There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Rockfall and unstable rock slopes can be effectively controlled by utilizing steel wire rope net systems, either as barriers or as slope draping. The chief advantage of such systems over rigid type barriers is the flexibility of wire rope netting, permitting kinetic energy dissipation, yet providing high strength and consequently low maintenance. A review of the design considerations involved with these systems, as well as a review of several mine and non-mine installations is presented with the hope that the information may contribute to the safety against the dangers of rockfall and other mine hazards in active and abandoned mines.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision-making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system will require significant capital and operating expenses; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision-making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision-making are provided for an actual mine decision.

To plan a safe and efficient coal mining operation, the design engineer should use all the available information regarding the property to be exploited. The reliability of the mining operation must be as high as possible so that the plants relying on the coal can operate at the maximum design capacity. A good design should incorporate all of the known geological characteristics of the deposit, the structural and physical properties of the coal, as well as the rock which will form the roof and floor of the mine openings. A systematic method is proposed as a guide to insure a mine design that will be safe, efficient and will minimize surface disturbances resulting from mining operations. It is anticipated that the method proposed will result in maximum extraction at perhaps minimum cost to the operator. In general, to develop a mining area, several factors are systematically reviewed: (1) determination of the economic minability of the deposit, (2) the computation of the coal reserves, (3) the marketability of the coal, and (4) the life of the property. In general, boreholes are drilled in a predetermined pattern and geophysical or geological methods are used to log the boreholes. The information so obtained is primarily used to determine the quality and the extent of the deposit and to determine to some extent such geological features as faults, barren areas, washouts, and channels.

Stripping of gold and silver from carbon is effected by means of two main processes (AARL and ZADRA ). The main rate-enhancing parameter in the stripping of gold and silver is temperature. A secondary rate-enhancing parameter is ionic strength. (1) Stripping is usually conducted within a solution containing sodium cyanide (0.1 -0.5% ) and caustic ( 1 -3%). The development of a chemistry that increases the rate of gold and silver stripping from carbon in a manner proportional to its concentration is described. Its use in atmospheric and pressure strips is also outlined.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. "Location. The iron formation of the Gogebic district (including the Penokee) comprises a narrow belt south of the western part of Lake Superior extending from Michigan for a considerable distance into Wisconsin. From the mouth of the Montreal River (about twenty-five miles west of Ashland) the iron formation is only about twelve miles distant, but it is about twenty miles south of Ashland. Beginning on the east at a point about eight miles east of Wakefield, Mich., it extends through Sunday Lake, Bessemer and Ironwood in Michigan, and thence south of west through Hurley, Wis., and only a short distance south of Mellen, Wis. About eight miles westward from Mellen, the formation disappears, but six miles further west it is known to reappear and continue thence for about eight miles. The total length of the range is about sixty miles, two-thirds of this distance being in the State of Wisconsin; but nearly all of the ore has been obtained from the eastern third of the district, which is in the State of Michigan.History. This iron range was first noted in 1848 by Dr. Randall, assistant geologist to Dr. David Dale Owen, while following the fourth principal meridian northward. It was also reported by Charles Whittlesey in an account of a survey made in 1849, and published by Owen in 1852. Analyses of the iron ore are given with the following account. ""The bed of magnetic iron ore south of Lac des Anglais is of extraordinary thickness,25 to 60 feet. * * In the wild and deep ravines where the Bad River breaks through the range, there is a cliff of slaty ore * * * probably three hundred feet thick. * * * I estimate more than one-half of this face to be ore, and in places the beds are from ten to twelve feet in thickness, with very little inter-mixture of quartz * * * . The position of the best exposures of ore which I saw is such as to require from eighteen to twenty eight miles of transportation to reach the lake."""

Fractures of sedimentary rocks in the vicinity of the outcrop are commonly encountered around the world. Mine highwalls and numerous highway cuts give excellent views for detailed study of surface fractures. This paper gives an explanation of the origin of fractures as well as characterization of the distribution and extent of joint system with reference to lithologic composition of the rocks. Practical implications of the joint system affecting mine operations are described. Among the subjects discussed are: discontinuous deformation as an effect of surface subsidence, stability of mine portals and near outcrop underground operations, and stability of highwalls, when using highwall miners and strip operations. Some design procedures are recommended that can minimize the problems encountered in mining areas with intense joint systems.

