The existing Central City Tunnel was built primarily in the 1930s with a small portion as old as the 1880s. It conveys stormwater in downtown Minneapolis. It is a 4,400-ft long tunnel located 80 feet underground. The Central City Tunnel has experienced surcharging and surface overflows during heavy rainfall events. This paper presents the details of tunnel and shaft design for the new Central City Parallel Tunnel to mitigate the overflows. The design considered hydraulics and geotechnical engineering for the structural geologic conditions including the weak Saint Peter Sandstone and overlying strong Platteville Limestone. Ground conditions resulted in tunnel designs including large flat-back box tunnels and unique cathedral-shaped tunnel sections.

Service vehicles, often called support vehicles or auxiliary vehicles, are used in secondary functions to support production activities such as loading, drilling, and timbering. Probably the most common support vehicles are the personnel carriers used to move miners to and from work areas. Utility designs are used to transport supplies and various less mobile equipment. Specific application designs are used for special work such as explosives transportation and loading, equipment maintenance, and equipment lubrication. PERSONNEL CARRIERS Personnel carriers are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. Some are two-wheel drive, though most are four-wheel drive. Smaller versions carry at least two men and usually have sufficient capacity to carry a small payload of supplies or equip¬ment. The American Motor's 05 Jeep, equipped with an optional diesel engine, has been adapted successfully for this light duty. Larger personnel carriers with ca¬pacities of 12 to 20 or more men currently are available, as shown in Fig. 1. The designs often are customized to the operating characteristics of each mine. All meet the latest federal requirements for rollover protection, emergency brake systems, etc. UTILITY VEHICLES Utility vehicles are adaptable to numerous duties. Probably the most common are ordinary haulers with a flat bed or low-sided box. They are used for hauling supplies and equipment from one point to another. Some occasionally are used for towing and may pull one or more trailers. Fig. 2 shows a typical utility truck. SPECIAL-APPLICATION VEHICLES Special-application vehicles are possibly the most important of all support types since these vehicles di¬rectly support and maintain production equipment. Such vehicles are available in a wide variety of sizes, mechanical functions, and operating specifications. Most versions are four-wheel drive and articulated. Among the more common vehicles are explosive haulers and loaders, mechanic's trucks, lubrication trucks (Fig. 3), and special carriers. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Development Utility haulers are essential in trackless operations to bring supplies to advancing headings. Some utility haulers may be dedicated to bringing in steel sets and may be equipped with boom lifts to unload heavy sup¬ports or even place them as required. A rockbolt hauler may have a boom-mounted operator's basket which can be used for bolt installation or inspection. Various mechanic's trucks and pipe trucks service the heading to keep power, air, water, and ventilation at the face and to keep face equipment at maximum utilization. Production Production operations require a variety of support equipment. Because of the larger crew size brought about by the addition of the production force, personnel carriers play a greater role. Correspondingly, steel¬support hauling equipment and bolting trucks usually see limited application. PRODUCTION UNITS Capacity Personnel carriers are available to carry almost any number of people desired. Likewise, other types of carriers or haulers can and are built to fit specific re¬quirements. Physical size, capacity, and operating char¬acteristics can be varied to fit any size of opening and operating condition. Generally, articulated models offer greater maneuverability than straight frame-axle steer designs. Most vehicles of this type are lower in power than production units, generally under 74.6 kW (100 hp). Operating performance still compares favorably to that of production equipment, i.e., the support vehicles can travel at equivalent speeds on the various mine gradients. Manpower Auxiliary vehicles should require only a single opera¬tor. Specific application vehicles may require more than one person. For example, ventilation trucks usually require a crew of two where pipe must be installed.

