The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined utilizing underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GMbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gaga probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 as thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

In 1980, a caravan of representatives of Japanese trading companies debarked on the shores of the United States bearing gifts of watches, electronic games, and radios. In early 1983, we find in a parking lot of a major U.S. coal company, a haggard general manager of marketing returning to the Orient with a box under his arm of trinkets of his own; cross pens with company logos, alarm clocks, etc. The tables have turned, but our fellow sitting in a jet plane over the Pacific Ocean had only to heed the warning of the famous 19th Century poet well familiar with the ways of the Far East. Kipling said; "And the End of the Fight is a tombstone white and with the name of the late deceased, And the epitaph drear, a fool lies here who tried to hustle the East."

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more efficient and effective use of rock dust. A prototype, flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed in line between the ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over a period of three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess the changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to the operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and were normalized per foot of advance by the continuous miner. Results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by over 91% when operating the scrubber. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced over 342 million tons of coal [EIA 2013]. During the cutting, crushing, and transport of this coal, dust is generated and can be entrained in the air ventilating the mine. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.400-1 (30 CFR§ 75.400-1) defines float coal dust as particles of coal that can pass a No. 200 sieve. These coal particles can be carried by the ventilating air into return entries before settling onto mine surfaces [NIOSH 2006]. If this float coal dust becomes re-entrained into the airstream, it can propagate an explosion throughout mine workings [Harris et al. 2010]. Application of rock dust in underground coal mines is required by Federal regulation as a means of preventing the propagation of explosions by float coal dust. In order to meet Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.403 (30 CFR § 75.403), 80% incombustible content must be maintained in the composition of dust deposited in mine entries [76 Fed. Reg. 35968 (2011)]. This fraction of incombustible content is increased if elevated levels of methane are present. In order to maintain the required incombustible content, frequent or constant application of rock dust is undertaken by mine operators. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.2 (30 CFR § 75.2) defines the properties of the rock dust that must be used by mine operators."

The Mount Isa Rocky Paste Fill (RPF) was one of the five fill options investigated for the Enterprise Mine filling between June 1996 and September 1996. Co-disposal of deslimed cemented tailings (CHF) and suitably graded rockfill (RF) in certain ratios produced the rocky paste fill. The RPF behaved like a cohesive paste with very high proportion of rockfill in the mix. Several large-scale mixing trials and drop tests proved that the rocky pastefill results in a homogeneous fill mass after placement. Segregation of RF was a common problem with MIM's traditional cemented rock fill (CRF), which is a combination of CHF and RF. The segregation was eliminated and a non-segregating paste like fill was created by optimising the particle size distribution of RF, and combining the RF and the CHF in optimum ratios. In rocky pastefill, the excess water in the cemented deslimed tailings slurry is taken up by the rockfill as the surface moisture on the rockfill particles and also as pore water between the particles. This results in thickening of the CHF, and the resultant mix is a non-segregating cohesive paste, which can easily spread to any horizontal distance inside a stope at a very low surface angle. The rocky pastefill releases no free water and relatively more pervious than the standard CHF due to rockfill component. With an average cement addition of 1.5 to 2% the rocky pastefill can develop higher strengths over 1Mpa. The rocky paste fill is applicable in many situations and can accommodate a variety of coarser materials that would be available in different mine sites. This paper present the research work and the experience associated with the rocky paste fill, and gives clear design principles for any potential users.

When I wrote the Railroad portion of "Mining Engineering" magazines 94 Powder River Basin (PRB) Coal Article I described to you some definite destinations the Railroads had in mind. As with many destinations, the ones I wrote of turned out to be merely stops on the way to places that we have yet to reach. Somewhere along the way we discovered that making it better is a continuous process not just something that you can do in phases I, II, III, & IV. We always knew this I suspect, but perhaps not at the awareness level that exists in RR environments in 1997. The purpose of this article is to update the 94 article, which I could do very quickly. Everything I told you we were going to do in 94 is done, end of story! But in addition to making it a very short article it would not be telling you the things RR has done beyond what we were planning in 94 and for the future.

The commissioning of a distributed digital control system for the grinding circuit at Cuajone was completed by mid-August 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability, and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console improved mill through- put significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the milk and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses the strategy development and the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system.

