The impact of smoothing on the definition of ore and waste boundaries using linear estimation and conditional simulation methods is discussed. The nature of transfer functions is examined including their ability to incorporate categorical data (e.g. a dominant lithology code). An Ore Block Optimization (OBO) transfer function is presented that provides a clear guide for the mining geologist. Advantages are seen in defining stockpile cut-off grades and meeting production targets such as maximizing head grade, maximizing ore tonnes or minimizing ore loss or dilution. Each of these scenarios impacts on mine profitability and grade control.

Cleveland's Southwest Interceptor Contracts No. 3 and No. 4 are continuations of Contract No. 1 addressed at the 1987 RETC with geology, equipment, and methods that differ greatly. The two contracts consist of 791 m (4.22 miles) of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) tunnel lined to 2.9 m (9.5 ft), nine access shafts, six drop shafts, and six collection structures. The excavation drive was completed by the use of a 1970 vintage Robbins TBM hybrid for this particular job through the use of both new and old technology. All other excavations were successfully accomplished through drill and blast method in tight residential areas. Concrete lining and connections were completed nine months after holing through.

A technique is described for the solvent extraction of zirconium. In this method, zirconium has been extracted quantitatively from 0.005 M sodium salicylate solution at pH 2.5 - 3 using 0.01 M triphenylphosphine oxide dissolved in toluene as an extractant. Zirconium has also been recovered quantitatively from 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate solution, but extractions in nitric and hydrochloric acids (as media) were negligible. The resulting extracted metal ion has been stripped with sulfuric acid (0.5 M) and determined with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. This method has been applied successfully to achieve 95% recovery of zirconium from zircon concentrate.

The industrial mineral filler plant of the Gouverneur Tale Company is equipped with a good dust collection system installed long before the recent popularization of environmental pollution. Credit for this fact is due to the foresight of Mr. R. S. McClellan, Project Manager and subsequent Vice President and General Manager of Gouverneur Talc, who recently retired as Vice President Engineering of the parent organization, the R. T. Vanderbilt Company. Also instrumental in the early stages of plant operation and the solution of start-up problems was J. A. Gustin who is now an engineering consultant located in Martinsville, Va. Credit is most certainly due to the late R. T. Vanderbilt, the company's founder, who favored and approved the investment in the necessary facilities that were far ahead of all competitors in the industry at that time.

7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). United states reserves of oil and gas have been steadily declining while consumption of petroleum products has continued to increase. The nut result has been an ever increasing shortfall between supply and demand. This imbalance has been made up by imports of both oil and gas causing a strain on the United States Balance of Payments. To complicate the situation further, exporting nations have recently formed a cartel and dramatically increased the selling price of petroleum products. To meet U.S. energy demand, increased attention has been drawn to the production of synthetic oil and gas from coal. To date, considerable research has been conducted and is continuing on various processes for liquefaction and gasification of coal. Some of these processes are now in the pilot plant stage and at least one demonstration plant has been proposed. The coal conversion complexes envisioned will be very large, requiring substantial capital investments and abundant reserves of coal. Coal production to feed these proposed complexes has been estimated on the order of 75,000 tons per day. With the viability of these projects becoming economically attractive, the Office of Coal Research initiated a contract with Fluor Utah to determine and define the problems of surface mining coal at very high mining rates, under varied physical, geographic, and climatic conditions. The flow of recent events in the Middle East has created a greater sense of urgency for this study.

Energy dissipation and fragmentation of rock is of interest for mine-to-mill operations in order to understand breakage and to minimize energy consumption during blasting at the mine site, and comminution at the processing plant. In this regard, high velocity impact breakage of long granite cores, called bars, has been studied with instrumented strain gages to follow the energy dissipation gradient along the bar length resulting from the strain waves generated by impact. As a result of high velocity impact, three zones have been identified (fragmentation, fracture, and elastic) and these three zones have been characterized in 3D using X-ray tomography. The fragmentation zones of the granite bars were studied in detail to describe the particle size distribution and the particle shape characteristics. Finally, the experimental energy dissipation for the fragmentation zone was found to be in close agreement with the expected energy calculated from the Bond work equation, if the anisotropic granite particles are defined by length rather than by sieve size.