Introduction On the banks of the Columbia River, about halfway between Seattle and Spokane, sits Wenatchee, WA. It calls itself "the apple capital of the world." And it has a gold mining history that dates back to the 1880s. It was just outside Wenatchee - three blocks outside, to be exact-that Asamera recently dedicated its $60 million Cannon underground gold mine. At full production, it is estimated the Cannon mine will yield between 5 and 5.6 t/a (160,000 and 180,000 oz per year) of gold. That would make Cannon the largest North American underground gold mine to be brought into production this year. Cannon should also be among the top 10 of all North American gold producers. Asamera officials project Cannon's operating costs at about $4.8019 ($150 per oz). At that rate, the mine should also be one of the lower cost and most profitable gold mining operations in North America. One reason for low operating costs is low electric power costs. The Cannon operation will be paying about 2.5 cents per kWh for hydroelectric power supplied by the Bonneville Power Authority. Proven and probable ore reserves at Cannon are in excess of 4.7 Mt (5.2 million st). Reserve grades average 7.29 g/t (0.21 oz per st) of gold in three ore zones, in order of discovery - B, B West, and B North. The ore bodies could have been mined by open-pit methods. But underground mining was chosen for environmental reasons. In addition, the rich B North ore body extends beneath a nearby horse stable and arena. The Cannon mine area comprises some 20 km2 (5000 acres) in Chelan County. The mine site is located at the 305 m (1000 ft) elevation in Dry Gulch at the base of the Cascade Mountains. The initial estimate of mine life for the Cannon operation is eight years, depending on gold prices. But Asamera officials believe the Wenatchee area has excellent potential for future gold discoveries. Asamera, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, owns 51% of the Cannon property, through its wholly-owned Asamera Minerals (US). Breakwater Resources Ltd. of Vancouver, British Columbia owns 49% of the operation. The Cannon mine is named in honor of longtime Asamera, Inc. executive and current company director, geologist Donald G. Can¬non. It was he who first brought the Wenatchee property to Asamera's attention and urged the company to pursue it. Asamera is a major explorer and producer of oil and gas. Its Cannon operation is the largest and most significant to date in its mining division, according to Rob¬ert G. Welty. He is Asamera's chairman and chief executive officer. It should be noted there was an element of serendipity involved in Cannon's development. The development program be¬gan when geologist Cannon visited the Wenatchee area. He was visit¬ing old mining districts. He liked what he saw. The Cannon property was eventually optioned for ex¬ploration, including a modest drilling program.

Underground coal mining machinery utilizes portable electric sables, "trailing cables." to obtain power from load centers or distribution boxes. Cables are frequently damaged since mobile equipment, poor lighting, and restricted space are inherent to coal mining operations. Normally, the damage is repaired by splicing--the joining of one or more severed conductors and replacing insulation and jacket. Figure 1 illustrates a typical single conductor splice. Although the repair seems simple, difficulty of the splicing process is exemplified by the many safety hazards and frequent production delays that result from defective splices. Forty-two cable splice related injuries were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, 17 splices related fires were reported in the three year period prior to December 1972. Assuming the damaged area is quickly located, an average splice time for a two conductor cable is twenty minutes. Some operators estimate this delay is incurred once per day per operating section. If one ton per minute is averaged throughout the shift, each unit could loose 4800 tons per year from splice delays. An estimated cost for materials and labor to make a splice is $20. The expenditure could result in a $4800 annual cost per section. The estimated expense does not include wages of other personnel waiting for the repair to be completed. Nevertheless, labor and materials cost is minor compared to the income lost from decreased production.

The significant growth of the world population and its demand for an increasing standard of living leaves no other choice than continuously augmenting industrial production and making available steadily greater quantities of raw materials at still better qualities. Therefore, any raw material has to be utilized to the greatest possible extent and processed at optimum economy on large mechanical equipment. The layout of processing facilities of large throughput rates can be based on multiple or single lines. The latter enables the application of large machines of optimum size. Proven equipment for homogenizing, classifying, separating superfine material, sorting and dewatering are-now available in optimum sizes. By the use of these large machines operating cost of pit coal preparation plant can be significantly lowered by reducing the specific requirements regarding space, capital investment, energy, operation and maintenance.

The advent of the process control computer with its capabilities of monitoring, storage, and real-time control has revolutionized control technology in the mineral industry. Initial efforts to introduce the computer into process control began in the early 1960's. However, it wasn't until the last decade with the introduction of integrated circuits and minicomputers that truly successful applications became visible. Computer hardware and real-time operating software have improved to the point that they rarely provide major problems in the implementation of successful control systems. At this time the most prevalent problems and obstacles affecting the successful implementation of a control system are as follows: (1) reliable and representative sampling systems; (2) rugged and reliable process sensors; (3) the availability of well-defined control strategies; (4) the willingness of plant management to provide the continuous support necessary to acquire and/or train appropriate personnel in the operation and maintenance of advanced control systems. Discussion of these problems and of the instrumentation required for the successful application of computers in minerals processing plants follows. In order to enhance this discussion the remainder of this subsection is broken up into individual mineral processing categories.