Utility coal specifications usually contain a requirement for a maximum moisture content in order to prevent coal handling problems and to minimize evaporative losses in the boiler. As most coal cleaning processes are water-based, dewatering and sometimes thermal drying steps are required to meet moisture specifications. Screens are often used for dewatering, with centrifuges and filters used to further reduce moisture in many cases. Algorithms to predict the performance of commercial dewatering devices were developed for the Coal Cleaning Simulator running under Aspen Plus? during a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. These algorithms include calculations for size degradation in the devices and fines loss to effluents, where appropriate, and a calculation for moisture content of the product based on particle size and specific gravity distribution. This paper discusses the algorithm for coarse and fine coal centrifuges and gives comparisons between predicted moisture and solids loss and published moisture and solids loss values for various particle size ranges.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential for use of UAVs in underground mines and present a prototype design for a novel autorotating UAV platform for underground 3D data collection. The mining industry has recently shown increased interest in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist in everyday operations [20, 11, 4]. Above ground, small UAVs are in some cases a more efficient, inexpensive, and safer alternative to manned aircrafts currently used for photography, inspection and security [6, 10]. For example, attaching camera, infrared and LiDAR payloads, UAVs can provide a low-cost method of obtaining highly accurate 3D photogrammetric data and aerial photography. UAVs are now commonly used in open pit mining operations for applications that include stockpile surveying, 3D pit modelling, facilities management, accident reporting, progress monitoring, and environmental assessment [11]. There are numerous companies offering UAV services for mining applications; e.g., UAV Geomatics, Leica Geosystems, Sky Futures, SenseFly and FlyTerra, to name just a few. Common services include stockpile and open pit volume computations, environmental assessment, aerial mapping and photogrammetry. Although the aforementioned services are thosemost commonly provided by UAV surveying companies, they may also add value to other daily mining operations. For instance, SenseFly offers pre and post-blast monitoring in order to identify the presence of misfires and wall damage. This data can also be used to reconcile the blast results with expected results. GEM Systems offers a UAV equipped with a magnetometer for mineral exploration surveys. Companies such as Barrick have even used UAVs for solids modelling at tailings dams and stability monitoring [11]. UAVs in mining have so far been mostly limited to surface applications. Harsh underground environments pose many obstacles for flying UAVs. The confined space, dampness, reduced visibility, air movement, and lack of control signal propagation hinders most operators from being able to fly a drone underground. It may be that truly practical uses for UAVs underground will require either autonomous or semi-autonomous flight capabilities. Although there are many difficulties with flying underground, the potential benefits from a working system could greatly improve mining operations. The potential benefits of deploying UAV platforms underground include access to unreachable and dangerous locations and removing personnel from unsafe situations. These benefits have the potential to greatly improve mine monitoring and mine safety. Research has shown that current UAV technologies exist that allow for autonomous indoor flight. Extensive research has been done to develop UAV systems that are capable of performing on-board simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), which can allow them to navigate and map a foreign environment autonomously [5, 7, 1, 13]. Grzonka [7] successfully used an open hardware quadrotor to autonomously navigate and map an office building. The research outlines the localization, mapping, path planning, height estimation and control of the autonomous quadrotor. Other research has been done that exploits autonomous UAVs for search and rescue. Kassecker [9] proposed a software and hardware framework for a quadrotor capable of indoor and outdoor urban search and rescue and Rudol [19] developed a system for human body detection and geolocalization using an autonomous UAV.The use of autonomous UAVs in search and rescue has the potential to improve situational awareness and surveillance for a rescue team. Similar research has been done that uses autonomous UAVs for indoor exploration. Pravitra [15] outlined a strategy for autonomous exploration of miniature air vehicles (MAVs) within indoor environments and Rudol [19] developed a method for using an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a UAV for cooperative indoor exploration. Geologic mapping techniques at the Bingham Mine have evolved as rapidly expanding applications of geological data have caused new methods to be utilized. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with transit or plane table. Currently a photogrammetric map, on the scale of 1-inch equals 200-feet, is prepared semi-annually and continuously updated to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material daily. Larger scale bases for specific problems, such as areas having unstable slopes, are prepared by use of aerial and terrestial photography and photo mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application enable fast processing of the data. Application of geology at the Bingham Mine has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting are a few of the problems which require the collection and application of geologic data.