The dissolution kinetics of gold in iodide solutions with oxygen in an autoclave was investigated. The leaching process was described by a gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous reaction. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, and concentration of lixiviants on the overall leaching rate was investigated. It was found that the dissolution of gold was limited by a heterogeneous chemical reaction. The apparent activation energy was measured to be 34.7-54.3 kJ/mol under the conditions studied. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the kinetic model proposed.

The American Mining Congress and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have formed a collaborative research team to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive control strategy to reduce diesel particulate matter concentrations without degrading other air quality parameters at an underground noncoal mine. Other participating organizations include Caterpillar, Inc., the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the University of Minnesota. After extensive baseline information and air quality data are collected, available control strategies to reduce diesel particulate matter exposures will be implemented, individually or in combination, and evaluated. This paper discusses the objectives and protocol of the collaborative effort to evaluate diesel particulate control technology.

Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that influence miring. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined, conditions are met in most coal mines in southeastern Utah including those of the United States Steel Corporation. This coal bed measures up to 16 feet in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 2, 000 feet. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colorado. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest..It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development.

Improvements in today's maintenance practices are mandatory as more complex and productive machines evolve in the mining industry. By keeping machine reliability high, through improved maintenance procedures, overall mining costs can be reduced. The Bureau of Mines is investigating diagnostic maintenance systems for underground mining machinery. A hydraulic expert diagnostic system and an electric motor predictive diagnostic system have been designed and installed on a Joy 16CM continuous miner. An electrical diagnostic system has been designed and installed on a Joy 14CM continuous miner. Each system is functionally described and the relative merits of expert diagnostic systems versus algorithmic diagnostic systems are discussed.

The Mid-Continent Geophysical Anomaly (M.G.A.) which extends from Michigan into Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas, has recently been the object of intense preliminary oil and gas exploration activity involving widespread land leasing, seismic data collection, permitting of deep exploratory holes and other activities (Paul et al., 1985). This report describes the remote-sensing techniques and results of the application of these techniques to study the geology of the M.G.A. and the surroundings in Iowa. In early 1981, Coal Valley Natural Resources contracted Geospectra Corporation to find a large, (100,000 acres or larger) lease block for wildcat oil and gas exploration. The southwest Iowa area was chosen for several reasons. First, southwest Iowa contains the northeast portion of the Forest City basin (Figure 1) which has produced oil and gas from numerous fields in Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska (Landes, 1970; Petzet, 1982).

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for the highly mechanized PT. Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The deep ore zone (DOZ) is a coppergold deposit that is being developed underneath the current intermediate ore zone (IOZ) mine. One of the company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady ore flow of 25 kt/d (27,500 stpd) by 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

Column flotation is emerging as one of the most important new separation technologies of the decade. Attendant to this development is the need for a quantitative understanding of the dynamic characteristics of columns. An understanding of the many important sub-processes occurring in the cell makes possible the development of dynamic simulators for flotation columns which will aid in the design of control systems for dynamic and steady state optimization. This paper presents a dynamic model for the column flotation cell developed from a population balance point of view similar to that which has been successfully applied to conventional flotation cells. In particular, the mixing that occurs within the pulp is modeled with a distributed-volume, mixer-in-series model as an approximation to the axially dispersed plug flow transport that occurs in the cell. This simpler approach avoids the distributed transport model which often leads to mathematical intractability. Other phenomena dealt with are the attachment and detachment of particles from bubbles in the froth and pulp, the transport of water and the bubble volumes with the froth and pulp phases. Simulation of the flotation of an Illinois No. 6 coal in a pilot plant flotation column were performed to test control strategies.