"Understanding the influence of slurry particle size on wear is essential to maximising the life of centrifugal pumps operating in mineral processing plants and for hydrotransport duties. Particle size influences not only the wear rate but also the wear pattern in pumps. Complicating the situation is the different relative wear rate for different pump parts depending on particle size. A simple Slurry Wear Type (SWT) number based on particle size and size distribution is proposed as a means for categorising slurry pump wear patterns and optimising pump application and material selection. INTRODUCTION The wear of centrifugal slurry pumps in mineral processing and hydrotransport can be quite severe and is one of the major cost concerns of plant operators. Some typical worn slurry pump parts made from high chrome white iron are shown in Figure 1. Erosion wear rates of up to 2 mm/day are not uncommon [1].Centrifugal slurry pumps are required to handle solid-liquid mixtures with a very wide range of particles extending from sub-micron size clay through to 200mm and larger cobbles. Particle size distribution can also vary widely from uniform and narrow (such as graded sand) through to very broad (such as grinding circuit slurries). Slurry particles may also undergo size change due to attrition during the pumping process. The major wearing parts in a slurry pump are the impeller, side liners and casing liner. These are shown with reference to a Warman® MC centrifugal pump in Figure 2. While many particle properties (including size, shape, hardness, density and concentration) influence pump wear, this work will consider only the effect of particle size as it is the major determinant of wear characteristics. Particle size influences the wear pattern, material performance and relative component wear rate in centrifugal slurry pumps. As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

New or improved technology will continue to drive productivity improvements through the next decade. In January 1988, I presented a paper titled, "Large Underground Mines of the 1990s? before the SME. I will follow some of the themes developed in that paper as modified by our experience in the past two years. In order for a coal company to be profitable today, it has had to reduce unit costs experienced in the past. This is because the current average realization, even accounting for a recent strengthening, remains below that of a few years ago. Doing business as was done in the past is not good enough. The coal industry needs to increase productivity in the range of 5-10% annually merely to stay even with rising costs. Underground productivity has been increasing more rapidly than that for surface mining. With the exception of the Powder River basin of Montana and Wyoming, underground productivity has caught up with that for surface mining in many regions of America. There are a number of technological factors which have attributed to increases in underground productivity and which should be factors in the future.

This treatise presents the application of the vertical furnace in a carbon regeneration system. Comparison is made to a rotary kiln. The construction, operation and control of the vertical furnace and system components are discussed. Advantages include high efficiency, fuel economy, minimal mechanical apparatus and maintenance, atmospheric and temperature control, ease of operation and reliability.

Agglomeration techniques have been successfully applied to commerical heap leach cyanidation operations for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores, mine wastes, and tailings. The major parameters important for successful agglomeration pretreatment of these feed materials are discussed. Several commercial agglomeration-heap leaching operations are described. Two of the operations converted from conventional heap leaching to agglomeration-heap leaching after coventional heap leaching proved unsuccessful. Heap performance before and after agglomeration is discussed. A fairly recent operation that began production using agglomeration-heap leaching technology is also described. Two operations that processed milled tailings by agglomeration are discussed. The tailings feeds could not have been economically processed by means other than agglomeration-heap leaching.

Early history of the district is typical of many, particularly in Southwestern United States. The usual early Spanish influence was felt; Marcos de Niza, Coronado and Father Kino are most notable, but authentic records regarding Spanish mining activities are sparse. About 1769 the Indian village of Tucson became a Spanish settlement. During the next century prospecting attempts were largely interrupted by the Indian, Mexican and Civil Wars. By 1870 Tucson had a population of 3200 and by 1880 the Southern Pacific Railroad extended all the way from Los Angeles. Pyrometasomatic copper ore was first produced with some local direct ore smelting done during the late 1800s. By 1907, a rail line was built from the Twin Buttes mines to Tucson by the Twin Buttes Mining and Smelting Company. World War I was a very active period, with mixed copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver production. This came mainly from underground replacement and contact metamorphic deposits and from practically all portions of the district. Some of these operations continued intermittently until the 1929 depression.

