4) developing a booster fan selection method to assist the ventilation engineer at the planning stage, and (5) training six M.S. or Ph.D. graduate students in advanced mine ventilation.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and response of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may be encountered in underground mine fires, underground mine explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, Industry, Labor and State Government Personnel. The program is extremely versatile and is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. It gives the participants the opportunity to experience some of the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency in a controlled environment without having to be involved in one. Past participants have indicated that this training has better prepared them in actual emergency situations through increased awareness and advanced preparation of plans and resources. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory, which simulates a coal mine and metal/nonmetal mine, was built to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility has been included in the MERD Program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD participants in advanced mine emergency operations. This paper presents an overview of the MERD program.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium. In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

The Crandon massive sulfide deposit Forest County, Wisconsin, was discovered by Exxon Minerals Company, U.S.A., in July 1975. Announced estimated in-place reserves are 62 M metric tons (70 million short tons), grading about 5% zinc and 1% copper. The reserves are evenly divided between massive sulfide are and stringer sulfide ore. The sulfide body is associated with Precambrian felsic pyroclastic rocks, and it is overlain by intermediate volcanic rocks and their derived sedimentary rocks. These rocks were subjected to greenschist facies metamorphism and were tilted to a near-vertical attitude. Geologic observations indicate a submarine-volcanic-exhalative origin for this deposit.

As shown in former publications there are problems in load sharing of backstops in multiple drives of conveyors. Therefore, detailed calculation methods and design recommendations are required. In this paper various designs of load sharing methods are described and a dynamic torque calculation method will be presented. With this method the loadsharing properties for low and high speed backstops are calculated and compared. These properties depend on the spring characteristic of the drive train between backstop and load. Of the various critics of federal energy and minerals policy we are hearing these days--and they are legion--few make their points more vividly than our fellow SME member and eloquent spokesman for the mineral industry. Mr. Eugene Guccione. In a moment of comparative mellowness. Mr. Guccione recently characterized Washington's time-honored legislative and bureaucratic machinery as a case of "...scientific illiterates asking the incompetents to do the unnecessary." I hope the prevailing industry view of government is not quite that harsh, and yet one cannot deny that government intervention is indeed pressing in on the mineral industry with increasing force. What is happening today in Washington and in state capitols will have enormous impact--both short and long term--on the future of coal and mineral production in the United States. Symptoms of this trend are everywhere. In the first place, there is a sentiment, widely held and still spreading, that the government must become involved-- that no matter what the problem, the solution lies in more government intervention. Free enterprise versus statist, reflex reaction organizations. When it cones to regulation in the resource field, there is too often a tendency to start out by assuming guilt on the part of the mineral industry. This can lead to laws governing mineral recovery that are more punitive than constructive...laws drawn up with little research into the scientific or economic considerations involved.

Exploration for mineral deposits in the western United States is increasing annually, and the data generated by this effort are increasingly complex, diverse, and abundant. It is obvious that to make full use of this data base, which is both private and public, the technology of the computer must be involved. To lay out the framework for discussion of the particular uses of computers in all steps of exploration, this chapter will discuss the various approaches to the reconnaissance program which might be considered, the types of data to be acquired, the interpretation of these data, and the generation of recommendations based on this interpretation. Where possible, some of those areas where computer technology is now used will be pointed out. The discussion will cover the extent to which the computer is now utilized in those areas or where it should be brought into the program to aid in these activities. However, this chapter will not present an exhaustive evaluation of this technology, but will stress the exploration job and its requirements, so that subsequent discussion of the technology itself can be placed in perspective.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have now been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting took over 5 years to obtain all authorizations for this operation. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

"The use of composite linings, consisting of permanent sprayed primary and secondary linings with a sandwiched spray applied waterproofing membrane is expected to improve efficiency and reduce lining thickness, but it also brings complex primary-secondary lining interaction. This issue is further complicated by the uncertainty regarding the long-term behavior and parameters of the sprayed concrete–sprayed membrane interface.This paper aims to address this issue by presentation of a series of numerical analyses of a typical shallow SCL tunnel in soft ground with a range of design assumptions on the interface behavior: (1) compression only; (2) compression and tension; and (3) compression, tension, and shear.The results demonstrate that the assumed interface behavior has a significant impact on the primary-secondary lining interactions. A design approach of ignoring the tension and shear bond at the interface may not be conservative particularly for serviceability. This paper explains the rationale behind these conclusions and discusses the implications for design.INTRODUCTIONSprayed Concrete Tunnel Lining SystemsSprayed concrete linings (SCL) have been used in conventional tunneling for decades. However, details of SCL systems may differ to a large extent depending on ground conditions and specific tunneling methodologies.In hard rock conditions, for example, drill and blast excavation is typically supported by rock bolts and sprayed concrete (NGI 2014). Such tunnels are usually designed fully drained and the above-mentioned support elements considered permanent without the need for a further inner liner. Therefore, there is no structural interaction between separate lining shells to consider.In conventional tunneling in the European Alps, a double shell lining is typically utilized, consisting of an outer (primary) sprayed concrete lining and an inner (secondary) cast-in-place concrete lining, separated by a waterproofing system. The primary lining normally includes rock bolts and may include other support elements. The waterproofing system is usually based on a plastic membrane and a geotextile fleece. The tunnel may be designed fully or partially drained or fully undrained. Although there are two structural lining shells interacting, investigation of such interaction is generally irrelevant to designers because the primary lining is considered only temporary (fully sacrificial in the long term). An overview of reasons for this assumption is given, for example, by Lemke (2014). The secondary lining is designed to resist all foreseeable loads on the tunnel. The primary lining may, in reality, interact structurally with the secondary lining during the life span of the tunnel. However, since the secondary lining design must cover all possible (extreme) scenarios, investigation of such interaction does not bring any value to the design."

This project took a watershed approach in the evaluation of water-quality impacts from past mining activities and current restoration projects in the Bear Butte Creek basin, a small and well-defined drainage in a heavily mined area of the northern Black Hills. The basin contains numerous inactive and abandoned mines, as well as a heap-leach surface gold mine. Bear Butte Creek normally loses all of its discharge to sinkholes in the Madison Limestone aquifer. Thus, it can affect the water quality of this regionally important water resource. Water-quality data were analyzed, stream surveys were conducted and two abandoned-mine restoration projects were monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the watershed approach and to identify practical remediation techniques that could be applied to other watersheds. A geographic information system (GIS) was developed to organize information on stream quality, abandoned mine locations, and other geologic and hydrologic data. The watershed approach toward assessing and reclaiming abandoned mines appears to be effective when compared to a point-source approach that might improve water quality at specific sites but not result in significant overall improvement to the watershed because of adjacent sources.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.