The Van Stone zinc-lead mine is located in northeastern Washing- ton in Stevens County. It is about 24 km (15 miles) south of the Canadian border and 48 km (30 miles) west of the Idaho line. The deposits occur in late Cambrian age limestones and dolomites of the Metaline Formation. The bedding controls the trend of the zones containing the lenses of zinc-lead mineralization. The Van Stone property and vicinity is almost entirely covered with glacial drift averaging perhaps 6 m (20 ft) in thickness. Outcrops are very sparse. Outcropping gossan with zinc mineralization was first discovered by George Van Stone in 19 13, in what is now known as the South Ore Zone. Only minor trenching was done at that time. The property was idle until the mid- 1920s when Hecla Mining Co. drove several short adits and performed minor diamond drilling. In 1938, Willow Creek Mines of Nevada Inc. acquired the Van Stone plus adjacent parcels and commenced drilling on the known South Ore Zone. In the course of an expanded drilling program, the nonoutcropping North Ore Zone was discovered and was drilled out along a N30°E strike for about 305 m (1000 ft), beyond which point no mineralization was intersected.

Coal degradation is the breakage of coal particles to finer sizes due to the continuous forces of attrition and gravity to which coal is subjected during mining, handling and preparation. The objective of this paper is to determine the extent of degradation that a coal slurry experiences when transported through pumps and pipelines. The examination of degradation results for a number of different coal slurries have indicated that the extent of breakage is dependent upon the physical properties of coal and the time span of circulation. These results have also indicated that certain size fractions of coal are more susceptible to breakage than others.

A ferrous chloride-oxygen leaching system was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a means of re-covering copper and silver from a sulfide concentrate that had been pretreated to remove a majority of the antimony. The pretreated concentrate contained Cu, Ag, Pb, Zn, Sb, and As. Parameters affecting metal extraction, such as temperature, pressure, amount of ferrous chloride, and initial hydrogen ion concentration, were studied. Copper extraction of 98 pct was achieved by leaching 4 hours at 40 pounds per?square inch gage (psig) and 1000 ?C. Copper was recovered from leach solutions by cementation with iron, and the resulting ferrous chloride was recycled. Leaching the residue with cyanide followed by electrowinning recovered 99.7 pct of the silver. Iron, Sb, As, Pb, and S reported to the tails.

In 1977, Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Mining was developed at the Homestake Mine and by 1983 had become a fully integrated mining method contributing 60% to total underground production. VCR has proven successful for continuous ore blocks exceeding 55,100 tons (50,000 st) with dips greater than 60" and provides a productivity average of 39 tons (35 st) per man shift (tpms) which is 92% greater than Open Cut-and-Fill. Discontinuous ore bodies, small pods, or flat structures not amenable to bulk systems are mined with Mechanized Cut-and-Fill (MCF) and have been able to achieve a 32 tpms (29 st) average productivity. Small, low grade, remnant ore bodies were not economically viable with large scale bulk techniques and couldn't support the development required for a MCF system. As a result, Homestake began researching modified bulk mining methods to increase production rates and maintain safety, while lowering costs. A modified version of VCR with significantly diminished development was prototyped in an effort to reduce initial capital investment and expedite the production phase. This modified method is called Small Block Vertical Crater Retreat (S. B. VCR). Geology The Homestake Gold Mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota at Lead. Having been active since 1876, it now extends from the surface to the 2,440 m (8000 ft) level underground.

Cement copper is ordinarily converted to marketable metal by processing in a conventional smelter and refinery. Because of rapidly increasing cement copper production and limited excess smelting capacity, other techniques were investigated for preparing marketable copper products. One route was to make copper powder for industrial use. The process scheme employed flotation for rejecting the bulk of the impurities, acid leaching to remove residual iron and aluminum, reduction sintering to eliminate oxygen, and grinding to obtain powder. Another route was to sinter the floated and leached copper into the form of anodes and electrolyze these to yield refined copper cathodes. At a current density of 30 amperes per square foot, power consumption for electrorefining was 185 kwhr per ton of copper. The feasibility of preparing commercial-size anodes by sintering is still to be assessed.