The increasing application of roadheading machines in the coal industry has prompted the development of an appropriate selection methodology for such machine applications in specific locales. Accurate geological sections and comprehensive rock testing are required for all machine tunneling. Using suitable geotechnical parameters and index tests, sensitive both to excavability and standability of the strata, a classification scheme has evolved to help evaluate the rock mass vis-a-vis application of a given weight-class of roadheading machine. The classification parameters include point load index, brittleness, abrasiveness, average crack density, and ground water, which with assigned numerical ratings, lead to a quantitative global rating of the rock mass. For each rock mass class, the selection of an appropriate roadheading machine is recommended. The paper illustrates the application of the rock mass rating system and also describes simple index tests for evaluating the classification parameters for brittleness and abrasiveness. The Cowles Mountain Tunnel was driven 2,073 m (6,800 ft) with a 3.43 m (11 ft 3 in) shuffle shoe TBM, for the San Diego County Water Authority, through extremely high strength granitic rock in the City of San Diego, Ca. The initial contract was $10.9 million. Tunneling began in March 1992 and all work was completed in May 1993. After the tunnel drive was completed in September 1992, a 2.44 m (96 in) Welded Steel Pipe was installed, welded and encased with cellular backfill to complete a small portion of the County's $970 million Capital Improvement Project. This paper will discuss the successful completion of a tunnel through some of the hardest most abrasive rock ever excavated with a TBM in North America.

A thermal plasma assisted laminar flow reactor has been used to evaluate the kinetics of converting alumina to sodium aluminate in flight. Free energy minimization calculations were used to determine experimental conditions. The experimental variables include: alumina particle size, alumina/sodium nitrate molar ratio, temperature and residence time. A mathematical model for the conversion was developed and validated. Experimental and mathematical results are presented.

Exploration for sandstone-type uranium ore bodies which will be exploited using underground mining techniques is usually executed in sequential fashion. Geostatistical methods can be used at the earliest exploration stages to design drilling programs which have a high probability of success in the location and delineation of mineable ore-grade mineralization, should such mineralization exist. In succeeding development stages, geostatistics may be used to outline and define the potential grade of reserves and to apply confidence limits on the grade estimation. Delineation of mineable reserves for mine planning requires extensive development drilling; using such drilling data geostatistical methods may be used to minimize the drilling needed to achieve a desired level of confidence in the calculation of mineable uranium ore grade and tonnage. Because sandstone-type uranium deposits tend to be pod-shaped and are generally aligned along a mineralized trend, this paper proposes a geostatistical method of calculating uranium ore reserves which accounts for this fact and predicts the area within a trend which is underlain by ore. This method uses an indicator value; that is, drill holes which contain mineable ore-grade intercepts are coded as 1, those that do not are coded 0. The indicator may be kriged over the mineralized trend to obtain an estimate of the area underlain by ore. The thickness and grade-thickness may be kriged, and the average ore grade may then be obtained by dividing grade-thickness by thickness, as is conventional for stratabound deposits. The mean grade is then multiplied by the kriged mean thickness to obtain an estimate of the volume, and thence tonnage, of mineable ore within the trend.