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores, such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Flotation of metal sulfide ores has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. It is the relative technical/economic ease of floating metal sulfide minerals that has been a major driving force behind the rapid expansion in the supply/demand of metals over this 50 year period. It is estimated that 1.6 billion tons of feed sulfide ores are processed each year in the free world based on the froth flotation process, Klimpel (1987) and the manufacture/use of associated chemical reagents is a major portion of the 1.5 billion dollars (U.S.) free world mining chemicals business, Klimpel (1988b). The use of froth flotation appears to be increasing partially due to the ever decreasing feed grades and liberation sizes of the feed minerals. Froth flotation has shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a variety of equipment configurations. Such operations exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the widely used mechanical flotation cell is scalable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required -- pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants -- are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. While there has been a tendency for the quality of metal sulfide ores in any one geographic location to deteriorate over time due to mining intensity, the overall global supply of sulfide minerals is still very ample. Thus, the physical supply side of sulfide ore concentrates has not been under strong technology improvement pressure with increasing metal demands. Part of this is due to the ability of capital to consistently move to new geographic sources having suitable-grade sulfide ores. In these moves, the actual froth flotation technology used (including collector chemicals) has had to change little. As an illustration of this trend, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of thio collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 987 were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. This is clearly not typical of reagent development in other process-related industries. In addition, the industrial-scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully on an industrial scale for many years. Thus the industrial process of froth flotation, especially as applied to the recovery of sulfide minerals, poses a dilemma: such a process is widely used, economic, versatile, forgiving, etc. and yet is still not very well understood in a mechanistic sense leading to prediction of results from fundamentals even after 50 years of usage. Electrostatic and/or high tension separation has been used for the separation of rare metal bearing minerals, foods, industrial wastes and so on. Since the separation is achieved by the difference mainly in surface conductivity of particles, the efficiency in humid circumstances is very low, and then, the applicability is considerably limited. We applied the following two-stage pretreatment technique to the separation process, which involves (1) adjustment of surface wettability by adsorbing surfactant on the particle surface and (2) control of the surface conductivity by spraying with electrolyte aqueous solution. The addition of this pretreatment technique has been found to have a great advantage over conventional methods. Separation efficiency is achieved even in humid circumstances and selectivity can also be obtained between insulator minerals. The selectivity is very similar to that of flotation in wet process. This separation technique will be applied not only to mineral processing but the processing of industrial waste such as electric and electronic waste materials.

The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to enable mine operators to maximize longwall dust reductions, while optimizing the use of ventilating air and shearer water consumption. A recent investigation by Foster-Miller Incorporated, under a Bureau of Mines contract, quantified the effect of increased face airflow and shearer water supply on face dust concentrations. A 70 pct reduction in respirable dust levels was achieved at the shearer operator's position during tail-to-head cutting by an incremental increase in average face air velocity from 83.8 m/min (275 fpm) to 123.4 m/min (405 fpm), while holding shearer water consumption constant. A 60 pct reduction was achieved through an increase in shearer water pressure and flow from 9.1 kg/cm2 (130 psi) at 0.19 m3/min (50 gpm) to 19.7 kg/cm2 (280 psi) at 0.28 m3/min (75 gpm), holding airflow constant. The combined effects of increasing both parameters produced an 85 pct reduction. Optimal usage of ventilating air and shearer water consumption can be achieved by defining a "point of diminishing returns" above which further increases no longer reduce dust concentrations, proportionately .

Campbell Red Lake Mine is situated at Balmertown, in the Red Lake District of Northwestern Ontario, Canada. This area is some 120 miles north of the Trans Canada Highway and is some 160 miles Northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The majority of our 300 employees live in Balmertown, which is a community of some 1,200 people, situated adjacent to the mine proper. The mine is serviced by a single shaft 4,300 feet deep. There are 27 levels at 150 ft. intervals. Stoping is being carried out down to the 20th level with only preliminary development having been done on the bottom 6 levels. The majority of our mill feed of 825 tons per calendar day comes from above the 10th level. Gold occurs as specks and streaks in bluish-grey to white quartz carbonate veins. It is extremely fine grained and most is invisible to the unaided eye. In addition to Gold the veins carry varying amounts of sulphides such as, Arsenopyrite, Stibnite, Pyrite, Pyrrhotite and Sphalerite. A minor amount of silver occurs as an impurity in the gold. Arsenopyrite is a marker for the gold ore at Campbell. The average grade of the mill feed is 0.7 oz. of gold per ton. The ore is dumped into an underground ore pass that feeds to a jaw crusher on the 20th level that reduces the rock to a maximum size of 4". This material is hoisted by skips to an ore bin in the head frame.

The introduction of liberalisation in Dutch mineral provision has created a lot of uncertainty on how and where to supply for the need of construction raw materials. Some possible effects of this policy shift are: 1. the extraction of materials from small pits with truck transport, 2. an increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, 3. the usage of marine dredged materials, 4. more input of secondary substitutes. The outcome of this policy and the resulting marketbehaviour have consequences for transport and infrastructure and hence for sustainability issues. Mineral provision, on the other hand, is also influenced by the availability of infrastructure. Insufficient transport capacity could hamper the development of mineral projects that render benefits to society. (Even) in a liberalising market for mineral provision, the central and local governments have an important role to play with regard to infrastructure and the effects of transport. Various trends point towards an increasing internationalisation in mineral provision. What will increasing trade and increasing influence of the market mean for transport infrastructure? How should increasing transport be judged with respect to sustainability? In the sustainability discussion these questions will have to be answered on a national as well as on a European scale.