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. Complete parti¬cle-size analysis to show the distribution is essential for most compari¬sons and calculations. Particle-Size Equations. A number of equations have been pro¬posed to correlate the quantity of a particulate material with its parti¬cle size to obtain a distribution relationship. Mining activity around the world has increased significantly to meet stepped-up demand for various metals [1]. Apart from the target minerals, mining also generates huge amounts of unwanted minerals that exit the mines as overburden. Due to the active mining activity, high-grade mineral resources are being depleted, leaving inferior-quality ores [2]. The mining of low-grade ores further increases the amount of overburden/waste per ton of metal equivalent of ore mined. Currently, overburden and other mine waste is most commonly used in the construction industry and as feedstock for making cement and concrete, but the overburden can also be used as a source of valuable minerals and metals [3].

Four counties in Indiana--LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland--have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or are near high population areas and have no surface-minable limestone de- posits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Minable seams suitable for aggregate are 120 to 150 meters (400 to 500 feet) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 meters (300 feet) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 meters (2,000 feet) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

The Bureau of Mines demonstrated ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate on a continuous bench-scale basis. Leaching was performed at 95° C and with a contact time of 15 min. The ferric chloride leaching solution was continuously fed to a leaching tank at a constant rate for periods up to 45 h. In each test a constant redox potential was maintained in the slurry exiting the leaching tank by controlling the concentrate feed rate. In the 45-h test, lead extraction exceeded 99.5 pct, and the lead chloride produced was 99.97 pct pure.

The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

Water is a necessary part of our environment. It is a biological necessity, but more than that, it is a necessary part of our life style. Those of us who live in the north woods expect water to be part of the scene. There are few natives of this region who would be content to eliminate the streams, the lakes, the marshes, or our forests. Throughout the world, water has been so much a part of man's environment and man's adaptation to life has been so closely tied to water that our way of life and ways of accomplishing our work include water as an essential tool. The production of taconite is an example of our dependence on water. Other methods could have been developed to process taconite ore but the process methods chosen utilize water. Water is used for grinding and separation and for trans- porting the ore from one part of the process to another and for dust control. A typical large plant producing 10 million tons of taconite pellets per year will have on the order of 130,000 gallons per minute (8.202 m 3/51 of water in circulation in the plant. About 120,000 gal. per min. (7.571 m 31s) will pass to tailing thickeners where 110,000 gal. per min. (6.940 m 31s) is separated from tailing and returned to the process. About 15,000 gal. per min. (.9464 m 31s) goes with thickened tailing to tailing basin. My point is that there are great volumes of water in motion in a taconite plant,

Once mining compromises the stability of a rock mass, the dangerous task of roof bolting begins. Many attempts have been made to automate this process, but there are still many refinements that need to be made. In the past, roof bolting modules were designed around the abilities of a human operator. Currently, researchers are taking a new approach that focuses on designing modules that can utilize bolting methods that are easily automated. A non-rotating anchor that is locked into position by a linear force (as opposed to a rotational force) was designed by researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Once the bolt is secured in the bolt-hole by the anchor, the bolt is tensioned and a collet is used to secure the other end of the bolt. This process replaces the traditional bolt-nut fastening method. This program is part of an effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to automate the coal mining process.

The launch of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is one of the most challenging activity parts of the construction of a tunnel. Challenges are coming from limited space available, learning curve, concurrence of other activities and in some cases from the geological conditions. Launching a TBM is an extraordinary and complicated operation requiring a great level of planning. The Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM named “Chris” was successfully launched for the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project in Washington, DC. Due to space and time constraints, the 8-meter diameter TBM was launched from a single 20-meter diameter shaft, with a 30-meter-long tail tunnel by means of umbilical connections. This paper presents the steps followed during the TBM assembly and launching to complete the excavation of the initial drive of the tunnel maintaining high level of efficiency and quality despite the space constraints. Specifically, it focuses on the methods and phases used to extract the excavated material (muck) from the TBM and from the tunnel, to supply consumables, precast rings and backfill grout. The paper presents results in terms of productivity, lesson learned and possible alternatives to be considered in similar conditions.