"INTRODUCTIONProject-related studies showed that lab tests are a helpful tool for the planning of EPB tunneling and soil conditioning in cohesionless soils. This type of ground commonly represents the extended application range for EPB shields, which demands for a treatment with additives. Considering soil conditioning with foam, so far, approaches exist for the investigation of the foam quality and of the conditioning behavior of soils (e.g. (EFNARC GUIDELINES 2001 2003)), but not any standards for testing procedures related to soil conditioning. State-of-the-art research on the topic is and was conducted for example in Bochum (Germany) cf. (Budach 2012; Maidl 1995), in Lyon (France) cf. (Quebaud et al. 1998), in Oxford and Cambridge (Great Britain) cf. (Borghi 2006; Peña Duarte 2007), in Delft (Netherlands) cf. (Bezuijen and Schaminée 2001), in Turin (Italy) cf. (Borio 2010; Peila et al. 2013; Vinai 2006), and in Aachen (Germany) cf. (Vennekötter 2012). Additionally, applied science is reported by the tunneling practice and suppliers of conditioning agents. Although the research focus in all these and further studies varied, similar test methods and test series were applied. A standardization of essential properties and testing methods (setup and procedures) however did not take place. The results from laboratory testing can only function as index values for practice because in the studies, production and application of the conditioning agents mainly takes place under atmospheric conditions. Nevertheless, the tests enable basic understanding of feasibility as well as processes and interactions going on during soil conditioning. For recommendations for standardized and reproducible testing see (Budach 2012; Budach and Thewes 2015).The most extensive investigations on the flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures have been performed by using the slump test from concrete engineering, cf. (DIN EN 12350-2 2009-08), which originally is applied on evaluating the workability of fresh concrete. Although this test does not describe the actual flow behavior, it rather represents an index on the workability, very much experience exists with this test method. Besides others, the workability – or flow behavior – of the EPB support medium certainly is a major factor of influence on the properties of the material in the excavation chamber and thus, for effective tunneling with EPB shields, cf. (Galli and Thewes 2014). For a summary of various investigations on the workability of conditioned soils using the slump test and resulting recommended slump ranges see (Budach 2012; Vinai 2006). Thereof, slumps between 10 and 20 cm have been reported as suitable workability for EPB applications. However, there is actually not much known about the real flow behavior of soil-foam mixtures related to rheological properties such as the viscosity (?) or potential yield stresses (t0). These physical values are necessary for a realistic determination of face pressure, for the design of required torques, and for an evaluation of the material flow at different locations in the excavation chamber, in the screw conveyor or on the conveyor belt. To generate a linear pressure distribution at the tunnel face, as it is assumed a priori, a low-viscosity fluid is favorable, whereas in the screw conveyor, a high-viscous fluid is needed for a controlled pressure decrease. On the conveyor belt, yield stress plays an important role preventing deliquescence and spilling from the belt. Attempts in characterizing the actual flowing of soil-foam mixtures have so far only been made by few researchers, the application of rheometry is rare."

Modern ash handling systems exist in considerable numbers and a great deal of design and operating experience has been accumulated, It is the endeavor of this paper to point to a number of frequently recurring problems, A general appreciation of these problems will be helpful in both design and operation of systems. The light fly ash and the heavy bottom ash present different problems, and each will therefore be treated separately. Fly ash is collected in the ducting from the furnace to the stack and beneath the mechanical and electrostatic dust collectors. The greatest amount of dust is collected beneath the mechanicals and electrostatics. Hoppers are generally provided as integral parts of the collector. Suitable valves and piping are connected to these hoppers for removal of the dust. The size and shape of these hoppers are important factors in determining frequency of handling and the capacity of the system.

The Washington State Highway Department consists of seven geographic dis¬tricts. District offices are located in Seattle, Wenatchee, Olympia, Vancouver, Yakima, Spokane and Bellevue. District is covered from the Spokane office, and is responsible for the six counties in the northeast corner of the state (Fig.l). It is bordered on the north by the International Boundary, on the south by the Snake River, on the east by the Washington - Idaho border, and on the west by a north-south line thru Lake Roosevelt. The landslides to be discussed in this paper are at Colfax, Washington, which is located in the southeast corner of the district. The town of Colfax is situated in a narrow valley eroded into the Tertiary volcanic basalts by the Delouse River. The valley walls are steep and generally colluvium mantled. State Highway 1°c, from Spokane to Colfax, descends into the valley from just north of Colfax on a bench cut into the valley wall. The highway department designed a widening project to increase the misting two lane roadway to three lanes, thus providing a passing lane for uphill traffic. The third lane was constructed as a cut section for the entire length. Construction excavation was begun at the top of the hill in silts of eolian origin. Proceeding downhill, excavation encountered three individual basalt flows with two zones of palagonite tuff separating them. The upper palagonite zone was dry, and excavation proceeded across this zone with no mishaps. The lower palagonite zone carried considerable groundwater. As excavation crossed the lower zone landsliding became contemporaneous with excavation, due to removal of toe of slope and saturated conditions. Remedial measures for landsliding consisted of designing shot rock buttresses across the palagonite zone and also the installation of horizontal drains to reduce hydrostatic pressure.

Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwall method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gateroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event model of roadway development can help assess how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of variability and uncertainty in operations. One of the major delays associated with roadway development is caused by the shuttle car due to its cyclic stop-start nature. Shuttle car travelling paths and machine interactions are normally constraint by the mine?s roadway layout and mine safety issues. This paper presents simulations of shuttle car route options which can be considered at the design stage to minimize the cycle time of a shuttle car as part of a general roadway development simulation model developed using 3D Flexsim.

LKAB owns and operates two of the largest underground mines in the world in Northern Sweden. In Malmberget, with a production capacity of about 30,000 t/day of iron ore, the current main 815 m haulage level is rapidly approaching the end of Its life and plans are being made for its replacement on the 1000 m level. Due to the separation of the orebodies, trucks have been chosen for transporting the ore from the orepasses to the crushers. The trucks currently in use have a capacity of 120 tons. To increase the efficiency of the loaded haul, the new main level will have a favorable slope from the drawpoint locations to the crushers. From the new level the crushed ore will be transported by conveyor to the 815 m level for hoisting to the surface. The paper discusses the planned mining and transportation system.

Glencore’s Nickel Rim South Mine, located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, is a primary/secondary blasthole operation with ore zones lying between 1,100 and 1,700 m below surface. One of the main benefits of the primary/secondary mining method in high stress ground is that up to 50% of the mining will take place in secondary stopes that should be in a yielded rock mass state. Every future secondary mining stope begins as a primary stope abutment pillar. As with many mines, the stress loading history and rock mass conditions can vary considerably in space and time. Safe mining practices cannot allow for an assumption that the planned secondary stopes are indeed yielded. An incorrect assumption can result in mining development and stoping taking place in high stress ground rather than the expected yielded rock mass conditions. This can result in higher levels of seismicity than expected and incorrect ground support recommendations in areas where workers could be exposed. Seismic monitoring is the mines’ premier tool to track the actual rock mass response to mining. Yielded zones have a reasonably clear seismic signature/pattern over time that is visible in the collected data. The ability to accurately locate small magnitude seismic events can help define and delineate different stages of rock mass failure. The vast majority of the seismic data recorded by the microseismic monitoring system is below moment magnitude (Mw) 0.0. Examples are provided showing how small seismic events (Mw < -1.5) can help provide feedback from the rock mass deformation that allows the ground control engineer to gain a better understanding of how the rock mass is responding to mining processes.

To succeed in today&apos;s competitive coal market, coal companies must continuously improve production and lower cost. However, the coal industry&apos;s historical management practices must change to remain viable? The practices of the current day efficient coal mine manager are reviewed and examined using W. Edwards Deming&apos;s definition of management. The statistical tools, including Pareto Charts, Control Charts and Scatter Diagrams, which identify the problems management must approach differently to increase productivity at a coal mine, are discussed.

Gravity based coal/mineral preparation plants must be operated to yield products of a quality satisfactory to existing markets; but, because of historic control problems, recovery is frequently sacrificed to achieve quality resulting in losses of valuable product. Plant control has ranged from intuitive in-plant spot quality judgments made by various operators to gross methods involving such devices as density gauges, floats, grab-sample on-the-spot sink-float tests, etc. Millions of tons of quality coal/minerals are lost to refuse each year, because of the historic lack of a continuous and dependable control system. The result is both serious economic as well as environmental losses. While the economic losses are obvious, less obvious environmental losses, in the case of coal, result from the misplacement of more ignitable quality fuel to refuse banks. A control system capable of supplying a market-grade coal/mineral product, while continuously minimizing product losses to refuse, has until recently escaped technology.
